      One of the best Q&A's , great questions from your subscribers and logical and sound advice given. For those that don't know; I think it works out close to 10hrs of labour per cord....right from felling to stacking.....that's splitting by hand, one person...I usually work a few hours here and there...I'm make sure I'm 2 years ahead of the game, no more than that as you don't want your hardwood completely dried out....12-21% moisture content is perfect for my area and my stove....I'm not sure about all the pine/lodge pole you will probably be burning.

    You guys are doing a great job. I've lived in AK for 37 years. ( I'm 59 YO) I just bought 140 acres outside of Big Lake.. 4 mile from the end of the road. I'm just getting started with off grid. I've watched a lot of people try and live the off grid life over the years.and fail .. Mostly due to lack of common sense. Maybe we'll run into each other in Wasilla? I'm living in Anch. full time for now..weekends at the cabin. Until I can retire. 1-2 years.
    Have a cozy cabin and all that I need at this point. but always another project.....
    You guys will be just fine!

I live in a climate that like yours is demanding. Stores are miles away , shipping is tough, . Temps. get to -50 . ATB

    I’m coming up on my two year anniversary of moving from a townhouse in the Philadelphia suburbs to the side of a mountain homestead in New England. It’s encouraging to go back and watch these older videos and to hear you did this for 4 years before making this move. It gives me some grace in my learning curve. But necessity breeds creativity and I’ve been amazed at how much I can do with sticks and jute twine!

    I would recommend installing a wind mill to supplement your solar panels in producing you electrical needs. This wind mill will make power during the night and during the days without sun.

    • @charlenekociuba7396
      @charlenekociuba7396 3 роки тому

      Yeah but they cost a lot of money to buy and install. Is the Federal gov offering tax incentives for that? NYS does I have not seen even one of them in any footage in Alaska. It may just be too cold or damp. Research this well.

    • @pierregodin1668
      @pierregodin1668 3 роки тому

      @@charlenekociuba7396 What i have used to install my wind mill is with an old television antenna tower. I got for free and only had to adapted the head of the tower to receive the wind mill.Wind mills are sold with different capacity and a big variety of prices. I think it completes the solar panel since here in Quebec Canada the winters are long. If you want to see my install send me a E-mail at pjegodin@hotmail.com and i will send you pics.

    I realize at the time this video was made, theres snow, but I learned, always take a flash light to the out house, one night, there was a copperhead eating a mouse at the door, and where I worked there was an out house, and the chickens would get down in the hole, and when you set down, its not what you would want to happen

    Thankyou, you two teach me almost every vedio. Great ideal of buying vehicle instead of a uhaul! I've wanted to live in Alaska most of my adult life. Off grid in Oklahoma and I love it but realize Alaska would be a big upgrade in everything especially cutting firewood. I still do at my age but really it would double or triple. I cant tell you how blessed you are to have each other and you working together in joint effort. Alot of couples work against each other or one has to bear the lion's load alone. I pray for constant love and unity and strength & divine protection over you two, your animals and all home, buildings & equipment.

    Dude as a kid I used to watch TV all day every day. Didn't really learn how to fix a car, change a tire, or learn many other valuable skills that are essential for survival.
    Yeah I'm in my early twenties now and have a strong desire to live off the grid and rely on almost no one, and if possible, literally no one else for my survival and sustenance. UA-cam and TV are SUCH HUGE wastes of time! I really want live simply.

    • @jalenejohnson8484
      @jalenejohnson8484 2 роки тому

      Joel, UA-cam and TV are fantastic tools… but as with any tool… it can be wasted. You’re the one with the power to watch what you want! I can’t tell you how liberating it was for me to realize that…. For example one can watch endless cat videos or instead learn how to butcher a pig! So glad I started making better choices and found Simple Living Alaska

    I live in N.W. Montana, and there are a lot of bears, and usually they run when they see people. I ran into a mama and 3 cubs along a remote mountain road. Luckily I was in my vehicle, so no fear, but I could clearly see the mama about to charge me, as I sped away. Funny is one of my neighbors (lives in washington, visits a couple times in the summer) is deathly afraid of bears, and wonders how I can even sleep. She thinks bears will open my front door and pounce on me in my bed while I am asleep.

      Speaking of bird feeders…. Eric and Ariel, your squirrel/bird feeder made with your Oregon plates might attract bears 🐻. So thankful you have guns but also don’t get too “comfortable” and forget to be aware. I have selfish reasons for trying to keep you safe. It’s narcissistic really because you’re my favorite channel and I want to see lots more videos. 😉

    I enjoyed your answers and I have another question: is it easy to make friends? And do Alaskan residents who have lived there a long time treat you as newbies or differently or do they even know you just arrived this year? Oh more questions for next question video: what do you plan to do with your new property other than cut 8 cords of wood? Isn’t there a cabin there? Do you ever stay there? That’s it for now. Love your channel and your way of life.

      Susanne Galligan, thanks :) We both agree folks here are friendly but probably notice we are newbies. We are planning to put a cabin on the new property, currently it is an empty parcel.

    My biggest question: how to avoid Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in the winter months? Living on the ID/southeast WA border, I still am negatively affected and have trouble with depression during winter. I don't take pharmaceuticals.

    Great Q&A... LOL the out takes were funny. There is nothing wrong with showing your mistakes. Oh and the bears, ya, you haven't seen any cause they are sleeping... LOL now come spring I would carry to the outhouse and be cautious. Bears wake up around the middle to end of April into the first part of May. Males usually come out first and then the females with cubs come out later... Having an early spring like we are may make them get up sooner... Their normal foods wont be available so having bees out there the bears can smell them and may frequent you more than you wish. Lots of remote bee keepers put up an electric fence around the bee hives. I believe the guy that has over 100 hives in Big Lake surrounds them with a hot wire as well. One or 2 good zaps on the nose and the bears will leave them alone. (Sixth Ave outfitters in Anchorage carries a small set up for hunters to encircle their camp with a hot wire to keep out a curious bear for a couple hundred) or they use to anyway...

      AK Washkeeton, appreciate the tips about the bears and hot wire. That is still a concern of mine. We will be lining the garden, trees and greenhouse with electric fencing for moose, haven't decided yet for sure on bees and chickens.

      @@SimpleLivingAlaska If your planting Apple trees I would suggest a way to keep the moose out... in the winter and early spring apples ferment that have stayed on the trees and or ground then your dealing with a drunk moose if they get into them. They can jump pretty high to get over fairly tall fences as well. Something I forgot to add above make sure to gather up all your moose poop and lay it somewhere to dry so that you have it for your bees when you get the hives up...(a smokers use wood, winter moose poop is digested willows and very woody. Dry it and never have to purchase wood for your smoker. The stuff worked great when I had bees.) We were in your neighborhood today... or a bit farther out anyway... Stopped to see if we got a squirrel... LOL

I also really like a lot of the music you use on your programs especially one guy that was singing while you were showing aerial shots of snow covered trees. Some how I'd love to find out who that is....stay cool you two (not temperature wise lol)
