The image of the Queen sitting alone at her husband's funeral is so painful. I am not a royalist but I am a humanist, I just see an elderly lady all on her own in her grief. Left to sit alone when she should have been surrounded by her family and loved ones for support. The image of Charles standing is another one, just a grieving, broken man who has just lost his mother: the rock in his and so many of our lives.
Your words at the end were very meaningful and heartfelt

Of course the Queen, on becoming queen, as such a young age, famously and publicly. vowed to serve her country and her people, whether her life be long or short. And she did it for so long. Yes that was Prince Philips funeral, during lock down. It's heartbreaking. But I, for one, am so proud of being British. Not of everything this country has done, some of it was shameful, but things were were different. then We did though, start the abolition of slavery. For that we can be very proud. All the magnificence, the ceremony, the pageantry, and in the middle of it all was not only the nation's grandmother, but of every one of those taking part. Each one of those soldiers, sailors and airmen who took turns carrying her coffin were not only thinking of her as Queen. Look at Prince Charles's face, that's not the face of a man glorying in the fact that he is now King, it is a man who is saying goodbye to his mother.

We have been the good guy for centuries - despite the bad things we have done too..... life is never perfect but we have always strived to be the best and do the right thing whatever and wherever....... Thanks for your great words. Elizabeth was the pinnacle of all that is good about the UK and the Commonwealth!

A man who has just lost his mother, a man who has assumed the heavy mantle of monarch and a man who has had to do that in full view of the entire world with the calm dignity that the role requires. For most in Britain the shock and grief were palpable and for many the loss of the Queen represented or reflected the loss of a family member because she was a constant in their lives. The beauty of monarchy is its continuity and stability over and above political turmoil and global upheaval. It provides a focus for national unity in times of crisis and celebration and projects an image of our nation to the wider world. It sets a tone of what it is to be British. The reign of Queen Elizabeth II will be defined as an era in the long history of the United Kingdom and she will stand very tall amongst the ranks of her predecessors.
Thank you Connor for your impassioned response to this moving video. Your British roots are showing.

The music to ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’ is of course by Gustav Holst but the lyrics are by Sir Cecil Spring Rice who was UK ambassador to the USA before the First World War and who was instrumental in persuading President Woodrow Wilson to abandon American neutrality

Thank you Connor, for what you said. I was in tears too.
I was born in Coronation year too, my father was in the Regular Army, with many Service relatives. So, in some ways the Queen was a more immediate presence in my life than some people might experience. (Although, no, I never met her).
I'm English first and British second, and I'm proud of what my country has contributed to the world.
Of course we are not perfect. No one is but we have done at least as much good in the world as we have done ill. Which may be our saving grace. In theory we have principles, in practice we don't always live up to them. Sometimes we end up being expedient.
Our Queen gave her life in our service. Her decisions weren't always right (we talked about perfection didn't we?) and not always popular, but we loved her. It hurts to know that she is gone.
