Grandmaster Jean De LaValette, the Knights Hospitaller and the Great Siege of Malta 1565

- The Knights Hospitaller, or Knights of St. John were a military religious order founded in the Holy Land in the 11th Century. Initially they ran a series of hospitals, but eventually they began to escort and protect pilgrims. Upon the expulsion of all crusaders from the Holy Land, they eventually made their way to Cyprus, then Rhodes, which they lost to the Ottomans after a valiant resistance.
Almost extinct, but their maritime skills desperately needed by civil war torn Christian Europe to protect its vulnerable Mediterranean coast, they were given Malta as a base, which in 1565 was to become to the Ottomans what Stalingrad was to the Germans in WW2.
This video documents the obscure origins of the Knights of Malta as they had come to be known; their withdrawal from the levant following the failure of the crusades and their eventual triumph and unifying effect on Europe in the defence of Malta against the greatest armada and amphibian invasion in history till D-Day. Their leader- John Parisot de Valette was a charismatic, brilliant commander who though flawed and all too human, studied his enemy in minute detail and understood both the gravity of the situation he faced as well as the heavy responsibility of duty he was burdened with. He was able to convince both soldiers and commoners alike to rally to his cause, to suffer the greatest bombardment any city had ever suffered (till WW2) and yet stand their ground and even take the initiative against an enemy that outnumbered them over 10:1.
Europe, torn asunder by the wars of the Reformation and highly vulnerable to the seemingly undefeatable Ottoman empire suddenly paused in their fratricidal carnage to stand in awe of De Valette and his knights of St John as they stood alone to hold back the tide of Muslim expansion.
Born into wealth, he gave it up for the glory of joining the Hospitallers. As a young man he was a courageous and valiant soldier; middle aged he was a competent and shrewd administrator and commander - enslaved and tortured as a prisoner of war, yet using that as an opportunity to study his enemy's language and tactics; till finally as an old man, he became a fearless hero who saved his order, and arguably, all of Europe from becoming over-run when other men his age were in their dotage. Such a man is a worthy individual for us to take lessons from in an example of calmness under fire, planning and strategy and courage to face overwhelming odds with devotion to duty and resignation.

OK PUNTERS! in response to your comments about the soundtrack, I've re-rendered the video with much lower music and uploaded it onto my new channel - "Heroes and Legends documentary channel", which you can see in my subscribed section, or just look it up. I've also acknowledged the comments surrounding the debate on whether the Grandmaster's proper name was "de Valette or de la Valette" and for sake of formality I have updated the video texts to reflect the more formal rendition. Please visit and let me know if that makes you happier! I've also uploaded a more documentary style of the Hercules video, and I've just uploaded part 1 of my new 2 part series on General Jose de San Martin - the True Liberator of South America. Please let me know your thoughts, and subscribe to the new channel for updates. The reason I set up a new channel was to cater to those of you who may like my documentaries, but perhaps don't care for the more personal development style of videos I post here. Of course, you're more than welcome to subscribe to both channels, I'd love to make great content for you either way! Cheers, and thanks for all your support!
Jean de Vallette is one of my all time heroes. A man you could truly say changed the course of history just like Jan Sobieski at the second siege of Vienna or Sir Sydney Smith. A very authoritative and well researched video, I enjoyed watching it as well as learning some new facts about the great man himself. Well filmed and fitting music.
Thanks so much for your kind feedback! I'm working on a new set of documentaries on Jose de San Martin - the true liberator of South America. I think you'd like him too. I'll be posting it on a new channel I've called Heroes and Legends documentary channel over the next few weeks, so stay tuned and I'll let you know on here when its ready. I appreciate your viewing my content!
Oh the humanity.
I wish they taught all this true history in schools in the uk !!
Jan Sobieski didn't change shit it was Eugene of Savoy who damaged the Turks most at that time. Sobieski couldn't even march through Moldovia and only locals and Crimean Turks stopped them, not even the main Ottoman army.
Simply WOW!! I am here in st John's street as a shop owner, looking towards St John's cathedral inspired and so humbled watching your work. I hope history will be taught to the younger generations to come as I was taught about the Great siege back in school in Cottonera.!! Thanks and big thumbs up.!!
Thanks so much for your kind words! I loved visiting your country, its wonderful people and its incredibly rich history - I'm hoping to put together material for a documentary of the neolithic culture that disappeared without a trace - so many questions left unanswered! Hats off to Mr. Allan Kalamir's well documented account of The Great Siege of Malta.
Indeed, the background sound could be turned down a notch or two.
One constructive comment I would like to make, is that the 49th Grand Master's name is constantly mentioned as De Valette, which has been suggested had his preference by being called that, for whatever reason.
Nevertheless, his noble family name was De La Valette.
As this great clip has him featured as the main character, the presentation would at least be even more complete, if mention would be made of this fact.
@@paulrenardeldelavalette6014 Thanks for your kind words - and in acknowledgement of your (and several others') comments, I have re-rendered the video with much lower background music and uploaded it onto my new channel "Heroes and Legends documentary channel". I also appreciate the debate over the "de la Valette" issue and have altered text boxes within the video to acknowledge the more formal family spelling. Hopefully to the greater satisfaction of all viewers. I've also re-rendered my Herakles video to be more documentary - like; and have uploaded part 1 of my new 2 part documentary on General Jose de San Martin. I hope you enjoy the new channel- which will serve to host my more documentary type videos, as opposed to this one which is primarily personal development oriented. I'd appreciate your feedback!
Thank you for sharing one of Malta's most noble moments.
Incredible country with an incredible history! Thanks so much for taking the time to view my material, and for leaving your thoughts!
Last year I visited Malta after years of reading about the knights and Jean de Valet. Being able to see his tomb seeing the city that bears his name was incredible, like touching the past with one hand and the present with the other.
The best book I read about this incredible story is the Great Siege, by Ernle Bradford. Congratulations on recalling this very important moment.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the book reference. Thanks for taking the time to view my material!
Bradford also wrote another excellent book on the siege of Malta during WW11. Nicholas Monsarett wrote a brilliant novel, The Kapilan of Malta which includes a history of this amazing island from the neolithic age to WW11.

Excellent doc. Always good to get more than one voice on the major events in history -- and there are many on YT. As an aside, I heard a story many years ago that the St. John's Ambulance Brigade descended from the Knights of St. John. Their eight-pointed black & white star certainly appears identical to that on the vehicle of the final scene.
Thanks for the positive feedback! Yes, the ambulance brigade is itself the direct descendant of the original knights, though today they are a purely humanitarian medical order. They mention their origins on their (Australian) website-

@@triariusproject4898 Thank you, I didn't expect a response after being 2 weeks late to the party! Taking my cue from your commenter, Bogbanter, it was this very subject that sparked my interest in general history -- regrettably late in life. Found in a local flea-market here in London, it was "The Great Seige of Malta, 1565", by Ernle Bradford. This was followed by Balbi's eye-witness account. Also, thank-you for the link to the St. John's Ambulance Brigade which has clarified for me how they came into being -- as inspiration rather than direct descent. I concur with all your commenters, we owe The Knights so much and may one day come to regret not taking them as our inspiration.
@@IUsedToBeSomeoneElseX Excellent sources- and yes, I really believe they changed the course of European history. Its tempting to play saints and devils- society seems to inclined to it now more than ever; so for myself I think the best we can do is to take lessons from their courage, resolve and streadfastness to duty. Critics might accuse them of many things, but being wishy-washy is not one of them. That at least, is an example worth studying. Cheers!

Jean Parisot de la Valette, to give his full name.
Yes, I was aware of the ongoing debate about the "La" between the various groups. In Fort St. Elmo, plaques read De Valette, while in the Armoury museum they use De La Valette. Apologies to anyone offended by my settling on the shorter version. Thanks for your comments, its important for everyone to see the deeper stories!

The video contains several historical inaccuracies but it was a good effort.
I'm an amateur doing the best I can and learning as I go. Hopefully they get better as time goes on. Thanks!
Great factual presentation. Only is made a regular mistake in using medieval notations: 500 Noble Hospitaler knights ( ALL ORDER KNIGHTS!!!!) meant 5000 troops, consisting of squires, sergeants, inferior knights. This meant that the defending army consisted of 9000 man, 3000 in each fort. This combines perfectly with the fact that more then thousand died and 1500 Hospitaler were executed after conquering the first Fort...... and the succesful defence of the two remaining Forts...... The relieve force consisted of 8000 man, which was a right estimate....... The Ottoman army was probably between 40-80000 men (the number was willingly reduced to minimize supplies)
That's an interesting observation - thanks for pointing it out. I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
@@triariusproject4898 It is difficult to imagine nowadays, but in the past were only counted the warriors of noble birth (f.i. the 300 Spartans were probably 5000 men)

Its an incredible and inspiring story, which is why i made a film on it, having visited both Malta and Rhodes, as well as the Holy land. Thanks so much for your encouraging feedback!
Funny how you never mentioned that after the Maltese welcomed the Knights of St John in Malta with open arms they never had the curtesy to make not ONE Maltese a Night of St John
That's a good point. My understanding is that the Maltese didn't welcome them with open arms at all, and antagonisms continued for centuries. The knights themselves never intended Malta to be their permanent home, hoping to recapture Rhodes and other strongholds some day. Prior to the arrival of the knights, the island was under the jurisdiction of Charles V (Spain and Sicily) - who also gave them Tripoli to hold (they were especially unwelcome there as you might imagine). He gave the knights rights "over the life and death of its inhabitants"(Castillo 1993), and they sidelined the Consiglio popolare, which basically fell apart. Why the Maltese nobility were excluded from joining is a mystery to me. Certainly it makes no sense in practical terms. The people's only protection was the church, whose bishop was independent of the Order, and had some benefit from the imposition of the Inquisition on the island, which could block the Grand Master's activities to a degree. There is so much fascinating history in that small island - just the fact of their overthrowing the catholic Knights for a revolutionary French republic, then shortly after, overthrew them for British Protestant protectorate, before finally managing to secure independence. Amazing people. Thanks so much for viewing my content, and for taking the time to make an important observation!

The other channel is where I keep all my documentaries now. Hopefully will be more tolerable. Thanks so much for viewing my work, and offering your feedback.
As far as I know St. Elmo had already been built and la Valette only fortified it before the Ottoman invasion.
Imagine doctors, priests and charity workers;
Now imagine them wearing full battle regalia;
Sprinkle in some unbreakable resolve;
And put them all on an island in the middle of a sea of enemies;
And that's the Knights Hospitaller.
Yes, hard to get your head around it! Thanks for dropping by!
Fear naught
Indeed!
De is the possessive in French and every noble man has it in his name for most of them were named after their own lands and possessions. De is like of in English so his name is Jean Parisot de la Valette.
Interesting documentary, unfortunately largely ruined by totally unnecessary and irritating background music and choral singing which drowns the commentary, distracts the viewer and makes her or him struggle to follow. Why not come up with a new version minus the background music?
Thanks very much for your feedback - will do for my next one.
People unfamiliar with this era of history do not realize how pivotal it was for the Christian faith. Were it not for the courage of those like Jean De Valette, Europe would be a very different place today. After the conquest of Constantinople the Ottomans achieved victory after victory pushing deep into Europe. They came close to capturing Vienna twice (1529 & 1683) and held Budapest and Belgrade at times. They even came close to conquering Rome; in 1480, Mehmet II (who had conquered Constantinople 27 years earlier) invaded Italy with the intention on claiming the last original Christian Patriarchate (Rome) for Islam, and turning St. Peter's into a stable for the Ottoman cavalry. (The other four patriarchates were/are Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch, and Constantinople.)
The Ottoman army besieged the city of Otranto, on the boot heel of the Italian peninsula. Although the city fell, the defender's effort was just as vital and inspiring as the Siege of Malta. Eight hundred of the surviving men of Otranto were ordered to give up their faith and convert to Islam. They refused and were beheaded. They became martyrs ands their bones can be seen in Otranto's cathedral today. The city became a trafficking hub for Christian slaves until it was retaken by Christian armies, with Mehmet II dying soon after.
Today Christianity faces different yet equally serious threats. Internal division and complacency is rotting it from within. There is pressure to compromise and alter teachings to adapt to social trends. In many countries Christians are still persecuted, yet in Europe and elsewhere others take their religious freedom for granted. They forget the struggles and sacrifices of earlier Christians, who carried the message despite persecution from enemies like the Roman Emperors and the Ottoman Turks.
Sadly, we do not learn from history. While Catholic and Orthodox were fighting, the Ottomans took Christian Byzantium. Then as they continued to expand, Catholics and Protestants were at war. It required moments like the Siege of Malta and Christians like Jean de LaValette to make Christian Europe wake up to the greater threat.
Just last year, the Hagia Sophia, Christianity's greatest church for a thousand years, was made a mosque again. Although the Patriarch of Constantinople still resides in Constantinople/Istanbul, he and the 300 million Orthodox cannot worship in their ancestral church which was taken from them through bloodshed. In 1971 Turkey shut down the Halki Seminary, the only Greek Orthodox theological school in Turkey, of which the current Patriarch is an alumni. Despite pleas from world leaders, Turkey refuses to reopen it. In recent years many significant historic Greek, Armenian and Syriac churches in Turkey have been reopened as mosques. We need Christians like Jean de La Valette today because the current Christian leaders are not protecting the faith.
Thankyou for your considered perspective. If history teaches us anything, its that all empires eventually fall, usually from internal decay, long before any external threat finally seals its fate. In that sense, Islam has suffered from much of the same internal strife, dynastic warfare and cultural challenges that Christianity has, just that it's running 600 years behind the Christian experience. The Islamic world went from unbeatable expansionist empire spanning from Morocco to China in the 12th century, only to end up carved up into numerous colonial backwaters by the end of world war 1. It now seems to be undergoing a rennaissance, just like Europe did in the 1500's, but it will also undergo the inevitable fate of all other societies. It's all a matter of perspective, but history, like the seasons tends to be cyclical in nature. At least that seems to be my perception. What will follow for Christianity? After every winter, the spring. All depends on where you think it is right now. Thanks so much for viewing my content and adding your perspective!
@@triariusproject4898 I agree with everything you've said. I would only add that the fate of religions and civilizations are no accident. Christianity and Islam did not gain their phenomenal growth and expansion with complacency. The apostles who travelled the known world, the men and women who died for their faith, the secular leaders who put aside political rivalry to unite against a greater threat, earned Christianity the place it has in the world today. A similar statement could be said about Islam.
There is always a fear that if institutions-religious or commercial-do not adapt and stay relevant to changing social attitudes, they will die. I have often wondered about this and am curious as to your opinion.
The Catholic Church has made some significant changes over the years, including Vatican II in the 60's. It has earned a lot of criticism from not just Orthodox but many Catholics, who see these changes as weakness and heresy. On the other hand the Orthodox Church has maintained the original Nicene creed and everything else from the earliest teachings. (I am neither Orthodox or Catholic.) If you look at the numbers, Catholics are the largest Christian denomination so in that sense they are "winning". I have heard others say that having the central authority of the Pope, as opposed to the many autocephalous Orthodox churches, is a factor. What do you think?
I think you're right, adaptation seems to be the key to survival for any living system, institutions included. The currency of adaptation here is relevance, as far as religious organisations go. When an organisation's exercise of temporal power overtakes its role in the provision of hope, comfort and relief, then it sows the seeds of its own eventual demise, as people begin to seek those needs in other arenas. The typical reactionary suppression of it only makes things accelerate. Certainly the Hospitallers eventually fell victim to the issue of irrelevance (on a number of occasions, finally ending with Napoleon).
As for your consideration of the contrast between centralised power versus decentralised (or federated), this has long been a vexed question, especially in democratic systems of representative government. One only needs to observe the disastrous history of South American politics (see my 2 part series on General San Martin, el Libertador; on my other channel- Heroes and Legends Documentary Channel - ua-cam.com/video/G7HbH9dgu_M/v-deo.html (especially in part 2) to see the conflicting ideologies of the unitario and federalista philosophies at loggerheads. The transformation of a spiritual movement into a conquistadorial one, then to one of corruption and declining relevance, to inevitable collapse (or revolutionary rebirth) alludes to my earlier thoughts on the cyclical nature of history. On that other channel I also touch on the subject in the video on the Perfect Medieval Storm. I think that your valid observation of the rise and fall of civilisations carries this inherent characteristic. A good book on that subject is "the fourth turning" by Strauss and Howe, which I found interesting, for its challenge to our current view of sociological time as purely linear.
@@triariusproject4898 Thank you for such a thoughtful and considered answer! I look forward to checking out that book and your other videos.
Very interesting, but the same soundtrack for nearly an hour kept it from being enjoyable for me.
Fair enough - I'm still learning, and will post it up with audio changes on a dedicated channel for documentaries, stay tuned, will advise
Great job. Congratulations. How's that for poor little Malta pulling the chestnuts out of the fire for all of Christendom? Now, how about producing another documentary about Malta, doing the same, by frustrating Germany's dream of recreation a Third Reich?
It would definitely be an amazing story- among many others on that incredible island! I'm thinking about doing one on the fascinating Neolithic culture that pre-dated Stonehenge first though! Thanks so much for your kind comments, and for viewing my material. I will be putting my documentaries over onto a new channel so please hit the notification button.
Wasn't it the Templars that Saladin had beheaded after Hattin?
It was both, from my understanding. Thereafter withdrawing jointly to their last coastal fortresses. Thanks so much for viewing my material, and leaving a comment!
@@triariusproject4898 Actually, your channel and video are great! Looking forward to seeing more of your work and content.
All the best!
I’ve got to dump this video because I can’t hear you because of the bloody music
Thanks for your feedback - message received! Still learning, so the next one will be better. I'll try and re-render this one so its easier on the ears and post it on my new channel, so please stay tuned! Thanks for taking the time to offer your thoughts and for viewing my material.
@@triariusproject4898 That’s a very gracious response thank you
Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum"
Dragut looks like Dan Ackroyd lol
Very interesting apart from the hysterical music that grinds as underlay. Almost unbearable.
And what has Humphrey Bogart at 12:35 in a hat and a suit has to do with it?
Thanks for your feedback - others have made the same comment on the music, so next video the soundtrack will be softer I promise! Humphrey Bogart was meant to be a subtle nod to the "Maltese Falcon", a classic film noir. Couldn't help myself...
@@triariusproject4898 ohh , I see -- Actually a very good video and well structured too. If you really will tune down the music I`ll be happy to subscribe for more videos - thank`s for the responce - the Bogard part whent over my head😏👍
Deus Vult.
Madina: “alright listen up. The plan is to waste what little powder we have firing where we can’t possibly hit them in hopes it scares them away.”
This works
Yes, it seems almost comical in retrospect, but I doubt that the defending officers saw the humour in it - at least until their bluff paid off! Thanks for viewing, and leaving your thoughts! I recently put up a dedicated documentary channel called Heroes and Legends Documentary Channel, where I've put up another couple of videos since then, so please take a look and let me know your thoughts!
QEI was a staunch Anglican, Anglican Christians were not protestants. Anglicans had bishops, cardinals and the Nicaean creed. Anglicans were a catholic faith, just not Roman Catholics. Similarly the Russian church are a catholic faith.
Thanks for the correction - I appreciate your taking the time to comment and educate others!
Nerve wracking bg music that belongs in a circus show.
Message received - next one will be better. Thanks for taking the time to view and comment.
