Been thinking about buying a broken one cause I litterly cant find a working one for a reasonable price.
Hey man, Linus did a video on his channel about static electricity and how it affects PC components... basic the conclusion said that static won't kill anything, and they took it up to crazy levels.
Imagine spending $1000 on a ps5 and waiting 10 years for it to be delivered and it has this many problems 🤮

I second that. I've fixed things I'd normally chuck and brought a ton of broken ps4s and made a few quid fixing them. Wouldn't of tried if I hadn't accidentally come across this man.

I would use a more graphically intensive game for testing, to make sure the system is stressed as much as possible to make sure it isn't turning off under load or something like that. Great video!

I'm as curious about the hair/lint under a microscope as the inside of the unit. It's impressive how dirty people can make the console.
Ha, ha. It’s so strange how hair & dirt can get where it does
carpets, rugs, couch, bed, curtains... all types of cloth shed fibers and so do humans with hair and pets with fur. where i live quite dry and desertic. the earth is red. consoles get red inside because the fans suck the dirt in
@@Tronicsfix My process is, since I am almost owning one for two years, is to clean it twice a year. I have not taken it apart this far since all I find is a light dust. I do use an electronics vacuum cleaner and note that my covers are not dirty.
I’ve covered my console with a light cloth since launch, no heavy dust build up inside or out.
I have cats, which between them and dust even with keeping dust covers on them when not in use I do have to do an annual cleaning.
I really appreciate what you are doing, you show us that we can all get a little bit more hands on and try to do it ourselves. Since i am watching you I’ve fixed my phone, my dad’s phone and my wife’s phone and also a couple of PS4’s and an Alienware laptop. I thank you with all my heart, you are great !!
Man why I feel so excited whenever you upload a new video. It's so relaxing watching an expert diagnose and fix an issue.
I just wanted to day that Tronicsfix is one of the youtubers that gave me confidence in repairing old electronics.
Im still learning and practicing but i have helped some family members repair some controllers when they thought they would have to buy brand new ones.
It feels good being able to help, save money and give electronics a longer lifespan, cutting down e-waste.

For removing dust from computers and electronic equipment I usually use an air compressor. The air compressor does a very job and you can controller the amount air blowing onto your equipment. I do recommend having an outdoor area to expel the dust.
I'm very impress with TronicsFix. With alot of play time fixing PS5. He have gotten so good in taken PS5 apart and put his magic touch into fixing the problem. You rock dude.
For a PS5 to be that dirty just imagine how dirty and disgusting that persons house is. I have had mine since day 1 and opened it recently it was damn near spotless. I have 4 cats and a dog.
Right? I’m wondering if it’s in a hoarding house or the owners don’t change their house air filter…
Dust buildup can be much worse if you have the console on or close to the floor as that’s where the majority of dust accumulates

Glad to hear vacuuming boards isn't dangerous. I think I've heard before that the main dangerous thing with vacuums generating static is if you make the fan spin.
Just want to say, your videos are very interesting, I wish I had a ps5 of my own, and also Its cool seeing the inner workings of these consoles.
I have been repairing PC's since 1990. I have always used compressed air, vacuums and brushes to clean components. I have never, in my entire career, ever had any problems related to static electricity. I am always careful not to overdrive fans with the compressed air.
you a crazy fella paying all that money for potentially screwed consoles. but I enjoy watching these, really interesting and watching your videos I managed to fix my controllers and open consoles to clean.
It suggests to me that used consoles are maybe a bad idea for everyday folks to buy, considering what he finds in them. But, he's making money on UA-cam so the cost of the console is absorbed into that if it should turn out to not be repairable. But, if it is repairable, he can put it back on the market 'at cost' and he will still have made money on it from the UA-cam video of the repair.

I'm a slot technician. I love your videos, as they have helped me at home to maintain all of my consoles and electronics. I agree with your opinion on the vacuum, however, they do offer anti-static attachments for them. I use a RYOBI hand-held at work for cleaning and preventative maintenance. Talk about gross, these things are full of nicotine, ashes, stale beer, hair, etc... However, I'd rather deal with that than a PS4 full of cockroaches. Have a good one Steve! Great vid! Keep it up!

As soon as I saw the SSD cover missing in the third one I knew. I always will remember what you mentioned one time: Always use a small set of pliers to grip the plug and pull it up whilst carefully wiggling. The hair and grime in the second one are often the case when the room is not well "maintained". It could also be from smoking and an animal that is shedding. With the prices of the PS5 going up you could sell them fairly quickly I would think.

Hi, I love watching your repair videos, there's something kinda hypnotic about them, do you recommend leaded or unleaded solder? I prefer working with leaded as all unleaded stuff I've used has been rubbish (lacking flux and ruining my soldering iron end) but has that just been the wrong type?

I am an IT system engineer. When I work on a PC or server, I use an ESD safe vacuum. I've never had any issues with static buildup, even before I got the ESD vacuum. This one just has a better filter.
Aren't most vacuum parts plastic? So how could they build up static charge? Or discharge it. I know we had one at work and it weren't cheap but sure looked just like a regular small canister vacuum. You yourself are more likely to damage by static so thus wearing your wrist strap to prevent is wise.
@@tradde11 the theory behind vacuums causing static is due to the movement of air particles transferring electrons from the plastics which results in a potential difference between the areas of negative air pressure and insulator (plastics). If I’m not mistaken, the static safe vacuums basically have a bare Earthed conductor at the aperture of the vacuum cleaner to discharge the vacuum (negative air pressure).
P.S. you can rub a plastic tube with a cloth to generate electrostatic energy. This principle is how a Van der Graaff generator produces a charge.
@@brightwebltd2864 Ok, I can accept that. I am not a scientist. I have forgotten anything about electricity I learned long ago in school. I do my best not to zip anything in my electronics. Who would have known about air particles transferring electrons.

Great fixes ones again, sometimes a good clean really is enough to have you console work great again. I ones had a Ps4 with a little corner of the APU which was not covert with thermal paste and the ps4 was soooo loud, after applying the perfect amout is was really silent :D great video Steve.

It always amazes me how little care some people take with their belongings. Especially on expensive items like these. For an item which just sits next to the TV it really shouldn't be hard to keep it nice

Question:
Does the position of the PS5 (vertical or horizontal) matter in terms of prolonging or taking care of the liquid metal?
Im no expert but i loved the question. So gonna give my thought process it may be wrong it may be right someone would have to supply the actual answer. But im going to assume that it wouldnt the liquid metalnwould be packed in tigh enough that hotspots would create a convection current would allow it to flow around the area the liquid metal being is probably light enough to not be affected by horizontal or vertical positions. As for the dry spots in the video perhaps the metal leaked or just didnt have enough in the original build

The only issue I have experienced with my ps5 (1000+ hours at least) is the fan clicks loudly when spooling up or down. Even replaced it with the same results
Interesting, I’ve heard them click a bit but not loudly. That’s a strange one

Boards and components are pretty resilient in my years of tech repair and assembly as well. It would take a GOOD shock to damage anything more than a vacuum or your normal static. That 2nd PS5 was very dirty. Oh boy.
Great video and great shirt . And with static. Linus did tests to see how dangerous static is to electronics. Results says it’s very very very difficult to harm electronics with static. So no one needs to worry about it.

20+ years in the repair business, been using a shop vac, compressed air and a horse hairbrushs to clean pc's never zapped a system. However during the cold months and low humid I do spray my attachments with an anti-static spray.
I just love the totally necessary pieces
The first two weren't really broken though. Dirty, yes. Broken, no. I'd say you got a good deal except for the fact that you almost paid the full price for each of the three used PS5s.
the 1st had mangled hdmi port and he soldered 20 pins in a space less than an inch . 2nd needed a full disassembly to function.
I never get why he pays so much for broken goods as there is no guarantee they will be fixable. If I was buying a broken PS5, the most I would even consider paying is 50% retail price, and even that would be at a push.
@@caphowdy666 I don't think anyone would sell a used current console for half the price unless it experience very visible catastrophic failure. For part is still have quite a bit of value.
@@DesignIncase Well they do here. Selling for parts only or as broken, they are always 50% or less of retail value.

Sometimes there's dry spots on the APU for the same reason PC CPU's have them. The die/heatspreader is not perfectly flat even though they look like it to the naked eye. So when you take off a cooler it will be pooled in one spot and flatter in others
isnt that the whole point of liquid metal tho? you put it on both surfaces so they mate with each other and then it stays there? never used the stuff so only going by what i see on videos

@@mrn234 If done right the liquid metal closes the gap of the "contact problem" so there should not be a contact problem.. That's the whole point of liquid metal.

(Like Gaps, or to much transfer space, in the Opposite Corner, even though the L/M is there. It Should be Even Pressure. We're not Talking a Carpenters Millimeters in Electronics👍)

Any kind of thermal paste or liquid metal only works when you have proper contact between heatsink and heatsource.

Watching this makes me want to buy a broken ps5 and see if i can learn how to repair a console from watching his videos.
seems like anything other than cleaning out dust would need experience though and im not sure if i can pick it up just from these videos. How long does it take to learn to fix consoles?

I think you might need to try other games outside of Trials to possibly uncover the crashing issue that PS5's have that isn't 100% known why it happens. Thought is either the APU or RAM causing crashing on some games and not others. I had a Digital PS5 that would crash when playing a more demanding game like Warzone or APEX legends, but never crash on lesser games like Sackboy, Fall Guys, etc.

Metro vacuum makes a vacuum and a blower that are must haves if you clean electronics. We use their vacuum at work to clean toner cartridge spills. They work great and are designed to work on electronics.
I have also personally never had a problem with static electrisity from vacuuming. Allthough, I have encountered problems with it...
One time I was lazy and did not turn off my computer before I started vacuuming. And it did flicker signal on my monitors when my vacuum got near the fans on the computer.
My guess is that this was due to the disturbance of the dust buildup, which moved and caused something on the inside of the computer to short for a brief moment.
But as long as the electronics are disconnected from power, this method should be safe.
I had an electronics class did a little bit of soldering. Was fun and watching your channel just makes me want to do it again. Now the vacuum you use is it made for cleaning electronics? I always used air dusters and I was just worried that the handheld vacuum wouldn't be as good.
You should definitely get into it again! I just use any vacuum I have for them

Great video! You almost have enough hair in those PS5's to make a toupe. Have you thought about using an air compressor to blow out the lint and dust from the heatsinks?

I use a leaf blower to clean my computer. I have done it 10's of times and never had an issue and I still have those machines, grand kids use it. I am talking about a i7-3770 from 2012 still in use and has been blown away countless times.

The most interesting part imo, was the fan connector soldering so you should've shown more of that, otherwise it's an amazing video.
How does something like that even break off? Someone trying to fix something doing something wrong and prying on that plug?
I would think this plug would be fairly safe from damage.

Every 2 weeks I take the plates off and give a good clean with a gentle air blowing and vacuum cleaner and is clean as possible I have my ps5 since the release date and no worries so far everything is original 👍 I like your videos they explain everything very good, keep with the good work 👍👍👌
