What a genius! This Prokoviev is incredible! I owned a record when Andrei Gawrilow recorded the Rachmaninov piano-concerto in d-minor when he was something like 17 years. He is one of the greatest pianists of his generation and it's sad that his career turned a little bit to another direction. Same with Ivo pogorelich. Even if I think that Ivo played more interesting than he did when he was young and wild. Andrei Gawrilow- well, would like to listen to him in concert today (2023). I would like to listen to his Bach and the Russian composers indeed. Andrei is underrated! There's nobody from Russia today playing like him! Great artist!

The Chopin b-minor finale sounds diabolic, mystic and almost perfect. It's a miracle! Great performance, dear maestro Gawrilow!

What a beautiful Chopin! Gawrilow is using the sustain pedal only if it's needed. Maybe a little too fast ( okay : 1st movement is "doppio mvt.") but on the other hand very clear pronounced, cantabile and there's a lot of intimacy! I'm so happy for Andrei living in Europe after he was tortuend by the Soviet system. Russia does not want freedom, freedom of speech, free opinion , self expression and democracy!

Rachmaninoff did not play like this. It is ridiculously fast; so fast that you cannot hear the notes or catch the meaning of the music. Chopin should never sound diabolic! He can play fast, but so what? It is just a mad rush. Where is the nobility and subtle phrasing? No where!

It seems like Gavrilov programmed this recital with music that expresses his hatred of the Soviet system. An outdoor recital in a beautiful setting with adoring fans, but he chooses Chopin's darkest work and a piece Prokofiev wrote when he thought he was about to die? This might require an explanation. Chopin's funeral march was usually played at funerals when leading Soviets died (e.g., Stalin) -- For example, Richter described playing Beethoven at Stalin's funeral until he was interrupted by a brass band playing Chopin's funeral march. And there were several such funerals in the 80s. Maybe Gavrilov chose the Chopin sonata sardonically, declaring that the final nail had been hammered into the Soviet coffin.
Second, Prokofiev 8 (especially the final movement) expresses the composer's hatred toward the Soviet Union, as Gavrilov describes elsewhere on UA-cam. The weird march-like section resembles the clunky, second-rate technology and machinery that proliferated due to disastrous Soviet economic theory, and according to Gavrilov, the finale is "full of hate".
Hence, I suspect that Gavrilov seized the moment and perhaps thought "Sorry, I know you wanted some nice, pleasant music for this lovely occasion, but I've got decades of pent-up rage to express here. Sit back as I give the middle finger to the Soviet Union."

Well, Gavrilov plays a lot of dark agressive music, that's partly why I dig his playing. It doesn't have to be any underlying message in the program

B minor sonata is outside music the B b minor Sonata is most definitely not !!! American aren't this quiet even at Carnegie Hall! The Scherzo is faster than anyone but these heavy all fingered chords are so hard . What a difference : every pianist seems to be playing different music in this . This years Chopin had the best slow Funeral March Ive ever heard an Italian woman .But Liu was incredible as was Gadjiev ! How do these ordinary Europeans get such a quiet port not much boat whistle .My dog turns into a hound when I play the exposition of this Sonata . Gavrilov: Why So Fast opening t?empestous; it gets across fetid! I want to hear Pletnev & Sokolov in this ! Richter Gilels I can't imagine in this music ! Gilels !!!

    Даже Ланг-Ланг со временем угомонился.

I was asked by the Maestro's entourage to make that video private. They asked me as a sign of respect for the Master and I thought it was right to do it because it is certainly not my intention to do something unwelcome to the Maestro. Grigory Sokolov's tour with that program has just begun and maybe they don't want to take away a bit of "surprise effect" from all the fans. I think I will release that video again in a few weeks / months when many have already heard him playing live.
