Andrei Gavrilov gewann zu Recht den 1.Preis damals! Welch ein Talent!
Gawrilow war ein ganz Großer und hatte die Schnauze voll vom Soviet-System. Von der Kontrolle, den Schikanen und dem unerträglichen Druck dieser Diktatur! Vladimir Ashkenazy haute ebenfalls ab in die Schweiz. Horowitz ging in die USA. Über Sergei Prokoviev ist hinreichend dokumentiert, wie Er durch die Soviets schikaniert wurde. Russland ist stolz auf ihn. Und stolz auf Rachmaninov und Stravinsky. Letztere beide gingen ebenfalls in die USA. Diese scheiß verlogene Nomenklatura mit den heutigen Kreml-Terroristen Sergei Lavrov, Dimitri Medwedew und Massenmörder Putin gehört vor ein internationales Gericht gestellt und im Zweifelsfalle hingerichtet, aber erst, wenn sie einige Jahre bei Wasser und schlechtem Brot Zeit hatten, über die schweren Verbrechen nachzudenken, die sie angerichtet haben. Gawrilow wünsche ich alles alles Gute!
Has Myung-Whun Chung given piano recitals post-[circa]1980? Even 1990?
Just in this video.... it makes me want to hear very single note of his, live, in the concert hall!
P.S. I'm not even a pianist but appreciate all instruments! The piano isn't a favourite of mine.. well.. it's in my top 5 or 6. I would "miss" a professional violin or viola concert just to see Mr Chung play piano :)

The winner at the piano competition was Andrei Gawrilow who was controlled and harassed by the Soviets. He moved to Switzerland like the former gold medal winner Vladimir Ashkenazy because abroad this great pianists and musicians can live in freedom, liberty and democracy! Also Rachmaninov and Stravinsky moved to the USA. Horowitz. Violin gold medal winner Victoria Mullova (competition 1982) , who was a student of Leonid Kogan, moved to Canada, the USA and now she lives in London. It is well known that the soviet system feels proud even in 2023 on its composers but they don't tell you the for example Sergei Prokoviev was suffering from the soviet pressure and restrictions of that inhuman soviet dictatorship!
Why Youri Egorov isn't in the picture?
He shoud be 3rd place!!
Yuri Egorov was 3rd prize winner! The results Andrei Gavrilov Myung Whun Chung Stanislav Igolinsky Yuri Egorov Eteri Andsapadridze Andras Schiff Dimitri Alexeev Tatjana Rjumina Natalia Gavrilova Eero Heinonen and so on!!

The BEST one in the piano competition was andras schiff, but there was some politics to decide the gold medal.

Abdras Schiff was 3rd prize winner in Leeds competition in 1975! The Tchaikovsky competition much higher talent than Leeds! The Tchaikovsky competition in 1974 was the Best ever players like Andrei Gavrilov Stanislav Igolinsky Myung Whun Chung Yuri Egorov Eteri Andsapadridze Brigette Engerer Dimitri Alexeev Tatjana Rjumina Natalia Gavrilova Eero Heinonen and they all better than boring over-rated Andras Schiff!!

Tchaikovsky No. 1 on steroids is the title. Chung is the man. With the politics in Russia, it's very difficult for an American to beat their beloved countryman on their own soil. Cliburn did it, but he was the only one.
