The funny part is Alberto had him pegged, but the thing people with that power never seem to understand is you never fully push someone when you have their weakness because they might lash out like they have nothing to lose (even if you think they do). Penguin laughing is that kind of hilarity of "that just happened", after setting up all these sweet talks because this guy was gonna be your boss, he's lying dead on the couch just like that because of you pulling the trigger. Penguin telling the story of Rex who was a very respected gangster who helped out in the community and got everyone to love him and remember him. When he died, they gave him a parade as an honor. @@masterzombie161 the question will be in the series, is everyone going to love the Penguin or fear him. Lets see what the Penguin will become because he has a long way to go to reach the top.
@@MrSyckpuppi true, Alberto never understood the people. Penguin mustn't lose sight what kind of gangster he wants to be. Lets see how he achieves his goals at the end.
This tells you a lot about Oz. He's romantic, sentimental, and whilst he's circumspect in isolation, he's can also be decisive and perhaps a little impulsive when his boundaries are infringed upon. If you're a writer, that is the recipe for a compelling anti-hero.
Penguin isn’t an anti hero in the show, he’s a villain but a slightly sympathetic one. He wants power and respect to live up to his mothers dreams for him but he’s not above letting many innocents die to get what he wants, even non mafia members like that boy while he was being tortured by Sophia in the first episode
Robert Mckee defines dimension as a combination of opposites. The Penguin fits that with a ruthless, selfish persona combined with a caring, chartiable, sentimental persona. Giving one power slowly over the other or even just instantly like we saw here turns a scene. This show is gunna go down as an instant classic.
This is one to one with the Penguin's personality. He's a nice enough dude until you insult him in any way at all. Hell even if he THINKS you insulted him you're done.
@@kingofhits6164 Agreed. I don't see what the rest of the thread is talking about but The Batman was fairly standard PG-13 in terms of gore. Not that I was disappointed or anything but I just expected more, like the carpet tool Riddler used having more blood on it when it's thrown to the camera.
@@sauldownbadman876And that's An achievement on it's own. The movie was absolutely fantastic, but somehow this show manages to be better. Matt Reeves is cooking up one hell of a universe I can tell you that much
now THIS is how you open a show. after Oswald's realization of what he's done was an impulse and it's gonna get him in a shitload of trouble, you can just see it on his face and in his eyes before the perfectly cut "aw fuck!". few minutes of screen time and already established the premise of the show without saying it straight to our faces. that's how a good quality TV is done
What I love is that we see oz incorporate his monologue to his actions. He does give and give as well as take, but it’s enough to get people to be on his side and crush his enemies.
The pilot was great in that way in that it effectively presented characterization for almost each of the major cast member imo. We hear Oz tell this tale of this old mobster he looked up to for how he gave back to the community & then we immediately after see how he truly inspired by when he takes a street kid under his wing.
Alberto was never going to last the way he talked about what his father did made it seem like he was going to do things differently. And after Oz tells the story he doesn’t get the point about respect because he’s never had to earn it so he died like he lived a petty person with petty power.
It's a great scene because Alberto isn't an idiot, he listens to and understands what Penguin is saying, he just makes a slight misjudgement to penquins character.
In a manner of speaking he's talking about the power of being respected, but then Al proceeds behave disrespectfully and loses that power. He was never going to go far if all he wants is enemies.
Alberto talking ambition and changing the game, only for Oz to fill him with lead. It’s like if the Falcones wanna go big, Oz is going bigger and taking them out. What a powerful statement and one hell of a way to set the stage for this show.
As someone who has watched Scorsese movies, I was really surprised at this show. This was a genius interpretation of the Penguin. Collin Ferrell literally is brilliant in this. I can’t wait to watch the rest.
Honestly, Im impressed how Alberto saw right through the moral anecdote to Ozwald's projection of himself and what he wanted. This was a bit of a manipulation and a projection by Oz here. Not just good old wholesome advice. Alberto was foolish enough to underestimate Oz by calling him out on it. While Sofia or Carmine would have kept their cool and tightened the leash on Oz. Shows how dangerous subordinates can be toward weak leadership. Awesome show❤
It’s wild how even with all of the prosthetics in place you can still read the emotions on display. Like he’s actually trying to reassure his new boss, give him a bit of advise, and open up to him only to get laughed at
Wow, this was a great scene. What a fantastic way to introduce the Penguin as a person. He is a ruthless mobster for sure, but this one moment shows a humane side to him. There is also a nice visual demonstration of his weakness: rage at being mocked. Great acting here.
Alberto didn't let himself be carried away and believed that he couldn't subdue someone as fearsome as Oz, the penguin. He has been very impulsive and no one dares to make fun of him. And that wasn't what Alberto thought. And a big mistake!!! Collin farrel bravo.👏
At the end of the day, I feel like all Oz wants is to be loved and appreciated by people. He doesn’t want anyone to be afraid him with they see him in the street. Like he said, all he wants is “to be remembered like that.” Alberto was right, Oz was talking about himself. But instead of taking the advice or the story that Oz was giving him he laughed at him. Couldn’t help but feel sorry for Oz. I feel like why Oz is where he is and does what he does because all his life people never took him seriously, laughed at him, called him a low-life. All that. And that’s what led to him to do these harsh things like kill and be involved in criminal activity. We’ve seen a hint of goodness inside Oz already when (in the deleted scene) of Batman when he offers Selina some money but she refuses. There goodness in him, but doesn’t know how to show it appropriately. Because Oz is insecure and doesn’t know how to control his emotions, he reacts violently. i.e Alberto.
I think you’re really on the money dude, I really am liking how they’re taking this new version of Penguin, wish they stuck with the name Cobblepot though and just kept his nickname as ‘Oz Cobb’ or something

Sofia scolded him in that car and he ratted on her which got her confined in Arkham. Alberto laughted in his face and got filled with lead. And he used to be quite a loyal servant too. If they simply treated their lessers with respect their criminal empire wouldn't be... well, destroyed. The exact thing Oswald tried to tell Alberto in this scene - fucking treat folks better, it will do you good.

Cutting to title-card mid sentence has been more of a trendy thing these days but I never would have expected to see it in this show, yet the way they do it with the discordant music is what sets it apart because usually it's an upbeat pop song or silence. This was different and refreshing. The episode would go on to have those pop song moments for levity, but keeping the unsettling ambient music here was a nice touch to let us know the overall theme of the show is going to be dark. And of course the acting was great
Just a theory but I would absolutely love to see Vic(the kid being mentored by Oz) become Black Mask in some way shape or form by the end of all this. Imagine how awesome it would be if the little street kid Penguin takes under his wing becomes something even worse than he ever was

That would sound badass as a Penguin quote
The funny part is Alberto had him pegged, but the thing people with that power never seem to understand is you never fully push someone when you have their weakness because they might lash out like they have nothing to lose (even if you think they do).
Penguin laughing is that kind of hilarity of "that just happened", after setting up all these sweet talks because this guy was gonna be your boss, he's lying dead on the couch just like that because of you pulling the trigger. Gives him a very quick sense of power, then rationale kicks in and he realizes the snowball of a problem he just did.
Thank you for explaining that because it wasn't obvious at all what was going on in the scene. But I feel like I can sleep better now, know that this is what's happened.

@@Paul-ie1xp true. he understood that it was what penguin wanted but was obviously to stupid to realize that it meant he’d be looking for any opportunity to seize power… and it REALLY meant that mouthing off to him while alone was probably a bad idea
A clever leader instead of Alberto would have lied and empathized with what Oz was talking about. Why? Because you don't let a violent criminal know you know his weakness.
He’s like a combination of Tony Soprano and Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. really good stuff.

I definitely think the kid thought he figured something out about the old gangster. Unfortunately, most young people have absolutely no clue about the convoluted motivations that develop with age. What I saw was an old timer quickly realizing his boss was an addicted idiot who couldn't take hints. Bad combo for business. Better to put him down there. Which he was going to do initially, but I guess he figured 'what the hell... I'll give kid a shot.' And then he had to.
Oz wasn’t hiding it though. He always slips with his intentions but he always finds a way to win. Thats what makes him a fantastic villain. Everyone knows what he wants and he’ll not stop until it’s his
@@baconmemories5416 Literally everyone calls him out for what he is but he gets them anyway. Sal, Nadia, Sofia, Alberto, etc.
I think this will symbolize more than Penguin's rise. It symbolizes the passing of the old type of criminals and the rise of the "super" villains .
That's a really good point, Maronie is already gone when we are dropped into this world and now Falcone has gone, I think this show is going to be all about the transition from generic mobsters to comic book super villains, thank goodness for this version of Batman existing, its currently the only thing Warner are doing with DC that is worth watching.
That was actually a big plot in “The Long Halloween”. So your theory may end being correct.
I think The Batman already paved the way to the rise of "the freaks" like Riddler. I feel this series may specifically set up "gimmick" crime lords like Black Mask, Scarface, & Penguin who are in between the old mobsters & new age freaks.
@@imirmacklin7602 Given The Batman was inspired by The Long Halloween & Batman near the end says it'll get worse before it gets better, I always thought that movie symbolized the rise of supervillains.

@themadtitan7603 it's a precursor to that. Its basically about the Gotham mobs final days so actaul crazy will show up. While the mobs have one blood final stand for power. It makes sense batman wouldn't be in it because he's occupied with a city other problems
Penguin telling the story of Rex who was a very respected gangster who helped out in the community and got everyone to love him and remember him. When he died, they gave him a parade as an honor. Rex died as a respected man with power.
Sadly Alberto didn't get the point of the story. Alberto just proven that he wasn't going to last as the boss. Alberto's fatal mistake was laughing at Penguin.
In the end Rex died with no regrets and everyone loved him, as opposed to Falcone and Maroni they live in regret because everyone feared them.

Collin Farrell finally made Penguin top tier
Wow it's almost like that's what was said in the video!!!!
This tells you a lot about Oz. He's romantic, sentimental, and whilst he's circumspect in isolation, he's can also be decisive and perhaps a little impulsive when his boundaries are infringed upon. If you're a writer, that is the recipe for a compelling anti-hero.
How is this the only good comment on this video
Penguin isn’t an anti hero in the show, he’s a villain but a slightly sympathetic one. He wants power and respect to live up to his mothers dreams for him but he’s not above letting many innocents die to get what he wants, even non mafia members like that boy while he was being tortured by Sophia in the first episode
Anti-hero? Hes a straight up villain lol
Deff not anti hero just a villian and sociopath with soft side and anger issues
This is one to one with the Penguin's personality. He's a nice enough dude until you insult him in any way at all. Hell even if he THINKS you insulted him you're done.
Definitely. Episode 3 showed more of that.. the guy at the mushroom warehouse almost got popped cause Penguin thought he insulted him lol
Yep exactly what I was thinking. His shortsighted temper is his defining character trait in pretty much any batman media he's in.

The pilot was great in that way in that it effectively presented characterization for almost each of the major cast member imo. Awesome show❤
I am absolutely loving this era of Batman et al. The Penguin is the first show I've been excited for in a long, long time.
It’s wild how even with all of the prosthetics in place you can still read the emotions on display. Like he’s actually trying to reassure his new boss, give him a bit of advise, and open up to him only to get laughed at

Great acting here.
God i love how they just let him sit there too afterwards. You actually see Oz thinking. Love this show.
Yea so true!
Alberto didn't let himself be carried away and believed that he couldn't subdue someone as fearsome as Oz, the penguin. He has been very impulsive and no one dares to make fun of him. And that wasn't what Alberto thought. And a big mistake!!! Collin farrel bravo.👏
Alberto forgot his daddy ain't around to protect him and/or admonish him for inappropriate behavior in the wrong place at the wrong time.
At around 4.15 penguin realises he has to clean this mess up all by himself
It’s alright Vic is literally outside trying to steal Oz’s wheels as this is going down
With the help of victor
Kept forgetting Colin Farrel was in the scene...
At the end of the day, I feel like all Oz wants is to be loved and appreciated by people. He doesn’t want anyone to be afraid him with they see him in the street. Like he said, all he wants is “to be remembered like that.”
Alberto was right, Oz was talking about himself.
