This is great, but I have so much trouble doing it as I find it very unnatural to move my right leg first when I want to go left or my left leg first when I want to go right.
I have only played for a few weeks, but even as someone brand new to the game I can use your clear suggestions about footwork. I have just been scrambling after the ball. I can't wait to apply your footwork suggestions.
Love this and it is very helpful to designate the different change of weight patterns in pickleball. I was a professional ballet dancer and have taught ballet for 38 years. Just starting to process the combinations of foot work. It is simpler than I thought but really helpful to see it in action. When I first started my teachers said my feet were "too busy"! Now I see that you use a side step initiated by your opposite direction foot. Ie, that leg is loaded in order to create the power or at least impetus to move (like the transition in a drive or serve). Then I do one from ballet which is called "chassé" which the lead foot is actually in the direction you want to (opposite the shuffle), then bring my feet together in a sideways hop. The advantage is that you move faster and when you land your glutes and quads are loaded for action. There is some kind of neuro muscular reaction that makes this advantageous for response. Secondly lunges are obvious choices, but I need to move my feet more and do the shuffle or chassé! Guess I get lazy-- thanks for the reminder Justin!!
Really good video. Good footwork is underrated in all sports. The nuances of 4 different footwork patterns at the kitchen shows how complicated it can be. I definitely need to work on several of these. My feet 👣 tend to stay glued to the kitchen line.
An exceptional video. You have covered and demonstrated everything very clearly, and cutting your backhand crosscourt dinks to make them less attackable. Well done!
You are the coach of the year. I had broken it down to dinking, ground strokes, and footwork. Footwork is the foundation of the other two. My focus is mainly singles. Great video.
Finally, someone addressing footwork. Long have thought how important it is, but no one was making a video on it. Thanks. Things to work on. Footwork footwork footwork.
Such excellent coverage of footwork particular to pickleball! Most people don't get this until quite late in their skill development especially because it's different than tennis.
Yes, this is very helpful. I was a fairly high-level tennis player, but I find a moving my feet all over the place of the net, I didn’t know what to do with them properly other than lunge step and cross stepping on balls you are reaching for on back hand side.
Yep, You have to keep your feet aligned with your hips. Also, I tell people to keep their shoulders level. One shoulder higher than the other leads to errors.
Great info for a couple who are working to move up in tournament play. Your paddle spin after every shot is fun to watch, I wonder if you do that in full play?
I notice that on your shuffle, as well as your lunge, you first measure the depth of the ball, and adjust your movement vertically as well as horizontally.
The best video I have seen on footwork. I love how many people comment on you spinning your paddle. I didn't even notice... probably because I like to spin my paddle too. Next video you need to do a how to spin your paddle like Jordan.
Thanks great demonstration of footwork and explanations made clearly. I just want to know when are you going to teach how to properly spin your paddle while in the ready position..🙂
I just started knowing pickleball but since I have played tennis, ping pong, badminton, and racket ball all along and realized pickleball is really a derivative of all of the above and much lighter. If anyone have played one or more of the above sports, then you only need to go back to your previous experiences of those sports and sink in. Then get into the court and practice from what you already know. The video here represented the footwork of badminton. From some other UA-cam clips, the mid-line attack represented the strategy of tennis double (and lobbing). I see that volley practice is essential in this sport and it's a staple for tennis too..
Great video! Will help my play going forward. Have you ever done a video on pre game stretching? I am 68 and stretch 30 minutes before PB, but would like to see what someone at your level does. Thanks!
Nice instruction! As a one week Pickleball player I will definitely work to make sure I utilize these three basic footwork patterns. Not really new to racquet sports (competitive racquetball) solid footwork is the foundation to a consistent game. Suscribed and hopefully you have additional instructional Pickleball videos to watch.
Briones, this was an excellent lesson. I’m on week 3 of learning Pickleball and for a person who has NEVER played any sports I must say I’m progressing well as I’ve been told by better players. 😊 I’m playing this morning and I can’t wait to put into practice the first 2 foot actions. The third foot work I’m a little nervous about because I was told NEVER move back for a shot.🥴 But after watching you, your back movement is more like a shift of your body. I can do that, I’m sure. Thanks for this Awesome lesson. You ROCK!💃🏽
OMG! The feet actions were SO much harder than I thought they would be. I watched your video three times and when it came to executing these moves on the court with four people much BETTER than me it was SO HARD. I know it’s because I’m very new to the game. I will keep trying and will focus on one action at a time.😊
Some people have fidget spinners, Jordan has his paddle 🙂 Another excellent video, sir. Extra credit to your wife, who has to hit all those practice shots to you!
Funny - I never noticed the paddle spinning until I read this comment. Maybe that's because I spin my paddle before each serve - I do a hard spin and finish with a half spin. Hmmm.
Great video! Footwork and positioning seem to be the most glaring issues I see among my fellow players. Sometime I'd like a video on stacking. When and how to do it ... and when NOT to do it.
This video has impeccable timing, lol! I am working on this in my game, and the shuffle step was brought up to me for the first time yesterday. Your verbal explanation and following demonstration really showed how it's done. I also just realized how much I cross-step. Well done, excellent video! I know you most likely have your videos planned out, but I'm learning to be aggressive and attack the ball. Can you create another excellent video on anticipation and court coverage for opponents' shot selections (I've heard it referenced as court angles, court coverage, etc.)? Ex: My partner and I hit the ball here, so our opponent will most likely hit it here or has to hit it here.
Great instruction. This is something I can practice in my own. I see the importance of foot work and being in the best position to return. Also, like the point about getting back to the ready position so your ready for the next shot.
I'm 6'5" and I often strive _way_ to hard to never step into the kitchen if there's any chance at all to dig for a volley (which, for me, is quite a lot). This controlled lunge step in and reverse lunge step back out is a good fundamental. I hate to get trapped in the kitchen as the ball heats up, and this is a good way to get your feet reliably planted onside again after stepping in. Maybe this will help quell my excessive digging. Time will tell.
Jordan, I know you wanted to bring it up (but you didn’t), but the drop step is the key to the double backhand top spin volley push attack. ALW has virtually patented this.
I get pain in my left knee after a few games. I think it’s something to do with my serving. I’m right handed and I serve from the hand without bounce. I feel like I’m twisting as I step forward with my right foot on follow through. The shuffle and lunge is definitely going to help me up at the NVZ!! Thanks!
You have a very simple way of communicating what needs to be done and then do a great job of demonstrating the steps. Thank you. I look forward to trying it later today and/or tomorrow.
Thanks for this video. This is one place I had to understand and learn. However, the question is whether is this technique for singles or doubles?? If it is for singles, then aren't we opening one side for our opponent to slam/smash?
Do you have an opinion on switching hands to reach the wide shots instead of crossing over your feet? I find this works pretty well for me, at least for returning the ball into play and keeps me in position for their next return.
This is a great video. Almost like going to dance school. Currently at the non volley line, I am flat footed, just like my feet were stuck in mud. I will Practice this by having my partner just toss the ball to me and I will try to catch it. I will also practice in front of a mirror. I have a long way too go but thanks for the help.
I was trying to watch your paddle movement and found the paddle spin super distracting. I suffer from poor concentration skills, if my partner starts moving as I am hitting or opponents moving or making noise seems enough to distract me. Any tips to overcome this? Next time you do this demo, try to do a portion of it without paddle spin so we can watch footwork and arm/paddle movements from ready position to ball, hitting and recovery. As you mentioned so critical to success at high levels ... thanks for sharing.
Hey Jordan... I realize this is a footwork vid, but....i noticed that you have two different striking methods for your dinks.... flat-dink for forehand and what appears to be either a scooping or backspin strike for your backhand. Am I processing this correctly?
Jordan thank you for your videos. I have learned a lot of pickleball skills from your videos. Skills are an important part of pickleball. Could also do a video on instincts in pickleball. I am at a point where I need to complement my skill with what I call the instincts of the game. For an example. when my partner goes to one area of the court I cover his or her area. Great video! I learned so much from ALL your videos! You're a great teacher! Thank you so much!!!
I'm glad you find them helpful!
One thing that’s not mentioned that I notice is your tempo. You make it look effortless by having good footwork and moving without wasted energy.

You can also use a cross by over step on wide ball.
You can on the backhand side, yes
Another enjoyable informative video, thanks.

This is such a great video. One question for wider balls: do we have to shuffle and then do a cross step, or is just the cross step is enough?
Either or. A shuffle or a cross step

As you mentioned so critical to success at high levels ... thanks for sharing.
For shuffle step, to move right, is the initial moving pushing off your left foot or pushing off your right foot?
I would say it’s more of a weight transferring motion, as you replace your left foot from where your right foot was
Just like in the video.
Awesome placement by Catrina!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤙🏼😎
Jordan, I notice between shots you frequently twist the paddle around in your hand. Are you changing/adjusting your grip?
Not necessarily, most times I’m just getting ready for the next ball.

Good timing to watch this. I was plating against a 4 the other day. His dinks were all steep cross court angles. I was getting them all back same way they came. But my feet were getting tangled up a few times. I probanly looked like one of those air clowns flailing back and forth. I was getting the job done but it was inefficient. Good lesson.
How does spinning the paddle in your hand after most shots accomplish?
Habit from tennis 🎾
It’s very stylish.
Lol
On a really wide dink should you cross over first then lunge? Then you never have your back to the court. I think I saw a Simone video about this.
Practice both. I try to lunge instead of cross step if I can.
Committing to spend atleast 5-10 mins a day working on this. I filmed myself and my footwork was horrible.
