    Narrator was the same guy who did all the old military films the scared the hell out of us as kids. I am going to have to watch this a few times.....I don't know where you found this but it is a true classic....its gear head thing.

      VintageReceivers it was part of the digital archives at the technical college I received my driver training at. I knew the value of these videos, so before I graduated I downloaded them all onto a thumb drive and uploaded them to UA-cam for all to see

    This video makes it seem so complicated! This transmission is very easy to operate.

    I'm glad the range selector and splitter are set up ergonomically now.

    I love how he told us to wait to shift until the engine is at full governed RPM's, lol. Classic video! I love it!

    Its amazing how complicated this all seems in video form.

    I love the fact that they use a cabover as a visual repersantation :D

      In most European, Scandanavian and African nations the cabover is still more common.

    13sp is basically the same as a 9 but you can split the high range gears.
    You can actually get 14 gears out of them. Instead of using 4th, go into crawl gear in high range. Then you can split it. 18sp is the same as a 13 but you can split the low range too.

      The "cheater gear" 😂. The video was saying that that can cause premature wear, but I never heard of it hurting anything. Does it not matter on current models?

      @@TheCgOrion Why would you use the cheater gear? To make downshifting from 5 easier?

    • @TheCgOrion

      @@johncalvo1743 Very true. It's been a long time since I drove a 13 or 18, since my current truck is a 10 speed layout, but you're right.
      Side note: I just got back from a coast to coast (with a some extra) yesterday, and thank God I'm home 😂. (9 days team driving)

      @@TheCgOrion Nice! How long have you been driving? Do you prefer team driving?

    • @TheCgOrion
      @TheCgOrion 2 роки тому

      @@johncalvo1743 It seems like a lifetime, but in reality it's only been a couple years. When it's a couple hundred thousand miles a year, it seems like a long time 😂. I learned and started on a 13 speed (an older Western Star logging truck). Once I bought my own truck, it was a 10 speed. I think I do prefer team driving, but I'm also driving with my brother or my nieces boyfriend, so it helps that we know each other well. The downside is that I have trouble sleeping when the truck is stopped, which happens sometimes when we're early, and we have to wait to drop a load.

  • @Bear1097
    @Bear1097 12 років тому +1

    @yamahonkawazuki Ya, but I only drive a 1/2 ton truck so I dont use my gears to slow me down, I usually just coast to a stop, thats when I want to go into first, and while I have the clutch in, I put it into third or forth quick so its easier to go into first.

  • @yamahonkawazuki
    @yamahonkawazuki 12 років тому +1

    @nonamejoe56 thats normal. you never want to hit first, from a high gear like that. really from second only into first. depending on speed mainly

  • @rond361
    @rond361 13 років тому

    @magayisa333 You can't downshift without using the hi/low splitter but you don't move the splitter to low range until you are ready to shift from 5th to 4th or 6th to 4th if you are dropping doubles. Dropping doubles is downshifting two gears in one shift you only use the even # gears. If you are in 8OD you need to shift to 8D by moving the D/OD selector to Direct, let off the accelerator depress the clutch you should now be in 8D now you can downshift without using the D/OD selector.

  • @JerryWick

    You have it almost nailed on the head, however
    Before you move the stick from 8th to one such as seven, you have to pre-select with the splitter (move it to low range) BEFORE you clutch in and put it into neutral and catch the next lower gear.
    Throttle speed when doing a splitter downshift is the same as any non-splitter shift

      @martin1234512345 2 роки тому +1

      Only on rtlo transmissions. This is referring to rto transmissions which are different. Do NOT preselect on an rto. Just like he said, move the stick, THEN split. Low inertia transmissions were invented for this reason. To make preselecting possible.

    @nonamejoe56 f150 is synchronised. shouldnt have to double clutch at all, unless, synchros are going out. if youre at a stop, and cant get into 1st, clutch in, push lever into first position, and SLOWLY release clutch pedal, until it goes into first.

      Nope, for the past 30 years all we have is Eatons and a couple other brands that just made Eaton clones that are long gone too now. Eatons are great though, so we don't complain.

  • @Bear1097

    Okay, thats what double clutching is, in my little F150, when I shift into neutral, let out the clutch, then push it in again, it wont let me go into first, I have to shift into 3rd or 4th then to 1st then let out the clutch, I was told if I double clutch, I could go dirrectly into first. Do you think that would work, I personally don't think so

  • @Bear1097
    @Bear1097 13 років тому

    @yamahonkawazuki Ya, I have tried that, doesn't work. If I'm going any higher than 1st gear and try and downshift, I cant get in for 5 seconds. I just throw it in 3rd or 4th then it goes in first easy. The odd time is hesitant to go into 2nd and reverse. It has not got worse or better

  • @JerryWick

    Sounds to me like you are having problems with your selector mechanism/shifter forks/etc. Your pickup should have a syncromesh transmission, which does not require you double clutch, i suggest you have it checked out.
