  • We head out into the Alaskan wilderness with the iconic moose as our target, and although we fall short as this month long hunting season leaves us with no meat, we remain grateful to take away the memories of an incredible experience.

When my grandparents and great grandparents homesteaded in Alaska in the 1920s, the men all went off to hunt moose and left the women at home with the children. They came back unsuccessful which meant they might starve in the winter. But while they were gone, my great grandmother shot a huge bull moose in their front yard. Great family story.

You nailed it on the head when you said you felt like you were moving to much. Now that you have found your spots stick to them and call. Early season stay away from cow calling, use lots of scraping and racking. Then a few grunts. Later season is when you can get them to respond a lot with cow calls. I don't know your situation and how far you'd like to travel but there is no size limits in the interior. And look into caribou tags or hunts. Sometimes a lot easier. Enjoying your videos.. good luck.

Favorite part of the video not because it happened to you but because I've been in that place where everything just goes wrong.. enjoyed the scenery and appreciate that you show your failures as well as success.

Eric bring a boat anchor with you. Get the type that you can stick in the mud out in front of your machine and then winch to it. Works great

Thanks for sharing the beautiful scenic areas in Alaska. The hunting may have not gone your way, but imo it’s always an adventure when your out and about. Getting stuck in mud is not only an adventure, but a lesson in knowing your surroundings in each season and the possibilities of what to expect next time. Good luck on your next hunting trip.

Funny you mentioned the cow moose sounded like a chainsaw as when I used to work in the bush after an hour of cutting I would look up and many times there would be a bull moose standing off in the distance, they are curious creatures by nature...Best of luck next year....and another great video.

Crazy beautiful scenery and filming you guys. That six wheeler was handling some tough terrain. How cool to be able to drive it right from your cabin and not have to haul it to the trail. T-shirt weather? I was wondering if it got cold where you are at until I saw your snow footage. We went from 60 degree days to 40 degrees in a hurry. What a great adventure and learning experience. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks!

Glad to see you both back! I’d been wondering how things were going. Bummer about not bagging a moose, but as you said, it takes practice and learning. You sure seem to be very determined and persistent people to put all that time and effort into hunting and everything else. Awesome 6 wheeler by the way - and excellent videography. Cheers from Australia. Regards, Jeff. 👍😀

Can you guys stake out a base camp for next year and stage supplies going into hunting season, or is that not permitted? I have never hunted Moose, but I have heard they are really hard. I look forward to your upcoming videos. Keep up the awesome work! You guys are great! :0)

Stormy Tuesday we may be looking at doing something like that in the future. We left our dogs at home and didn't want to find someone to care for them if we were gone for more than a day (and to take care of the chickens) for this season but making a camp would have been much wiser 😀

Hey youngins..... taking two "small" moose horns or 2X4 2 foot long hard wood with cloth wrapped handles (increases vibration effect) have done these things personally & they worked..... plus a small voice cone for calls10" lip 12" long to a 3" mouth piece amplifies sounds greatly.....also can be handmade easily..... tin, aluminum, plastic, thick cardboard....good hunting next year... Nice, people see people with moose, caribou and don't realize how the roads or better, trails are to get to the great hunting spots... they don't know about the mud, quicksand, thick low brush, or fast rivers... Thanks for posting this... for those who do watch it will give them a realistic view. My daughter and her hubby had to walk out 6 miles after they stuck their ATV in a mud bog like that one... a large portion of the walk was just that deep thick mucky mud. Sorry you all didn't get your moose...

I just came across ur videos & enjoying watching your lifestyle. I'm from the mid-eastern region of the lower 48, Ik during the season for deer, I would make sure my tags covered a doe or buck...for me it's always been about harvesting for food, not a trophy like so many sports hunters out there. I feel if that's all they want they shouldn't be hunting. But that's my opinion, I think it should be for survival. I'm sorry that you both were unsuccessful this year. Next year I hope goes well for you. You can be like me...as long as it's legal male, female, & in last hope a yearling, I take my first shot cuz to me its about my family's dinner table & survival.

Two suggestions. A cool moose call I learned from a very remote Athabascan Elder in the 1970's and another about black bear meat. So first-off it's better to be very very far away from your ATV. This trick depends on a slu, a big puddle or pond or lake (most running water won't work) and of course being wind-wise to the moose area your targeting. Be able to hide also. You can bring a collapsable bucket, but the natives I was around just carried a bucket; this is mostly a bull call. You take the bucket and fill it and then slowly pour the water out into the body of water trying to make the sound of a cow peeing; of course it helps it you've heard this before but a logical guess will often work. And of course you can't repeat the pours close together time-wise - duhhhh!
A caution some newbies over look on black bear hunting is avoid bears near fish areas we call fish-bears - that meat is mostly un edible but fine for dogs. But for my bucks my favorite roast of all times is a berry-n-grass black bear. Plus IF it's legal where you are sometimes yes other times no - Peanut Butter is one mean bear-bait. Put lots of garlic on top and onions but most important finely chopped celery (lots) and roast elevated above bottom of pan (Cast Iron dutch Oven sitting on your wood stove at low heat for HOURS till you can put a table-knife into it and turn the knife with close to ZERO torgue - that meat will just literally fall apart and melt so so tasty into your mouths. Once again you folks were already Alaskans way BEFORE you ever even thought of moving here - but your HOME now and best wishes.

Another great video! Those Polaris six wheelers are not known for dependability .... I would not take one out without another wheeler to tow it back... Look for a late 90s Suzuki 300 King quad 4 wheeler... Or a 250 Suzuki quad runner... There simply amazing for pulling logs, moose, and they have low, med and high range, with manual locking front differential... But the best thing is they Never brake down and will not leave you thirty miles out in the woods... Going out in the bush with just one vehicle in Alaska is not a great idea... Bad things can happen very fast, and very unexpectedly...
One more thing. For the cost of hunting moose, bear, sheep, caribou,,, you could buy and eat prime rib daily!!! Lol

Polaris is a good machine but it won't hold up in hard use. Broken axles and bent A arms are par. Go to 6 or 10 ply tires. I get mine from tire buyer. com. I went to 14" wheels but the 6wheeler probably won't allow that. Yamaha or Honda will serve you better than Polaris and a good other choice is Textron{Arctic Cat}. They aren't fancy but they are bullet proof tough.

If it was me I would look for an old argo or other 6x6 or 8x8. Even better would be an old coot ATV as they are absolutely reliable. There are plans to build one for yourself with modern materials that can be gotten from any farm supply store. They are not as fast but will carry as much as the Polaris and have only a 6 to 10 hp brigs/honda type engine. They are very fuel-efficient. The other thing I would recommend would be a rokon 2 wheel ATV pulling a clamshell single wheel trailer sleep/rest in and haul out the moose. It will carry both of you and cargo. There are other designs that fold out to a 6x8 floor and a tent.

You 2 gave it a good try. Try to find a area less traveled and do more walking calling and waiting. if it was easy everyone would be doing it. 6X6 is better than a 4x4. They all break stuff but Polaris is better at breaking than others . LOL

I saw this UA-cam Channel from Australia, where this guy used a product to put under your wheels if you got stuck. They're called "Maxtrac" $300. A little pricey for the average off roader. That muck you were in, sh.. .
