To answer some of your questions.
Warhammer 40k is currently on its 10th edition and yes the models are expensive. Currently a squad of Space Marines would cost you around £40 ($50) and yes, you have to build and paint them.

The Eversor is sadly a bit mistold by Bricky. Here a bit of correction.
Yes they are HEAVILY psychologically and mentally conditioned, but not "Clockwork Orange" style.
They have extremely hightened aggression, but they can focus it on their intended target.
Imagine these assassins like a completely overclocked PC. Their body, mind and nervoussystem operate on ludicrous speedlevels, even compared to a Spacemarine. After these former "humans" are completely converted to Eversors, they HAVE to be cryoed, because their bodies would stop functioning after just some weeks, to I think 2 or 3 months at the really hard maximum.
So they are dropped as near as possible to their target, get their target(s) mentally imprinted on the drop and take the fastest and bloodiest way imaginable to their target and after completion (and hopefully surviving) take the fastest way to their cryo, to be frozen again. Think of it as, the shorter the time, they are unfrozen, the more uses you get out of one of those assassins. Like a one-use Battery, that can only used until it is empty and has a certain 'lifetime' left.
An Eversor is one of the most bloody and loud messages you can get, if the Imperium is definitely not pleased with your existence. They definitely don't actively kill friendly troops (normally included in their mental imprint) but they will definitely go literally through you, if you are in their path or could slow them down in any way.
I one time read a short "report" of an Eversor who used up all his weapons on reaching the target and then making a complete bloodbath of the targets family and all household by using their silverware like spoons and stuff.
    Greetings from Germany :)
And welcome to the endless Rabbithole that is Warhammer/WH40K

Because recently, the only "reaction videos" I've seen of this are that of vtubers who's reactions are limited by their avatars, or people who are more concerned with their stream chat than actually watching the video. A small information about the Custodes: They don't "sit" in the Palace. They do have training missions, they call "Bloodgames". There are always Custodes on Terra, who go out and test, how near they can get to the Throne Room, before they get cought. They also go out to seek possible dangers for Terra or the Throne itself.
There is a story, where a General of the Imperial Guard nearly faced execution by an Inquisitor, because the General didn't want to sacrifice his men for a mission from the Inquisitor. Right before his execution, a Custodes appeared and took the General under his protection. But as soon, as the target of the Custodes was achieved, the Custodes left and the General was executed by the Inquisitor. That is how high their authority is within the Imperium.
Oh and for the Imperial Palace itself: Don't think of it as a medieval castle. The area of the Palace covers most of the European Continent. And for the Astronomicon, the Imperium hollowed out the Himalayan Mountains.

Welcome to the community! As a semi-professional miniature painter I can confirm that you have to paint all the minis yourself unless you want to pay someone like me to do it. This hobby requires a lot of time, especially for the Tabletop but it's worth it if you love this franchise. You just have to spend your money wisely.
As for the army collecting side of things, it really depends on the faction you're choosing. The more specialized factions like Grey Knights, Imperial Knights, or Leagues of Votann (space dwarves) tend to be cheaper due to requiring less models. That being said, armies like Astra Militarum, Sisters of Battle, or Orks will be on the more expensive side of things since they require more models. Thus, those armies will also require more time to paint all your models just based on the numbers if you don't know what you're doing.
That being said, choose an army that calls to you because it doesn't matter if it is good on the table because rules change every edition which is about a 4 year rotation. If you play something you love and you think looks cool, you'll always be having fun. Again, welcome and I look forward to seeing you continue your Warhammer journey.
FYI I play both Space Wolves, and World Eaters. You won't be disappointed with either faction so go nuts. 🐺👍

I've been reading through the comments below, I have seen a trend that is a little off-putting.
    Warhammer 40K is pricey but it doesn't have to be. Let me explain;
When I started back in 3rd edition, I had no money and no way of accessing a hobby shop where I could purchase the models but what I did have was the internet.
Using popsicle sticks and bottle caps, I built an Army and painted the bottle caps and popsicle sticks to match units. I played with toilet paper rolls as terrain cardboard as my backdrop and me and my friends played the greatest rounds of POOR-HAMMER ever conceived.
The most expensive thing in the beginning was the books. But the core book, then buy the codex for the army you gravitate too.
The rest is just fill it out over time. I started with the Tau, then moved on to the Necrons.
I poor hammered for many years as I slowly filled in the Army with actual models. Every 6 months I would buy one kit. Build it and field it in our poor hammer matches. Before I knew it I had 10,000 points worth of Necron Army and was packing them up and heading to tournaments. Over the years I have added and I have lost units. Every addition shakes up the meta so that units that didn't see much play may now seem more.
Factions rise and they fall between editions.
For me it has been a 30-year hobby. And I look forward to playing with my son and teaching him. Even if he never has a passion for it like I do, it is still something that is appreciated even behind a display case.
    Cheers
    -Alpharious-

60$ for a squad of 2 units (bikes or walkers) and up to 10 models (guardsman or spacemarine) for weaker models.
Bigger tanks, monsters or heroes are up to 100+$
Bigest boxes are like 250$ or 160 for one combat patrool (army starter).
Also paints are like 3+$ per bottle.

Some people buy minis painted, but there are no official painted models, so buying them painted means paying for someone to do commissioned painting work.

@@formattedorc It very much is and you should try it. Once you get deep into it there will come a point where the time investment creeps up to you and you just want it to get done faster, but there are ways to deal with that. When I got into a slump and still had a lot of my army left to paint I had been putting pressure on myself to sit down for a few hours and get things done. Didn't work very well. Then I decided to discipline myself to do at least one brush stroke per day, but not to feel bad if that was it. After that I've been more productive than ever before with my painting. Getting started and then not having any pressure from there on is a great way to inspire creativity and finding the fun again.

Gray nights: The books on their shoulders contain the true names of demons. By speaking a demon's true name, you banish it back to the warp. So they run into battle saying "Jimmy is that you?" In hopes that it banishes a demon.
I jist a little bit, only demons of high level or high standing actually have names. They are numerous but still limited when in the face of infinity. So even having a chance of banishing "Grysmar Stormblade" Is beneficial.

Imperial Knights: In the lore there is no AI. After a machine rebellion all AI was outlawed. Instead they use what's known as bio AI. Bio AI is me hooking myself up to a machine and controlling the machine using my mind in some way or fashion. Think the Matrix.
Imperial Knights they work on that exact same premise. There is a pilot inside hooked up like in Pacific Rim or Evangelion.
Where the Grimdark comes in, every Imperial night has lasted for thousands of years, having multiple pilots across those times. Each time a pilot hooks up to the knight their consciousness is remembered by the machine. So every pilot experiences every other pilot before it. This can cause the machine to move in completely different ways as opposed to what the pilot wants to do. It's almost like driving by committee. Only the most fortified people can operate those Knights without going insane.
Needless to say, everybody wants to be a pilot until they are.
Btw, Dawn of war 3 is where that footage comes from.
    Cheers

So, the expense really varies. If you're buying the first party official Games Workshop, it's going to be at least a few hundred for a full army, and many of them can be well over $1k. However, as a disabled vet on a fixed income, there are ways to skirt the price to be more reasonable. I have two armies working on a third because I buy/print the knockoff 3rd party prints, and it's the only way I am able to reasonably afford and enjoy the hobby. Highly recommend it, especially if you don't care about the competitive scene and playing official tournament events. Also, the faction can be more expensive/cheaper depending on some factors, mostly how "elite" they are.
For example, one of my armies is Custodes (the golden perfect warriors) and they are the cheapest faction in the game because you only need a handful of them because they're so strong individually. On the other hand, my primary faction, Imperial Guard, can be notoriously expensive because, especially if you like infantry, you need a TON of them. It all depends, really.
If you want a cheap start to the game, I definitely recommend Elite factions like Custodes or Grey Knights that don't need a lot of models, or factions where you can run a few big monster models like Imperial Knights, Chaos Knights, and Chaos Daemons.
I also DEFINITELY recommend Kill Team as an easier intro or if you want to sample a few factions. Kill Team is the squad sized team deathmatch variant of 40k and its a much easier on ramp in money, building and painting workload, and in my opinion gameplay. One Kill Team only runs you about $60-$70 ish as opposed to hundreds of dollars, and since there's only about 4-14 models per Kill Team, it can be less intimidating than building and painting an army of up to hundreds of models. Definitely recommend looking into Kill Team as a good first step.

    11:08 Mmmm.. Yes mostly.
Horus was shown (after being badly wounded by a chaos infused blade. His very soul being attacked by the "poision" of the blade. And with manipulation of a chaos worshipper marine whom names alude me, manipulated several marines to allow Horus to basically use a ritual (cause at this point in time. Primarchs are supposed to be unkillable by nearly every way. Heal super quickly, take alot of damage. Some way more then others.) But Horus was dying. And they were desperate for anything. So in private with this ritual, Horus's soul had been torn from his body, or something close to it.
And had a personal meeting with the Gods of Chaos, and they showed him the future. T'zeench did. How the Emperor is worshipped as well as some of his sons, as Gods. How they get treated better, and how the galaxy is suffering, how humanity has regressed back to such an appauling degree, slavery, religious extremism. And Horus didn't see hinself there.
The Gods telling him how this is the future. And how Horus can prevent this. If he were to accept their favour and gifts of power. He'd be strong enough to stop the Emperor. To be a God worthy of Worship, to shape the galaxy how he would like it.
Nurgle removing the poision and infection
Slannesh whispering the tantilizing pleasures he could have one he was Emperor, and how good he could make everyone feel. As they removed the mutating flesh from him, and basically gave him an ethereal kiss to his cheek.
Khorne bulked Horus up, feeling the strength of battle and for the war to come. As well as learning more battle tactics and strategies, ways he never thought to wage war. And promised by Khorne the more blood shed by him and his legion, the stronger he would become.
And he had made a pact. At this point for nearly 100/1000 years of war. The Primarchs had been going around, waging war and the Emperor basically became hands off the war effort to return back to Terra and basically holding a competition or selection to be the War Master. Who would command the other Primarch's for the war.
Can you even imagine. Having your 18 sons gathered and telling them one is going to lead the others and you all shut up and obey.
And they all have their own opinions and thoughts of waging war and their own uniqueness, their own rivalry's and outright hatred of each other.
As well as their own brotherly love and friendships formed with each other.
And with plenty of stupid reasonings why some would join, others manipulated, like Poor Angron and Perturabo and Magnus.
Its such a tragedy and travesty.

    Custodes.
These guys are functionally immortal. (Yes Guys. Guys. Don't care what GW's new stance and backhand insults to fans n forcing women into this all male group thats been this way for many decades)
They rarely ever need food or water. Rarely need sleep. They can shut down parts of their minds to rest, so they can go forever without sleep like us.
They will never die of old age. All custodes were the personal companions of the Emperor before the Imperium, and were his councilors of all manners..
He would often defer n refer to them on how to do x and y. And they'd inform to their best abilities, and fully trusted in the Emperor. Out of true loyalty n love as a friend.
And they don't believe in the Emperor as a God, but as the prime example of what humanity can be.
But thats slowly changing. Seeing how faith n belief in the Emperor has tangable miracles n beliefs that shook them to their very core. And make them question if the Emperor is a God.
They're pretty cool. Sisters of Silence, so badass and some awesome characters. With no talking, yet more personality then anyone from any Bethesda game

35:08 Grey Knights. Luetin has an excellent video on them and covers them entirely. From beginning to end, how they come to be.
But Bricky has most of it down. Demons show up, Grey Knights come.
And to be fair. Demons can influence us normal humans without us even knowing. Effecting our very soul in ways we can never realize. And make us act or do something which'll cause us to say.. Murder a guy, have our way with his woman, put a psyker baby in her. And let his body rot somewhere.
And eventually that child grows up with psychic powers and will open a portal to the warp unintetionally (happens way more then you may think) and causes an entire world to be become a demonic world. And gets sucked out of our reality into the warp.
Thats why they're very scorched earth. And it can be with anyone. From lowly plebians, to Imperial Guards, to Astartes to Govenerors of the world. No one is safe from being purged by the Grey Knights.
They can teleport anywhere. Its with a mix of technology and psycher BS. But they can teleport using the warp to anywhere. But the longer the distance, the chance of soaring through hell, you'll be caught.
Can teleport into your bunker 10,000 feet deep underground. And kill you. Make it look like suicide, or use their psyker magic to make yourself do the deed. No one is safe from Grey Knights. Except maybe.. Custodes n Sisters of Battle.

    51:40 Assassins
Sniper boi's. These guys are really cool, custom weapons that have 4 modes. Sniper, rifle, smg n shotgun. Custom made n modeled for their wielder. No two rifles are the same. By mechanicus smiths working in secret away from the Mechanicus.
They are genetically modified humans from young boys or straight up clones. Or very rarely, very talented boys/men with remarkable marksmenship.
Their muscles genetically enhanced and with mental training to focus every single individual muscle in their body.
Their diets are full of chemical enhancers for eye sight, focus and enhancing senses. Eyesight, sounds. Etc.
Their suits are custom made to be like chameleon skin, to change into their environments. All done by their handlers who are supposed to have control n understanding of how to shift their camoflauge.
And these suits are supposed to be grafted into the skin, theres no top skin layer. Its organic, its your living flesh. Supposedly. Some lore states otherwise.
And they're supposed to find anyway to make a shot on their target. With customized ammo that can puncture through Custodes armor. (Thats debatable.) But more then often enough through most Astartes armours.
For weeks. Months. Still. Motionless. All this time taking in the sights and already formulating 16 ways to evac once they kill their target.
All whilst making their bodies flex in various ways without moving their body for exercise, like what we do.
And the mask is basically an all in one. Tubes rubbing down your throat to delivery liquid intake, oxygen and food. Chemicals. Etc.
The shifters.. Are crazy. They don't just shift into anyone. They can shift into anyone. From a human. To an Astartes. To an Ork. To a Tau. To Eldar.
They can mimic perfectly voices n personalities, their walks, everything.
They can mimic n form human body parts. Like one story. Where one killed and copied the body of a Governor of an Imperial world, wife. And even got preggers n made a child.
Only to finally get the proof she needed, submitted, and got orders to terminate her target.
Did so. And took the baby with them, giving the baby to the master of the assasins. And with no remorse, going off to their next task.
Blank gene. Its more scary then it sounds. You are quite literally born with no ability to feel the warp and its influence. You are born with no soul.
And now you are able to distort everyone around you whom has a soul. You can control to shut off parts of peoples minds, how they see, what they do see, what they hear. Alll that.
And can do it without them ever realizing you are manipulating the input on the souls ability to work a brain.. Psychic powers? No. I cut off your powers entirely. And so much more.
Evesors.. Leutin has a video on them. Its. Brutal.

30:30 Ahhh the Sisters.. Love them
Long ago in Imperium history. A cardinal of the faith tried to take over the Imperium and lead a civil war by using the Church to influence the armies, and failed.
And was said they can now no longer man any armies.
So they quite literally took it to heart and have only women in the official religion.
And they have more then just warriors, they're much like Catholic nuns.
Some Adepta Sororitas are of pure faith where they pray all day and thats all they do.
Some are all about medical and medicine n helping humanity, ensuring the sick get helped, women deliver babies, all that.
Others manage history n holy relics, orders of weapon smiths n armourers. Mechanics. They're a very numerous group and very awesome.

Advice: If you want to learn 40k lore.
Write it down. Get a notebook and make notes.
Theres no way anyone can remember all this, especially accurately. I'm outta the loop on modern stuff. So all I said could be outdated

Should also say Bricky doesn't give necessarily the most accurate info out there for everything.
Its not his fault, its hard to remember all the things, as theres so f'ing much.
And things constantly change in the setting, not necessarily for the best.
But he does infer the gist of the factions, and leaves you to look it up for yourself to learn. And meant in good fun.
If ya want more dumb humour, MajorKill. Want the best loremaster for 40k? Leutin
    (Abit of a ramble/tangent.)
(Cough cough. Female custodes. And chasitising the community for not accepting their brutish change into this. And stepping onto the toes of so many people for this political statement. And also because a huge feminist who's more refered to as a FemNazi. For how much she attacks and berates people for not being more accepting of females and homosexuals, and often "attacks" them. And makes a habit of pointing out white males in particular and basically doxx's them to make her point across.) *Cough cough* Gosh what a frog in my throat.
And at the moment. The community for Warhammer is.. very mixed and full of anger at GW.
GW has shut down most fan made content, enforced a huge cease n desist campaign against animations and creations n comics by fans, so they could literally take folks hard work, to put onto their own app.
(To be fair. It is THEIR IP. And they have every legal right to say this is ours. And most fanimations refused to make any money on most platforms, to let GW collect all moneys from it, getting paid in donations.(
But they never spent a penny on any creators content, not to reimberse them for their hard work, made them legally sign over n hand over all their animations, comics n stuff and said no one is allowed to do it.
And if someone did. Within 48 hours theres a cease n desist sent their way.
And this pissed off the entire community for wh40k.
Whilst also raising prices for everything, and their app is pretty expensive too.
GW Has a very long history of doing this, but this was when they hit the total scorch earth button and they've tripled down on it since.
So many fanimations were deleted and in the receases of the internet, because so many content makers refused to let Gw mooch off their hard work, and not even be given a single penny or thank you.
A middle finger and told "Give me your lunch money nerd."
It also doesnt help they've hired some very.. questionable people.
And supposedly (rumoured. Theres no proof yet. But speculation) that GW has been attempting to enforce a "more open mindset to LGBT and female" manners. And looking to make Warhammer more open and friendly to them..
In a game which whole theme is dark regressionism, in the most depraved and evil settings that can be legally sold and released to the public.
Needs to be "more open and friendly"
    To modern politics
I love wh40k. Its such an over the top, dark and doomed setting unlike anything I ever read and seen and witnessed. And wasted so much of my life listening and learning and reading..
This isn't meant to be political commentary, but a warning. GW isn't to be trusted.
