  • Updated for 2024 are both of the #triumph #scrambler 1200s - well, updates can also mean downgrades but the price is reflected and the rideability and accessibility don't seem to have been affected... or have they? Regular BikeSocial road tester, Adam 'Chad' Child flew to Triumph's off-road centre near Malaga to find out with this on-and-off-road #review

    Thanks for the informative review. I learned from it.
    At 5’11” and a 32” inseam, I think (hope) I can handle the XE just fine.
    I have one on order, and am waiting impatiently for delivery.

    I bought a 1200X and love it to bits. IMO it's basically an up specced 1200 Street Scrambler which is EXACTLY what I wanted. I also have an Enduro bike, for serious off roading, which is actually taller than a XE and 100kg lighter so a XE or XE never interested me. The only gripe I have with the X is the TC in ROAD mode is way too intrusive but using SPORT or configuring a RIDER mode gets round this. Personally I'm not really bothered about what badge is on the brakes or suspension so long as they work well and they do just that.👍

    @glen2332 5 місяців тому +2

    The outgoing xc model is a lot more bike that the x. The x does not have adjustable suspension or cruise control, while it has a lower seat height, if you get the accessory low seat for the xc the seat height ends up 5mm lower than the x.

    Making a “classic” fuel tank without the cheap looking pinch-weld is almost reason enough to buy the rest of the bike. Why Triumph doesn’t use a similarly beautiful tank on their other retro bikes is baffling.

    Nice to see Triumph reducing prices, and it's good to see there is a key in the ignition. Both of those dash/clocks are awful. As an older guy I find the info on the clocks way too small.

    Terrible decision by Triumph: those of us in the demographic to buy this bike would have paid the extra $$. When cut value but still have to pay a lot - consumers like me will look elsewhere. The used market just became more valuable
    And piss on all the reviewers trying to sell it like this isn’t Triumph’s version on becoming more economic - rubbish. They keep this up they will go the same way Harley did - barely surviving

      I agree. I am 5'7"" and have been considering the XC because it had a lower seat height than the XE. Now they screwed the pooch with this new X. I would have paid the premium price if they would have just come out with a lowered suspension version of the XE/XC. They took away all of the good bits away now. The only thing I care for with the X, is it has a real key. This seems to be more of and upgraded scrambler 900 than the 1200.

    When even a sub £6k Himalayan has much, much better clocks and functions than either of these two bikes, it makes you wonder about the quality on the rest of the bike. They look nice but too heavy for anything serious off road, drop one and it could prove to be costly in more ways than one.

      I think the 'better function' is the ability to mist up with condensation as soon as the bike is out of a showroom? or a fuel guage that sticks all the time? Happened to both my himmies. Personally I find the X/trident clocks a bit plain but functional and readable in all conditions. The XC/XE clocks are an unreadable mess to me one reason i rejected an xc after a test ride [also wanted lean sensitive ABS on a bike that expensive afer all my cheap ktm 390adv has it].

      @@Steve-motorcycles fair enough. the new Himmy has modern screen but is too new to know whether theyve fixed the misting and other 'character features' that i got for free with my EUR5 411 bikes. Not knocking RE, theyve revived the smaller bike market but I will wait to see how it fairs in uk climate especially as its no longer the cheap option. I would be more interested in the scram version anyway but I reckon its gonna come in much heavier than the 400x.

    Imagine if Ducati or KTM built a 1200cc motorcycle that only made 89 peak horsepower? Comon Triumph! You mean to tell me you can't make a 1200cc generate stonking horsepower at peak and still be completely calm and tractable when you want it to? You're starting to act like Harley Davidson.

      @@sp33d35 That's because they have managed to downgrade that air-cooled 1078cc engine so badly to comply with Euro5 and keep it in the fleet, one way or another. It originally started in the Monster in 2009.
      I'm referring to engines of similar build, which would be liquid cooled.

    • @sp33d35
      @sp33d35 5 місяців тому +2

      @@exothermal.sprocket ok with you now and yes, Triumph can get more out of the LC bonnies. Look at the TEC cams. I guess the shift to LC was about reducing noise and dropping the cost of meeting future EU emissions without redeveloping.
      That said, this is a scrambler platform .. a character bike for gnarly pot holed b-roads not a sports naked..Triumph has other bikes for that niche that compete on performance.
      I am not a triumph fan but if you want higher HP in a scrambler there isnt much choice. Ducati 1100 is lower torque by some margin. Beemer GS urban ? more poke but I wouldnt take it down a cinder track and the boxer engine isnt for me [had a R1200GS].
      I'd take a 20kg
      weight drop over an extra 30hp anyday. Maybe its time for a svartpilen 790 scrambler to hit the market.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 5 місяців тому

      @@sp33d35 I suppose people might make excuses for Triumph's 1200 all day long. I just don't believe the engine is being held back for emissions purposes or because it would become unwieldy off the pavement or some other genre-based assumption. It's a 1200cc twin. It should make better power. Longevity just wouldn't be affected as people don't run these types of engines at high revs around a race track. Cams and increased valve size would probably wake it up a whole lot.
      Yamaha's Super Tenere is also 1200 and it does make better power (even though it could do more).

    • @phils2180
      @phils2180 4 місяці тому +4

      I think you're missing the point here or you've obviously done no off road riding. The design brief of the Triumph Scrambler was to give it proper off road capability and you don't need or want monster power for that. Plus they're retro styled classics and built appeal to fans of that genre. If you want more power look to their modern road or adventure triple range.
