Mind-blowing video! Witnessing Ian's rapid improvement under Jordan's guidance is incredible. The depth of strategy and mechanics covered in just 30 minutes is unreal. And with my Oliver-Sport paddle by my side, I'm inspired to hit the court and level up my game too!
One of the best PB videos I've ever seen. As a long-time tennis player, I wish I would have had someone like Jordan around when I made the transition to PB. The adjustments Ian had to make were exactly the ones I had to puzzle out ... open stance volley? That's crazy man! :)
Brilliant video. Fascinating to see both Ian's ability to grasp strategy and mechanics quickly AND Jordan's skill in teaching and evaluating at a hyper pace while constantly encouraging. Basically a pickleball camp wrapped in 30 minutes.
Thanks for the coaching pointers. I played this morning using these simple adjustments to my game and I won not once but three games in a row against players who only two weeks ago were far more advanced than me. They were all like where did you come from. It made my day. Thank you.
So much fun to see my old online coach Ian learn the ins and outs of pickleball. ian is a master at teaching tennis. Neat to see him give pickleball a try. I am waiting for some of Ian's great tennis tutorials to cross over to pickleball.
SO great to see Ian get coached and to see his interest in the sport! I’m a 4.5 tennis player making the transition and this is easily the most helpful video I’ve found. Ian’s a GREAT coach and our tennis levels and thought processes are very similar (obviously, cause I’ve taken so much of his advice!). The silliest part of the whole pickleball/tennis thing is this simple question, “is it fun?” Both of the games are SUPER fun and TOTALLY different strategically. Are we mad at ping pong players?? No! 😂 Pickleball is so stupid fun. And I’m still playing tennis. And ping pong. 😂 You got a new subscriber!
Two incredible coaches -- together! So cool guys! That was like 20 lessons in 20 minutes. And Ian, you are doing amazing! Can't wait to see you guys in the match! Appreciate you both so much.
Keeping the stance open and square to the kitchen line even when pinching middle is really helpful. Ive never heard anyone say that and so while I'm really good at poaching I've been struggling against cross court passing shots.
Looking forward to the doubles gameplay. As a coach and teacher I find that one lesson wouldn't be enough to raise a player's level unless they were already at the threshold and needed minor adjustments. The three facets to learning; attaining knowledge (knowing what to do and how to do it), the ability to perform (applying the knowledge), and finally performing in competition (consistency in application while competing) requires a lot of time. Partly to make the new skills a habit, partly to make it so you don't have to "think" about it every time. For example a noob like me: I had to learn to try to return deep so to keep the serving team on the defensive (and allow me to get to the kitchen). Then I had to learn to return deep (and lower if I could). THEN I have to keep telling myself on serve receive to do so and practice doing it so I can FINALLY do it consistently in a game. Thanks for the videos Briones! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for the lesson from a tennis player getting back into pickleball (1980s) My college professor was friends with the family that invented the game and we (tennis team) helped him put one of the first instructional pickleball manuals together. You lesson is perfect for understanding footwork and racket positioning. Thanks! Cheers!
Big fan of your videos. Ive been watching before i knew how to even take score in a pickleball game. This is definitely one of your best videos, pleaee keep them coming.
Haven’t tried pickleball yet but when I transition from tennis I’ll be referring back to this video. I’ve picked up many pointers. Thanks Ian for being open minded about pickleball. Even though I haven’t played I know I’ll enjoy it once I do.
Love the video! It was quickly touched on in the video, but once Ian started getting comfortable with his backhand volley and stopped hopping around to get to a forehand, his volleys dramatically improved!
Jordan, loved this video, picked up some valuable tips and hope you will do more in this format. It would be especially great to see an older player. You have a lot of followers like me, (69 yrs old) who don't have Ian's youth and athleticism.
Ian was probably a very good tennis player. Just learning how to play pickleball puts him at 3.0, his youth, hand/eye coordination, fast hands, and athleticism puts him over 3.5 With his great ability to learn, it’s not surprising at all
I have seen Ian's tennis videos before so I can see him moving to pickleball. The tips i really liked is the split step as you work you way to the net. Plus hitting a bit upwards or lift instead of just hitting straight.
I learn more from this video than all other videos with crazy attention grabbing headlines combined. Well done!! I am going to save this one watch it again so I don't forget the fundamentals! Subscribed!
Jordan, that guy had racket skills. He was way better than a 2.5. Almost 3.5 once you explained things to him. He had athletic ability which is key. Nice video.
I feel a little better. I've been playing for a little over 2 weeks, and I'm no where near as good as Ian! But, in my defense, I'm quite a bit older, and have no racket sport background. So, I'll keep at it! :-)
Well he is probably the best, most accessible tennis coach found on the internet, and he wrote one of the best tennis coaching books of all time. So, yeah…he’s got some racket skills 😂
Be motivated! Everyone is on their own journey. He has hit tens of thousands of balls with a racket, so he may have had a little advantage over most players 😊
@@traceycaldiero4912 Haha, if I had been a tennis player I probably would’ve gotten better faster too. I’d also know who Ian is (I had no idea) and would know how silly it was to use him as a comparison.
Anyone who grew up playing tennis at a high level at a young age SHOULD adapt to this game fast. Footwork and preparation is thr thing that you work years and years on and once engrained, that doesn’t go away. The mechanics of slightly changing your swing from a longer stroke to a smaller, quicker, and using more of an open stance, is pretty simple….even if never picking up a paddle before.
Loved this video, especially as ian is left handed like me . His tennis background certainly strengthens his backhand . I have badminton/table tennis experience , my pickle ball backhand is poor. This is a very helpful video, thank you

One thing to note here 9:45, you can anticipate a ball landing in the kitchen and step in before the ball bounces, the rule is you can't hit a ball while standing in the kitchen or on kitchen line unless that ball has bounced in the NVZ. No matter what though, you can not volley a ball while in the kitchen.

Great purpose on the material. I got a question, I am switching from tennis and I am quite effective on hitting the ball heavy, hitting lots of passing shots but it's true, it's mostly 3.5-4.0 level where most of the people hit the ball soft. Which paddle you recommend and which maintains a good power, spin, and pop and good control as well. I am trying 16mm paddles, no issues on power and spin as I can accelerate the paddle easily, the issue is on the dinks and dropshots, I feel the paddle dead, currently I'm playing with Engage MX 6.0 and EX 6.0 Pro but I am getting a CRBN1 as well.
Hey Jordan, do you have anything less intensive training, other than the 2 day class (like a 1 to 3 hr class)? I'm not planning on doing any tournaments at this point, I just want to improve my shots, not pick up any bad habits and improve game play tactics. Right now I'm just playing rec games and I want to get better.

Those are all great paddles, unfortunately, nothing is going to feel like a tennis racket lol
amazing video. amazing coach

At 22:07 "Giving Ian his first ERNE " I think I see Jordan jumping over the kitchen and hitting of the air. Is that correct or am I missing something?
Yes
This is great!

:53 Ian... Never been much of an equipment guy! LOL
Lol
Hey Jordan, do you have anything less intensive training, other than the 2 day class (like a 1 to 3 hr class)? I'm not planning on doing any tournaments at this point, I just want to improve my shots, not pick up any bad habits and improve game play tactics. Right now I'm just playing rec games and I want to get better.
Hey Monzi, maybe I’ll offer some different things in the future, but at this time, the intensives are the only offer.
@@BrionesPickleball bummer but fully understand!
is the intensive price the price for one person or 4?
Price is per person. It’s all on our website:
