- Why did Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches split in 1054 A.D.? This video explores the political, cultural and theological issues between Eastern and Catholic faiths. For example, what is filioque and why was it important? What caused the Eastern Patriarch and the pope to fight? All of this is covered in this video in the Great Schism of 1054.

I’m pretty sure ZZ Top are Orthodox, Texas Orthodox.🧙🏿♂️🎸
Snd often bo brains under. Orthodox here.
This is outstanding. I am Catholic, my cousin is Orthodox. I remember he told me he doesn't have so much a theological issue with the filioque but that the Western Church did not have permission to do such a thing. I remember when Pope Benedict removed the title of Patriarch of the West from his titles. He did this in an effort to remove the bloviated titles of the pope. However, the Patriarch of Constantinople issued a rebuke as this was seen by the east as an attempt by the pope to be the patriarch of the world. It is fascinating. At the end of the day, we humans just have too much pride.
Good post. Yes...pride is a right little 'bug' in our character.
Was it Pope Benedict who removed that title? I always thought it was Pope Francis?
I agree with the Patriarch on this one. Surely there are other titles that could be dropped. Especially after all the work the past few decades in bringing the East & West closer.
There are theological reasons though outside of you can't change the creed. Mainly that if I understand correctly, that when speaking of the Trinity, it either has to be true of all of the members of the trinity, or only true about one. Thus you can't have the Holy Spirit coming from both the Father and the Son without (albeit inadvertently) calling into question the divinity of the Holy Spirit.
@@anitalitwiller2080 It's language. The Greek and Latin mean different things. Recent conversations suggest that both the west and east believe the same thing. The Holy Spirit is generated and proceeds from the father. The word proceeds in the west does not mean generated as it does in Greek. Rather I proceed out of my door but my house did not generate me. Christ can also send the Holy Spirit. However, in the Greek, it is better not to use the term as it would suggest Jesus generates the Holy Spirit. He does not. So the Catholic and Orthodox Church agree. John 15:26. Last note, this addition to the creed was added to fight heresy in the west that sought to show that Jesus was not fully God but that the Holy Spirit was another name for God. Anyways, I've read a ton on this. I have found that most people do not give an honest take of the various arguments. Language is a sticky thing. Words mean different things in different languages.
Your videos have changed my outlook on religion. I have watched approximately 95% of your UA-cam content. Your lectures on Tolkien have influenced me in a way that I will never forget. Thank You Sir.
That's a shame since he's a lost devil
As an Orthodox Christian I have to say that this is one of the best presentations of church history I have seen. A lot of historians have maintained that the eventbin 1054 was an excommunication of the entire Eastern and Western halves of the Church but in reality it was between just Humbert and the Patriarch. Thise excommunications were rescinded in the 1960's I believe.
They were, by Paul VI and Athenagoras. However, not all of the Orthodox Churches accepted the nullment of the anathemas and excommunications, some even saying that the monks at Mount Athos stopped naming Athenagoras in their prayers due to ecumenism.
I don't believe those "lifting of anathemas" have any force; The RC's are still estranged from the Orthodox Faith, and show no signs of repentance; In fact, in the last century or so, it's gotten worse.
I believe the best we can hope for is individual conversions to Orthodoxy.
@@nicodemuseam true story. The Roman Church has a very skewed view of history in that they will say the Orthodox split off from them as though we were the original Protestants. I had one guy who does a Catholic blog tell me the Orthodox Church didn't start until the 1600s!
I'm Eastern Orthodox and a Scot (Orthodox Christianity came to Scotland through St. Ninian who died in 432 AD). You did a good job here. Thank you for that.Sometimes people ask me if we Orthodox believe in Christ or read the Bible. It's pretty pitiful how little people know about Christian history. They must think the Bible fell from the sky!A few basic questions might be answered on the 'Theoria' UA-cam video's done by Fredrika Mathewes Green.
Orthodox is Roman Paganism
It is very interesting that people know so little about Orthodox. It does not matter if they are Coptic, Greek or Russian Orthodox. The lack of knowledge is astonishing to me. The people who have asked me about Orthodox are shocked to find out that the the western Church, known as the Roman Catholic, was the result of the schism. And many do not know of the resulting splits such as the Lutheran from the Roman Church. NIce to see other Orthodox here. Blessings.
Bonnie Johnston, that claim about St Ninian is totally false and crazy . It;s like you claiming that St Bede the Venerable was a secret Russian monk. Total fib! St. Ninian was a Briton who'd trained in Rome. His Episcopal See was named after St Martin of Tours ( Latin Church ). He was ALWAYS part of the Latin Church and ALWAYS obedient to the authority of the Pope. He had nothing to do with what you refer to as "Orthodox". That term was not in use when St. Ninian was alive. There's no association between St Ninian, what you now call "Orthodoxy". Next you'll also claim that St Patrick was a secret Greek cleric.
Respectfully, before 1054 there was no separate Roman Catholic Church. Rome in the West was a Patriarchy like Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch and the governing center was still Constantinople.
I thought St Ninian was in Scotland before there was an 'orthodox' church, when there was just the roman church(and various small sects). Any info?
I can´t believe these videos are much more interesting, not to mention more informative, than history channel documentaries, with all the money they invest in their productions

History channel goal is not inform but propaganda
that's the tragedy of trying to appeal to a wider audience - you have to lose substance in the process

@@jbarton1541 oh do you? Let's just play every thought, every word you say, and every physical action you take on tv, for the world to see how "good" of a person you really are.
Also, with no God, there is no objective definition of "good" anyways. All you have is your own, miniscule opinion.

"Goodness" requires a likeness to that which is Good; In the case of the Orthodox Christian, Who; The God-man Jesus Christ, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
I daresay that without faith in God, the Holy Trinity, and in particular the person of the God-man Jesus Christ and His death and Resurrection, with the fullness of the Orthodox Faith, you have no justification for your worldview.
On what basis do you logic? On what basis do you science? What foundation have your morals?
The most important question: What is going to happen when you die?
Nothing good, I'm afraid. The same goes for me, in my current state: An Orthodox Christian lacking repentance towards God. I am the worst man I know... Yet God, in His mercy, provides for our sustenance, gives us to rise each day for another shot at repentance...
Maybe today is the day that you give up your false autonomy, and cry out to Jesus Christ to save you from this bitter life full of death and decay. He stands at the door; Do you let Him into your life?
God is everywhere present and fills all things; the uncontainable, uncircumscribable, immaterial(excepting the human nature of Jesus), all-merciful, all-loving, all-powerful God, Who, in this moment, holds you in existence despite your unbelief in Him.
Your whole life He's been angling for your attention; He's hidden in His Commandments, and I'm sure you know some of them by heart: Do not steal, do not murder, honor your mother and father... Love your God with all your strength and all your mind and all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself;
There are times that you've done good and you've known it. There are times that you've done evil, and you know that it was wrong. Your conscience, the voice of God inside you, which cries out when everything inside and outside is silent...
It is why you drown yourself in noise, in pleasures, in company, in sleep; Anything to push away the silence and the thought of your death, like the yawning void it represents in your future existence...

My struggle for decades to find the early church like in the story of the Apostles prompted me to dig through the internet (UA-cam) Thank God I finally found the orthodox church
A very clear and simple explanation to me. The History Channel left true history a long time ago when they started programs like ‘American Pickers’.

The Orthodox way is really rewarding, it opens the heart and awakens the mind
The answers to my deepest questions I found (and I WAS searching!) in orthodoxy, in writings of fathers, monks. And I am not an Orthodox. Yet. Orthodoxy most of all has those truly saintly men and women that God greatly worked through the lives of. Just by reading their biographies one can become a Christian, that's how inspiring it is.

Mariology is bad doctrine. E.O. practices this. I’d avoid it for that reason.
I was raised in a Protestant Church and have since come back into communion with Rome. I spent much time exploring Orthodoxy. I cry every time I think about the schism (which is often). As one born an outsider to both Churches and a child of divorce it is absolutely heartbreaking that our two Churches are in schism. It honestly felt like my parents asking me to choose a parent when exploring Western and Eastern Churches.
What made you choose Roman Catholic instead of Orthodox?
@@chayanroychoudhury3091 I think there is one major reason and that is papal authority. Now I know thatd a firestorm from my experience in the Orthodox realm but hear me out I'm not some "Deus Vult everyone must unconditionally submit" kind of guy. I want to emphasize that I'm not a theologian and wont try to act like one. It seems to me (I'm sure there are exceptions) that most Orthodox that I've encountered have 0 interest in reunion with the West at all which to me is anti biblical how Jesus wanta the church to be one just as he and the Fatherare one. I wont claim that Rome always is correct but just as Satan inflitrated the RC with peodophile prelots I think he also inflitrated the EO with bitterness and lack of desire to reunite. If our churches could come back think of how strong we could be to muater against new atheism or the attack of Islam. So by papal authority I mean the power the pope has to act as the head of the church and make disputing bishops sit down and talk it out with councils. Like a parent making two fighting children ait down amd make up after a fight. Again I'm no theologian but what I saw between Moscow and Constantinople over Ukraine made me think this is why we need a pope a third party to settle these infighting disputes.
@@LucasKellis That makes sense. Thanks a lot.
Why did you go back to the church knowing satan has infiltrated it?
@@anthonycarroll6546 Because Satan's infiltration does not change the fact it is the authentic original church. More so I find it cowardly that anyone would rather leave than fight to reclaim Christs Church.
This is the Western Scism. The Western Church was the one that delivered the letter of excommunication to the Eastern Church because the Western Church established 1 man to be in absolute rule over the Church. Also, a Pope then went ahead and ordered the Changing of the Nicene Constantinople Creed. The Pope was only supposed to be first among equals, not absolute ruler.
thank you for this explanation of the schism. i am a (Russian) Orthodox Christian born and raised in america originally as a first baptist. you are the first non orthodox person to present a non biased view of the schism that i can appreciate. the only issue i take with presentation is that in 2004 when the patriarch and the pope recited the nicene creed as it has been since it was created, you failed to mention that westerners did ask pope john paul II why he agreed to recite the creed in its original form and he acknowledged that it is carved in stone in its original form without the filioque above St. Peter's entrance. but again, best non biased presentation of schism that i can appreciate

Three points stood out for me: a) East/West mindset b) Authority c) filioque
a) The side-by-side pictures of Eastern Orthodox Bishops and Pope illustrates the worldview divide between East/West.
Eastern culture values community, conformity
Western culture values individuality, independence
b) Authority- I believe this difference in worldview played a part in why the West wanted independence from the East ( Let's not forget the role of the sinful nature acting in the lives of the West's Church leaders...power corrupts...)
c) By providing the political and theological context, you gave me the best explanation of why filioque was such a big deal
Thanks. I'm a new subscriber.

If you’re Catholic, these Bible truths are shared out of love for you, because you may not know what God has declared to you in His Holy Word.
Read through the list and see what the Bible reveals about the leaders of the Catholic Church.
You don’t have to understand all of the prophecies and their fulfillment, just simply read through the study to see how the Bible specifically describes the Catholic Church.
The Bible foretold that the church of the antichrist would be are arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with precious stones.
“The woman (apostate church) was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.” Revelation 17:4
“The color for bishops and other prelates is purple, for cardinals scarlet… The pectoral cross should be made of gold and… decorated with gems…” (Source: Our Sunday Visitor’s Catholic Encyclopedia, 1991, p. 175, 178, 466)
The Bible foretold that the Harlot (false Church) would assert power over ALL of the Earth.
“Then he said to me, ‘The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.’ ” Revelation 17:15

It is tragic that Our Lord Jesus echoed the words of Isaias repeating the warnings about men setting aside the Commandments of God for the teachings of men: "Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men" (Isaiah 29:13) "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me but in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." (Matt 15:8-9).... "How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?" (John 5:44)....
Tragic answer is "For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." (John 12:43)
sadly:
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. (Jon 2:8) and those that hold men in admiration could care less what God has said...
As someone brought up in the west as a Protestant, this is all very fascinating and also very sad. Jesus’s prayer in the gospel of John chapter 17 expresses His desire that we might be one together with Him and with the Father. I’ve noticed Greek, Russian and Coptic orthodox still use plenty of icons still
Orthodox houses in Ukraine were supposed to have a "red corner" with icon or the home would be considered unholy. Idolatry is MANDATORY in Orthodoxy. There are official russian Orthodox churches "of Vladimir-Suzdal icon of Mary", for example. Whole CHURCHES dedicated to worshiping a single piece of wood from somewhere else, which includes icons of Bloody Nicholas, the Czar, Stalin, and now even putin. At this point, Orthodoxy is tied with Bank of Vatican's peado-Catholicism and Donald-trump worshiping protestants for the three most ridiculous Christian denominations.
@@KasumiRINA right on!
It's because it never was a dividing issue. Iconoclasm was strangling the Eastern Church and the Western Church fought against it, but so did the holy men of the Eastern Church.
The 7th Ecumenical Council, held in Constantinople, condemned iconoclasm as a heresy and reestablished icons in worship. This is a commonly venerated council between Orthodox and Catholics.
While this period of Christian history can be used as an example of rising tensions between the East and West, it cannot be said at all that iconoclasm was a dividing issue between the Orthodox and the Catholics, both of whom hate and condemn iconoclasm.
I'm very familiar with this history. It seemed the last time the Eastern Roman army did anything for the Bishop of Rome was coming to the Italian peninsula to oust the Ostrogoths. When they got there, the Ostrogoths mysteriously disappeared never to be heard from again. The Byzantine army went back to Constantinople and then the Pope and his Catholics faced another threat - the Lombards. That was when they called upon the Franks for assistance and the Franks eventually became the militant guardians of the Roman Church and of course, this led to the formation of the Holy Roman Empire with a Frankish king as its emperor. This is why the conversion of the Franks was so vital to the survival of the Roman Catholic faith.
You've done such a great job of explaining such a complex issue. Thanks for making this.

They cannot unite as long as the Bishop of Rome claims that he is the Vicar of Christ on Earth.
I, as a catholic, also longing for unity. One thing that really needed is godly humility from each other.
Wow, you are an excellent teacher. Thank you for posting this account.
Thank you for this. Much needed content. Fantastic explanation. I knew some of the story, but this really cleared it up.
Thank you for posting this lecture. Very informative. Being born to a Calvinist mother and E Orthodox father... this was something of a contradiction in teaching and belief! You have done much to clarify the issues both theological and historical. Presented in an interesting and disinterested fashion, as all your lectures are.
wow! THAT is some match!
Christmas and Easter must be interesting at your house
Very good information on how this all happened. We Greek Orthodox and the Roman Catholics once and a while have joint Sunday Liturgy/Mass together at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in Atlanta GA. May God guide us all back as one church again.
I very much doubt that. In order to be an Orthodox Liturgy, there has to be communion - and in order to be a Catholic Mass, there has to be communion. There is very little chance that you are communing together. If that's what you're doing, eventually both sides will work to put a stop to it.
Vincent, that will never happen, as your Satanic sect allows anyone to divorce and for any reason, and you have no order in your Churches due to rejecting many Catholic ecumenical councils that established hierarchies in worship.
Vincent, yours is the best & most constructive comment I have read so far. We all need to be united again.
This is abominable, and worthy of deposition. Saint Paul commanded us to never pray with heretics or those of a different faith, let alone have a joint liturgy. Read the opinion of every single church father of the modern era on ecumenism and the life of Saint Mark of Ephesus...
quote--a while have joint Sunday Liturgy/Mass together---unquote----WHERE in the Holy Bible does It state that God rested, blessed AND sanctified the FIRST day of the week? WHO made Sunday a holly day? It WAS NOT GOD!!!! Must have been man !! What "man"has the right/authority to change what God has blessed AND sanctified????
Ive seen a couple of documentaries about the church and from what I saw, things that happened are bound to happen.

Thank you for this concise understanding of the root of the Schism between the East and West. I've often thought that pride and wanting power were really two keys behind the splitting of the Body of Christ.
Great video series brother - this one in particular was excellent and well balanced
As a non-believer interested in the history of religions I found this video very instructive. It did nothing to change my views but that was not its intent. It was clear, concise and explained the topic very well.
Understandable. Church politics can be extremely damaging and divisive to even the most ardent believer.
I've rejuvenated my Christian walk by going back to the basics where I study the scripture as to how relates and benefits mankind on a personal level.
I'm reading Tony Dungy's (ex NFL ciacj) daily devotoonal "Dare to be uncommon"
It really is a well written uplifting book to begin the day with. It brings a short dsily scripture into contact with our world.

How are you faring? Still agnostic?
@@suppaman12 Hello and thank you for the question. Technically, we are all agnostic because no-one can 'know' gods exist, only believe or not.
At 65 years old, I have been an agnostic atheist for over 40 years and as a student of religion and the bible for much of that time, I have found nothing to change my view.
I do not and cannot know there is no god but I do not believe there is.
I am a humanist. I am convinced that the supernatural does not exist and, as such we must do our best to help each other, the planet and the other forms of life with which we share it. We must take pride in our achievements and resposibility for our failures and crimes, without needing to thank or worship a diety for the good, or blame one for the bad.

@@Murlo. 😂 I like it.
But, if you will, let’s pretend you’re serious for a moment, to allow me make a point. I hope it’s not too boring.
It is interesting that the Devil character is entirely absent from the bible and is a post biblical invention, using ideas borrowed from Hellenism and then applied in error to misunderstood passages.
Satan simply means opposer or adversary and is a role or function, not a name. We might think of it as a 'devil's advocate' whose job is to be a contending voice in debate.
Lucifer is even more fascinating. It comes from two incorrect translations laid atop of each other.
Firstly, a translation of a Hebrew phrase in Isaiah, “shining one, son of the dawn” which was a sarcastic reference to a Babylonian king with delusions of grandeur.
It was translated into Greek by the Septuagint as Theophorous which was another name for the planet Venus, also known as the morning star.
Later, in his translation to Latin, Jerome used the word Lucifer, which was the planet’s other name.
From all that we get the idea of Satan as person and Lucifer as Satan, and the post biblical development of the Devil came to be associated with the word Satan and the name Lucifer but all of it is the invention of men, after the bible was written, and is merely folklore.
So, your funny comment just shows how men can create their own demons and then convince themselves they are real and that is why only Christians are possessed. It’s in their minds.
Have a good one.
Such beautiful lectures. Thanks for your work, doc!
Great lecture. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
LOVE IT!! Thanks for your hard work and gracious spirit. I'm a typical Evangelical/ Baptist preacher's kid / charismatic / Christian., I began stumbling on the Orthodox Church about 15 years ago, and was shocked, amazed, and delighted to find that I was brother to the largest Christian Church in the world. I went back and looked at my church history textbook from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and was shocked to discover that the entire subject of the great schism was given one page in our textbook! Talk about a myopic view point! Anyway, loved this teaching, look forward to listening to lots more.

God bless all my Orthodox and Catholic brethren out there from the Church of the East ❤
I pray for East and West to be united.
do you want the catholic church to unite with the orthodox church or the opposite?
I'm not so sure both need to be cleansed or corrected first. I think the most important thing is that both churches accept who the actual head of the church needs to be. Hint hint, it's not the Pope. And it's not the Patriarchy either. (It's Jesus.) It's a shame the schism has lasted so long, given that this has come up before. See Luke 22:24 etc. Point is, fighting over who will be the greatest is the wrong fight. And really, fighting over who will be the greatest is the primary factor in the divisions that have happened in the church.
More or less, the Protestant Reformation was the result of people realizing just how much the Catholic Church had been corrupted. They had invented theology, kept the people ignorant of their special relationship with Christ, weakened Christ's power over death, and muddied the Gospel with idol worship. At the time, much of the Catholic Church agreed with the reformation. They were ousted from the church prior to the Catholic Reformation, which cemented the view to be the polar opposite of the reformation. It's all just power grabs.
The thing is, most of theology is pointless to squabble over. Will Christ come pre or post tribulation? Should we remember notable historical figures or not? What should be the place of tradition in the church? These are important, but they are not worth the division that exists within the church. The only thing of importance within Christianity is Romans 10:9. "If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." That establishes who is the lord of the church, and from that there's not much room for infighting.
I question whether or not the Catholic Church has strayed too far from accepting Romans 10:9. The Pope is not the head of the Church. The Pope does not save from sin. And neither can any Saint or other Christian. And, you can not save yourself from sin through works. Nor are works required to save. (Nor do they aid in salvation.) So long as the Catholic Church dethrones God for a man with a shiny hat and denies the saving power of Christ, how am I supposed to justify calling them Christians? They are no different from pagans. They worship a fancy pantheon of human men and believe that their own deeds are meritorious enough to grant them access to heaven. But I somehow doubt that all Catholics truly believe the theology of the Pope. Romans 10:9 isn't that well hidden, nor is it the only passage that conveys the same meaning (both testaments scream the same thing on repeat... it can get a little annoying, even). It's just a very concise version of it.
If the Catholic Church ever decides to accept Romans 10:9, then there really isn't any reason all of the churches can't finally reunite under one banner, which is Christ. If all report to Jesus alone, why are we calling ourselves different names when in so doing we hinder others from finding Christ? Christ's mission is to spread the Gospel and make Disciples not to convolute the Gospel and scare people away with complex history lessons in minutia nobody cares to sit through just to learn that none of it really matters. Yeah, your history lessons are fun for the history nerds, but most people are not history nerds. Myself excluded, apparently.
Na, it was united and two fat heads messed it up.
mathig nihilcek no basically what we have here are 2 governing bodies that want ultimate authority because of greed and popularity. There’s a god complex within the pope for sure, to have gone along and changed up scriptures or meanings on it own - through its own interpretations, thus leading the masses to astray and allowed to be taken over by a satanic cult doctrine that was originally out of Babylon by these Pharisees Christ pointed out in the first place when they started a belief system. The very secret they keep from people is that they are divine in their own right and like Christ in the flesh. They built a church of stone and Christ god built a temple in us. They keep us in them so we won’t ever know who we are. People will always be looking outside of them self’s for salvation when it’s always been in the temples God gave us. Know thyself and step out of man made madness. It’s part of the beast system these controllers use to keep us captive.
That's not necessary. Catholics split from orthodoxy because orthodoxy by definition means abiding by the old ways. Then catholics further split into thousands of churches and denominations. So they'd need to come back to the old and true ways in that case.
Another excellent, interesting and informative lecture. Great content.
The fact that there was an argument and a whole council about this proves christs absence of divinity at one point in history

Thank you Ryan. Very clear and cogent presentation.
The idea of leavened vs unleavened bread is of course to Orthodox is show that Christ is risen as the bread is risen and it is a new passover this time a passover from death to life.
The unleavened bread is purely about the Passover in Exodus 12, with the unleavened bread and unblemished lamb consumed to make the journey to the Promised Land. The Passover is symbolic of our spiritual journey (hopefully) to Home, called Heaven. Christ, our Lord and Master, spoke of this in John 6:31-33. Manna was unleavened. Symbolism is important to our Lord. It is a mirror image of the Truth Eternal, or what is TRULY Sacred and Holy. That which is symbolic of Eternal makes it holy and sacred on earth, a reflection of IT. Human marriage is sacred and holy BECAUSE its mirrors [reflects] the Eternal, the Marriage of the Bridegroom, Christ, to the Bride, the Church. Christ is the Bridegroom of your soul, your true Eternal Lover. The Church is perfectly One in Heaven by this very possession of our souls. But only through the Immaculate One, called Mother. Mother speaks of an Eternal, if only in Christ. The Incarnation of the Word took place FIRST in Her Heart and Soul, Virgin EVER!
@Weberman Elisheva Explain how we are idol worshippers.
Plus leavened bread is shared with priest (priest eats a piece of that) having symbolic meaning
@@iNdUsTrIaLrOcKeR4U "Your fathers ate the bread Moses gave them in the desert, and they are dead. The bread that I will give you leads to eternal life". So why not use leavened bread to demonstrate the new reality of the risen Lord?
@@groblerful Actually the manna in Exodus was unleavened bread...

I just want to thank you for taking a completely neutral stance on this and just sharing the facts, too many times I see educators and people in the comments pushing down certain narratives based on their biases like the Pope just wanted to usurp power and thats why we are no longer in communion with the east and vice versa, you can really tell there's a lot of anti this or that mindset and sentiments and it's easy for any one of us to follow in the echo chamber as we see our own beliefs or faiths attacked.
Fascinating video and lecture, thank you very much Mr Reeves!
PS
What software are you using for making your videos? I'm impressed by you managing to keep viewers attention with your voice and image switching so it never gets boring.
It is extremely misleading to claim that the Orthodox church began with the Great Schism of 1054; after all, if the Orthodox church did not predate the Schism, what body was there to schism? Acknowledgement should at least be made that Orthodox themselves, if asked to say when their church started, would uniformly say "on Pentecost, in 33 A.D.," since Orthodoxy is nothing other than the continuation through time of the church of the Apostles.
Joseph Burton is that what you think or what you can prove? Our Church services haven’t changed in the last 800 years and that is longer than all protestant Churches have existed. Do you know what that change was? We added a prayer to our liturgy while the Priest cuts the antitherone (lamb of the blessed bread for communion) he prays for every single living parishioner and those who fell asleep to the Lord. There are over 400 scriptures quoted during each liturgy. Every part of our liturgy is backed by the scripture that the Orthodox Church originally wrote to support it’s Church style specifically, and and compiled it along with the epistles that were written to solve problems within the Church. But if you think that the original Church is fake... that means that you don’t know anything about the Orthodox Church and that, by itself, makes your wrong. We are still following the commandments and I believe that bearing false witness is one of them.
Joseph Burton Icons are paint on wood... we use them to tell the scripture with images. Nobody worships them, because we worship The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. Worship is from the heart, and if you claim to know someone’s heart, then you are being deceived.
You must have not watched the video. Catholics make the same claim exact claim.
The only claim the Catholics hold is Anathema in regard to the trinity, subordination to israelite practice regarding unleavened bread, and ultimately Tyranny by usurping an absolute democratic Holy and Catholic Orthodox Church.
Alright, let's make something abundantly clear. There was a schism in 1054 between Eastern and Western Christianity. Both sodes like to make psuedo-polite argument that one side or the other was "the true church" and that the other are a bunch if schismatic heretics, and proceed, as some have done here, to call the other a liar guilty of false witness for claiming one way or another, something which will ultimately never be resolved aa far as any of us can see until kingdom and judgment come, so let's just agree that egardless of whose side is the more or less justified in their righteous indignation toward the other, that the Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church first started to formally and officially distinguish itself from one another in 1054.
I just gotta thank you, dude, your videos are so good.
