Hozier: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 тра 2014
- Andrew Hozier-Byrne's voice is so rich, so vital and so soulful, I'm certain I'll follow his music for a long time to come. The 24-year-old Irishman, who performs under the name Hozier, opens this set with the brilliant and instantly grabby song "Take Me to Church," about passion, sex and religion.
Hozier's music is based in the blues, and you'll hear the singer-guitarist's love for Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker during the second song he performs here. His band - piano, guitar, percussion - steps aside for the swampy "To Be Alone," in which the blues provide a starting place for his high, yearning vocals and deep questioning. Hozier has just two EPs out, and both have me yearning to hear more. --BOB BOILEN

Hozier could sing the Terms and Conditions Policy and he’d still be my favorite
LITERALLY
Anna Haus PREACH, MAMA! Yassss!
A lot more people would know what was in them if he did sing them.
👌🙌👌🙌
This is the best thing I've ever heard
it’s such a shame that most people only know him for one song when his entire discography is amazing
All of his songs are just... ❤️ Especially how he write his songs
@@RyanTheCreator yeah i’m just saying that all his songs deserve the love that take me to church has gotten
@@wildelio yeah take me to church is good don’t get me wrong but like someone new?? Jackie and Wilson?? They deserve more hype
@@campbellking25 I LOVE THOSE YES
exactly!!! his 2 albums are both a no skip album
ok but can we talk abt how good he is at taking rlly dark shit and making it sound gorgeous and romantic, like cherry wine does that lyrically and stylistically. he’s singing as someone who is in an abusive relationship but still sees it as a romantic and soft love, and this song is rlly dark but the actual delivery of it is so gentle and romantic (and it’s called ‘cherry wine’ for gods sake, it has such a Soft title)
Elina Marie i never could really make out the words he was saying in the studio version but now that i heard it here I'm blown away
i think qhen he's not tenderly singing, he kills people like dexter LOL
He's 6'5" and makes that strat look like a toy. Jesus.

I've had a look into Cherry Wine but I can't seem to find the significance you are inferring. Could you elaborate?
His guitar skills called me untalented in 25 different languages
I mean there’s really nothing special. Look at Keith Urban if you really want to feel like a failure 😂😂 even better, Keith Urban with John Mayer Don’t Let Me Down live
@ok zoomer I’m sorry but anyone who can play guitar can play guitar and sing lol
@ok zoomer I guess im the kind of special who knows that once you have the muscle memory you can pretty much do anything while playing lol

Same bro
cherry wine is one of the greatest songs ever written.
AGREE!
This song is about domestic abuse, right? The woman beats the the protagonist, producing the blood reminiscent of cherry wine. Am I interpreting that correctly?
Daniel Isaacs you're absolutely right
Daniel Isaacs there is no such thing as an incorrect interpretation
It ain't about unicorn farts, I can tell you that
Hozier has to be one of THE most underrated musicians of our time
Gen Z doesn't have great tastes ALL the time.... But I mean, I think I know one other who "listens" to Hozier...
In other words they just know take me to church..
But I mean... We aren't all terrible

He’s pretty popular man, I think he deserves what he has
I mean he has 15 million monthly listeners on Spotify..... but I do get where you’re coming from, like I wish he had more fans who loved all his songs, not just take me to church or his other famous songs, mainly that one though.
aurora too
His songwriting is a direct result of his affinity for complex literature. Not only a pure musical talent but incredibly intelligent as well. Love him
He is a brainmonster!!
this is the perfect discription!
Dude. Autotune uses Hozier.

Jim Gregg Thank you for this message. It reminded me of that stressful place I was in two months ago. I was laid off last week, and I have two prospects I’m interviewing for. The universe rescued me...it’s so relieving.

also this one and his performance at the billboard music awards

I for real thought it was a woman singing the high notes as backup in the recordings
FRR its crazy how good he is
UA-cam had the AUDACITY to interrupt Cherry Wine with an ad smh
Right?!
try ublock!
I didn't realize how good he was at the guitar until this video. Playing the bass "E" and maintaining consistent rhythm while also playing the licks of "To Be Alone" and "Cherry Wine" was really impressive
Stephen Ecobiza I’m trying to learn it and it takes me about 2-3 weeks for each of his songs at this point to be able to sing at the same time
I know!! And the fact that he can sing while doing that is incredible
It’s not a very complicated technique, but the way he wrote the melodies for the guitar parts on those is just stunning. They’re so beautiful.
With the Capo it would be a bass F note assuming standard tuning. But yeah incredibly talented
Those songs have really simple base lines and melodies though so it doesn’t take long to learn

Alright first of all Hozier is the one but can we all just take a second to realize how bomb his eyebrows are?
+Kanthalina Andreus As a dude, I wish other guys would understand that getting your eye brows done is actually awesome. Women notice. :)
+Dylan stanford Yeah. I certainly notice. I won't automatically judge a guy just based on that but it is nice to see a guy who grooms himself well and is concerned about his appearance. As much as we tell ourselves it's what's on the inside that matters, outside appearances do factor a lot in judgements that we make about ourselves and each other. But yeah, he has nice eyebrows.

I also love that as soon as someone says, "nice band," he says, "yeah, they're great." Then he proceeds to play a song, alone, called, "To Be Alone."
The ease with which he hits that high G# at 6:44 is pretty impressive. Even Jeff Buckley started to struggle at that pitch.
James Mills yeah right. I saw Jeff at Siné (I lived half a block away). Jeff could hit the G# falsetto with ease. Gracefully. Studying qawwalli with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan... hearing Jeff live was heavenly. The most incredible thing was he never strained his voice. I only wish he and Nusrat F.A. Khan recorded together. I photographed bands for a living. NEVER heard anyone sing like Jeff. Hosier doesn't come close. He's more like Nick Drake mixed with Van Morrison.
@@BHAKTIBROPHY What a privileged to have had the opportunity of see him.
Not that it matters but pretty sure it's a G not a G#, play it on a keyboard if you have one

were you new to npr's tiny desk concerts?
...i've listened to countless ones and almost got used to their amazing sound ;)
these guys work is absolutely priceless!
@seppstarthebest they are one of the best on this tiny planet. It is hard to listen to the originals from artists hosted at tiny desk concerts. :)
It's so weird to hear take me to church without the enormous plate reverb but the plunky piano and the quiet chorus of oohs in the background almost has the same effect. The artists that do tiny desks have so many different ways of translating their sound to the stripped down setup and we can always rely on the tech staff to make sure we can tell exactly what they're trying to do, that's what makes tiny desk solid gold.
It's so interesting to me, the contrast between his bold and amazing vocals and his quiet and laid back speaking voice. I love it!
He's like the Male version of florence Welch
To Be Alone is a masterpiece. How does he carry his own bass line on the E AND play the A - e strings like that? Wow.
The way he uses the sustained “pedal tone” in To Be Alone and Cherry Wine drives my very soul. Something about the repetition gives the songs their own heartbeats and dissonant character. Never fails to get me a bit emotional. Such goosebumps
Props to him. The main riff on To Be Alone is pretty difficult to play while singing at the same time.
The coolest thing with Hozier is that he wrote the whole album all by himself. Except 'Someone New' wish he wrote with one other person.
just like almost every musicians ...
many artists that get high up in the charts don't write their own songs, so it is quite cool to be fair
Indeed, real cool
Because that album made him get to the charts. now I doubt his new songs will be written by him.
Why wouldn't he keep writing his own music? That's what he's spent the last couple of years doing actually.
He's so shy and awkward. I LOVE HIM!

Dear heaven, you don't realise how he's grown and matured since Take Me To Church released and I miss this younger version of him but I also love who he is now and I'm so torn
Iréne-Mari van der Walt I saw him twice last year and I think he’s grown a lot in terms of confidence on stage. He also interacted a lot with the audience at both shows which was cool
Hozier bridges the gap that many people see between music and other Art. The songs that this man creates are just as beautiful, timeless, and significant as Cathedrals built in the middle ages, as paintings done by the old masters, and by poems written long ago. His music is Artistic in a way that a lot of musicians today fail to capture
Hozier has outstanding projection in his voice, holy hell. He is so wonderful
Why is it always about SINGING with females . The singer is always the most musically ignorant one in a band . Mozart , Bach , Paganini , Miles Davis , John Coltrane , ect. ect. didn't sing ! Try mastering a musical instrument ! The dumbing down of music ! If any of these musical genius's of the past were alive in today's dumbed down world they would never win a Grammy for record of the year !
wow, I just said he was a good singer. Haha, relax!
mslindsvlog
He also plays a f'n MUSICAL INSTRUMENT and you didn't think that was important enough to comment on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mslindsvlog
Music ISN'T all about SINGING ! Bach , Mozart or Miles Davis would have never made it on " The Voice " or "American Idol" . The dumbing down of music ! People are to lazy or stupid to try and master a musical instrument anymore but everyone want's to be on stage . Go buy a musical instrument and learn to play it well ! Sorry if that was to negative for you princess .
It's over, what does any of this even matter for? When you're dead, rotting in the ground, you're not going to think about how music is dumbing down the people of today's society. I think you're taking this out of proportion. Can I not make a comment saying, in my opinion, that he is a great singer without getting some guy like you bashing on me and throwing a temper tantrum over it? I feel sorry that you spend your day attacking people over the internet for harmlessly making a comment that had no intentions of starting any sort of shit. Take your aggression and pent up anger onto something more productive than starting a fully fledged argument on UA-cam. Stop prodding me over a comment I posted days ago, it's completely irreverent.

This man's range is a feat for mankind.
He just release his new album Wasteland Baby! I hope NPR invites him again to sing his new songs.
jesus his live performance is better than studio imo thats crazy...
He's so modest and shy, there are many who aren't so talented. But these are snobbish and cocky on stage. He's in a class of his own.
I saw Hozier live in Paris a couple of years ago and it was one of the absolute best concert of my life. There's something so thick, tangible about his music. You can actually feel it around you, through you. Beautiful.
reading the other comments, I wonder about why people are so negative. This is an attractive man with an amazing amount of talent. personally i like the long hair, and I am very fond of the Irish accent. On top of all that, he is an amazing poet. So let's celebrate that. Why do people have to be so negative about admiration shown to others? For gosh sake can't we just celebrate the human condition? And admire the heck out of extraordinary talent as this man has?
People insist on putting down others when they are unhappy with their own achievements, or worse, look at someone and see an "other," someone or something they don't understand and fear.
putting people on pedestals isn't for everyone. The more people are content with their life, the easier it is for them to acknowledge and accept someones talent. But why does everyone always have to like the same thing as everyone else? Why can't you accept that there's different people from different walks of life.Digustibus non est disputandum.I like his music and appreciate his public appearances, not that it matters.
absolutely love this guy and he is very handsome im a man and can comfortably say that plus he's irish aswell!
