Great video Ben! Love to see these more common animals get some love! Their all over my campus and I saw a few “wrestling” the other day 🤦🏻 keep up the great work!
If it was very gentle wrestling then I have heard that it is a type of courtship behavior. I’ve seen it once before, and it was the only time that any squirrel seemed oblivious to my presence within 50 feet. It’s always a blessing to witness uncommon animal behavior. Very cool.
They are pests to the extent they get into our attic, but they're very cute and impressive creatures. After unsuccessfully trying to kill some of them, I found a live trap that works very well (and you can pet them once they calm down) and is actually a lot easier than trying to kill them. Driving 3 miles seems to be sufficient distance so they won't come back. Our trap is labeled "squirellinator" and has never spent a day in our yard without catching a squirrel, but other live traps probably work just as well.
I'm glad the squirellinator is working so well, if nothing else the fact that they are capable of invading your home is a testament to their intelligence and athleticism.
1 or 2 of them scratch my door wanting there nuts in the morning, one of them jumps up and hangs on my door looking in, they're crazy, I call one of them wally walnut head, lol
ah yes, the majestic wood rat. the ones in big bear CA were special. they were the grandest of the forest caretakers. they were responsible for seeding the forest. and now the forest dies without them
Great video dude. They are very important to our ecological system in many ways that we might not even know. I believe that they do more to promote forest habitat than any other animal in the country. I believe that when they bury acorns, and other nuts/seeds it actually protects the ones they don’t eat from weather, bugs, and any other environmental conditions that can contribute to the perishing of tree and plant seeds. I guess you can call them nature’s farmers. VERY SMART critters too.
Thanks Cassie! They are definitely incredibly important for our forests, they just happen to also be great generalists and therefore can easily populate areas where natural predators are not present.
@@TheWildReportOfficial Could you try to make a video about the Flying Squirrel? One used to to live in the BIG Willow Oaks in our yard in Durham when I was a kid. Only saw him about four different nights, but you don’t forget that.
@@TheWildReportOfficial I KNOW. I understand that could take some time to research, but if it is something that you could do, I know that you would do it well.
Eastern grey squirrels here in the uk chew out the nut radical that forms the tap root so that the nut doesn't germinate as this would spoil the kernel as a food source. They also have an incredible sense of smell to help locate nuts they have buried and other squirrels have stashed, it also helps then locate food source over great distances.
I love squirrels and I don't really get why so many people consider them pests. Why get upset when they eat seeds from your bird feeder? It's neat to watch them, so I don't see why people can't just be cool with squirrels and birds alike eating the seeds. I think they're pretty fascinating clever little tree planters.
I was raised to think they were pest but now that i have rescued/raised 4 of them i think the are awesome. Extremely destructive but we love them so much.
It can definitely imagine it being near-impossible to think about them as a pest after raising four of them. It's not their fault they are overpopulated in urban areas, we're the ones who killed their predators.
We used to keep a bag of bird seed in our garage, but squirrels kept getting into it. So my husband stored a bag of bird seed in a dog crate on our deck. It was the kind for transporting a dog and made of hard plastic. Squirrel(s) gnawed the corner off to get to the bird seed. Then we put the bird seed in an old cooler and they are working on that, too. Persistent little buggers.
People have no idea how awesome squirrels are. Once they trust you enough to take food from your hand, they can melt your heart. ❤️😊🐿
