The absolute best video on spin I have every seen. Now I finally understand what spin is all about. Will share with everyone. Thnx for making this very clear and no nonsense video.
I think I have it! Top spin ball into the top of the net, bottom spin, ball into the bottom of the net All kidding aside, very good vid to show proper spin techniques as I'm a beginner
I'm fairly new to Pickleball, I've been playing less than 2 months. I've been watching many videos from different people and I really like your method of teaching John. Thank you! And yes, you can bet that I subscribed.
Best explanation I've seen so far on hitting spin shots for either pickleball or tennis. Also, great demo on how to do solo practice shots on a wall. Keep up the good work.
This is the easiest explanation for spin and I have watched many videos! I sent this to my drilling group and we are all practicing it. New subscriber to your channel; so thank you.
I’ve been looking for this exact tutorial! I am hoping that perhaps you can do a followup video on how to recognize and react to spins as the receiver? As a beginner, I have trouble knowing what to do in those situations. Thanks so much for this.
I was thinking the same thing. My guess is a) put your own spin on it to counter or b) recognize how the ball is spinning and how that affects the ball when you hit it, and compensate your power/angle
First I have to say the very BEST video on explaining the spins. I have watched a lot of videos and by far this is the best!! Would love to see more videos and PLEASE do one on fire fight at the net. Thanks so much!
Awesome John! I enjoy & appreciate so much your way of illustrating the how to to each spin /slice. Future suggestions: demo the use of each type of spin / slice, in serve, return of serve, dinking, etc. thanks again!
Your videos are the best I've seen on basics that aren't obvious yet are simply explained and demonstrated. The basics then become higher end instruction.
I really like how you explain what happens with the ball when your paddle angle is a certain way. For a beginner like me it so helpful. I will be doing this tomorrow in my warm up. I wrote it all down so I can review it. Thanks I will be watching your content for sure. So far I think you are extremely helpful.
John, Loved the video lesson. The transition from normal speed to slo-mo and then back to normal speed really made your point more impactful. Great job! Much appreciated.
Hi John, I have been teaching spin for a while with the same approach that you describe which depends on the direction of paddle swing path and the direction of the paddle angle at the instant the ball is hit. I am with you 100%! Consistent dependable shots with spin can only be generated by controlling path and paddle directions at contact. However when I teach this method to help the students understanding, I emphasise that the direction of the paddle angle at instant of contact must be defined as ‘open’ or ‘closed’ with respect to (wrt) the direction of the paddle’s swing path. This is clearly seen in your wall demonstration when you play a topspin shot. At the instant of contact, the direction of the path of the paddle for the topspin shot is almost vertical and the paddle angle direction is ‘closed’ wrt to the direction of the path, but it is ‘open’ wrt the horizontal direction. My reason for mentioning this is that beginning students will swing from low to high with a path direction which is slightly above the horizontal and their topspin shots will consistently go into the net. One other comment I’d like to make, concerns the situation when a backspin shot is hit with a high arc. In this case the ball will not skid forward after it bounces but it will check up after the bounce. To counter this a player needs to read the spin and get closer to the bounce of the ball before playing their next shot.
Hey Graham, thanks for the reply. Definitely all good points and I agree. When I’m making these videos I have to find a balance of what is the critical info to deliver to keep it simple and digestible and what will start to muddy the waters and make the video drag out.
I appreciate the simple and clear explanation - thank you John. I would like to add one more thing to the racket angle and swing path that meaningfully affects both topspin and underspin ... I transitioned to pickleball from competitive table tennis where the third aspect, Racket Speed also significantly affects the amount of spin. It might not as much in pickleball, but still racket speed at contact will affect that amount of spin, at least moderately.
Outstanding video John!! Players would greatly enhance their game if they would make a decision on which spin and the correlating technique to use on each shot. An analogy would be a baseball batter and deciding which pitch to swing at and which pitch to take. Don't swing at pitches outside the strike zone. In pickleball, play defensive with a small motion with minimal underspin on the balls that are well placed and outside your strike zone or wha is described an not attackable.
Hi John - is it just me or at 6:00 of the video when you are demonstrating top spin which is to be a square face and upward swing path… it looks like you have an open face?
John, thank you for your expert and easy to understand instructions on all the topics you touch on. With regard to topspin and underspin, is it at all necessary to change the grip from the continental grip to another in order to execute either spin? Thank you.
This must be one of your earlier video. You look nice without the baseball cap. You have hair!!! Thanks for the tutorial John! If I had open paddle, would the ball not be too long or too high?
Thank you for making and sharing these videos- they are very helpful. I especially like this one on spin and was wondering if you could have a part two to it with showing these spin shots in play? I like watching your body mechanics of shots in true game scenarios.
Hey John! Great content and really good explanation in simple/easy to understand terms. This is something that seems basic but for a beginner its huge. Appreciate it!
Great Vid! I've been using topspin and sidespin a lot for the last few weeks, and I've been looking to add some underspin to my game so this vid came out at the perfect time
I just subbed and salute you too. Great lesson. Now I will dominate my opponents. The cool thing is the attack will be stealth. Thanks for the tips. Hehe.
Love the video John, thanks for this break down. Is this the primary way you would teach attacking off the bounce? That is the last layer I’ve struggled to really add to my game, and wanted to hear thoughts there
This would fall into the situation of the defensive lob will most likely end up with some backspin on it, but there’s no need to purposely add it. You should be focused on getting the height and distance of the lob correct. The spin will have very little impact on the shot.
Thank you! Very useful. Now can you do a video on how to deal with topspin and underspin when you are returning the ball. I've heard differing information that if someone hits a slice to you you have to reverse the spin to a topspin. is that correct?
Little confused, on backhand under-spin . Is paddle coming from shoulder down to flat? That’s little high to low or just start flat swing with open paddle face?
It can have a little downward motion. Think of a small u shape. I hesitate to say that though because excessive chopping down is usually the biggest fault I see. You can easily create under spin with a flat swing or even a slightly low to high swing though.
Try it, especially on serve and return of serve when the opponent HAS to let the ball bounce. Pay attention to the orientation of the racket face as that determines the direction the ball goes. Opening the racket face a little makes the change of direction after the bounce more extreme. The faster the paddle brushes across the ball, the more spin you get.
Hey John, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made. I loved your videos. I was wondering if I could help you edit your videos and also make highly engaging shorts for you.

John, Great stuff! One question-when changing paddle angle do you change grip or rotate forearm? Hoping you will do a session on roll volleys. Keep up the fantastic work!
Hey Vincent. It’s just rotating the forearm to adjust paddle angles. No grip change. Yeah, I’ve got a roll volley video planned for one of my next couple. Thanks!
@John Cincola Pickleball John, Viewed your video again and picked up forearm move. Delighted to hear roll volleys are on your to do list. Thanks much for responding!
Great videos love your teaching methods. Less is more, all about face angle and path. I notice you didn't have top spin 3rd shot drops in your category.
Thanks Jim! Yeah topspin 3rd shot drops are a great option. I just wanted to highlight the top few each. There’s definitely lots of other options I left off the list.
If you pay attention to the slow motion shot of top spin, the ball bounces off the wall at the same angle that it hits. It really should bounce at a lower angle because of gravity. This is the same thing that happens when a ball with topspin bounces off the paddle of your opponent. It rolls up their paddle and is often the reason why people hit long balls. Changes the angle of the ball when coming off the paddle face. If you return a power shot and it goes out of bounds, this might be why. To counter, I respond with strong topspin. It pulls the ball down and keeps it within the baseline. Either that, or you have to REALLY pull power out of the shot because anything with heavy topspin is going to bounce off a surface with a sharper angle, meaning a weaker return of a topspin shot can still easily fly out of bounds. Opposite is true for bottom spin, if you hit it level the ball will roll down the paddle and into the net. I always watch for the spin of the ball when choosing a return hit.
great instructions and explanations -- I wish the video showed your complete motion though -- it's cut off too much to really see the whole shot on either spin
What paddle is the longest ? I am a pro tennis coach. I tried pickle ball for the first time. The first reaction is the lack of power. My tennis backhand was over 100 mph. I cannot get velocity on the pickle ball.
OMG so it's not my imagination! I watched a guy put crazy spin on his ball, but I couldn't see him doing it....everyone else was doing the over exaggerated chopping motions, but I wanted to know how that guy got his ball to spin without telegraphing that he was doing it. Now I know! I've got some work to do!
Not to be that dude but that graph of the top spin shot isn’t exactly correct. The ball goes flatter because it’s going faster and then decelerated but it’s not to that degree. It’s better to think about top spin as an increase in gravity and backspin as a decrease or if you are so aerodynamically as top spin creating downforce and backspin creating lift.
If you hit the ball hard enough, with enough top spin, it does pretty much take that trajectory, but it takes a _massive_ amount of top. This is even more the case when you play into a headwind. I've received balls absolutely hammered low and flat from the baseline with huge top spin, into a stiff headwind, with the ball barely clearing the net, then diving down into the kitchen so fast my hand could barely pace the downward break. It was a drive and a drop perfectly combined into a supremely nasty shot. Fortunately the wind doesn't blow that hard all that often.
I pulled those graphs off the old internet 🤷♂️. Maybe not perfect but they’re close enough to get the point across. Also as Allan said the ball flight is going to be determined by speed. I’m sure there is a topspin ball flight that would look like that at a certain speed.
You need to understand the magnus effect first because your first drawing of the flight path is incorrectly described. ua-cam.com/video/2OSrvzNW9FE/v-deo.html In you flight path, the ball bounces high because you hit the ball high over the net and the force of gravity caused it to bounce a percentage under its peak height, just as if the ball was statically dropped from the air. The magnus effect is still exerting a force on the ball after the bounce and so keeps the ball lower then a ball hit without top spin. When a ball with top spin hits the floor, it will actually accelerate. forward.
Finally, spin makes sense thanks to crystal-clear explanations. Im gonna try it with my new Oliver-Sport paddle, hope to see more videos like this!
Glad it helped!
