I see many serves on the social side of pickleball play. Many in my opinion seem like illegal serves based on USA pickleball 2023 rules. Perhaps an explanation on legal verses ilegal serves would be great! Love the video, thanks!
Great video Jordon. I've also found that from the odd side a high lob with a little spin can confuse the returner. The ball slowly moves to their left, but also will give a little kick when it lands. The returner may be slowly moving to get around to their forehand but ends up getting jammed from the kick. Also, I have had to train myself to step back after the serve. You demonstrated that you step forward into the court after the serve. A deep return will cause you to back up. So, I say to myself, "Serve and step back" so I don't get caught backing up. (Another up mantra is "Return and run" up to the NVZ.)
This would be a great video. Especially the corner serves. She was really struggling to get to those serves, and I've been there too. Some of them were bouncing just a few inches off the ground, more than ten feet away from where you're normally told to stand. I'd love to see what you're reacting to and how you stay ready to receive those corner serves.
Should the return for a topspin serve be the same as for a topin serve, with the hit from low to high at the contact point? Should the return for a slice serve be a slice?
Fascinating! Only discovered pickleball today! I love that there appears to be more effective use of spin here than in tennis, more like table tennis. Very exciting, want to try!
I can speak first hand about the first 2 serves in a recent lesson with Jordan that changed the way I serve, the topspin on my serves has increased and with better accuracy. Great video Jordan
I am a former spin (chainsaw and later hand spin, although no longer due to rule changes) server. Now my go to serve is a hard hit side spin serve deep, same as what you were doing with #5, but deeper and with more pace. It usually gets a kick of 1-2 feet right. Similar to your #1, but with side spin instead of topspin. So your #1 is what I mix in to switch things up. Do you ever do that deep side spin serve? It especially works well as a body jammer, where they either have to run around their backhand (and therefore are out of position for shot #4) or get jammed at the body. Also, it would help to discuss how the serves change up for lefties vs. righties. Great content, looking forward to more!
Excellent instructions, I use the drop serve and all of these work with the drop serve as well or perhaps even better because I can get a ton of spin on them.
exactly the video that i was looking for. I like the short topspin serve, as i am a lefty, and would want to use it on the left side of the court to the righties backhand.
Great tips and a very helpful video! My unsolicited feedback: switching camera angles in the middle of each serve is more challenging to watch and understand since it is not a complete, fluid motion. Enjoyable video, though. Thanks!
Glad to see I use all these throughout a game. It throws people off for sure. The slice serve is the most challenging for me as far as consistency getting it in.
that change of pace on the serves is also quite affective. Location, height and pace mix is good. That odd side slice also works well when directed left of the body (for a right handed player) that then spins further into the body and jams that forehand return.
Great video, I wonder why you don't recommend the deep slice serve #5 for the even side? I've found it to be very effective against right handed players as it starts at their body and ends up jamming them up on their backhand with no time to run around it to hit a forehand shot.
Agree, especially when low and deep. The corkscrew is my number 1 or 2. The high topspin is the one I use when playing lesser skilled players as it is easiest to return. I also like the lob serve, and sometimes take it a step further and make it a sky ball serve.
Hi Jordan, great instructional serve video. Not many comprehensive serving videos out there like yours. I'm a 4.0 player and play at Naples Florida Community Park. As you know, there are many players with different skills playing there, especially in season like now. I think it's so important to have multiple serves to get an advantage. I love the high topspin serve and I will practice and use it during my doubles matches. I've learned and applied so many skills from your videos, especially on the various stacking methods. I'm a southpaw and stacking is a great advantage for me. Happy New year and looking forward to more of your great videos. I use the Selkirk Invikta paddle it's a great paddle for spin, topspin, feel, and power.
I love these videos. They are so helpful. re. the short angle topspin serve, I've been called on it. You can at 7:58 that the top edge of Jordan's paddle blade is very, very close to being above his wrist at contact. Admittedly, we can't see the exact point of contact from behind the paddle.
I find also that a high lob serve to bangers is pretty effective because they have to generate all of their own power. I am not a banger so I consider the high lob serve to be a sucker serve and I just throw it back high and deep and get to the net. The short serve after hitting deep ones is a real killer if you are playing older or less mobile players. I have seen some players serve backhanded which has been pretty effective. Don't see it often plus the side spin throws people off and doesn't seem to bounce as high.
Really enjoyed this video, I got a chance to practice this today after playing. I have 20 balls, and in one session of serving all four courts, 20 balls each. I was just doing the top spin serve, moving it to all four corners of service court. I have also moved from the center of the court to the center of the service court. being left-handed, I set up facing to the left of the court parallel with the back line. what I realized is my body is hiding my paddle until It hits the ball!! I was amazed after just hitting 80 balls. This serve was working well to 80% of the time while still screwing around with changing the swing. I was just hitting the ball out of my hand before this. The cross Court to the close corner of the receivers Court is un returnable without over cooking it. we will see when I get it in a game?

I need a video about defending these serves! They are supper difficult. Most people don’t put a lot into their serves, but as a 3.5ish player I struggle against 4.0+ people with tricky serves.
One of my favorites is from the right side I love to hit the high top spin to the back hand if they are at the baseline and giving me some backhand area. People aren’t as good at hitting high cramped backhand shots so it’s useful
Love this video. I had an instructor tell me to always hit the return down the middle when stacking. I noticed you all were not doing that. Where should you hit the return? I just try to hit it to the others weakest side.
@@BrionesPickleball Thanks for the quick response. I will try that. Your’re one of my favorite coaches. You explain things so well. Keep up the good work.
When they ask on the courts how did i learn so fast and become such a better player. I tell them I watch your UA-cam channel. lol. Thanks Buddy.... keep them.coming .
Certain serves are easier to hit from certain spots and people will see you move and adjust before your serve to get a better angle. My personal favorite trick is to bounce the call so it gets away from me a little so I can step and grab the ball to move to a new position without arousing any suspicion.
Here's something I like to do as the receiver: as my opponent is getting ready to serve, most will look up to see where I'm standing to make their decision as to where they're going to hit their serve, I will sometimes set up my position a bit too far to the left or right on purpose so that they think I'm out of position. When they look back down at the ball to serve, I'll move back to where I should have been to begin with and one of two things usually happens: they see me move and in that micro-second it makes them second guess their serve and it messes them up a bit or if they didn't notice my movement and adjust their serve, I'm now ready for it since I've taken that one step back into the better receiving position. Of course, I don't do this often as it would get predictable, but every once in a while, say if they've gone on a run and gotten several points in a row. Thoughts?
Fantastic video! I am just starting Pickleball and I have a very specific question. I am an intermediate Ambidextrous tennis player with no backhand in that sport. However in Tennis, I can serve better righty than lefty. 1. Since I am new to pickleball, should I focus on the first four serves and try to get as many backhanded returns as possible using whatever hand makes sense? Or… 2. In tennis I have been working on serving right handed from the right side with spin to hit the corner… and left handed from the left side with that same strategy. That way I only have to learn one routine from each side. Perhaps that is a better strategy given limited practice time? Final point, in tennis, being ambidextrous makes sense as I have time to switch hands. Does it make sense to use both hands in pickleball?
Nothing wrong with practicing and using both, but you’re definitely going to want to develop your strong go-to serve on your “Best” and strongest side. That’s my suggestion!
Love your video and easy to understand. I do have a question. I rolled my wrist like a stop spin serve , my contact point is still below my waist. I have been playing pickleball for about 6 months and no one said anything to me that it is illegal but recently someone told me my serve is illegal. I am confused. Can you please confirm if this is true? 🙂
Nice video - one comment: most players below 4.0 have weaker backhands, you should also show the side spin serve on the deuce court, not just the ad-court
typically, I would only use Serve number four against a left-hander in the even court. A right-hander will go out and get the ball and he's already on his way in so that's like inviting him to the net. I would use the same type of serve against the right hander in the odd Court with the opposite spin.
Just found your channel. Is there anyway that you can explain how to put a spin on a ball when serving and how to keep the ball lower when serving. Thanks in advance!!!
I love this video. Thank you. I use number one number two number three and number five. My question is about number three the sharp short top spin to the duece court. I mostly hit soft to get it into that corner but it looks like you are still applying a good bit of pace. Is it about half way between serve one and two , pace-wise?
This was a great video and I learned a lot from it as usual. I do have an unrelated question. Is there any rule about using your bare hand instead of a paddle to return a ball? I thought I heard somewhere if you don't touch your paddle with your open hand you can use that hand to return a ball.
Thank you very much Jordan. One question: I've been using the drop service consistently for almost a year. Do you feel there's an advantage to tossing the ball instead of using the drop serve?
Does your stance (feet placement) always the same for all these serves? It looks like it is? I tend to point or move my front foot in the direction I hit the ball. Great video for the different serves!
I use the sliced spin serve very effectively and people struggle to make a good return. If you are able to vary the speed of the slice serve and angle, you have a winner !
Hi Briones, I got a question for you: in your first drive top spin serve when the paddle makes contact with the ball I see the movement of your wrist is rather from side right to up left than from low to high. Is it correct? I try to do it myself from low to high, is it correct? please advice on this. Thank you for helping we the pickleball beginners.
Jordan have always enjoyed and learned much from your videos, but the rule states that the "highest point of the paddle must not be above the highest part of the wrist when the paddle strikes the ball" so especially on the slice serve, that has to be illegal because the top of the paddle is not at its highest but sideways. Your thoughts, please
Thanks for the great instruction. I'm a 4.0 player and an aggressive serve proponent as I find it can win me points on my third shots or make my thirds easier. But I'm wondering, what did it "cost" you to abuse Katrina with those nasty angled serves? You should let her serve to you some, too!
Hey Jordan, whenever I try a slice serve, I get accused of it being illegal because I'm more chipping (chopping it down) than hitting it from low to high. But when you do it in the ad court, it looks like you still go low to high so it's legal. I have to work on that. Nasty!
Rule states''head not the paddle must not be above the highest part of the wrist. Are you sure you are legal here?? Slow mo makes it appear illegal, not that anyone would call it.@@BrionesPickleball
Any tips on defending against the short angle serves? Just be quicker? It's like I'm getting there a second too late or I'm going to break an ankle getting there.
Is there a good way to tell whether I might be doing an illegal serve due to highest point of my wrist being below the highest point of the paddle when it contacts the ball?
Great video, I'm ex tennis player, new in playing PB (everyone plays doubles here) and it looks like in rec play PB serving--once "just get the ball in" has evolved into tennis serving. As an ex tennis player yourself, these spin serves are prob second nature to you. Do you teach PB doubles teams on offense to discuss/ hand signal prior to beginning the point where server will be placing the ball, which kind of spin will be used, etc. I think 3.0 Rec doubles players will be seeking this kind of play, no longer province of 'advanced.'
I do all of them plus a drop serve with heavy slice-high to low. Ball doesn't kick up when it hits the ground. Lower level players end up hitting it into the net.
A serve I like to use that seems effective is straight down the center line when on the odd side for a right-handed player. I set up over toward the center line and if my opponent does not adjust I send a top spin serve right down the line. Risky, yes, but if it's in or on the line almost impossible for them to return. Have you used this serve?
I feel more consistent letting the ball bounce on the serve, and it ensures a legal serve if I'm hitting sidespin or slice, but are there disadvantages to letting the ball bounce?
the serves that hit the close kitchen line area look REAL REAL close to being faulted - if you slow it down the head of your paddle is above your wrist on nearly all of those serves but one of them. No one calls these faults it seems though...
I have a problem with pinpoint serving. I can't get the ball to where I want it to go. How can I rectify my serve to get the ball where I want it to land?
Does the grip on the ball have any factor whatsoever in serving? I often implement a knuckle ball grip in hopes that the ball takes the unpredictable path like that pitch. I think I often rely on the 1st and 4th ones. Tonight, i'm going to try to implement the sidespin and lob serve.
Your paddle face is not faced towards your target during impact. There could be several things that affect that. You should send in your serve so that we can analyze it here: link.myjourneypickleball.com/LlXHEnbJ9Bb
Thanks for video. The only problem is that at the lower levels of play so many people think they are serving a good top spin serve, but they do so illegally because they contact the ball too high or sideways rather that with an upward motion. And when you tell them, it starts an argument. I feel this type of serve is ruining the game for so many 3.0-3.5 level players because it is difficult to defend as it is, and then it becomes frustrating when it is illegal on top of that. Eventually it devolves into everyone hitting illegal serves and no one playing by the rules anymore. Very frustrating!
@@BrionesPickleball Interesting. My experience is the opposite but my guess is that it is because you play with or against better players than I do regularly. Plus you know how to coach people to learn to serve correctly. Where I play, it is mostly players who have never taken lessons, they try to teach themselves and sometimes don’t even know the rules regarding what is or is not a legal serve.
These are great serves. One note is that the serve at 2:14 is not legal, you are throwing the ball up (ever so slightly) before hitting it. Same at 2:35 and 6:50. But if you can keep that from happening, these are awesome.

What grip are you serving with. Sorry if I missed it in the video. Great video. New player so I am glad I discovered this channel.
Eastern!
My fav is 1 and 4…I also like the bounce backhand slice serve
👍🏻👍🏻
Love your video and easy to understand. I do have a question. I rolled my wrist like a stop spin serve , my contact point is still below my waist. I have been playing pickleball for about 6 months and no one said anything to me that it is illegal but recently someone told me my serve is illegal. I am confused. Can you please confirm if this is true? 🙂
Can’t tell without seeing it
Very helpful😊
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video - one comment: most players below 4.0 have weaker backhands, you should also show the side spin serve on the deuce court, not just the ad-court
👍🏻
typically, I would only use Serve number four against a left-hander in the even court. A right-hander will go out and get the ball and he's already on his way in so that's like inviting him to the net. I would use the same type of serve against the right hander in the odd Court with the opposite spin.
I’ve aced 5.0 right handed players with this serve . Lol
That was awesome so now can you do a video on how best to return those serves?
In a future video!
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Question: Preference of the bounce serve or toss serve. Which one is better and has more versatility?
Versatility, the drop. What most good players use, the volley serve.
Just found your channel. Is there anyway that you can explain how to put a spin on a ball when serving and how to keep the ball lower when serving. Thanks in advance!!!
Try an eastern grip. As for topspin, we have multiple videos on this
Thanks. I'll look for your videos on topspin.
I love this video. Thank you. I use number one number two number three and number five. My question is about number three the sharp short top spin to the duece court. I mostly hit soft to get it into that corner but it looks like you are still applying a good bit of pace. Is it about half way between serve one and two , pace-wise?
I would say so, it’s definitely not a power serve. All you need is good location!
The soft corner serves are great against teams that like to stack as it delays the time it takes for the returner to get back into position.
Yes!
What paddle are you using in this video? Great video thanks.
Power air
Nvm I found it.
What about a backhand serve? OR a switch to off hand serve? Both are great to mix things up and change the pace.
Those can be great too!
Hi, Great video! I was wondering if backhand serves are illegal?
No
Thanks- do you ever use the backhand slice serve?@@BrionesPickleball
@leonmoon5151 not often
This was a great video and I learned a lot from it as usual. I do have an unrelated question. Is there any rule about using your bare hand instead of a paddle to return a ball? I thought I heard somewhere if you don't touch your paddle with your open hand you can use that hand to return a ball.
You can’t use your hand.
You're thinking of handball
You make it look easy! lol nice thanks
Thabks Leigh!
Thank you very much Jordan. One question: I've been using the drop service consistently for almost a year. Do you feel there's an advantage to tossing the ball instead of using the drop serve?
No, I don’t think so. You may be able to get a higher contact with the toss serve, but not sure.
Does your stance (feet placement) always the same for all these serves? It looks like it is? I tend to point or move my front foot in the direction I hit the ball. Great video for the different serves!
Mine is the same. Thanks!
Now that we know how to serve. How do you return that serve. What do you look for in how to return that serve. Ben
Good question Ben, good positioning on the the return is the most important one. I’ll have to do a video on this soon.
I use the sliced spin serve very effectively and people struggle to make a good return. If you are able to vary the speed of the slice serve and angle, you have a winner !
👍🏻👍🏻
I was told a slice serve is now (2023) illegal?
@@frank88ster hmmm that's what I thought too, but perhaps it's legal as long as you are hitting with an upward arc
Your position at the baseline during these serves varies....look at this aspect when he demonstrates these great alternatives to serving
Thanks David !
A skilled player loves a lob serve. A 2nd shot drop into the corner of their NVZ is a sure winner. 😊
Not with better and more mobile players, that would just easily invite them to the net.
It is a low to high motion, swinging up to your left shoulder. Check out this video it may help.

Love to know how to begin serving/hitting with a spin.
ua-cam.com/video/Fo6xWCHWk08/v-deo.html
Jordan have always enjoyed and learned much from your videos, but the rule states that the "highest point of the paddle must not be above the highest part of the wrist when the paddle strikes the ball"
so especially on the slice serve, that has to be illegal because the top of the paddle is not at its highest but sideways. Your thoughts, please
Yes, look at it in slow motion, it is lower than the wrist.
A lot…. Lol
Hi ! One question… after you hit the ball on the serve your right foot goes into the court… is that a fault ?
No
Hey Jordan, whenever I try a slice serve, I get accused of it being illegal because I'm more chipping (chopping it down) than hitting it from low to high. But when you do it in the ad court, it looks like you still go low to high so it's legal. I have to work on that. Nasty!
😊
Rule states''head not the paddle must not be above the highest part of the wrist. Are you sure you are legal here?? Slow mo makes it appear illegal, not that anyone would call it.@@BrionesPickleball
Any tips on defending against the short angle serves? Just be quicker? It's like I'm getting there a second too late or I'm going to break an ankle getting there.
That’s tough…. You may have to move your return position closer .
Is there a good way to tell whether I might be doing an illegal serve due to highest point of my wrist being below the highest point of the paddle when it contacts the ball?
It’s hard to tell in real time.
You can send us your serve here: link.myjourneypickleball.com/LlXHEnbJ9Bb
Great video, I'm ex tennis player, new in playing PB (everyone plays doubles here) and it looks like in rec play PB serving--once "just get the ball in" has evolved into tennis serving. As an ex tennis player yourself, these spin serves are prob second nature to you. Do you teach PB doubles teams on offense to discuss/ hand signal prior to beginning the point where server will be placing the ball, which kind of spin will be used, etc. I think 3.0 Rec doubles players will be seeking this kind of play, no longer province of 'advanced.'
I don’t use hand signals currently, but it can be a good idea!
I do all of them plus a drop serve with heavy slice-high to low. Ball doesn't kick up when it hits the ground. Lower level players end up hitting it into the net.
👍🏻
How about the backhand spin serve?
That’s a good one to add too!
Nice court...is this in your back yard? What was the damage?
35k
What grip are you using for the top spin serve?
Eastern forehand
@@BrionesPickleball are you using Eastern for the drop shot as well?
If I’m hitting a topspin drop, yes
Do you have a video on how to defend / return your serves?
Not yet, but this will help.

Are you anywhere near the Ocala FL area? I would sign up for some lessons. Thx
AZ !
Yes, although against better players, they will return it at a very high percentage.
Katrina's skills have improved over the last few vids!
😊😊
I feel more consistent letting the ball bounce on the serve, and it ensures a legal serve if I'm hitting sidespin or slice, but are there disadvantages to letting the ball bounce?
Nothing wrong with the drop serve!
I know a spin serve is not allowed since 2023? Would those be legal in a competition??
Yes
@@BrionesPickleball how so?
the serves that hit the close kitchen line area look REAL REAL close to being faulted - if you slow it down the head of your paddle is above your wrist on nearly all of those serves but one of them. No one calls these faults it seems though...
No… legal….
@@BrionesPickleball legal to serve with paddle higher than wrist? When did rule change?
@@DemianDawson it would have to be fully above the wrist to be illegal, which it’s not.
I have a problem with pinpoint serving. I can't get the ball to where I want it to go. How can I rectify my serve to get the ball where I want it to land?
There could be several reasons for that…
I can’t say without looking at your serve.
ua-cam.com/video/Fo6xWCHWk08/v-deo.html
That last serve was nasty
😊
Does the grip on the ball have any factor whatsoever in serving? I often implement a knuckle ball grip in hopes that the ball takes the unpredictable path like that pitch. I think I often rely on the 1st and 4th ones. Tonight, i'm going to try to implement the sidespin and lob serve.
I use an eastern grip for topspin serves. You may slightly adjust for the lob and sidespin serves.
Are these all still legal? Also, I can't find good videos on how to return good, low serves. Any suggestions?
Yes

I am struggling with getting a serve in. Any tips?
Your paddle face is not faced towards your target during impact. There could be several things that affect that.
You should send in your serve so that we can analyze it here:

Thanks for video. The only problem is that at the lower levels of play so many people think they are serving a good top spin serve, but they do so illegally because they contact the ball too high or sideways rather that with an upward motion. And when you tell them, it starts an argument. I feel this type of serve is ruining the game for so many 3.0-3.5 level players because it is difficult to defend as it is, and then it becomes frustrating when it is illegal on top of that. Eventually it devolves into everyone hitting illegal serves and no one playing by the rules anymore. Very frustrating!
Most serves that players think are “illegal” are usually legal, from my years of experience.
Where did you get the Selkirk shorts??
I guess it’s a Selkirk sponsored thing (for now)
Can serves 3-5 be done with a bounce serve?
Yes
When hitting the deeper topspins (#1 and #2) it looks as if the paddle head is dangerously close to being higher than the highest point of the wrist.
I'm a ref. He is fine. Watch the contact point again. It wouldn't be called in tournament play.
Thanks Brian. Most pro player’s serves are at that “line”.
Are you allowed to step over the line on the follow through?
Yes, it’s after you hit the ball.
I thought the rules say you cannot put an intentional spin on the serve... am I misreading that it is a fault if viewed as such?
You can’t put “spin” on the toss
Very timely video….
Glad it was helpful!
These are great serves. One note is that the serve at 2:14 is not legal, you are throwing the ball up (ever so slightly) before hitting it. Same at 2:35 and 6:50. But if you can keep that from happening, these are awesome.
You can LEGALLY, “throw” the ball up on your serve.
Quelle est votre paddle
I need to practice my Spanish…
