The Swiss speak 4 different languages, not counting English. The Swiss Guard has been awesome for 500 years.

Switzerland has four language regions: German, French, Italian and Romansh. The number of German, Italian and Romansh speakers is falling, while French speakers are increasing. Non-national languages are also gaining in importance. The two most widely spoken non-national languages are English 45 % and Portuguese. Multilingualism is an essential part of Switzerland's identity.

Well the swiss where also known for suplying huge mercenary armies for who had money to pay for them . They where also part of the old lotheringia the area that is now the netherlands belgium luxembourgh, Alsace-Lorraine and northern italy. (Lombardy -Venitia and turin region) Regions that have been known to be in the think of every major conflict of the past 2000 years.

That kind of thing, until then Swiss mercenaries faced other Swiss mercenaries, well understood for other countries.

to answer your question about the little part that isn't holly roman empire ( at the begging of the video) : it's the all mighty republic of venise. On of the first democratie of europe, and back in the day, one of the strongest state (even if it was just a tiny city state => you know, economy and best commerce fleet of all time).

Its a hard place to conquer is the main reason. Yes its small, but the amount of time and resources you'd need to take it would stop you from doing anything else, and while your attacking it, your exposed to attacks from the other big empires.

I keep the video "How and why did Switzerland become Neutral?" rather for something incomprehensible (drawings; who is who..).
The neutrality goes back to the years 1814/1815 (Vienna Congress).
In the 1st and 2nd world wars, however, it became important and was put to the test.
The infrastructure (transport routes east/west and especially north/south) was of particular interest to the warring parties in World War I and World War II.

Connor, it is a staggeringly, staggeringly beautiful country: they have 3 or 4 official languages, with German and French being the main ones. Lakes and mountains.... people speak English better than those in England. You could eat your luch off the streets of the main cities, it is so utterly clean. However a sandwich and a beer will wipe out your bank balance.... it is damned expensive there!! Every car seems to be a Mercedes, as are all the taxis.

I don't like the video you reacted to. It is accurate, but hard to understand if you don't already know some things about european history. Also many things are severely simplified.
A better video about swiss neutrality is "Why is Switzerland Always Neutral?" from "General Knowledge". Link: ua-cam.com/video/MjjyJLHN33k/v-deo.html
    Still interesting reaction. Thank you.

Switzerland was invaded by Revolutionary France in 1798, then was part of the post-Napoleon system until 1848. What is relevant is the post 1848 period. From 1848 forward, Switzerland was a competing primary bank for all the European countries and plutocrats. Also a great place for radical exiles like Lenin. And remained so a long time ... though its importance as a gold standard bank has declined from 1914 forward (other global taking part of their business, including BIS) and finally off gold entirely in 1999 (already 28 years after Nixon's action against gold in 1971). Secret banking for tax/law evasion became big from 1910, and was only eliminated in 2018 ... and since then Switzerland is EU's bitch. Fortunately my Swiss ancestors left for America around 1750. Qaddafi (2009) and ISIS (2014) have tried to restore a gold dinar. Currently China and Russia are planning on destroying the Petro-Dollar (from 1971) and part of that is tied into a gold backed ruble and yuan. Large quantities of Western gold was purchased, taken to Switzerland to be melted down and refined to standard purity and weight for the Chinese market.
