  • Kyle is in Germany with ‪@KrisRifa‬ and his Audi e-tron GT. This car is built on the same platform as Taycan and therefore has the same 93.4kWh (gross) battery pack. In this video Kyle analyzes the DCFC curve of the GT and shows how it’s really the benchmark of production EVs today.

    Talk about absolutely insanity!! This thing charges like almost nothing else. Should we stage a charging race between this and the E-GMP cars? I think it will be close.       @@Fuzzbear Chalk it up to Europe's more robust DC fast charging network. EA, which is pretty much the only player in the 350kw charger range for the US, have been notoriously buggy in every youtube test I've seen, including Kyle's. The 300+kw chargers in Euro videos seem much more consistent.

      @@Fuzzbear Looks like some E.A chargers are not fully aware of 800V batteries thus charged at 1/2 the max power allowed by the car. These types of problems will iron out over time.

      @@BillB33525 Power demand is controlled by the car. That's why they work with everything from 50kW to 270kW vehicles.

      @@DelPhonic1 kinda my point, I own two Tesla’s (model Y performance and model 3 long range) and as much as I like this car I am not ready to use these off brand chargers until they are caught up with Tesla which will take a few years yet I think.

    Great explanation of the charging curve. So many people new to EVs are just starting to tune in to the idea of owning their first EV. They need to understand you don't DC charge for a "fill up."

    Great results. Make me wonder though what we will see a few years down the line. Are they reformulating the equivalent of the “lifetime fluids” promise where things are designed to last just until the warranty ends? I’d lease it, have that great recharge experience, then evaluate the buyout as time goes on.

    Really impressive charging curve and it does appear to have hit some thermal limits in the 80s. If you have time, a 50-100% test would be great.

      tesla batteries go down on charge about 6% in 37k miles so quite a lot. We gonna see about these vag products I suppose.

      @@hagestad average tesla is 10% every 200,000 miles,
      the first couple percentage goes down very fast but slows down dramatically by 95% original capacity.

      @brotinger_1 its actually worse from 90-100%, the cathode expands the most at this stage and is very chemically reactive since technically 80% charge is full and 100% is overcharge, a 100% charge battery will catch fire much more easily than a 10% charged battery, but if you go below 0% charge you can cause major damage very quickly.

      332km ON A FULL CHARGE 1100 CYCLES TO 80% SOH = 332X1100= 365,200kms TRAVELLED. YOU WOULD NEVER FAST CHARGE EVERY TIME

    Do you guys have any information on how to precondition the car?
    After a 20 minute drive and 25% I barely get 88kW, only once have I maxed a 225kW charger.

    Question for you: I use my car (2024 eTron GT Premium Plus Performance) primarily for daily driving so I really don’t need to charge it up above 80% ever. Should I charge it to 100% every now and then to use the whole battery and drain it all the way down as well or just go to 80% twice a week like I usually do? My daily commute requires me to charge to 80% twice a week, usually Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday (to be ready for the work week). I want to maintain my batteries as long as I can.

    I would just add that there is a realistic use case for 0-100 % charging. Here in Europe as a lot of people live in flats with no access to overnight charging, you would charge it like a gas car - go, fill it up, use it until almost empty, repeat.

    I don't think there are any technical differences between the taycan and the e-tron gt in terms of battery and management. Small parameter changes in temperature or charging station can already make a difference in charging behavior.

    still feel the charging curve of the etron55 is really all you need. I just wish that drivetrain would be used in several other more efficient models. The Q4 for instance, is a missed opportunity.

      Time will tell, but theoretically, DC fast charging should be significantly less stressful to the battery in these 800v systems than even a lower charging rate is in a 400v system.

      @@laloajuria4678 Yes, I should have been clearer, DC fast charging in an 800v system is less stressful to the battery than a lower rate of DC fast charging in a 400v system (ie 200-250kw in 800v is easier on the battery than 100-150kw in a 400v), but in either system AC is always the easiest on the battery.

      @@MrAlfable No, that is not correct. There is no less stress on the battery in an 800 volt system. Arranging the batteries with twice as many cells in series and half as many in parallel results in half the current in the cable connected to the car, but the current in each battery cell is the same in either arrangement.

    I've been charging RC lipo packs like this for 6 years now.
    Fact is I can do 90% in 15 minutes if I'm not worried much about degradation.
    These smart charging algorithms are way better for longevity though. Great to see it's here.

    The Ionic 5 seems to have a hard time with temperature sensitivity when it comes to the rapid charging that it can do according to Bjørn Nyland's Hyundai Ionic 5 1000 km challenge through Sweden.

    My biggest Taycan issue now is that ID.4s and MachEs take the 350kW EA units leaving only the 150kW for me. I think of it as a kindness to my battery though. I did a lot of fast charging when I first got the car.

      Amen, Ron. I've had that happen 2 of the last 3 times I rolled into a station w/ 350 kW chargers. The good news is that the Taycan charges brilliantly on a 150 kW charger holding really high rates deep into the pack. The bad news is having to learn that while parked next to a functional 350 kW charger.

    Now they need to get the charging reliability so that it works when you plug in the car the first time. Porsche Taycan had to try two or three chargers per station sometimes when they plugged in.

      Etron GT went 1085 km yesterday, no charging problems except one retry.
      Total time: 10:35 h with two very slow roadworks and one accident which lead to a complete standstill.

      @@lousogoodx This was a challenge between an e-tron GT loaner driven by Michael Schmitt and a follower's Model 3 LR. There were 6 charges (to optimize the charging window), exclusively at Ionity 350 kW and EnBW 300 kW stalls. First charge took place after 250 km. Target speed was 110 mph or 180 km/h where possible.
      Consumption around 30 kWh/100 km.

    Kyle, this test shows that the Audi e-tron GT only has a range of 206 miles, that's really low. Everyone does not like to charge as frequently as you do. During the day I only want to stop once to charge on a trip during breakfast and once during lunch at most. I don't want to have to worry about finding a charging station every 175 miles and have to stop and charge 3 or 4 times during the daytime for a 750 mile in a day trip. I need a range of around 300 miles, so I only have to charge at most 2 times during the daytime and once at night at a hotel's level 2 charger while sleeping.
    Here is the daily charging routine I like for a 2 or 3 day road trip:
    Charge No. 1 (at night) - Depart at 4:30AM after Charging at night with a level 2 charger at a hotel or at home to 100% with 300 miles or range and travel about 250 miles in about 3.75 hours which includes one quick bathroom break at a roadside rest stop.
    Charge No. 2 - Charge from 8:15AM to 9:15AM during breakfast to 95% to 100% and leave with a range of around 300 miles and travel about 250 miles in about 3.75 hours which includes one quick bathroom break at any roadside rest stop.
    Charge No. 3 - Charge from 1:00PM to 2:00PM during lunch to 95% to 100% and leave with a range of around 300 miles and travel another 250 miles in about 3.75 hours which includes one bathroom break and arrive at the hotel around 5:45PM for dinner and a relaxing evening and go to bed around 9:00PM so we can get up around 4:30AM the next morning.
    Total distance per day would be around 750 miles which is our max.
    That's the way I like to do road trips in an EV.

      @@Jeff-wb3hh It was only 49 mph average with 4.2 mi/kWh or 238 Wh/mile tested by asphalt. Art channel.
      As general rule of thumb I assume for every 6 mph or 10 km/h faster speed a 10 % higher consumption.

      That's why comparing percentages of SOC is pointless. You should compared real world range added per charge time.

      No way. I’ve fast charged an etron like 10 times, never seen it charge ANYWHERE near as fast in the real world. More like 2 hours 10-100%. Also when doing this in even remotely hot weather (above 80F), etron doesn’t give you cabin AC because it prioritizes battery cooling. Etron GT is a significant improvement with the Taycan 800V system but their gen1 400V system sucks. Not competitive.

    It did set turtle mode at 15:34 into the charge, though it claimed motor overheat which doesn't make sense... is there a different message for battery overheat and why wouldn't it say that one instead in this condition?

    The Taycan also had terrible battery degradation when charging at high speeds. Porsche warranty covers 160km or 8 years. They also assume 3 years /60k km / 80% min net capacity is normal as per their manual.
    Post 2018 Tesla batteries experienced 10% degradation after 250k km. Even their warranty for a model S, covers 8 years or 240k km, with a 70% min net capacity.

      And they made sure they did not run into warranty claims by nerfing the charge speed severely, so the car becomes really crippled for the owner without having a choice. 😬

      Data source for the terrible degradation? I'm a Taycan owner and active on the forums, and nobody has been complaining of abnormal degradation. My own experience is that my degradation is unmeasurable after over a year and nearly 13k miles, with LOTS of DCFC in the mix. It's too early to know for sure, but the early owner experience isn't suggesting 'terrible battery degradation' at all.

    The Porsche taycan also had a monster charging curve but then Porsche realized after a year that it was hurting the battery and recommended customers charge slower.

      its pretty obvious this would happen when you use stack pouch cells and insulate them for winter range, but the Porsche engineers really wanted to impress people in the short term, they originally said the taycan would do 350kw in future software updates back in 2019...

      @@miguellopez3392 As a Taycan owner, I can tell you that Porsche never promised a software update to 350 kW. I saw some writers and UA-camrs speculate about such a thing, but Porsche has promised 270 kW charging, and that's what the car delivers. The SW update in early 2021 did add an option to limit max charge speed, but it is not on by default, so I don't believe that Porsche is concerned about abnormal degradation due to DC fast charging.

      the Porsche has poor cooling, even a model 3 has better cooling and could beat it in a long enough race, this is what happens when you cool a battery from only 1 side and then insulate it.

    I think that this charge speed will not help the battery live a long life, but still impressive. (Tesla has there special weird charging ramp speed for a reason) :P

    The area under the curve vs peak is a FALSE DICHOTOMY. It’s all about charging speed in mph across SOC.

      This will change with climate, speed, rain...while the kW is comparable and a metric for charging tech lead of the 800 V systems.

      @@rosalyschijf2157 It is 819 (e-tron gt) vs 452 km/h (Model Y LR mic) 10-75% charge speed per Bjorn Nyland's test, going about 75 mph or 120 km/h.
      Those new Teslas only have a chance if you stop charging early and have ample v3 SC supply.

    It charges up to 80% in 21 minutes, very impressive!
    But then I remembered something: it's an inefficient energy hog...
    According to Bjorns range test in Noway at 120kmh (75mph) the 100% range is 235 miles (from its huge 93kwh battery), so 80% is 188 miles.
    So it adds 188 miles of range in 21 minutes or 8.9 miles per minute (nice!).
    I couldn't find numbers for the latest Model S which is a better price and vehicle type comparison (and I suspect would make the numbers even worse for the Audi actually due to the S's efficiency and range) but looking at your Model Y LR charge curve which I assume is the same as the 3 LR and Bjorns range test for the Model 3 LR:
    100% range at 75mph on the 3 is 262 miles (from its smaller 82kwh battery) , so 80% is 209 miles.
    Charging to 80% on it takes 31 minutes so it works out to 6.7 miles per minute.
    So the Audi, curve is adding real world range a third faster than the Tesla 3 (yes I know their peak speeds are closer).
    That *should* make the E-Tron GT the fastest on a road trip but in reality Bjorns 1000km (620 miles) test took 9hr 35mins in the Audi and 9hr 20mins in the Model 3 LR... Close enough to not matter but from specs and curve tests the Audi should have won, so I suspect needing to stop more frequently to charge due to less real worlds range and that your charging curves may be an example of the best of the best, what a car *can* do if the stars are aligned but the reality of what we will experience on a real world trip is still quite different is what keeps it behind, e.g. this video were the Audi just got creamed so not even close like it was in Bjorns test:

      The Audi could not meet optimized charging stops at first due to the weather, it had 21" wheels and we came to the conclusion the Tesla time was ultimately better, because it drives faster at the same indicated speed (uses gps reference maybe)! This is a noticable difference within 1000 km.

It took 1 hour to put 206 miles of range on a new ev... you think it takes that long for any modern Tesla? See my 1st sentence....

    17 minutes to go from 20% to 80%? With a 300 kW charger? That is adding, according to your driving style, 159 km of range in 17 min. That is simply not enough. For that price range of a car. And you cannot find a 300 kW charger at every corner. I love EVs, they are the future, but buying suc a car at this price and this state of infrastructre is throwing you money away.

      We have lots of 300 kW chargers now, if you drive it just to 20 % and complain about lack of range you are doing something wrong. You should land in the 5-10 % window, navigation system is good enough you don't have to have range anxiety.

      According to the stats on the Audi menu, the 5 - 10% window is 17 - 30 km of range. And no, there is no abundance of 300 kW chargers lying around (in Germany), 150 kW - yes, 300 kW - no. Audi claims 499 km of range, but if you drive it like would normally do then it is around 350 km. In 5 - 10 years, this will be a completely different scenario. Now, buying such a car, its like burning 100.000,00 €. It is an expensive toy. That will be totally obsolete in 5 years.

      check out his Plaid video. Here is what I found with my Plaid: So after 20 minutes of charging this car is at 78% SOC with a estimate range of 259km or 161 miles. The Plaid after 20 minutes of charging at 61% SOC and according to my Plaid with 19" wheel it has an estimated range of 240 miles. At 30 minutes E-tron GT 87% SOC estimate range of 291km or 191 miles vs the Plaid at 77% SOC and again according to my Plaid it should go 308 miles. I am really trying to understand how this car is better. So far my efficiency is at 290 Wh/mile after 732 miles with two trips to the 1/8 dragstrip with 4 passes and one of them a 6.03 @ 121mph lol.

      @@juanmedinar20 Problem is, in order to get maximum charging speed on Plaid you need to discharge it very low. Now everyone average consumer will be doing it. Majority of people do not discharge below 10-20% probably.

    Do i well understand ? The Audi has gained 332 km in about 1h and that’s a crazy curve of charge? How much km will a EQS or a MS gain in 1h ? For me it’s not the pourcentage of charge but the range gained that is important...

    It's a shame it consumes 40% more energy than competition (Tesla). That curve would be even greater if the energy consumption was comparable. Now, it's just slightly better (or not at all if you are using the newest stuff from Tesla) miles added/hour despite the great curve.

    % charge is a bit of BS, what is a superior real world standardised test is
    1 time to charge 100miles from a pack charge of 10kWh (or pre-determined real world safe low state)
    2 add a variable 0-15mins for all brands/charging that requires unnecessary navigation to chargers beyond 3-mins detour to route charging
    3 add a variable for how reliable a charging network, chargers and billing ACTUALLY is.
    That way, you'll find a real world reality as to why Tesla and Supercharging network is way, way, way better and overall faster and reliable, wherever the network is offered.

      In Germany most SC are v2 with 150 kW max. and some distance from the Autobahn so it is the other way around and Teslas have to charge at 300+ kW HPC if they want to travel quickly.

      Rather than %, we should have a standardised USEFUL measure, not something, as a parallel Tesla Plaid 0-60 in 2.05s, which is, for the most part, useless.

    We have to stop talking about percentages. it's literally pointless as it normalizes longer range cars to lower range ones. I can charge a 2 mile battery to 100% in 19 seconds, so pointless metric.
    This car just took an hour to get 206 miles and we are supposed to be impressed by a charging curve? Not remotely

      Tesla fan boy, not everyone cares about ultimate range, some of us want to drive a stylish car with a beautiful interior, not a sterile car with an economy car interior and middling build quality. I charge my E Niro every other night at home or at work so I don’t care about 400 mile range. 300 miles is the number.
