Scotty Kilmer I have a 97 Accord that got rained on and drowned a little. I changed the crank position sensor then it worked. However, now when I drive the car, it doesn't go past 3k rpm and at 75 mph it feels like the engine is kicking me back. I changed the spark plugs, oil and oil filter, air filter and did a complete tune up. The check engine light turned on as well showing me the p01361

Scotty Kilmer hey scotty I was in traffic so I was accelerating and stopping as usual with traffic. My car after a while starting hesitating and then the engine seemed to turn off. Turned the vehicle back on and it would do the same thing. Then started accelerating sporadically when I hit the gas pedal. Temp gauges fine. Check engine light started flashing. I eventually let it cool and drove it for another hour and 15 with practically no problems. Any idea of what this could be?

Scotty, been watching you for a while now and want to say thanks for the confidence! You make working on these things seem super simple. Had this exact issue with no codes from the computer. Replaced the plugs and coils and it is running perfect now. :) Just to let you know, I was thinking it was a transmission issue before this video, but that wasn't the case!
Which coils did you use and how much did they run you I have something similar but I wanted to see if I could just replace spark plugs bc coils are like 230 plus 40 for plugs
I know I'm upset. I had shudder problems for nearly 5 years and only used my SUV for short distances. Turns out, one spark plug was bad. 165k miles on a 1998 Toyota landcruiser 4.7L V8. I went ahead and replaced the crankshaft sensor, all 8 spark plugs, all 8 ignition coils, fuel pump, and all 8 fuel injectors. I should replace the fuel filter as well but my SUV runs great now.

Thanks scotty. Just got car back from shop and was worried about fuel pump and other pain in the rear jobs. Checked plugs and one was actually barely on. Easiest fix of the day.
My car was hesitating during acceleration. First they thought it was a vacuum leak so the "fixed" that but it was still hesitating. Dropped it off at the mechanic again today. It was a bad coil. Running great now!
I've replaced the coil pack twice in 12 months. It has four coils in a row mounted on one unit, and this sits directly on top of the spark plugs in the engine block. The spark plugs were changed about 9000 miles ago, along with the fuel filter and other usual filters. The full exhaust system was fitted in September 2013. Engine temps are fine but naturally fuel consumption is terrible at the moment. Diagnostics were carried out earlier this year when the second coil pack was fitted, and no errors were present. There is no dash warning light on at the moment either. The first was a cheap brand (HAAS) and lasted only two weeks. The second was a recommended top brand (BERU) and that lasted about 500 miles. My car was driving to absolute perfection up until December 2014, but since Jan 2015 it has been hell to drive and at times extremely dangerous indeed.
just becaue he made it look simple on video, doesn't mean it is simple. That coil was covered in coolant. That car will probably come back with a blown head gasket. It is a 5.4l piece of shit engine.
I started watching your videos in 2020 and this year, I finally bought my first car; a Pontiac g3 2010. I am going to be doing some work on it this Monday (brake changes, spark plugs and rust cleaning) Your videos have given me some confidence to tackle it but I will also have my dad for help🤣🤣
Love your youtube. I come here for any questions I have about my car. Recently my car was stuttering, engine light on so I had my mechanic tow it. It said it was the spark plugs had worn out and he replaced them. The car was good to go. When I picked it up it wouldn't start, when it did it was stuttering. Down the road the engine light came back on. Now he says its the coil pack that he replaced in the car three years ago. I only drive the car to work so since the replacement I have only added 20,000 miles. I'm here again to see what the deal is and I did get charged $45 for the computer check...the first time. Keep up the videos!
Thanks for letting me know the diagnostic system may not catch a problem a simple tuneup will fix. I used to change plugs out all the time when it was a Plymouth Horizon or Chrysler LeBaron. It was easy and cheap, just four plugs, all lined up under the front of the hood.
Another great video. The tip for making sure the engine is cold is something I hadn't thought of. Just as well I watched your video before touching the plugs! Thanks for making all these great video. You're tutorials are very easy to follow, too.
I called today to ask how much Ford wanted to change spark plugs. He said $512.74. I said $500!!!!!!! To do SPARK PLUGS? I said you are full of it. This isn't a 5 hr job. I then asked what's his hourly rate. He refused to tell me saying "I appears you don't want to pay for my salary, the lights, the mechanics schooling, the janitor, and everything else that goes into running a dealership" and he hung up on me.
@@DomPom719 and? If you don't have the knowledge or experience or confidence to do this, then you should pay someone else, who has. They didn't get that knowledge, confidence, experience for free. Thank you!! I thought so. A short & spark plugs need to be replaced. Haven’t checked but the maintenance guys in my apartment complex laugh at me when I’m working on my 95 Buick park ave. I’m gonna find a place somewhere else to work on it. Where comfortable & put ALL my tools in my truck. Can you believe they laughed & said, “oh, ok” you need to reboot the car’s computer - it worked & even beeped when ALL power drained needed a jump & took 10 mins just to repower. & IT WORKED no problems since!!!
Scotty ur awesome brother.. just wanna say ii stumbled on the channel and from one content creator to another I just wanna say I love the energy .. Your awesome man rock on scotty!!
My car did the same thing but it was the camshaft position sensor. So I went ahead and replaced that but I also went ahead and replaced the spark plugs and the spark plug wires and everything else while I was at it and now it's running like a new car 21 year old car running like a new car. Your videos definitely help me save money. Cuz I know mechanic and I don't know anything until about cars or how to fix them so thank you very much but helping me.
My Lincoln Aviator was shaking badly and had very little power. So I put in new spark plugs and that didn't fix it. My dad then gave it to his friend and said it was the coils four of them went out! My v8 was only running on four cylinders lol. It's gone now but once we fixed it it drove amazing.
Scotty is right about the simplest answer usually being the right answer. For those of you who like tediously long answers, here is another way to say it: Occam's razor - a scientific and philosophic rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities.
Thank you Scotty, you helped helped me out with this exact hesitation problem on my honda fit. Changed the spark plugs and the problem is gone. Cheers!
I absolutely love this guys videos. Even if there isn’t anything wrong with my Jeep, I still watch his videos. He’s easy to understand and follow. And he makes the videos funny
Just had this problem on my Escape V6, the workshop fixed it by changing 2 faulty ignition coils and all the 6 spark plugs, on top of that they also cleaned the MAF sensor and flushed out the air intake system. Now the car runs very well.
Torque wrench is your best friend when dealing with over engineered contraptions. No guessing if it's tightened properly. Sometimes it's worth spending a little to save a lot.
remember, change dark plugs on a cold engine. always. i tried out on a warm one and spark plug snapped and was nightmare to get it out. always do it on a cold engine
This guy is great. Now I need to save for enough to replace spark plugs, coils, intake gaskets, and valve cover gaskets because it’s all in the way on my car and needs to be done also.
Thank you I was seriously debating taking my car to the shop but I’m convinced with my dads help I can do this ahhhhhh THANK YOU !!!! - from a typical girl that doesn’t know anything about cars
The same thing happened to me when I bought a used car and it started hesitating. Two of the four spark plugs were loose. I went ahead and replaced all four as well as one of the coils, and now it runs like brand new.
@@Vids703 coil plugs only last 100,000 kms if there aftermarket sometimes depend the brand, if it's standard coils (factory) will only last 60,000-80,000 kms Best to replace all coils and plugs if you just replace one coil expect the other coils to fail before the one you replaced that's why people normally do all coils and plugs at the same time!
@@kaneclark7171 I’ve seen so many people just replace spark plugs and not the coils and it runs perfect they only change the coils if they see thier is a misfire
@@Vids703 so if you see a heap of people jumping off a bridge you think it's normal and do the same thing? No you use your brains and do the right thing 🤣 being cheap isn't a good thing
Replacing the plugs and coils isn't overly difficult. However, it is more time consuming to find the exact root of the problem than it is to fix the problem. Car manufacturers have added so many useless sensors and electronics that diagnosing car problems has become overly problematic even for licensed professional mechanics. If one has a good general understanding of cars and how cars operate, one can still diagnose car problems the old fashioned way > test drive and eliminate the problem methodologically step by step. Scotty Kilmer is 100% correct. Car hesitation (and misfire) is most likely the result of bad coils. My Rav4 started to show this very problematic symptom about 6 months ago. After replacing the EGR valve, MAF, and checking the (NGK Iridium) spark plugs I decided to test the coils and all coils tested fine on the pin 1 and pin 4. However, at the spark plug end there was no reading thus possibly the coils were bad. I replaced all 4 coils for $84 and problem solved! EGR valve and MAF sensor was also replaced. So for $124 in total car repairs in the last 6 years is pretty darn good! I did notice that on the original coils there were hairline cracks (on all 4 coils) along the length of the shaft of the coil as well. 275,000 km on the original Toyota Denso coils is pretty good! I pretty happy that my older 2002 AWD 2.0 Rav4 is still alive and kicking even in 2023! Hopefully it will last one or two more years....
You are awesome! Your videos have helped me so much and truly you are appreciated. From not knowing a damn thing about my car, I feel more confident anf ask the mechanic questions! Thanks so much keep up the amazing work!
I have a 2010 F150 with the 5.4. I’ve had the stuttering issue for a while now. Could never really pin it down. I decided to buy plugs, haven’t installed them yet but this video helps give me hope my first potential fix is gonna work
thank you so much I knew that's what was wrong with my car but I am not all that good at diagnostics. thank you so much I really wanted to make sure it was not a nothing to serious.
I have chevy beat 2010 that hesitates while accelerating on low rpms.. however it goes off at highspeeds... Can this be ignition coil problem or any other problem? Please suggest shud i change the ignition coil or not...
Scotty I would like to say thank you for what you do you have helped me numerous times with your videos. I hope you tube makes you highly profitable one day
I replace all the plugs and coils with Blue Streak coils, on my 2004 Grand Marquis that had 147,000 miles on it. Still had some missing problems. Took it to Ford. 3 times. First time they said the connector on #5 was bad and they replaced it. They also cleaned the throttle body. Got it back and still had problems. Back to Ford. They said coils on 1, 2, 4 were bad. So went to Oreily's and exchanged them. Still had slight problem. Back to Ford. They said the coils on 1, 2 and 4 were not right, they they were hitting on the fuel rail. So back to Oreily's. Ended up replacing the mas air flow sensor and the idle sensor myself. Still was not running great. So I remembered Scotty talking about a bad battery not having enough power to run everything, but would start the car okay. So went to Oreilly's and had the battery checked, it was a 4 year old Interstate and it checked bad. Replaced it. After 2 or 3 days the car was running great for the past 3 weeks. When I took the car to Ford the first them, they pointed out that the intake manifold was leaking and I should get it replaced and keep an eye on the leaking for now. So I took it to Ford, Blue Springs Ford in blue Springs Missouri to get the manifold replace. Total including labor and parts around $1286.00. Picked it up yesterday and after warming up it started running lousy like before. So I turned around and took it back to Ford and left it. Today April 7th 2021, they called this after noon and told me all the coils needed to be replaced. They replace one on #7 and said it was running better. they wanted $800 to replace them all. In spite of the fact I told them mall had been replaced and the car was running great the past 3 weeks, until they replace the manifold. Considering the age of the car, could removing all the wiring and everything else to replace the manifold, could the wiring or connectors have been damaged due to the age of the car?
Hey scotty ive been watching your videos for a while now and i just want to say thanks brother. You rock. I love how you explain what and why and how to fix things. Helped me so much and saved me alot of money ontop of giving me confidence to work on my own car. Much love brother. Please keep the videos coming
My car was in the mechanics for 3 whole weeks and they couldn’t find out what the issue was smh they went through everything. They were saying everything was ok, spark plugs, ignition coils etc... Until my uncle came along and said my car literally had no transmission oil in the gearbox. This means no power to accelerate also. He just added 2 litres of transmission oil and that was it lol Saved me so much $$$$$$ it worked for me so who knows, it might work for your cars because my car is finally back to normal lol
You are just going to destroy the coil packs by not changing sparkplugs. when the gap get bigger the coil have to make a bigger spark/harder to park and that shortens the coil life.
Double Iridium or platinum are pretty common plugs these days from the factory. As long as the engine doesn't start running too rich or lean they'll last a looong time.
DE Nichols Double (as in both poles are made of it) Iridium and platinum don't erode much and are good at self cleaning in the temperatures inside the combustion chamber. But I don't advocate using anything more then what the factory spec is. The entire engine these days is designed around the ignition system in an EFI car and 'upgrading' spark plugs is at best a waste of money and in certain cases actually more harm then good with wasted spark designs.
I know I'm in the minority, but I believe spark plugs are under-rated. Why? So the spark plug companies can sell more of them! My 1992 3.3 Dodge Grand Caravan has more than 235,000 miles on the original plugs. Sure I've inspected them on occasion and cleaned and re-gapped them. The van runs smooth and returns 25 mpg on the highway. I believe the advent of electronic ignition has played a part in extending spark plug life. Call me a cheapskate, but if I was working on that Mustang, I would have cleaned and re-gapped the plugs, cleaned the corrosion off the one corroded coil-on-plug, and called it a day. If that didn't fix the problem, I would have changed out the bad coil-on-plug. I think Scotty will agree that the contaminated coil-on-plug was causing the hesitation.
Hey Scotty I really like your vids! I got a '12 Q5 with 117000 Km on it. The previous owners didnt do much maintenance on it besides changing the oil and filter. So i decided to go ahead and change out the sparks, all the filters, changed out the oil, timing belt. Just the basic stuff that probably are worn out. Now, when I drove on the highway I notice there was some minor hesitation and jerking when I accelerated 60 km/hr up. What do you think is the problem?
Thanks for the input, Scotty. A set of low resistance MSD ign. wires and a hotter than stock coil solved the off idle dead spot on my 93 Ford F-150 equipped with the 300 cubic inch inline 6. Of course I changed the spark plugs, too. I had to buy the ignition wire in bulk length from Summit Racing along with the terminal ends to make the wire set since there are no good quality, low resistance ignition wire sets available for this engine, only the crappy original equipment wire sets that are junk.

Keep up the videos!
you r a good man doing the videos to help ppl ty for everything you had did for us
Thanks for letting me know the diagnostic system may not catch a problem a simple tuneup will fix.
It’s 2023 and the world is a better place with you in it Scotty.
He's right tho. Do it yourself or pay someone to do it. You're paying for a service and that service costs.
@@big-smoke-rca year old comment would be 700 now 💀
@@DomPom719 and? If you don't have the knowledge or experience or confidence to do this, then you should pay someone else, who has.
They didn't get that knowledge, confidence, experience for free. Thats what you're paying for. Otherwise, just do it yourself.
If the labour was worthless, you wouldn't even be watching this video because you'd have fixed it already.

Yeah, Scotty is a very talented mechanic.
Not, look at his brake pipe making video how he did it was very dangerous seriously any real mechanic knows not to listen to him

More like "oh Scotty told me to do this" then end up chasing a shorted wire from the map sensor. You kids are hilarious 😂

Hey that's what my Toyota corolla doing its shaking
Scotty is right about the simplest answer usually being the right answer. For those of you who like tediously long answers, here is another way to say it: Occam's razor - a scientific and philosophic rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities.
Dude I have no idea what your saying but I still enjoy watching your videos

I swear whenever I have a problem with my car (Which happens a lot). This channel is the first place I go to.
Amazing work, short and simple. Scotty is the neighborhood genius everyone will die for :D
I had the same problem here. I asked the the cat, and he fixed it up! Thanks Scotty!
You're the best. I haven't needed a mechanic for a very long time because of you
Noone makes it as simple as Scooty. Love you Sir!

Man I looked up why my car was stuttering and Scotty answered that for me; awesome guy
This information is very helpful, my mechanic almost made me change my fuel pump
Why did you replace the coils bc I wanna do my spark plugs and not coils but I’m not sure is that okay ?
@@Vids703 coil plugs only last 100,000 kms if there aftermarket sometimes depend the brand, if it's standard coils (factory) will only last 60,000-80,000 kms
Best to replace all coils and plugs if you just replace one coil expect the other coils to fail before the one you replaced that's why people normally do all coils and plugs at the same time!
@@kaneclark7171 I’ve seen so many people just replace spark plugs and not the coils and it runs perfect they only change the coils if they see thier is a misfire

Thanks so much keep up the amazing work!

thank you so much I knew that's what was wrong with my car but I am not all that good at diagnostics. thank you so much I really wanted to make sure it was not a nothing to serious.
I have chevy beat 2010 that hesitates while accelerating on low rpms.. however it goes off at highspeeds... Can this be ignition coil problem or any other problem? Please suggest shud i change the ignition coil or not...

I love that outro 😊
Scotty all mechanics use your videos for reference . Im one of them , thank you sir alot for what you helped me with
Changed plugs and coil still does the same hesitation. Could it be a bad fuel injector
Could be a fuel pump leak
Mine too, except I haven't changed all the coils
Can be the throttle position sensor or a fuel delivery system issue
Hey scotty ive been watching your videos for a while now and i just want to say thanks brother. You rock. I love how you explain what and why and how to fix things.
He just added 2 litres of transmission oil and that was it lol

Great Vid Scotty. Did you end up having to replace the coolant line as well?
of course
Why change the coolant line with spark plug change ?

Your video helped me determine my toyota sienna has bad oil control valves aka VVT. I did keep thinking it was plugs and coil packs.
Does the customer know you did a hot sticky burnout in her car ? 🤣
Scotty has the best intros lol 🤣🔥
Factory spark plugs after 123k miles? What the hell are those made out of? Mine go wrong after around 30-40k.
You are just going to destroy the coil packs by not changing sparkplugs. when the gap get bigger the coil have to make a bigger spark/harder to park and that shortens the coil life.
Factory *platinum* plugs are supposedly able to go 100,000 miles. *Iridium* plugs can go even longer than that.
Thanks for giving tips and tricks for all these years really appreciate it
Hey Scotty I really like your vids!
The ending is hilarious
