As always an entertaining and thought provoking review of the machine that in my opinion is the most attractive "scrambler" from an aesthetic perspective in current production, and indeed as you point out, arguably the most "true to genera" in terms of the basic historical concept of a basic "scrambler" in the Triumph range (massive bonus is that you don't look too bloody big for it so the rest of us taller chaps are going to be OK) Seriously though, the 900 Scrambler is in my humble opinion, right up there with the 1st edition Speed Twin as being one of the most beautiful machines the Bloor Triumph backed company have ever produced. It frustrates me considerably that Triumph didn't decide to give it a bit more suspension travel as in about 180 mm up front (FGS with conventional forks PLEASE) and alloy rims as per the 1200 series.I firmly believe Triumph made an error of judgement here. If you look at the massive upgrade in suspension, brakes and spec on the 1200 series scramblers for actually, not such a massive difference in price, and then think about deleting the totally unnecessary "keyless" function, an ugly computer instead of T100 analogue clocks, twin Brembo 50's (really on a scrambler?) and ugly USD forks, err... well actually, the 900 could have been the best scrambler Triumph produced. I genuinely think they should have only produced a premium 900 and the 1200 XE. Check the registration sales data and you will see my point.
With the 400x being almost half the price, I would imagine it will take a lot of customers away from the 900, plus with the 400 being lighter it would make more sense for occasional off road use. Again with the average age of motorcyclists getting older then lighter is probably becoming more popular.
I’ve put 35,000 miles on mine in 2 years, serviced regularly with no problems. It’s beautiful (mine is red), but also, it’s a workhorse….has never let me down when touring. Draws a lot of attention, I’m always approached at gas stations, etc. Agree about the analog display, it fits the old school style, as does the headlamp. Just an incredibly fun motorcycle to ride and own.
I had a transalp 750 2023 done about 1200 miles on it, a great bike but I just couldn’t bond with it I felt like I was a courier rider , so I went completely the opposite way and got the 900 and I just think it is great it’s got a SOUL if anyone knows what I mean 🏍🏍🏍👍
The look and the FEEL of these classic retro styled bikes is what's making them so popular IMO. As a refugee from years of Japanese Superbike ownership, GSXR's, R1,s, Fireblades etc, I don't even give such bikes a second look these days. I still own a big bore Kawasaki but my Triumph twin is my go to bike for 90% of my riding.👍😀
I've had my 2019 Street Scrambler Sandstorm edition for a year now and I love it! Looks great, sounds great, comfortable, easy to ride and enough real world power for any situation. In short, a fun bike that will put a smile on your face.
I think for a scrambler lighter is better than more power and for that reason I really would consider the 400 scrambler but that DOT4 chip dip cup has me really tempted. Great vid thank you.
When it came time to buy a scrambler, I chose the Duc and have loved it for 3 years. However now that I ended up with a 3rd bike, its time to sell the Duc, and I've got to say, it hasn't been easy (here in the USA). If I had gone with the Triumph, I bet it would be sold by now.
Absolutely love my scrambler 900 - just completed 10,000 miles. The suspension is deeply disappointing as with so many triumph models but the rest of the bike is a delight, particularly the engine - no need to rev, loads of power from very low revs and the 270 crank not only makes a great sound but helps deliver the power in a delightful way. I'm going to try the new 1200X but I very much doubt it will be such a well balanced package as the 900. I have learned my lesson over the years - more is not always better.
Hey bro I'm also a 900 owner and want to upgrade to 1200x you mind giving an update or insta info so we could keep in touch on the differences ? I would appreciate your feedback on the 1200x, and value your judgement as I would my own, seeing as how we both agree on "more isn't always better"
I want to get the 400x as my first bike ever, but considering that a new bike vs a used bike costs almost the same, i'm also considering putting a few more bucks in and getting the scrambler 900. Unsure yet if that would be a good fit as first bike. Thanks for the video!
I have a 2022 Street Scrambler and love it to bits but my perfect bike would be a 1200cc version, NOT the oversized and ugly 1200XE. The new 1200X is about as close to that in both looks and riding position as you're going to get straight off the showroom floor so I intend to test ride one. My SS (and potentially 1200X) is purely for road miles and for that it's superb. I have done a couple of very tame green lanes on it but, as an enduro bike owner I just can't envisage wrestling any of the Triumph Scramblers off road. Has the SS 900 still got a place in the range! ABSOLUTELY 100%👍😀
I owned a triumph scrambler 900 about 7years ago. Every time I rode it , I felt like Steve McQueen. Very high up in the grin factor. I traded it in for a BMW R1200GS. because I need a decent bike for touring. I miss that bike. If I had the money I would buy another one. I now have a Triumph T120. Its better for touring , but doesn't give me the grin factor
This is my favourite bike. Add, bigger mudguards, headlight grill and bar end mirrors, beautiful. I'm 5'4" and I've sat on one, perfect for me. Knobbly tyres to cope with Devon roads. BUT it's the pot for my Jack Daniels sauce that sold it to me 😁
i just put the money down for a scrambler 900 chrome edition, the last one that they have, gonna get it in early feb and im so exited to get it! and as always, great video!!
I have a 2022 street scrambler. Love it! It's my second bike and it's so comfortable I often take it for long highway driving as well as country roads.
I don't know why I love the 900 Scrambler so much, but I want one as a second bike. I'd use my big ADV for a daily rider, and ride this one to the pub and admire its beauty.
Thanks for the video! Great stuff. I gotta say for the last 8 or so years I've always considered this Scrambler the most timeless and kind of essential Bonneville. Obviously the t100 is the core bike but it changes every once and then. I just think the scrambler 900 is the most perfectly proportioned (visually) bike and sits in the Goldilocks zone as far as power and size. It also had the classic but cool aesthetic that anyone looking for a classic kind of bike would appreciate. More so the the t100 for me personally. Haven't ridden it myself but it has been on my short list since 2017 and I think that says a lot. Other bikes have gained and lost my interest over the years but this is just so close to a perfect version of what it's trying to be, that it's always going to garner interest and will always be desired. I think it will absolutely be a future classic once the 900cc engine is retired.
I am from Colombia. Here the triumph brand is very underrated. I had a bmw ninet scrambler and rigth now i have a f900r, and i got to say that im looking forward to get one of this beauty triumph scrambler. ❤
The Triumph Scrambler is undeniably beautiful but I just hate a muffer up around my legs and so have never owned one. To me, the T100 is better as a street bike. PS. for off road, I want something offroad specific aka lighter and with more suspension travel.
I part exchanged mine a few months ago. I loved most things about the bike except the engine. Past 60mph it was gutless. Despite the looks, in reality it is a street bike, but lacks any real top end. It actually reminded me of my previous 125cc bikes in that respect. That said, sound was amazing, it was handled very well and looked great, but just wasn’t enough for me.
First time seeing a Triumph Scrambler I think is when I watched Jurassic world, the bike Chris Pratt rode. Literally the most memorable thing about that movie for me lol, such a beautiful bike. Saw it before I became a motorcyclist. I've got a Harley Lowrider St as my daily rider right now, but good lord I still want to own one of these Scrambler 900s. Think I'll buy one as my secondary bike/ bad weather bike. Absolutely stunning machine!
That's your opinion on Bike Sure, mine is very, very different. They're just a bunch of brokers for the same old underwriters and they are not, in any way, a bargain or premium service. Nice bike. Shame the pipes (right leg warmers) are in the wrong place. Safe riding to you and yours
I am a Cool Dude. Thanks for the compliment. Beautiful engine note. Lovely bike in so many ways. Suspension needs work, I've upgraded, still can take a big hit on Aussie roads. Will keep it for life most likely. Agree about the Clock also, heard criticism but its the pick of Triumph clocks personally
I have a 08 carbed 900 scrambler fitted out with accessories to allow me to ride dirt roads, do light touring and camping. I love the bike. I also often commute to work on it and “scramble” the backroads a real go to ride. I’m keeping it but put a deposit down on a 400x and await delivery at 68 I wanted something a bit lighter for around town and rougher trails. Will put on some nobby tires better bash plate and hi fender kit and off I’ll go. ❤ keep up your great reviews
couldn't agree more. That 900 engine is an absolute blast in all its platforms. Big enough to get a bigger guy or gal around and small enough that you can ring its neck and really feel what it has to offer in full. I ride a 2015 Triumph America LT, air cooled, which is an absolute blast as it has the 865, air cooled and possibly better than their liquid cooled, and I have yet to find a fault with that bike over the years I've owned it.
It looks gorgeous with a great engine and gearbox. I upgraded to the 1200 xc mostly for the improvement in ride quality. My biggest gripe with the 900 was its poor suspension.
That was my previous bike. A brilliant all-rounder and heaps of fun! The engine, as you say, is just superb - grunt everywhere within legal limits. I added the Fox rear shocks and put more road focused tyres on as I found the original tyres very vague in fast corners. I know it's not a sports bike but it's very capable in the twisties with the right set-up. It's the nearest you'll get to looking like Steve McQueen.
Taking into account that the first watercooled Scrambler 900 was just a customization package for the Street Twin, this motorbike is exactly what the Old Man described as a Scrambler: A slightly modified Street bike. And i completely agree with the assessment of the 900cc engine. It's also my favourite Triumph engine by far, and i do also own a Speedmaster 1200 beside my Street Twin.
Scrambler 900 got more retro vibes and styling, as you mentioned good for roads and some back country roads. I hope 'Triumph' makes the scrambler 900 'X' version too in future. Why I say this is that I got the scrambler 400X which has bigger handlebars in width, more suspension travel and bigger 43mm forks, front and back and more clearance for the seat height. It would be a nice upgrade in future to scrambler 900X (if ever get launched) or I have to keep my eye on the scrambler 1200X (once it gets launched in India), as it's seat height is much more approachable than those XC/XE, which can feel and give a good amount of confidence when going off road doing some trails.
This 900 is more the city faux scrambler of the bunch in my opinion. The xc/xe is the way to go for true scrambling. The x will likely make way to clear out then 900 eventually
I'd agree prior but not any more, the new 1200 Scrambler X is about the same height as this at 32" vs like 31.5" ish@@lilynorthover8378 if you want even smaller do like my MRs did and get a street twin 900 with a 30.12" seat height
Another great review. I love my scrambler. Btw I got my goldtop jacket today and it fits. Thanks for the info Keep up the good work. My fav channel on YT
Owning a BSA GoldStar i have no problem with mudguards that are just for fashion. I'm just like you, mudguards should be practical and do the job they were built for.
I sold my 1200XC because it was all wrong mice movie theater as gauges, high seat height, hot exhaust pipe… and it was neither an Enduro nor a touring bike… the 2020 900 Scrambler however I kept until now… because it was the Swiss knife of bikes… I thought of a bike for my wife and just made a down payment on the 400x…. apparently as good.. let’s see
I had the 1200 as a courtesy bike from Triumph Chester. Found it quite good fun. Tall & thin. Rode well. Slow speed clutch control seemed a little clunky. Wasn't a huge fan the exhausts, looks wise. Altogether though a nicely put together offering.
This is a very good bike, that is for sure: Perfect engine, high quality components, high quality finish, aesthetic design... The only thing that bothers me with this bike is the limited suspension travel. A bike claiming to have off road capacity should have at least 17-18 centimeters of suspension travel. Front and rear wheel travels of this bike is only 12 centimeters, same with street twin version.
I'm with you all the way on the "longer mudguard crusade". 'First accessory for my last three bikes? An Extenda Fenda; and even then, they're still barely long enough to protect the engine and my legs! :-)
I think in terms of how they feel, the 900s are actually a better retro than the 1200s. The engine sounds nicer, and the wider spacing of the 5spd transmission fits the character of the bike better. My only complaint is that the price difference between the 900s and 1200s isn't enough to easily justify buying the smaller bike.
The difference between the 900 and the 400 is easy to see in the flesh, one is built up to a quality and one is built down to a price especially the suspension and the brakes. The 900 is the sweet spot but a bit pricey the 400 is for those who can't afford the 900.
The chip sauce pot is a superb feature of this bike. I’m not into pseudo-scramblers but if others are then that is great. The greater the number of people on bikes, the louder our voice.
Beautiful bike, possibly in my eyes the prettiest bike on the market today. I loved the review. Also when I tried the dipping sauce that Triumph included for my chips, I found the taste a lovely malty flavor, if not a bit bitter. For some reason, my front brakes didn't seem to work as well on the way home after that. ; )
Those Triumph Scrambler are probably very versatile bikes, a do it all bike or perhaps the BMW Scrambler. But since I’m satisfied with my own choice I don’t have to make any decisions in this direction, so a big thanks for testing them out on our behalf in a decent manner. 👌🏻
Triumph has correct with the torque and revs - this bike could be compared with many at normal commuter rev range that might be about 1500 - 4500 revs... And succeed well.
it's only 7 kg lighter than the 1200 with way worse suspension. How is this any better for trails? To be fair it looks better. especially the green one
I owned a 2019 one as my first ever big bike after passing my test and really miss the sound of that engine. Had to change as the missus loves riding pillion, but the scrambler with that pin cushion seat didn't go down well. Now have the Tiger Sport 660 which is far better for 2 up, but still miss the sound of that 270 degree crank!
Love a scrambler me! ....and in particular that one, I must get a go on one again soon. Looking forward to seeing what you make of the 400 Scrambler in Spain - enjoy the launch!
Dont usually like ads but👍to Bikesure for a great quote. Lovely looking bike, they just need to put an extra long fenda extenda front and back that you can take off if not required. Looking forward to the 400 single review and getting a test ride.
When I can ride 400X at 100Kmph with ease, I don’t need the big brothers, especially in India where 400X is made (& costs just around 4K USD) and the big brothers are imported with a heavy import duty (& cost an arm and a leg) !!
I love my Street Scrambler, does everything I need it to, enough low down torque for the mainly mountain roads I ride in our area. Have done many 8-10 hour ride outs on it, not motorway but B roads, and it does the job admirably. The seat height on my 900 is 790mm and the new 400X it is 835mm - that is a considerable difference, probably too high for me as I'm 5'6"... so they may be aiming at the 'beginner' market (I hate calling it that) but they could already be losing some sales on that point and peeps may have to take the 400 Speed Twin. Maybe there's a lower seat option for the 400X though... I will test the new 400X out of curiosity when it shows up though.
A Scrambler is meant to be light, and easy to ride off-road; even if most people won't do that. So for that reason, I'd go for the 400X....... I wonder if Triumph will try to capitalise on their new off-road racing Factory racing programmes. The MX has been announced, but the Enduro news seems to have gone quiet; possibly as Enduro is dominated by 2 strokes......
It looks great, but if I were to get a scrambler it'd have to perform offroad, for which this is too heavy. That exhaust does make a fantastic noise though, so that alone might make it worth getting over the speed twin 900. But for offroading I'd look at a Fantic Cabellero 500, looks fantastic, and weighs only 150kg. Not even the new Scrambler 400X can match that.
Switching between your review of that white 900 Street Scrambler and this 900 Scrambler, what are the main differences exactly apart from a few little brushed aluminium pieces... because they both seem identical?
I love love love mine ..It is black like the one you rode .I have one that was a good priced left over from 2017 I got in 2018 so a little lower HP (slightly better MPG ? ) I added tiger dirt foot pegs and heated grips oh yes and a center stand ..I also made a wooden pannier that looks a lot like a WW2 ammo box for carying my rain suit and winter gear . ( In the summer it carries my banjo :) At 15 K miles I have gone through two chains and one sprocket . two and a half sets of tires ...I ride on farm lanes dirt roads and some long distence motorway work and all the way through the winter ..Also the bike has lived under a bag on a concrete slab through the New English snowy winters ... I wish for a slightly larger gas tank (the range is just under 170 miles ) but it is fine on low test gas .I do wish the suspention was a lttle better . It is a comfortable easy bike to take care of ..The higher exhaust means easy acssece to the chain tighteners .I have had many chances to trade this bike in but it is as close as I can find to the the perfect bike for my riding style and roads I ride ... PS I have a 30 inch inseam so the seat hieght is perfect for the crazy places I take her ...
For some reason Triumph have yet to address the front mudguard radius that doesn't follow the tyre, it look odd. I regret trading mine in and wish I'd kept it.
Love the bike but so wish triumph would put tubeless wheels on the bike. Same with the Bonneville range. Makes touring on these bikes a problem if you get a puncture and not fixable roadside really like tubeless.
I haven’t ride the 400, but I expect it to be very different compared to the 900. Probably the 400 needs to be rev higher to get some juice out of it. The 900 is very torque down low, which to my opinion is better... especially for older dudes 😉
I always liked the way the Scrambler 900 looked so I had a test ride on one and while it was pleasant to ride the performance was a bit underwhelming, it also felt diminutive for my 6.0 ft frame ( the Ol Man looked huge on it) I much preferred the 1200 which was huge amount of fun to ride and just seemed to fit me far better than the 900.
Assuming it's a bit smaller and lighter than the 1200s, it will suit some better and having more umph than a 400, it absolutely still has it's place. Great looking and sounding all rounder.
I live in a Rural area and YES, the 900 is definitely rellavent. Great for the dirt/gravel roads & has enough guts for the 2 lane black tops @ 65m.p.h. speeds. Would like to ride the 1200 but haven't seen any over here in the states. I do not like the black rims with the bright spokes. Absolute crap. Will never own another black or blacked out bike no matter what it is.
Yet again such high quality review from you guys. What would you say though; if you choose a Scrambler 900 over a T100 or a Speed 900, do you lose something in terms of tarmac riding?
Im weighing my option between the 900, 1200x scrambler or bonneville t120. Fyi it will be for my daily urban commuting with 3-4km freeway. Im 6 footer. Any view sir to assist my selection?? Thanks
Great review. I am really enjoying this since I bought it last year. The only issue is the tyres. These tyres are extremely bad in mud. I learnt this in hard way when the bike slipped on the mud thrwoing me off it. Fortunately, no one's hurt neither me or bike. I have seen that if this bike falls the handlebar takes lot of impact becauseof it's width and it may bend easily. Though the handle bar is super strong, but because the weight of bike is very heavy so when it falls it falls very hard. The barkbusters and crash guards really are good add ons to the bike especially if you are going off-road. Other than than this is my daily rider. It is swift in traffic, super easy to handle, has ton of torque which can get you from any situation. The sitting and standing ergoniomics are great too. Definaltely no the hardcore off-roader but with different tyres can concqure some of the tought roads.

I agree with you. I think triumph will take a hit on the bonneville sales. The idea of a lighter, cheaper bike appeals to many
Probably not in the Clarksonesque power obsessed western markets though.
@AlexOnABoat 😂 when you're halfway up, buzzing along on your 400, I'll be waiting up top for yas on my 900 lol
@@HeikkiPaanki I'd agree with you but I've got the 900 as well.
The 900 doesn't have power. The 1200 does, but not the 900.

I totally agree with you regarding the mudguards. For an alleged "scrambler" they are almost worse than useless.

I’ve owned my 2017 street scrambler from new fantastic bike for back roads and lanes . It’s also just the right size for shorter riders
I have a 2022 Street Scrambler and love it to bits but my perfect bike would be a 1200cc version, NOT the oversized and ugly 1200XE. Excellent. You're so right about the small/short mudguards: Fashionista form over function.
6:40 man that’s the brake fluid reservoir and for your dips😭😭

Most beautiful bike to ever leave the production line. My absolute dream bike!!

Awesome, how exciting 👍🏼
I have a 2022 street scrambler. Love it! It's my second bike and it's so comfortable I often take it for long highway driving as well as country roads.
I own one, it is a great bike. Bought in 2021, the grey. Call it Gandalf. Would buy it again... love it. Thank you for the vid, great job.
Seems to be a perfect bike for countryside riding. Must be the best looking Triumph scrambler as well!
😁👍

The Triumph Scrambler is undeniably beautiful but I just hate a muffer up around my legs and so have never owned one. To me, the T100 is better as a street bike.
PS. for off road, I want something offroad specific aka lighter and with more suspension travel.
That’s fair enough!
Im going to buy it solely based on the chip dip holder.
Your reviews just keep getting better and better. I've owned one of these since late 2018 and I just love it. Cheers
Me too ..And I love mine ..It is a loyal steed and a class act ...
Totally agree about pathetic mudguards on most bikes these days. Manufacturers must not test in wet weather 😮
Wow! You guys got an invite to Spain by Triumph! Good on yas! Congrats!
The other Scramblers are too tall for small people. 900 has it.
Thanks for the info
Keep up the good work. My fav channel on YT
Great to hear and pleased the jacket fits 👍🏼
The bike looked perfect in your stone cottage setting and sounded fab.
Owning a BSA GoldStar i have no problem with mudguards that are just for fashion. I'm just like you, mudguards should be practical and do the job they were built for.
Love the video. Thank you sir.
I sold my 1200XC because it was all wrong mice movie theater as gauges, high seat height, hot exhaust pipe… and it was neither an Enduro nor a touring bike… the 2020 900 Scrambler however I kept until now… because it was the Swiss knife of bikes… I thought of a bike for my wife and just made a down payment on the 400x…. apparently as good.. let’s see
As always, great video! Thanks a lot for all the work.
The dipping chips in sauce lol that was hillarious.
Cracking review, think i'll be having one in the new year 👍
Awesome 👍🏼
For some reason, my front brakes didn't seem to work as well on the way home after that. ; )
😂
Holy shit the "dip your chips in the brake fluid reservoir" joke got me laughing outloud in my office. Thanks for that lads.
I just bought one. Watched your video many times while waiting for registration.
Awesome, enjoy 👍🏼
I still think this is one of the best all around bikes ever made. Maybe I am biased as former owner haha!
I think the 900 is perfect middle ground for power but also keeping it light enough for trails for motocamping
it's only 7 kg lighter than the 1200 with way worse suspension.
It does sound fantastic straight out of the crate. Even better when de-catted.
So you probably don't want to know about Triumph's own bench seat option then?
@@AlexOnABoat bought one but the wife also prefers leaning back onto a back box! That doesn’t suit the Bonnie look at all
Love a scrambler me! ....and in particular that one, I must get a go on one again soon. Looking forward to seeing what you make of the 400 Scrambler in Spain - enjoy the launch!
It’s a brilliant bike! Thank you, Yes Darcy is really looking forward to trying it out 😁
@@MrDarcy-OlMan You not going too?
No just me (Darcy). Dads trying to avoid flying these days.
@@MrDarcy-OlMan What? Why???
@@TheMissendenFlyer he just doesn’t like flying haha 😂 I’m the opposite I love flying
If they cost you an arm and a leg, you wouldn't be able to ride them.
Great bike and presentation.... and what a lovely country you live in. Thanks.
Triumph just changed the name 👍🏼
6:34 Almost spat all of my water on my screen, that was so random 🤣
Fine, you've got the dip covered, now I was wondering where the chips go? ;)
I recommend DOT 3 over DOT 4 for dipping your french fries.
Really enjoying this channel youre both doing a great job. Love the countryside where you ride and absolutely love the Triumphs
Keep banging the drum for better mudguards. Who has time to clean the bike for an hour after every ride. Its wet the majority of the time in the UK!
Waiting for the 650 Royal Enfield scrambler
Great review. I have TSS 900/year 2019. I love that bike and engine❤
Love the bike but so wish triumph would put tubeless wheels on the bike. Same with the Bonneville range. Makes touring on these bikes a problem if you get a puncture and not fixable roadside really like tubeless.
what a classy rant on that front brake fluid reservoir at about 6:30 😂 had to play it twice 😂
nice to see the channel getting sponsorships :)
I haven’t ride the 400, but I expect it to be very different compared to the 900. Probably the 400 needs to be rev higher to get some juice out of it. The 900 is very torque down low, which to my opinion is better... especially for older dudes 😉
Love the chip dipper, sold! 🏍️🍟😂
900 is a good amount of cc. Just right ✅️ 👌
I live in a Rural area and YES, the 900 is definitely rellavent.
No tbh it’s just as good on the road. It’s not really an off road bike rather than a styling thing. The T100 probably has the better ride of the 3
Im weighing my option between the 900, 1200x scrambler or bonneville t120. Fyi it will be for my daily urban commuting with 3-4km freeway. Im 6 footer. Any view sir to assist my selection?? Thanks
I’d go for the T100; failing that, the T120 👍🏼
@@MrDarcy-OlMan thank you very much!! By the way nice review on the bike and all of the reviews on your channel. Keep on the good works 👍👍
I have been using Compare the market for years, much cheaper than any other place.
Looking forward to watch videos from you..thanks a lot..
Great review. thanks!
Thanks for watching!
She sounds beautiful grumbling along ❤
Cant wait for RE to make an interceptor scrambler
Love the bike love the white trousers 😮.
Weather in Spain should be lovely looking forward the that one
