I love this hairstyle! I'd love to see some simpler or quicker 18th century hairstyles, such as those that a woman without a maid would wear or that someone would wear when they were running late or going somewhere they didn't need to be elegant, especially because the perception we have of the 18th century is that they spent hours on their hair while not everyone could afford to do that every day.
In the 18th century these hairstyles were made with tons of powder and pomade made of animal fats that are solid at room temperature. Many actually slept with the hairdo and the same hairstyle would be used for even weeks at a time before either washing hair or just combing it through and styling again in a different way. Just add some more powder in the morning and you're good to go! Those who could afford it would just cut their hair away and wear a wig instead. If you had no time to fix the hair you could wear a hat or an elaborate cap made of fine linen, silk, tulle and lace to cover it. So nope, one would not make a new hairstyle everyday but instead brushed any fly aways and baby hairs away with more powder and pomade or had a maid fix it for them. This is a style for upper class ladies who had nothing to do but sit around, entertain guests and give orders to servants. Everyone else would just whip their hair up on a quick bun with a wood or bone bodkin, put on a linen or hemp cap and start the day.

The time involved was probably part of the reason wigs were so popular, since you can take off a wig and not have to worry about ruining your hairstyle by sleeping on it.

@@traceej4685 I'm sorry you feel that way. But to my knowledge, the hairstyle portrayed in the video is pretty much as simple as you can do. After all the 18th century is a period of elaborate and luxorious fashion 👠👑🌟 The regency era has very elegant but pretty simple ancient roman/ancient Greece inspired hairstyles and the Victorian period also has easy to do buns and braided hairstyles if you want to look those up! :-)

heck yes - rub a little pomade into your hair, then dust it with the dry shampoo and you'll be amazed how pliable and style-able it becomes

I don't know if there's actually people who are following this tutorial to do their own hair (I wouldn't - only for Halloween or so) but I find it so relaxing and satisfying to watch their videos. Her voice is so calm.
And I admire the passion they must have for this special subject of doing old hair and make up styles! (as well as the lovely 'getting dressed' videos)

Yeah, I'd have loved to have seen a tutorial that used authentic styling products! Suet based products are not nearly as mad of an idea as it sounds to people today, since suet lasts indefinitely at room temperature-- hard to wash out I guess, but I'd really like to know what the real thing looked like.
@@e.s.r5809 Its a bit easier to wash out than it used to. If you put shampoo on your dry hair *according to American Duchess' book* :)

In the "Getting Dressed in the 12th Century" there was section where plaits were looped up with ribbon and a fillet of linen secured on top for the veil to be pinned to. I have tried for months to recreate this with no success. Could you show a video on how to do this? I think it would be an interesting style for long hair or for younger girls with the ribbon and everything, though without the veil for modern times
What type of ribbons are you using? You may be having difficulty recreating it if you're using satin ribbon since satin ribbons don't like to hold their shape when tied and have little grip. Try it with silk ribbon, it should have more grip and will hopefully stay better. :)
I've used silk, satin and grosgrain ribbons of almost every width and in numerous lengths but with no joy. My hair is also hip length so I will need a longer ribbon than most people would. But since most medieval women didn't cut their hair it is maybe more accurate that way

I would be lying if i say i dont envy Kate’s beauty. How does she look sooo good in every historical hair style and makeup!?!!!! (I guess that’s why she’s a model, but still! 😳) and i love her interaction with your comments throughout the video and her reaction at the end.
She has the perfect hair for this style. My hair wouldn’t even cover half of the bun ring. Plus my hair is so straight it would take forever.
This is a surprisingly simple shape, at heart. Absolutely stunning - aside from the fussiness of it, I wouldn't hate it if this shape came back in style!
It would be great to see a re-creation of some of the more crazy hairstyles of the 1830's (Biedermeier hairstyles)! Such a fun and kooky decade style-wise!
Since I have very fine hair, I’ve been sort of working on getting some hair rats together for some volume when I do an updo, and after about three years I’ve got two nice hair pads collected from my first-day (after washing) brush. Between that and (as another viewer pointed out) some of the more noticeable dry shampoos, I’m reeaaallllyyy tempted to try this. 😅 I could go for some Marie A. Halloween look or something; I’ve got time to practice at this point!

Also, the model’s reaction was awesome! She has such a wonderful smile. It’s endearing and somehow kind.
try the pomade + dry shampoo (powder) together. The way those two things work together is how ladies got these big hairstyles back in the 1700s without the use of hairspray. It makes your hair like 3x thicker.
If you decorated it with some pearls flowers or feathers it would be even more beautiful!! Amamzing work however! Bravo

I just watched Marie Antoinette, fun to watch but to be taken with a grain of salt. They styled Kirsten Dunst's hair like this - suddenly i was in a rabbit hole of researching the monarchy during her reign, fashions, hair powders....I had quite the education today. And now this!!! Topped it off quite nicely. 😉

Interestingly, in the mid 70's (1975) us southern girls liked this one for parties and going out. It was worn a bit flatter on the crown, but still done this way ala Dolly Parton.
I’d love to see some 1870’s and 1880’s hairstyles! I do a lot of Victorian costuming but I always have a heck of a time getting my hair to look right!

Thank you so much! What I'd love to see is 18th century hair and makeup done with period accurate materials. Obviously ceruse and rouge are out-- but kaolin and rice powder were both used thousands of years ago, and cochineal and beetroot were very much known in the 1700s. As for suet based pomade, less disgusting than it sounds: suet is indefinitely shelf stable. It'd be lovely to know what this look would have looked like with authentic tools and products.

In 1984, I went to a costume party as Marie Antoinette. I had a long curly perm,. I just fluffed it up and used quite a few pins. Great results.

Good question
there wasn't much difference for women of fashion. The colonial women followed the British fashions very closely. That being said, powder was more popular in France than in England, so the less-powdered look was more of an English thing.
Could you please do a tutorial about 1860s English hair style and make up ?

I now understand why they had the curl down on the shoulder or two in the back, because it was like a cute "oh look my hair fell out of the curl, how cute" even though it was intentional. Watching her put together this look made me realize how these styles came about.

I don't know how possible it is, but I would be very interested to see you create these harstyles with historically accurate products. Like the animal fat you talked about instead of hairspray.
Look up a UA-camr called loepsie she tries to recreate these kinds of hair styles with some degree of historical accuracy (using pomade and powder and instruction guides from the actual time period). She does a pretty good job of it too

Just look up Victorian period hair styles & fashion...specifically the early Victorian period.
Can you show how they did one of the sillier hair styles of the 18th century like the ones with a ship under sail or one with a bird cage and a bird (faux bird) lol.
Hairpieces (extensions), grease (hairspray), and lots of extra padding (hair rats and bun forms for a modern version)...most likely wigs for the really grandiose ones.
I would love to see your interpretation of Marie-Antoinette's hairstyle coiffure a l'enfant that she is wearing in her infamous portrait by Vigee-LeBrun. The queen is wearing a hat in the portrait. I've wondered what it is supposed to look like without it.

I first saw Kate in the Dickenson Chrismas video and thought she did an amazing job. The video was so well put together like all your other videos that it had drawn me in. I felt the cold wind. I had almost cried with the bakery scene. Please keep up the amazing work. Also I know this may seem like a simple request but could you possibly do a Jane Eyre inspired hairstyle or dress video?

hairstyling manuals!!! we have hair tutorials today... they did back then too! they were just written in pamphlets and books :-)!!!
This would probably be the sort of hairstyle an affluent woman would wear. Affluent women would have maids that were trained specifically to style their hair and do their make up. Less affluent women would try to recreate the hairstyles worn by the rich with whatever means were available to them (so probably a less complicated version of this hairstyle), and poor women would wear very simple buns whose purpose was to keep the hair away from their faces while they worked. Not everyone in the 18th century could afford a hairstyle like this!
there were professional hairdressers that would come round to your house and style your hair with pomade and powder and all the fluff - and curiously they were commonly male hairdressers :-D

it's a very 1770s hairstyle - the really tall hair like this was surprisingly in fashion for a relatively short amount of time.

Middle part and a low bun or chignon. It wasn't an elaborate period for hair.

Now I know how our families did it in the past... That is so cool... I will never do it myself unless have a help do it. I always loves how our women in the past used the old time dress.
Sugar water is even stronger than spray or gel..and doesnt harm the hair. At that era wigs were used..and later it was sugerwater. 50/50 sugar and water. I allways style my hair with suger water. Holds perfectly and easy to rinse out with water . No shampooing needed to remove.

You can also use dry shampoo as a volumizer & powder. Works quite well.

What would they have used instead of hair spray? I know their hair would have been pretty filthy due to the lack of bathing and all the powder etc so would that have sufficed?

The pomade and powder (animal fat and starch, basically) would actually have held up the hair pretty well. These updos would usually be kept in for days at a time.
I wouldn't say their hair was "filthy." Modern people wash frequently, which makes us greasier (our scalps don't like being that "clean"), so we have to wash again. People who wash less frequently tend to produce less oil, once their body has had time to get used to it.
Similarly, modern people apply oils to make our hair more manageable.
They had a different hygiene routine but it wasn't necessarily worse. I have a friend with very fine thin hair who switched to the historical way of caring for her hair (pomade, powder) and she is very pleased with the volume she gets, and her hair smells amazing, as well.
Possibly a modern person sent back in time would be put off by the scents of the era, but so too would a person from that time traveling forward be put off by OUR smells.
Noses grow accustomed to what they smell. To us, modern cleaning chemicals and modern imitation scents and what modern hygiene smells like is "normal" but it would be unsettling for someone who wasn't used to it.
As a side note, the products they put in their hair made it much easier to achieve the hairstyles they wanted. With modern products the poor model had to practically swim in hairspray. With historical ones, the hold takes much less work.
Think of how hard it is to achieve a fancy pinned updo on squeaky-clean freshly-washed hair. We get around that by typically only doing that kind of style rarely. They got around it by having their hair in a state where the style was easily possible, via products and haircare routines.
@@annedavis3340 but they bathed once a month.... gross! All that build up of powder and grease, apparently some peoples wigs had mice and lice and all kinds of horrors in them?!
@@joywalsh6150 if you really think people wore wigs with mice in them, I really don't know how to help you, hun. The wigs cost a LOT of money. They were very well taken care of.
