thank you for your thoughtful opinion. felt good to hear that. most people just blame switzerland for trading with the nazis, collecting jewish gold etc. etc. I wonder what they'd have done... in situations like these you are forced to take questionable actions. they did what was best for their people. Kind regards a swiss 🇨🇭🫡

It was the Blitzkreig. They over-ran France in 6 weeks and France essentially had a WW1 army. Britain was also massively under-equipped at that time, so we can't point any fingers.

All in all good video with also fair and surprising good comments (especially at the end)
When I have US or British colleagues friends in my house and tell them that the reach of German artillery could have flatten it 20miles South of River Rhine - while the Swiss ones had only half of the German reach........ it opens their minds.
Aside of it just for points from a Swiss with a bit a broader understanding of what happened:
Yes right, the reason to prevent the Germans attack was more complexe.
    1) German/Italian logistics for the south front was passing the Swiss Alps, I got teached that in highschool in the 1970ties, so it was not a secret already then - Switzerland required the open boarders for food and basic goods - so cooperation with Germany was part of the required steps as otherwise Switzerland would have run out of food within a year (but we survived 4.5years) - And Yes our Government was committed to the survival of Switzerland as their constituational duty.
and my Dad became angry when I told him - as the stereotypical brain washed opinion in the country was: It was only due to the Army.
    2) As you rightly commented, most Swiss are not aware, General Guisan made an (illegal - violation of neutrality - cooperation ) deal with France - you mentioned that in the beginning and I saw you struggled......) indeed France would have defended the Swiss Jura bow from Basel to Geneva down into the Swiss Midlands. Defacto, in case Germany would have attacked Switzerland, France and Switzerland would have become Brothers-in-Arms.
The German Wehrmacht found the evidence of that not-Neutral-approach in the docs of the surrendered French Eastarmy in Lyon 1940, and brought the evidence to Berlin where in April 1945 the Russian Red army found it.
Right after the falling of France, Guisan changed his strategy. In this context Buero HA started to have its hand in the game.
Till today (or at least 1989 due to Willi Gautschi) the family of General Guisan is not opening the Generals (now their family) personal notes to historians, to get more light into that chapter.
(Source: How I understood the Historian Willi Gautschi, in his book about General Guisan written 1989 with access to the russian libraries)
    3) The international banking clearance system installed after the deep depression, The Bank of International Currency Exchange BIC, located in Basel, had to approve and clear every transaction of Swiss banks with non Swiss banks.
The 3 top managing directors of the BIC during WW2 were all US-Americans.
So how likely was it, that the White House & Capital Hill was informed of every transaction done during the WW2?? -
Well this evidence whether FDR's administration was aware what's going on between the Swiss and the German banks, you only could find in the USA. The official position as far as I heard, of course every early knowledge and understanding did not exist......
So the various deals after the war done to settle wrong doings by Swiss banks which certainly happened during the War had most probable a certain level of political will more of the current "Zeitgeist" than really reached the level of a fair agreement.
(the one in the 1950 was maybe to mild as the USA required all countries to aligne as the cold war was about to start - See how many proven Nazis were used as "advisors" for many things in the USA, while the one around 2000 was in a way legally pre-settled by the one in the 50ties - but nobody carried as the priorities to support the still living surving victims of the Holocaust was understandbly higher)
The existence of lost accounts of victims of war in Switzerland around Y2K was also a technical side-effect of how account accesses has been orchestrated.
In Switzerland no account expires while in the USA accounts with no proven living owners fall back to Uncle Sam after a certain period of time.
    4) Switzerland during the war was foremost a place where all secret services and intelligence organizations were active.
Information & technology transfer especially of "stranded" German airplanes happened in ftf manners
So a small piece of the reason could be that all Switzerland was a kind of country-wide Rick's bar in the "Casablanca" movie..........

    In the military we still get told;
Our goal isnt to win, as we simply cant win against superpowers. Our goal is to stay defensive and take as many men and as many recources down with us.
This obviously makes it way less attractive to sttack us, compared to bigger nations that could be invaded at the same cost. Essentialy keeping us out of war completely

The Netherlands wasn’t ready to surrender, and more or less prepared to hold out a bit longer. If it wasn’t for the Germans threatening the Dutch to level many cities in the west of the country. After the Luftwaffe destroyed the city centre of Rotterdam, the Germans warned to do the same to Utrecht, Amsterdam, Haarlem & The Hague. That’s when Dutch armed forces surrendered.

France. They capitulated because they lost the first half of the battle, Belgium, northern France, and the Maginot Line. Left was only the reserves in the south. Also, Italy attacked in the south. The French government couldn't muster a new WWI with a lot of casualties. They fucked up and they knew it.

France was militarily defeated. They had no real chance of any success. It might have taken another few weeks for the Germans to reach the Spanish border but the French wouldn't be able to stop it. Also the terms were not as bad as we think of today. Germany didn't occupy all of France in the first years. Being able to retain the nation with about 2/5 occupied or absolute collapse made more sense then that what we see in hindsight. They also maintained their Empire throughout the world. History gets highly simplified. The armistice made much more sense at the time.

And not only that, they were tactically obsolete, the army didn't have radios (not even the tank regiments) they were still using WW1 tactics and communicating with telephone, which was more slow to make reports to their HQ, their Generals were the ones that stalled for years the modernization of the French army, that's why the General De Gaulle criticized the high French command a lot after (he commanded has lieutenant colonel one of those armored regiments but his tanks got destroyed by the stukas) and was at moment of their defeat promoted to General, the French started their rearmament later than the British so they had far less planes and tanks, but, the only thing they had in their advantage was that they had a heavy thank that outmatched all German tanks, but, that's when the famous stuka had his hour of glory.

France surrendered so swiftly because its overall war strategy failed. It leaned on its defensive Maginot Line, which would’ve stopped a German advance, but foolishly neglected to consider if Germany might thrust through Belgium into France. Even though Germany did so in World War One.
    Shockingly dumb.
And unlike England and Russia which had natural geographic defenses, France had nothing.
The United Kingdom was guarded by the English Channel, and the Russians had vast lands into which they could fallback.

@@SisuTheShatteredthe Swiss army is a bit of a joke really (within Swiss society).... It's not sufficiently equipped (and mostly outdated) and the lackluster morale (given that most people don't actually want to go), plus a complete lack of real world applications makes it feel a bit like pretend play. No one really knows what they're doing, there's no real threat, and the equipment is outdated and wouldn't stand up to a real conflict. Most time is being spent doing discipline stuff, long marches and such that isn't really related to warfighting activity. Mind you, recruits go home after basic training so it's not like they maintain their fitness, so what's it all about? It seems more like a US marines movie boot camp reenactment. Just silly.
We have a new air defense system (Patriot) but only bought 70 block3 interceptors... Like, wtf are you going to do with that? Nothing. When I was recruited they didn't even issue body armor as standard. So they wanted us to fight for Switzerland without body armor? Or they'd tell recruits that the life expectancy after disembarking an APC for infantry was 7mins?!!? I mean you can't make that s*** up.

The US couldn't win vietnam, and they just dug out tunnels in mud and sand, barely 3 feet under ground. Switzerland has bunkers inside mountains, and all over strategic chokeholds. Of course anyone could invade us if they really want. The question is at what cost, and for what ? Zero military valuable ressources. And today even more so then in WW2, just transport stuff by air, or ships, or use French/austrian paths through the alps. The cost to secure switzerland without endles guerilla attacks is just not worth it.

Or simplified: France made a tactical mistake and thought that it is impossible to send troups from the Ardennes (Natural barrier). So they send most of their troups to the french Belgian border. Later the germans done the impossible and send troups via the Ardennes in the back of the french army, cut their supply lines and without ammo the french troups surrendered.

First mistake, Switzerland is not a mix of other countries. Swiss are Swiss, nothing else and if they speak French, Swiss-german dialect, Swiss-Italian dialect and Rumantsch you cannot assimilate them to other countries. Try to say to the French speaking Canadians they are French......
Second mistake, the Swiss army uniform cannot, in no way, be confused with Wehrmacht's. The only things that could be approaching is the helmet. Officers hat are so different from those of the German that you have certainly watched the wrong movie.
Third mistake, training of young boys. Again the wrong movie, shooting training for youngsters exists in Switzerland, if I'm not mistaking, from 19th century and still exists today... nothing to do with the Hitlerjugend, BDM or Italian ballila. These movements were created for political education, in Switzerland never. And for the Swiss, shooting is not related to any political movement, not like USA with the NRA.

The most problematic in your message is the link made between Swiss, Italian and German youth movements. For the rest, Kragen und Abzeichen auf dem Kragen was common to more than 50% of armies in the world at that time, it was à la mode in the military circles. For the helmet, the Swiss one was developed after various tests in firing range and so was the German Stahlhelm too from his variant 42 on. Switzerland wasn't invaded because we collaborated. We organized transport between Germany and Italy, we were the only country accepting the German currency so they could still buy on the international market etc.
