    These are pretty underrated action adventures. They are well shot, well acted, not too angsty like most YA adaptations, and really, the YA label taints them more than helps them. Wes Ball is a true visualist with a great flair for composition and action-giving these films genuine grit and personality. Something most YA films lack. They aren't revolutionary and the plotting can get rather convoluted...but these are highly entertaining films.

      marked hazard well they kinda did but the closest scene that was like that was the tunnel scene in the books. It was where they meet a group of cranks and the leader and group wants to rip them apart to replace what they lost. (The leader wanted to fix his nose by taking theirs, etc.) it was horrible but they were still smart and was able to find them and all

    • @gamerboy3342
      @gamerboy3342 6 років тому +30

      tentenwolfgirl yeah I feel if they would have followed the crank formula from the books it would have been more creative and it would have created real tension and almost horror sequences. But it would have taken action scenes out of the movie which were all really well done and the zombie formula works and sells so doing something different was probably a risk they weren’t willing to take no matter how much the fans of the book would have loved it

      Well with the tunnel scene and the hotel scene in the beginning could be very similar to what they had but changed it with more intelligence and maybe dialogue from the cranks to add more intensity. The chases and all could stay pretty much the same. Like the little girl could be more blunt talking about how her mom killed herself and some weird story to get them close to her then try to attack them. I'm not to mad I loved the tunnel scene but I don't see them as Cranks

      The point is he specifically mentions the perfect spacing of their line, only messed up by the guy at the end who is clearly too far behind messing up the equal spacing. The artistic point there is that the empty slot in that line messing up their perfect spacing is the one winston was SUPPOSED to be in. Obviously he couldn't be there due to the whole dying thing, but the shot of their line was meant to reference the now missing member of the group.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 років тому +6

      +Horrormado I think your misinterpreting the "no tech involved" statement. Its the sort of dystopian universe where there is clearly a ton of high tech stuff, but its mostly in the background environment or wielded by the enemies while the good guys mostly live and fight in a very primitive way. Its a pretty classic trope (well-funded, high tech bad guys against the poor, lower tech good guys), this series just exaggerates it a little more than most with the "underdogs" using almost no tech whatsoever and having to exist solely on their own intelligence and resolve.

    • @horrornado9121
      @horrornado9121 6 років тому

      So, Neil Briggs, what your saying is they leaned on clichéd tropes of the genre? If they had stuck more closely to the book (instead of completely forsaking it) this would have played out much more to your liking. In the end of this book, they had no guns, unlike the film.

    It honestly makes me so happy to see these movies getting the recognition they deserve in these videos. A lot of people bitch about how much they deviated from the source, but, honestly? the books weren't that great. It has some good ideas that Dashner could only come up with weak explanations for, and the movies honestly help to make a lot more sense of them, while weeding out the shit that doesn't matter. Not to mention that dylan o'brien is a fantastic actor, and really doesn't get the credit he deserves for it, critically.
    Wes Ball really did impress me with his vision; not to mention practical effects, stunts, amazing set and sound design. Thanks for giving the credit this movie deserves.

      Is it so hard to say that both are good? The movies are beautiful in terms of sound and visual, the acting is great and the pacing is nice. The books are well written, the world the writer built (because let's not forget, the movies are based on the books, the books had nothing to be based on) is interesting and frightening, and same goes for the story. Hell, there are some artistic choices that the movies make that seriously bring down that world building compared to the books. Choosing to make the Cranks simple zombies instead of humans that have lost their mind, but have kept their intellect.

      Trust me, I had read all 5 of them, and I know the movies are very different from the books. As an example, things like teleporters (those teleportation gates use by Thomas/Stephen to get to the Scorch in the 2nd one, to the safe place at the end of the 3rd one and by Deedee/Teresa at the end of the 4th one), WICKED being the actual cause of the Flare appearing, Brenda working for them and actually being immune, the hole Scorch being another test, etc are not included at all. With that said, I still believe it is a good and well made movie. I'm not judging it for how book-accurate it is (which btw is not more then 30-40% of its lore), but by how the movie is itself. It has an outstanding cast, great special affects and a very good story (even if it's not the one from the books). So I'm saying it again: It's an cool and well made movie.

    You were right that reading the books would've ruined the movie, they're so much better, also Spoiler warning:
    I still think the cranks from the books are scarier, they're like zombies but fully aware of and even enjoy what they're doing. They're also smarter so they're more dangerous. I'd much rather fight a zombie than a book crank. They also made it out that all the kids are immune to the flare which means they've already removed one of the most meaningful deaths in the books, my one hope is that they change the love triangle solution, the way they solved it in the books was dissapointing to say the least.

    I personally really loved all of the Maze Runner movies. They were made well and always had me on the edge wondering what could happen. Some parts were a little obvious, but sometimes you have to have obvious things happen then blow your mind with a completely different event. My favorite thing in the last two movies were Teressa, and being able to see her inner-battle of what is right and wrong, and what is better and worse without Thomas.

    I think you're making a fantastic decision seeing the movies before you read the books. I just saw The Death Cure at an early screening on Thursday and i can safely say that the movies and the books are two completely different entities in my head. Also in my opinion, the movies actually did the whole story of The Maze Runner trilogy in a much better way. The screenwriters took out a lot of the highly implausible elements expressed in the books and added other things in from the two prequel books that would've taken two other entire movies to explain otherwise. The Maze Runner movie trilogy was a highly competent series in comparison to the other YA series we've seen in the past (mainly referring to how terribly Divergent ended up along with the entire Twilight series) and it was an extremely memorable few years of cinema.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 років тому +3

      In general I agree with you, and in most cases I'd just say its better to just view the books and the movies as two separate entities or at least go into the movies with the default assumption they will be different so as not to be disappointed.
      I do want to push back on the twilight line though. Regardless of what you think of the books, a huge part of how the books presented the story was through bella's internal dialogue due to the first person viewpoint. That simply was never something that could be adapted well in the movies and once you strip that element from the story your left with characters and plotlines that were never all that developed or interesting in the first place. Personally, I enjoyed the books but it was mostly due to that entertaining tone from bella as the narrator while the story itself largely dragged for about 2.5 books through the middle of the series. Also, I feel that series like twilight often get too harshly judged as just being cliche stereotypes and people forget that it was twilight that set the cliche in the first place by kicking off (or at least popularizing) this particular trend of YA fiction.

    • @kitkat1321
      @kitkat1321 6 років тому

      Neil Briggs But Bella’s narrative was never entertaining. She whined too much. And yes, I’ve read the first book and didn’t hear anything about how everyone hated them until I finished it, by which point I’d already made up my mind it was awful.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 років тому

      Fair enough, just saying that was the "good" part of the books whether it particularly appealed to you or not. The story itself was never all that special, particularly the endless repeat of the same love triangle angst for 2+ books, and most of the characters were fairly bland though some of that was by design (for example edward is supposed to be the stoic silent type). I just think the movies get a little too much hate when they mostly accurately portrayed the books, it's just that it was never a story that would adapt particularly well to the visual medium.

I loved the action and suspense, I fell in love with the characters and immediately after started reading the books to get the rest of the story. I'm still upset about someone just having to go and break my heart by doing something that I was not prepared for at all but still found it incredible.

Like they knew that someone would try what Thomas did and allowed it to be that way for the trials. The timing was also suiting it. Just some minutes after Tom and Aris entered, The guy also came in while saying that the meet is unusual and sudden.

It's not easy being the one in the group holding the MASSIVELY unpopular opinion, but she stuck to her belief that in the end she was doing the right thing, and I can respect that.

It's really not credited enough and it always gets to me. The focus wasn't even on him. While everyone was listening to Thomas throughout all of those scenes, you could tell aris was in complete shock. If you read the fever code, it just makes this moment even better because you know more about aris and sympathize with him even more. Jacob lofland is amazing at acting without words and it really shows here.

    One thing that I feel like pointing out at (roughly) 8:24 that was so subtle but so well done in my opinion: shortly after they hear the gunshot, Thomas's hand moves to his abdomen where the gun was being pointed, and Minho looks at the same place, as if visually confirming that Thomas wasn't shot. I'm fairly certain Frypan is also checking.
    Especially well done as Chuck was also shot, but nobody knew for several seconds until he actually spoke up, and even then he didn't appear to be in noticeable pain (not even when he was initially shot). Trauma at it's finest

    The day this video was uploaded, The Death Cure was screening in theaters and I watched it on the first day. In my opinion, it’s the best movie of the trilogy. No matter how many dozens of times I rewatch each movie, I can never get over them. The Maze Runner had always been my favorite series since I watched it in 2014 with no clue what it was. Sure, I did end up forgetting the series after a month and remembered about it when The Scorch Trials came out in 2015, but it’s a series a true dedicated fan could never forget. The series is filled with action and plot twists, and you never know what’s going to happen. When you least expect it, your most loved character bids goodbye, and all you can do is stare at the words/screen with tears trickling down because you had grown so used to them. It’s a series that many should love, and a series we can’t forget. At least in my point of view.

    My biggest problem with this movie is that the scorch was literally supposed to be a trial, hence the name. It was phase two of WICKED’s experiments, and so it kind of changed everything. They were all told they had the flare, and that had to cross the scorch in order to get the ‘cure’, with WICKED monitoring their brain patterns all the while. I just wish that hadn’t changed.

Mercenaries would indicate they are kind of like contractors, working job to job and using their own equipment. WCKD probably uses their own soldiers that they can specifically train for their special missions (and brainwash), as well train with their tech, which is probably the best in the world.

That being said I saw the last movie twice and I cried both times (People that have read the book know what happens that Im talking about...) They've actually done a really good job of transiting from book to movie, theyre pretty close to each other with some obvious yet unimportant differences. Usually thers always one guy going "The book was so much better than the movie."... Okay, its usually me, but for once I actually prefer the movies to the books and would definitely recommend seeing the third movie.
