I did most of the Tacoma assembly on my cab, ,I'm ready for the lights and easy out glass replacement.I stayed here to watch because you unlike many others have the vac setup right ,in which I have researched before assembly of my cab.You remind me of a fast talking used car salesman ,lol .....great video to the point !

      Hey Walter, thanks for the comments, glad you enjoyed the video. The LED lights are a great upgrade, we have been very happy with them. A lot of guys in the comments recommended Nutserts for the top glass instead of the thumb nuts we used. I think both work great depending on how you want to do it.
      We also like the vacuum in the rear since we feel it pulls debris from your field of view and out the back of the cabinet.
      Have fun with the upgrades to your cabinet. Don't forget to use our discount code for the LED lights if you decide to get them. Cheers!

    Nutserts for the glass, no need to mod the plastic frame and you can use your screw gun to zap it apart/together when doing the glass swaps.

      Hey Tom, thanks for the great idea. It looks like the cost of the Nutsert kits have come down in price, whereas they are only about $40-50 now. I think it's a handy tool to add to the garage collection.

    I have the older model blast cabinet... For the Vacuum system, I went to the local goodwill and bought an old Bissel cyclone vacuum cleaner for $9 bucks (basically all the newer vacuume cleaners, the one you can take the dust cannister off).. little bit of hillbilly engineering removing the floor cleaner, and hanging it on the back of the blast cabinet, and wiring it to a rocker switch... works like a charm.

      Glad you enjoyed the video. We tried to find the most flexible feed hose we could but it is still a little stiff inside the cabinet. Search around for something flexible as it will make it easier to move your arm around in the cabinet. We chose to go under the grate so the hose would not be going through the front part of the box, i.e. in your way or blocking any part of the front of the unit.
      Let us know a "cleaner" way to add the air gun instead of using the "T", that was the easiest solution we could come up with at the time and it has worked great so far.
      As far as lessons learned over the last 6 months or so, I would say definitely use polyurethane caulking on all the seams. The new foam strips work good but inevitably media will find a way through even the smallest cracks. Another thing we have yet to try are the clear plastic vinyl sheets that adhere to the underside of the glass. These will avoid changing out the glass and are a little cheaper per piece than the glass. 12x36" glass is currently $17.68 which will create (3) pieces @ $5.89ea versus the Sheets @ $3.00ea. Since we have not tried them out yet, I'm not sure ho long they will last compared to the glass. The clarity is super important to us since we are filming a lot of these projects but another subscriber suggested them so we will give them a try.

    I wouldve like you to talk more about the metering valve because I'm not sure to understand how it works. what does it do, what is the tap doing, do you connect air hose to it ?

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for the question. The 1/4" valve is to regulate the amount of incoming airflow to the blast media suction tube. This will adjust the amount of blast media delivered to the gun.
      Here is a good graphic that shows how the metering valve works.
      ibb.co/4Vqg5kM
      Hopefully that clears up any questions you have regarding the metering valve setup, Cheers!

  • @docktorleaky5869

    I like the siphon set up through the bottom. I think I will be doing that with mine. The siphon always comes out of the sand. I put a water separating regulator on mine to keep the air as dry as possible. I also like the LED set up. Mine is a screw in bulb that inevitably breaks when I try to unscrew it because it gets sand in the threads. Also its not nearly bright enough. Thanks for the ideas.

    • @BradleysGarage

      We've been pretty happy with the metering valve setup although you really need to make sure your compressor has enough CFM to make it work efficiently. And yes the led is amazing! Cheers!

  • @charlesbradshaw8673
    @charlesbradshaw8673 2 роки тому +1

    What kind of aircompressor are you using, a single stage or dual stage? What pressure do you use when operating the cabinet? Have you tried different kinds of blasting agents in it? Great build. I think it came out really nice. I have a single stage compressor at the moment; that's why I ask. So I want to do this. Again, thanks for taking the time to video this and post it.

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Charles, thanks for the comments. We are currently using a single stage 27 gal compressor that only puts out around 5.3 SCFM @90psi. This is an issue when trying to do larger parts that are more time consuming. We have to constantly wait for the tank to refill before continuing.
      Harbor Freight recommends 9.5 SCFM @ 90psi for "ideal" operation. You obviously can get by with less, as we are, but like I said above, it can get rather time consuming when you are constantly running out of air.
      As far as pressure goes, we are usually around 40-60psi depending on media type and how corroded the piece is.
      We have used Aluminum Oxide and Glass Bead so far in our cabinet. Waiting to try the walnut shells for a future project. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

    I'm curious as to what is inside the bucket or is it just as simple as a tube in and a tube out?

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the question Olive. Making the custom dust devil is as simple as adding the two holes in your bucket. Just make sure the one entering the bucket has a curved cut (like the video) to help create that venturi effect inside.
      This a cheap mod if you already have a shop vac. Have fun with your blast cabinet.
      Cheers!

    • @olivedrabgarage6243
      @olivedrabgarage6243 3 місяці тому

      @BradleysGarage so to ask a dumb question..there's nothing inside, just 2 holes and the two tunes entering with empty space inside or does the pipe with the flexible 90 degree tube go down almost to the bottom etc? It would have been good if you opened it up so we could see. A lot of the stuff you guys get off the shelf in the US just isn't available in Australia. We either have to buy from overseas at exorbitant prices or try to make something going to 20 different hardware stores, specialist parts suppliers, trade suppliers etc just to make something.

    Would be great to actually see a video of the cabinet in use. Most interested in seeing how effective the bucket mod and seeing the light strips after extended use. The light will also become etched over time.
    By the way you are missing a “baffle” mod on the intake port. Without the baffle media will just flow out. You need an intake air port.

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  2 роки тому

      Stay tuned for our next video where we are restoring an old BMW differential.
      In the meantime, here's a quick shot of it in action on a previous video, just to give you an idea of the lighting and how clear your field of vision is with the vacuum running.
      ua-cam.com/video/qwlcCnwFT0o/v-deo.html
      Here's a picture of the bucket after 2+ hours of use - ibb.co/YkP70h9
      The light strips have a clear protective cover that can be replaced periodically. They get pitted just like the glass but are inexpensive and easy to swap out.
      We haven't had any issues with media coming out of the intake port on the side. Since there is so much vacuum pressure in the box, the suction is quite strong and won't let media escape.
      Cheers!

    How did you connect the 3/8 air line to the gun with the 1/4 nipple? Did a clamp alone hold?

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  5 місяців тому

      Yes, we are just using a hose clamp for the air inlet hose to the gun. We are never really exceeding 90 psi so there hasn't been any issues using this method.

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  Рік тому

      Thanks for the comments Stiffler. We choose to reverse those since it makes more sense for us.
      By using the rear port for vacuum, you can add the piping so it's clean and out of the way and not hanging on the left side of the unit.
      Also, we feel having the air drawn across the cabinet and to the rear provides better visibility while blasting. It literally pulls the debris out of the working area.
      We just wanted to show different options for the blast cabinet upgrades. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

    I went a step further and cut a plastic 1" X 2" artificial stick to size with a slot at the top so I can tilt my machine back so my glass panel platform is nearly level after placing the front of the table frame in the slot for added security while the blaster is leaning.. This way when I tilt my blaster back, I can lay my glass in place without it sliding while I secure my frame down with my thumb nuts. You can still tilt the ones back that have rollers under them by placing two 4" X 4" 's at each end of the frame in the rear (inside of the rollers) for the machine to tilt on and get it off it's wheels so it don't slip around. The slot in the stick is good for me but. you flipped your table so you would have to be careful not to bump it.

      @@BradleysGarage I just saw the horrific flooding on the news. I hope it stops for you soon my friend. I have some great projects as well. They got backed up because a little over 18 months ago I was goin g to work on my 1957 Harley Panhead and got hit and flipped head over heels on the bike around a telephone pole and had my right leg crushed nearly off. The blood clots that formed broke loose and went to my hearty and lungs as I crawled up my dad's driveway making it feel like I was drowning. My brother got me to the hospital where they said I had less than 6 minutes to live if I wasn't in surgery. I had to learn how to walk again (third time in my life) and am finally coming out the other side. I just found a 1940's drill press and sensitive tapping machine from a closed machine shop that had just been opened. I am going to start my channel with that and then I found a Yamaha three wheeler 200 trimoto in a scrapyard that I will be using as my next project, then a Porsche 914 GT6 factory race car clone I found in a barn in western Pa. I will send you the links when I post the videos. I am also planning on making a 1934 Harley flathead from scratch by casting the case and cylinders. I am going to be really busy. We are currently using 80 grit Aluminum Oxide for all of our steel parts which need a more aggressive blast media.
      www.mcmaster.com/3418K82/
      For all of our Aluminum parts we are using glass bead which is less abrasive used on more delicate parts.

      McMaster-Carr has several locations across the US so shipping should not be too much. Since we a local in SoCal, we are able to pick it up directly from them. If you are outside of the US, you can use the item specs and locate similar products in your country. Hope this helps with your projects, Cheers!

      Hey Joe, it seems as though Harbor Freight is not really offering coupons that much in 2022. They have been trying to promote their Inside Track Club membership program and not give out coupons.
      Occasionally, they will list coupons for select items but it really only happens around holidays.
      Current coupons - go.harborfreight.com/20-percent-off-coupons/
      It looks like the last time HF offered a coupon for this unit was back in June - go.harborfreight.com/coupons/2022/05/179660-68893/
      Here is a good reference site that tracks coupons and previous discounted prices for all items. Not all deals show up but it's a good reference for historical prices.
      www.hfqpdb.com/
      I would keep my eyes open since we are approaching Black Friday and they might offer a deal on the blast cabinet. As long as you are not in a hurry, you might be able to save a few bucks.
      Good luck out there, Cheers!

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  Рік тому

      Hey Abner, thanks for the question. Since we are using the gravity feed setup with the proportioning valve we don't have to use very much blast media in the cabinet itself.
      Therefore we can just discard the small amount used after several projects and not really worry about running anything through a filter.
      Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

    I did the siphon thing out the bottom and I am not pulling any media. What could be the issue? One thing, I came through the side of the cabinet just below the right side door with a 1/2" brass fitting with the siphon hose. That is really the only difference. My air valve might be bigger than yours. Any ideas why I am not pulling media?

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  Рік тому

      Hey Chris, the most common reason for the media not flowing correctly is condensation in the air line or the media is damp.
      I am not sure exactly what you mean you used a 1/2" brass fitting on the media feed line? Did you just add the clear media hose to a fitting so that you are not running the hose through the cabinet? If so, that should affect the media flowing to the gun.
      You can play with the settings on your metering valve to adjust the air being drawn in at the bottom. It usually doesn't take much for the flow to work. You can try to set your incoming regulator to around 40-60psi and then hold the trigger down while you adjust the metering valve.
      As long as there are no blockages or clumped media in the line it should flow fine. You can always switch back to the siphon tube just to test your gun and pressures. Just to rule out anything that may have gotten overlooked.
      Good luck on your project, Cheers!

      I think you might be referring to the dust cap for the air inlet. That cap is removed when in use. The incoming air comes in from the left side of the cabinet and exits out the rear through the vacuum system. Cheers!

      @@kriswirth5377 Thanks for the comments, appreciate the feedback. We have been using the Blast Cabinet for the past year without any issues. Setup my metering valve like yours but it doesn't pull any media up to the gun. No clogs in the hose or in the metering valve. Any suggestions?

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  2 роки тому

      Hey Anthony, sorry to hear you're having trouble with the metering valve.
      The first thing to check would be the incoming pressure, what is that currently set to? Regulator?
      Second, what type of media are you currently trying?
      Third, what are the specs on your air compressor? CFM @ 90psi? 40psi?
      If all those things are looking good, you can play around with the small ball valve on the metering valve itself. Small adjustments there can make changes depending on the media currently being used.
      Let us know, Cheers!

      @@BradleysGarage 90 PSI at the regulator, Glass Bead 80 Grit Abrasive Media, 11 CFM @ 90psi. I notice that when i squeeze the trigger on my gun that the air pushes through the media hose back into the media. Should it do that?

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage  2 роки тому

      Hey Anthony, I would try to lower the regulator to around 40-60 psi. I have never really needed to run anywhere near 90psi for either aluminum oxide or glass bead.
      Also, open the small ball valve next to the metering valve to about halfway. You can also put a finger on the nozzle tip to create back pressure once everything is hooked up. This can provide a little "jump start" to the flow.
      Let us know how that goes, Cheers!

      Hey Anthony, thanks for the question. We choose ABS over PVC simply for cosmetic reasons. We wanted to go with the clean black look so ABS was the easiest choice.
      You can save a few bucks with PVC but then you have to paint it if you want it black so adding the cost of the paint and the additional day for dry time, we felt the ABS was a better option.

    I am buying a used one of these for 125.00 in great shape, new they are $229 now in 2023. I am going to remove the lower tray invert it and use it for the bottom with casters attached to it. I will place a section of plywood in it to re-enforce it and turn it into a full tray to cover the center hole. I'm going to dissemble it and silicone seal all the mating edges.
    _
    Then probably use large head red rivets to put it back together. The large red rivets are sold for use on plastic race car bodies and I got a big box of them. Once I silicone the edges everywhere it is never coming apart again. I will use backer washers for the rivets.
    _
    I am going to make a 2" PVC pipe that mounts along the top edge of the window with holes facing the glass and hook that up to the air intake so when the shop vac is sucking the fresh air will be drawn in through the PVC and air wash the window. I already have a pressure pot sand blaster so I will probably use that to sandblast with via an adapter fitting. I will simply use the lower section of this unit to catch dirty blast media, not suck it in and blast with it.
    _
    I am going to make a multiple sieve media cleaning system with vibrator and air pressure to quickly clean the used media. Dust and other stuff from sand blasting will be sieved then air blasted to remove unwanted particles that are polluting the blast media. Dust does not work to sandblast with so lighter dust and other debris should be easy to expel with air pressure. Once I get that perfected I should be able to clean 50 lbs of blast media in a few minutes.
    _
    So far it is cleaning the bast media that seems to take as much time as sandblasting the parts. I need to automate/re-invent this part of the system.
