Teach Your Puppy to Come - Puppy Recall Using Prey Drive - Puppy Training

  • The single most important thing you will teach your puppy is the recall or the COME Command. If you want your puppy to be safe, teach him or her how to come to you when you say COME. There are few things as important as making sure that your dog or puppy will come because it can save his life.
    I believe that the recall can be taught through prey, which means using the dog's natural prey drive to get them to Come. I call this the prey recall. There are other methods, but this is the first place to start and is the most reliable method.
    Please watch my other videos on the recall including adult dog recall and puppy recalls.
    I also talk about using the long line to prevent your puppy from failing.

    Question is, how do you do this with a puppy that is past his stage at 5 months old? He’s already at the “running away from me” stage.

    I'm new to your channel but have always loved positive treat training. My latest rescue still needs some work with come but he seems to love me and wants to please. I'm appreciating your tips. I had him at a party with at least 25 people and he walked from one to the next apparently saying, 'hi, I'm Glenn. I'm a good boy! " no barking, no jumping, no stealing food. I was impressed!

    I changed my pup's name (had been "Betty" at the breeders), so the first couple of weeks I would say "Millie" and treat her. Pretty quick she learned to "look me up" when she heard her name. Never even said the word "come" till 6 months, when I started training the formal recall to front sit.

    Just got a 6 month old potcake, hes doing so well! I love teaching him stuff and watching him learn. I've only had him for a month but hes the type of dog that loves to work and please. Hes a little skittish of certain strangers which I believe is because hes unsure of them. I notice it varies, if someone walks in and ignores him hes completely fine and quickly warms up to them. What I've done is hand a guest a treat and they give him a treat every single time the dog walks over to them which creates a positive experience.

    We got Auggie 3 weeks a go yesterday so we didn't have him as a really young puppy. I have been using all of your puppy videos and he is remarkable but he hardly ever wags his tail like I see Dwayne doing. He gets really great treats and I don't work him long -- I even use a timer so that I am sure that I am not frustrating him.

    Come is always the very first thing I teach a dog with one exception my Ruby. The first word she really learned was the word in. She was a year old rescue with absolutely no schooling before I got her she was so wild and crazy she even had a warning on her paperwork to have 2 people handle her. Well the first 2 weeks she escaped 4 times, first 2 times in the first 24 hours. She got like 5 10 minute lessons jumping into the car for the first day. I also did try to teach her to come at first but she is not treat or toy motivated when she is overloaded with new things. She wants to explore everything at mach 4. The 3rd and 4th time she escaped I was able to chase her down with my car pop open the back door and say IN. Super easy recaptures. It took me a bit to teach Ruby a pretty good solid recall thought and still have a bit of issues when cats or those evil squirrels are around. But I do want her to go after the squirrels so she will protect my garden.

    I've trained my dog to come to the middle of my body by luring with a treat like you have shown, but now I want to train a formal front for obedience and I don't know how to fade the lure. If I keep my hands at my sides he goes there. Any suggestions? I was thinking of using a platform.

    • @RobertCabralDogs
      @RobertCabralDogs  4 роки тому +2

      Do it with no treat in your hands. Bring the treat out from behind you after the dog fronts. Also you can put a toy behind you and release the dog through your legs.

    Hi Robert, Can I teach all these commands to Indian Pariah puppy of 2.5 months
    Pls reply

    • @SundaraRamanR
      @SundaraRamanR 5 років тому +2

      Hi Shashank. I too have a puppy who's a Pariah-mix, now 4 months old, and she has learnt this and other commands pretty easily. She's highly food motivated and not very praise-motivated.
      Btw, can I know how much your puppy sleeps per day? Online resources say a puppy should sleep 16 hours or more, but mine only sleeps 12-13 hours maximum, even when tired out. I'm wondering if that's a trait of the Pariah breed, since they didn't have the luxury of a safe home to sleep in, but I'm not sure.

    I have a 10 month old golden retriever, is it too late to correct her unruly behavior? Also, she wags her tail extremely hard when I come home,very painful. is there a corrective action for this?

    • @SergiuSalcau00
      @SergiuSalcau00 5 років тому

      10 month old is still a baby, of course it is not too late. you have to put in the time and give the dog structure. it bothers you that the dog wags her tail ? why do you have her ? you can probably “cut into” her wagging with some commands after you’ve loved her for however long you feel she s worthy of your love 😒

    At what age can you start using a prong color?

    • @RobertCabralDogs

      Depends on the temperament of the puppy. Usually over 6 months.

    • @anette-ze1sf
      @anette-ze1sf 3 роки тому

      would be best if never. I live in Germany, prong collars are forbidden here, so I had to just use the normal leash correction. my dog is already five years old and it still works to teach him things - or to keep him from doing unwanted things.
