Noticed how he pronounced “Seinen“ like “Seenen“ at first but immediately switched to “Seinen“ after hearing?
shoutout to Golden Kamuy for being actually funny. the primary genre for it is seinen, but I think most of the funniest anime are actually funny because their humor isn't the primary point. like, a lot of them are actually more action/drama on the surface, and their jokes come up naturally over the course of the plot. that way, even if there is a recurring joke or two, it's more like a naturally formed in-joke, rather than a shoehorned repetitive forced punchline.
I feel like depression should be an anime genre. I still haven't fully recovered from technolyze and that was over a decade ago.
Mecha is a genre that becomes good depending on the story that is told with it.
for example, Gundam is so enduring because it's so much more than the mechs. a lot of the plots are about the inherent darkness of giving up your autonomy to a giant war machine. the characters may be in the pilot chair, but rarely are they really in control of their fate. it's about the characters suffering as pawns of a higher power, and the dehumanization of being sent to fight in conflicts where you have more in common with the soldiers on the other side, than you do with your commanding officer. anyone on the battlefield lacked the means to avoid being there... their primary stake in the game is simply not wanting to die.
I actually love Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team for this, because so often, the characters will fight tooth and nail against Zaku unit after Zaku unit... and truly, they look like these terrifyingly inhuman automatons that roam through the landscape and threaten the life of the mobile suits that are their enemies. but the instant you crack open the cockpit and there's a person whose face you can see... the dynamic shifts instantly. it may not mean that the fighting ends... but the humanity of the soldiers on the other side becomes instantly harder to ignore.
mecha anime is always at its best when it's actually about the humans that are in those machines.
Your first line is true for every single genre for story telling in any medium.
@@xcalixus sure, but that's why my first line proceeds the rest of what I wrote, so that I could elaborate on what I meant in terms of mecha, specifically. in the video, Nick was basically saying that he found mecha to be unappealing, and I think it's because he's seeing all of the mecha genre to be sort of like the old transformers cartoons, where the storytelling is kinda empty, and mostly in service of Put Big Robot On The Screen. my point is that the good mecha shows use the giant robots in creative ways to tell human stories. and giant robots are not a feature of every genre. they are a feature of specifically the mecha genre.
hence, mecha can be good, depending on the stories that you use them to tell.

that's why shows like gundam, evangalion, and gurren laggan is so good its because the focus is not on the mecha itslef but the mechs is just a medium to shows the conflict

Ecchi is not the same as hentai. Hentai is anime that shows them actually doing it. Ecchi is just the fanservice scenes.
Also a lot of people use the word ecchi.
The funny thing is that some ecchi shows lately (Ishuzoku Reviewers, Redo of Healer, etc.) have depicted the characters doing it, but they avoided genitals shot to not make it a hentai 😂
Yes, but why bother watching ecchi when hentai exists. It's like why go watch girls dance and strip when you can go buy a prostitute for the same money.

I am happy he included The World God Only Knows alongside The 100 Girlfriends as one of the few harem anime/manga to recommend to people. It really deserves it with how good the plot and MC is.
Sekirei is also part of that list.
@@evernightcg9081 true I’d stick with the manga version of it though. Same with The World God Only Knows. Rosario+Vampire falls under that category too. They made the anime nothing but fanservice pandering starting season 2 going with an anime-only season. The manga didn’t have much fanservice and had amazing fighting scenes and some great plot points to it as well.
Negima as well. After the first couple arcs in Negima in the manga, the plot begins picking up and although there’s still fanservice, the plot and action continues increasing even more and more becoming fantastic. So my favorite harem manga (staying as manga as the manga tend to be better) in no order: Negima, Sekirei, Rosario+Vampire, The World God Only Knows, and The 100 Girlfriends.
Light novel wise, I also like Tenchi Muyo GXP. I still need to watch the OG Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki OVAs. Oh, I also liked Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure the spin-off/parallel to Tenchi Muyo’s universe…

Holy shit, he'll definitely die after the first arc. The anime really gets brutally dark when it reaches the black rose arc.
@@KateBrod and confusing too! like, some parts of the Black Rose arc are 0% text, 100% subtext. I love it for that, but damn, you're not getting a single straight answer until at least a rewatch after you've seen the whole series at least once.
@@IDKLOL-qj7sl I agree. Once I got kinda over the Akio situation and managed to focus on the rest, I was majorly confused with everything that was happening on the screen and the fact that no one seemed to notice.
@@KateBrod yeah, and like, the whole Anthy to Mamiya connection is only understandable in hindsight. it's only after the (mostly visual, not verbal) reveal that Anthy was playing the role of Mamiya to manipulate Mikage, that we really even understand how much power Anthy has. up until this point, Anthy has played a very convincing victim role... so there's really not much precedent for the viewer to think that Anthy could be capable of this, even if a lot of her actions make way more sense in hindsight with that knowledge.
it's a really good story beat, but it's such a huge shift in your perception of a character that it almost takes a while for you to reorient yourself to the new information. it's great in terms of recontextualization though.
One missing genre is "BL" or "Boys Love", which may be categorised as Shojo or Rommance
Also referred to as Yaoi & could be classed in Ecchi, rarely as a harem.
Its opposite referred to as Yuri (GL = Girl Love).

They were originally classed as the same thing until ppl split it into 2 sides.

"Puella Magi Madoka Magica" is a shojo, but at the same time it is also an extremely "depressing" anime.

The amount of times I see people, even people who have watched numerous mecha already and liked them, go "idk if I'll ever get into mecha" is kinda crazy.
And I was the same way, but I already forgot what that was like ngl.
Try not to be intimidated, there is no perfect starting point and no perfect path. Hot-Blooded or passionate Super Robot shows can be a starting point and so can comparatively more realistic Real Robot shows like most Gundams.
I personally enjoy the history and passion behind it, and watching older ones to then see the nods, similarities, references and even responses in other shows feels great for me. You can point to the some odd mecha shows, look into them and see the line/rabbit hole that made it come to be, it's sick!
But you can find your own favorite aspects!
Or you'll learn why you do or don't like mecha. That sits better with me than the uncertainty I see a lot.
For getting into mecha, I would recommend watching Gurren Lagann as you can tell from my pfp it's amazing lol

The fact that anime has entire genres revolving around being sent to alternative world or mechas is kinda crazy. I mean it's crazy how commonly those themes are used to make them into whole genres.
I recommend Inazuma eleven! It’s a sports anime where the characters’ soccer moves are basically magic powers, and It includes antagonists taking performance enhancing drugs and even “aliens”. it was my childhood and I haven’t seen anyone react to it.
Yesss it was my first anime, I got super invested and I've also never seen reactions to it!! I'll say idk how much an adult could like it, I think it's very much something targeted towards a younger audience but I still live it in my 20s so maybe everyone should just give it a try and see for themselves.
I can see Nick being in G Gundam for mecha genre tbh. It's basically Dragon Ball with giant robot, they even their own Kamehameha.

Dungeon Meshi is probably my favorite comedy anime/manga right now
I have been a fan of Slice of Life fan for almost 15 years now. It's the anime genre that I vibe the most with. With that said, I have enjoyed the rest of the genre mentioned here. There is an anime for everybody, it's awesome.
K-On and Yuru camp being my Top2 animes of all time (I watched over 700 shows) is a testament how down bad I am for SoL

He's wrong, there was Isekai's prior to that like Shurato is actually also a shounen type show with multiple heroes, in the veins of saint seyia. But the main characters are transport into another world.
Another anime that comes to mind is Fushigi Yuugi where a girl goes inside a book and another world.
But it wasn't a theme like it's today.

I could see you getting into G Gundam. It's a self contained story so you don't need to watch any other Gundam shows and it's basically a giant tournament arc in giant robots. It's fun.

Given that you liked Attack on Titan I imagine you could feasibly enjoy the Universal Century (the main timeline) Gundams. Hardest part is just figuring out a watch order, which I'll admit is annoying but it's easy to google and half of them are optional side-stories anyways.

So Gundam all i want to say its a hell of journey, every tittle your ever heard or seen before mostly about 12-50 run episode. I started with this franchise when new Gundam announce which is Witch from Mercury (2022). Its worth it? YES and maybe kinda hard to atract new audiance cuz the very first anime Gundam were 1979. Zeta is peak.

As much as I liked Familiar of Zero, I think Digimon should get an honorable mention as one of the early isekai animes.
Familiar of Zero feels like a fever dream tbh, I watched it when I was very new to anime, the tropes confused me and I never see anyone acknowledge it's existence 😂

21:18 is Team 7 vs Kaguya or in this case more specifically Naruto and Sasuke vs Kaguya. This is also Naruto using Shadow clones jutsu and then using transformation jutsu at the same time. in other words his "sexy" jutsu is being used in "reverse" so u get a ton a naked guys instead of women. 😄

In fact, there is almost no fantasy in anime as such, only Frieren, Ranking of Kings and Made in the Abyss come to mind.
Snow White with the Red Hair is most definitely fantasy, Kyoukai no Kanata as well, and I guess Fullmetal Alchemist counts as well. I'm sure there are more but I can't really think of any that I've watched at least.
@@laurainathunderstorm I mean pure fantasy with adventure. Fullmetal Alchemist is a shonen first of all. I didn't watched the other two you mentioned but I think that they are build not around a fantasy and it's just exists like in most of the isekai animes such as Konosuba has fantasy elements but still it's a isekai comedy.
@@bianaghe the other ones are nto isekai nor comedy, Snow White is pure fantasy with adventure and Kyoukai no Kanata is more of a magic realism type? Not really bc the fantasy aspects are not 100% public knowledge but it's definitely not a battle shonen by any means. Also Shonen isn't a genre anyway so I count FMA under fantasy.
Pure fantasy is like having dragons, elves, dwarfs basic staff that FMA doesn't have.
You can compare it even with Berserk which is a dark fantasy.

I said SWRD was like that, FMA still occurs in a fantastic world though, with a magic sistem and fantastical beings, like chimeras and homonculi, although in this case they're man made and not mythological. hell yes, where are the gay and/or bisexual harems?!??!!!! this is what my bisexual ass really needs. like, come on now, we live in 2024, do we not?? there is so much untapped potential there, like, all the fun of a good yuri or BL, plus the straight harem dynamics we all know and love, but freshened up with the way they'd interact with the gay side of things... harem authors could get so inventive with this type of thing, and it'd actually make the harem protagonist more interesting, or at least give them more interesting things to contend with.
tbh, this is why Haruhi Fujioka still reigns supreme as the crown prince of harem anime. she's a nonbinary icon, she's got boys smitten, girls smitten, and all the confidence to not give a shit about any of the drama that could've caused for a protagonist that was any less of a chad about it. Ouran High School Host Club stays winning. I just need a story with a similar ethos that is about like... actual adults. please, we've progressed as a society, we can do this, I need it. T_T

Nothing to do with harem but a romcom with very much bisexual vibes is Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, but you'd probably have to read the manga afterwards bc the anime didn't get a second season and it's been years.
@@laurainathunderstorm oooh! I've watched Nozaki-kun and that one is also really good! I need to check out the manga still, I had a ton of fun with the anime. I've also checked out Villainess, though i was watching with a friend who got really busy, so we didn't get too far past a certain point before dropping it by accident. I might have to go back and just watch it on my own... I remember liking it!

I just like ensemble casts mostly. so for example, right now my main new favorite anime is Dungeon Meshi. but it feels like I hear about harem anime a lot in anime community conversations, and they tend to have so many of the same tropes, premises, and complaints from the audience, that it just feels like the genre could benefit from being shaken up. and this conversation has basically covered all the mixed gender harems I've ever heard of, which feels like an oversight. ^^;

If we go by ensemble cast then Horimiya is pretty good but it's really big so my guess is you've already watched it? I do love me some sports anime tho, so I'd rec Tsurune, it's not really well known but I enjoyed it, I heard it got new content recently, a movie I think but I haven't had time to check it out.
On a completely different vein I liked Buddy Daddies a lot, if you want found family feels give it a shot.
