I'm glad you knew the background of Zombie! So many reactions have someone asking people to explain in the comments what the song is about. It's so much better when the reactor has context of the song's meaning and why it was written. One thing I'd suggest is this is one of the relatively few songs where the music video adds so much that it's an accompanying work of art. I would've liked to see what you both think of the the video, too.
I grew up on the music of the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s, lived overseas in a non -English speaking country for most of the 90’s and never paid much attention after that to new music. Thanks for checking out the channel!
@@1q3er5i think the most important part of his comment is that he didn’t listen to new music at that time. while it may be popular in most of the world if you don’t pay attention to new music you don’t pay attention to new music. example: i live in america and i cannot tell you a single top hit from the last 3 years. i don’t like the new popular music so i don’t listen to it, it may be all over the place but i really don’t listen to what’s playing unless it’s a song i like.
What she does with her voice is called "keening" - it's an Irish thing - especially during funerals. So powerful, Such a tragedy that Dolores is gone from us now. 🥲
To really get the emotion of the song you should watch the video as well. When she arranged the song she instructed the drummer to bang away at the drums to get across her outrage, the emotion.. this song is a masterpiece...every word, every note...everything!

That you went back to research the song and presented the important context before playing the song for him speaks volumes to your integrity. I have been a Cranberries fan since the early 90s and think this is one of the most dynamic technical as well as emotional message songs from the group. I enjoyed you picking up and describing the intricacies of the intro. I haven't heard someone who had identified the significance and taken it apart before; bravo. The same method is used for each verse intro. It reminded me of something I learned years ago in classical music: The loudest note on a Beethoven score is a rest. We share that our musical tastes are all across the spectrum and in that line it's not often other venues reach across the wide divide to compliment, but this certainly happened with Delores O'Riordan. In the hit time of The Cranberries the other side of the music world, classical, reached across. Luciano Pavarotti, at the time the world's greatest classical tenor, invited The Cranberries to his show where they performed one of their songs. Then, Pavarotti and Delores sang Ave Maria, Pavarotti's signature piece together. I wish the technology of the time had better recorded the event as it was magnificent. And what an homage to the greatness he felt for Delores as an artist and to the messages she was conveying through her music. On a side note to that performance, Princess Diana was in the audience. I enjoy reaction videos. Particularly, I enjoy watching how a person is moved when hearing a new song or a new style of music. Keep spreading the wonderment of discovery.
I remember those concerts known as Pavarotti and Friends raising funds for the children of Bosnia, the reason Princess Diana was also there. Pavarotti did like 10 concerts over the same number of years I think? anyway, moot point. Delores was amazing!
this song is probably a bigger cultural phenomenon in Europe both because of the context but also because North American radio really doesn't like to feature songs about children dying
The music video makes this song even more powerful...real powerful. Also the tribute by Bad Wolves is powerful. Dolores was supposed to record this song with Bad Wolves but just day before in London she sadly passed away and Bad Wolves released their own version as a tribute to her. Not one eye is dry seeing Bad Wolves version of Zombie...
This song - and the Cranberries themselves - were MASSIVE in the 90s. Their music is in a lot of tv series and film from that era. Rest In Paradise Queen Dolores 💚🙏 Always in Our Hearts. Blessings always to Ireland 💚
every colonial oppressed nation identifies with ireland in their pain and struggles especially against the british imperialism (before the murican neo imperialism now) and this song touched a chord in me and a lot of people at my place who werent native english speakers, unlike me, and yet they were so moved. it was a huge hit in many parts of asia during the 90s. her inflections in the song always move me to tears. RIP DOLORES O RIORDAN
The song is about the IRA killing children, not the British ""imperialism"" as you foolishly refer to it as. The Northern Irish continue, as they always have, to want to remain a part of the UK.
The Bad Wolves cover of this also has an incredible story and is an amazing performance. Dolores died the day she was set to so vocals for their version.

Im not sure if you have delved into Pearl Jam with your father but they are the best grunge sound from the 90s scene. The strength of Eddie Vedder as a singer and performer is unmatched. A good start to see that is the MTV Unplugged version of BLACK. Hope you love them as much as I do. Blessings to you and your father and family. I love the love that is shown between you guys.
I saw them live 2 times and its sounds exactly rhe same live, Delores' voice is like no other and utterly amazing. You can hear its perfection in their softer songs.
I graduated high school in 94 and was working at a music store (corporate) a few weeks later. The two albums that were played NONSTOP over the in-store stereo were this album and Hootie and The Blowfish debut album. As a Metal/Grunge kid, neither band was my cup of tea, but I actually grew to enjoy and appreciate both of those albums.
Saw Hootie in concert around that time. It remains the best live concert I have ever witnessed, and I've seen The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Peter Frampton, Bob Dylan, CSNY. You get my point. Hootie played 3 curtain calls after playing 3 sets. They covered Elvis, Simon and Garfunkel, Johnnie Cash, they were all over the place and every arrangement was amazing.
I'm older than the dad but my daughter was the age that exposed me to this music. it gave me chills then and I still react that way all these years later.

I don't understand how it is possible that he hasn't heard this one before. It has been the most played song on the radio for multiple different years.
I think this song puts into perfect context what it was like growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s in the UK and Ireland. Obviously nowhere faced it as badly as Northern Ireland. But from my perspective in England, it was just an unspoken understanding that if you went into a city or town centre, you might not come home. The worst ones, (like Warrington, which was the catalyst for this song), were always the ones where children were hurt, but I remember particularly when the centre of Manchester was bombed. I was at an event, and we were counting off who was meant on their way from Manchester, who hadn't arrived yet, and trying to get hold of them to make sure they were ok. The 1916 reference is to the Easter Uprising, when the real fight for Irish Independence began. The fighting over Northern Ireland continued for more than 80 years. And now there's a whole generation of kids who never had to grow up with that knowledge that they could be blown up any day... Thank God and Mo Mowlam for the Good Friday Agreement.

I was in first year of senior/secondary school in the U.K. when that song came out it was a massive hit in the U.K., it’s a crying shame what happened to the cranberry’s lead singer Delores o'riordan, she drowned in her bath due to alcohol intoxication in London. Such a loss we will never hear her unique voice with new songs again. God bless her.

Yesterday I introduced your channel to my sister nd she really likes the relationship between u n ur dad, nd u just dropped a reaction on her really fav song i can't believe that! 🤍🤍🤍
With the Cranberries the iconic songs more typical of their sound were “Linger” or “Dreams”. Dreams was on the soundtrack for a Drew Barrymore movie “Never Been Kissed” which was an interpretation of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”
This is the type of song that with Context, hits so much harder. It reminds me of Pearl Jam's Jeremy, which hits even harder now after all the mental/emotional health issues taken front in the last few years in the U.S.
that's so crazy, we were literally talking about and analyzing this song in my English class yesterday!! & I am just now seeing that you guys posted this 4 days ago. i love the cranberries

The video is incredible as well! Almost recommend a separate reaction to the video because it does so much to contribute to the theme! Love and appreciate all you do! ❤️
Yesterday I introduced your channel to my sister nd she really likes the relationship between u n ur dad, nd u just dropped a reaction on her really fav song i can't believe that! 🤍🤍🤍
Good song and her voice is so unique!!!
I love when pops instantly smiles when he hears her voice @4:01.
With the Cranberries the iconic songs more typical of their sound were “Linger” or “Dreams”. Dreams was on the soundtrack for a Drew Barrymore movie “Never Been Kissed” which was an interpretation of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”
My heart breaks and I cry when I hear this song, I loved the Cranberries and I miss her so much 😔
This is the type of song that with Context, hits so much harder. It reminds me of Pearl Jam's Jeremy, which hits even harder now after all the mental/emotional health issues taken front in the last few years in the U.S.
kid undersold how deep the conflict from which this song is derived. Absolute terror for generations. Lovely
Great reaction guys, Dolores had a great lilting voice
when you’re gone, linger, put me down, i will always, & dying inside are no skip songs !!
You should actually do the entire Cranberries "No need to argue" album. It was monumental!
that's so crazy, we were literally talking about and analyzing this song in my English class yesterday!! & I am just now seeing that you guys posted this 4 days ago. i love the cranberries
Now you have to play "Linger" for your dad & let him see how diverse they were. He probably already knows that song.
The video for this track was mesmerising !
Rip Dolores o Riordan, I loved the cranberries, Linger is my favorite by them.
I love your format, watching you listening to these great songs. Real people listening with a lot of respect and gratitude to great music. Thanks!
You should check out the video to this song. It has great visuals.
Also there's a remake by Bad Wolves which Delores was supposed to be featured on but she passed away before they could get her on it. They still made the song which is great and also a great video that pays homage to her.
I loved the cranberries and the song "Zombie" as well as "Linger." I'm glad you chose this to react to because it's definitely deserving
The Bad Wolves cover of this song is top 10 covers ALL TIME for me. Because of the epic performance but also the incredible story behind the making of it. Please do that SOON.
Linger by this group is another beautiful classic I hope you guys jump into.
Strange how this channel keeps you glued to the screen! Guys youre a joy!
As an Irish man I'm very happy you guys reviewed this song. Cool 😎
Maybe a little Roy Gallagher or Five Hand Reel is called for! Thanks for watching. - Kai’s dad
@@frontroom Rory Gallagher, a truly fantastic guitarist 🎸 I am happy you know of him! Definitely review some Rory! I'm sure you would love Thin Lizzy too, there's a few reviews in there I'm sure! 😎☘💚
@@frontroom and little different to Dolores Keane!! But both very good ,This Dolores you listening to now has sung Ave Maria with Pavorotti ☘️
RIP Dolores. Forever treasured, loved and missed. I still listen and cry to this album years later from when I first bought it as a CD ❤❤❤
