What Were Protestants Reforming?

The Roman Catholic Church is neither Roman, for the Empire fell long ago, it is not Catholic because it departed from the preservation of the Apostolic Tradition, and it isn’t a Church because the pope embraced heresy leading to the great schism of 1054 A.D. left the Church because the East refused to accept its innovations of papal supremacy and Filioque addition of the Nicene Constantinople Creed. So what was the Reformers reforming? Even after Luther’s death the Lutherans admitted the Orthodox Church was the one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, not Rome, so why had they continued in their reformation and further departure from the actual Church in the East? Political freedom from Rome’s taxation? Protestant autonomy and each their own pope already established? Just some thoughts.
