The father coming home after midnight sounds like the most realistic point about the whole game. Japanese work culture can be freaking rough, with tons of overtime being expected
When I was living with a host family in Japan, the father could only come home on the weekends. The rest of the time he lived at his job two hours away. The work culture is definitely brutal
@@Graeldon That's honestly fairly mild. In Japan it's often expected of you to make befriend your coworkers including your boss and go to after work activities with them which as you can guess often take place after midnight and often involve alcohol. You're also often expected to work days you'd normally have off when asked even if the request comes last minute, sometimes literally and working through your breaks is in many places required. There is a law in Japan that requires a boss to give a valid reason to fire someone which is actually quite difficult to cheat however there's no real restrictions on the work you can be asked to do so if a boss wants to fire you they can just make you work stupidly long hours of boring menial tasks without overtime pay to make you quit while still expecting you to be all buddy buddy with them at the end of your work shift. In some extreme cases workers have actually been forced to stare at tv static and report any "abnormalities" or similar completely useless tasks. To say Japanese work culture is rough is the understatement of the century, it's actually so bad that death due to overworking are not only common but are considered an honerable death by some. As a person with a weak heart, it was actually my prescribed regimen to engage in extended exercise and push my limits. Of course, done with more tact and not...what this game does, but for all the nonsense there's a very slight grain of reality.

Wait, he has a heart condition in which he needs to keep his blood preasure up? Because that's what it sounds like. There's a fair amount of meds that can help you with that. No wonder father was so dismissive. He knew Goro was just making things up to take advantage of the situation o3o.
As someone who is trained in the dark arts of visual novels, this one looks...slightly below average. It's a very strange market, but maybe I can share some wisdom. After checking certain reputable sources, I found that Doki Doki Family DOES have explicit adult content that's not available on Steam. This is a fairly normal practice, but the way it's handled here is odd. Normally these lewd VNs will have a fade to white to indicate where the content is censored. Doki Doki Family just...pans away from the naughty bits without removing them? That's the first time I've seen that, and boy is it awkward. At least the art itself is...acceptable. Nothing fancy or grossly wrong, merely acceptable. As for the lack of an English dub, this is pretty common. I see a lot of VN enthusiasts strongly oppose the idea entirely, so that's how the market is. However, good localization is still very much appreciated. This script looks like it was Google translated, which is sadly commonplace for lower quality VNs like this one. It reeks of minimal effort and forethought. Overall, it's rather hilarious that this VN has the nerve to charge $20 on Steam for an incomplete version that doesn't really do anything special. Even more funny is how the Switch eShop sells it as well. I guess Steam couldn't contain the plague of low quality pr0n games to itself, and Nintendo was somehow the best place to spread. Who would have thought? Anyways, best of luck navigating the rest of Steam. You'll need it.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom! It's interesting that the first VN on Steam that I stumble onto just happens to be one of the worst adaptions of an adult VN. Go figure.
@@Graeldon Looking forward to your thoughts on AI: The Somnium Files when you finally get around to mid letter A territory! (That is, if you're up to play a roughly 50 hour VN lol.)
Yeah I've bought a couple vns that were in the 20-30$ price range and even without many branching paths they were still at least somewhere in the 30-80 hour range and had good translations. With h-scenes either vanilla enough for steam or available in a free patch off steam. There are so many better vns for reading or jerking it to for much less money I don't see who decided an aggressively average hentai game with no hentai and google translate should be going for 20$
The thing with the "barometric pressure"... it's phrased super awkwardly which is unsurprising given the quality of the localization, but where I live it would indeed be a perfectly normal thing to say should you un-awkward the phrasing. Just your regular "how's the weather" non-conversation, the pressure being brought up because the local lore says it has an effect on people's general feeling of well-being (low pressure is supposed to make you mentally sluggish for example). I can imagine it can be like this in other places too, and perhaps Japan is one of those places.
Oooh your first instance of an H-game! Let me introduce you to the wonderful world of H-game trivia. So, for starters, the backgrounds are indeed, assets, specifically I believe that classroom is from Tyrannobuilder, a visual novel engine that is popular among the japanese devs, so this is probably made with that engine. Taking that information into account, the options menu is probably auto-translated, while the game has been actually translated. (That's also on the choose options, which btw wouldn't make much difference taking into account how long the game is). All of this has been laid back in favour of, probably, paying a translator AND the voice acting. Voice acting is pretty important for the japanese and REALLY important for visual novels and a MUST on H visual novels, as far as common standards seem to go. Last but not least, the lack of H. Most of the time the H games on steam doesn't have any kind of H, you have to go somewhere else to download a patch to apply to the game to uncensor it, that's the reason of the weird lack of H in a game that is SO obviously an H game. This explains the lack of "character development" too. How do I know all of this? I should probably make a channel making reviews of H-games for the game side instead of the H. Sadly I don't think you'll find too many good games that were made as an H originally any soon, as steam has very few of them. Maybe magical girl Celesphonia, or Light and Shadow Doppleganger, or Prison Principal Karin, or Dohna Dohna (this one is amazing, persona 5 but with a bigger color palette and almost no H and a more down to ground story) but I've seen most of these on GoG rather than steam, and there's still a long run until you stumble upon those I believe. Anyways, still fun to see someone so not-versed about this kind of low-tier gaming stuff looking through it, it's interesting to see how an actual clueless person gets confused for things that for me seem so obvious and justified. Have a nice one.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and share your knowledge! I think there is potential in having a channel that reviews H-Games, but you might not be able to do that on UA-cam... not without heavy censorship anyway
Dohna Dohna had plenty of H, it's an Alicesoft game so just also a lot of game in between. And you seem to only account for the H in a visual aspect, but the game has forced prostitution in its gameplay loop. Now I think Dohna is a great game as well, but that makes it impossible to recommend to people who aren't comfortable with Eroge regardless of how much you see of it.
If you are going to make a channel about shit like that , i think the viwers of your vídeos will not give a fuck for your content and just be there for this stupid games
@@covereye5731 I digress, as GTA has also a prostitution silly mechanic but It means almost nothing. In this case the prostitution serves as a mechanic quite clear in a context in which illegal goods are harder to import and sex slavery of whatever is inside the country is an easier tool. But yeah I only count H as direct visual or described through text, which Dhona doesn't does too much as for the basic game loop, just a short image on the hustle screen.
The game is indeed a nsfw game that got censored on steam, and the censoring is very heavy, like for example the nsfw version you have scenes of the protagonist making the family members pregnant and all. Is honestly quite weird since most nsfw games of this type in steam generally just remove nsfw scenes with a fade to black or literally cut off them, meanwhile this one actually rewrites stuff and crop them to make them sfw, if only the translation was better made.
This could have been a much better game if the protag decided to get his excitement through horror content and his family decides to help him by constantly scaring the shit out of him! :P
You're not wrong - I would have enjoyed a game like that! And imagine the twist of setting it up as a standard adult VN/Dating Sim, only to pull the rug from under the player
I'd criticize this same thing if not for the fact that I joke with my (biochem student) brother about DNA polymerase, cuz of a hip hop song called "Culture Universal" by Sphere of Influence and Zeebra.
Interesting that it is the inverse of Katawa Shoujo, a visual novel in wich the protagonist's heart condition makes it hard to have relationships; it's also an actually good vn.
It's a doujin game most likely made with a visual novel builder program. The backgrounds are most likely default assets. The game was also originally released in 2018 and "remastered" for international release. It's also machine translated, which is the whole thing of the publisher that's helping to release these games in multiple languages outside of DLSite, where you can find this one for cheaper with all the adult content.

Ah, the memories. I also had a childhood friend called "Male Student A". Also this game should be called "they're my sisters but not really, the simulator". But for real, if youre gonna create an adult game at leaat have the audacity to include actual adult scenes (and program the menus with more than one hand, even if it's hard. Pun intended).

I'm surprised the father actually exists even though his role is so minor, usually in this kind of stuff the dad is dead, divorced, indefinitely away on a business trip, etc. so he isn't "in the way"
So out of curiosity I checked the next game on the list and... it looks like another spicy but not actually spicy visual novel. So let me salute you in your bravery for this journey that is building up to be pure madness.
Just getting into it now.... I originally considered combining the two games into one video, but with the separate "stories", and the length of the video after discussing one game I thought it would be best to split them
wait, how the hell does the ending scene with the dad go if you pick Sawa/the step mom? I can kinda get the dad being ok with Goro marrying one of his step sisters because Japanese families adopting a man in order to marry their daughter to take on the family business/name isn't uncommon (it's called a mukoyoshi), but does he really have nothing to say about you marrying your stepmom?? I know they mentioned that they sleep in separate rooms, I guess to indicate that they have a rocky marriage, but is he so much of a deadbeat he doesn't care if his adopted son marries his wife? Like, does he just tell Goro: "yeah ok you can have my wife now, I'm done with her," as if she's something he got bored with?
Only the ending with Suzune end with marriage and a child. Himari's ending has no marriage but it alludes she is pregnant. Mother and Harem ending both have no closure
At one point you mentioned that it's weird to talk about barometric pressure... But a couple of my family members were making small-talk about how changes in air pressure can make it difficult to sleep just a week ago.
$20 that you could spend on a nice Korean BBQ dinner with tasty marinated Bulgogi and veggies and other sides you spent on a game that in summary says incest with step-siblings is perfectly fine even though everyone is still related legally among other things.
I just binge watched the whole playlist and I must say your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Thank you for your efforts and thank you for making it entertaining.
That pressure smalltalk is normal - it's common to associate a change in pressure with a change in attitude. Low pressure is, as pointed out by the MC - feeling cranky.
I'm inmpressed at how offputting the music is. I sincerely was waiting for a stinger, but like the father, it never showed up. I'm enjoying the journey so far, Graeldon!
The tracks do each actually fade out eventually, I've looped it for the video. It was actually quite off-putting in the game because it would just end abruptly and then restart. Very odd
The C's aren't too far away alphabetically, but around 50ish games per year, it's going to take a while... it'll be 2-3 years before I hit the letter A
I bet this video will be the one to bring a lot of subscribers, just for the thimbnail and title alone. I'm really enjoying your reviews, this has been a great series and channnel so far. Congratularions on your work and good luck in the future (and be careful with malware)
As soon as you showed the backgrounds I instantly recognized them, yes, those are free visual novel assets, and some of those are really popular and easy to find, specially the school ones, I'm pretty sure they're also on Gacha Life (pretty much all the bg art there is also free assets)
Where is the option to have the main character have their heart condition get bad enough that they eventually just die in their sleep from cellular anoxia due to low heart rate?
Nah, he would probably die from that lmao, and since its a romance visual novel, I doubt something as realistic as just drinking them energy drinks for the heart rate would exist
The minute I saw that travesty of a text layout, I knew it was going to be bad. You could excuse it as it being a direct translation from Japanese with no localisation, but that only means they didn't put much effort into it at all. And that's just the beginning. Thank you for your brave service of enduring this terrible game.
me and my family do actually discuss barometric pressure sometimes, because we've noticed we get headaches at the same time sometimes and headaches can be caused by barometric pressure. That's thankfully where the similarities end, though
The entire time, it genuinely feels like the person who made this was in heat. Like they where too horny to think clearly, but didn't want to go too far for the web
Charging $20 for a visual novel with worse writing and production than ones you can find on Newgrounds for free is a level of hubris that would give pause even to Icarus.
Through this entire video I had 2 thoughts: 1) I think Himari could do better than the uninteresting protag, and 2) Male Student A deserved better, he deserved at least one character sprite, he deserved happiness. Anyways my solution to fix the game would be to let Male Student A get the girl in the end. Male Student A and Himari is my new headcanon couple and OTP for this game that I've never played.
This is a very well written and edited series, feels like there's heavy inspiration from joshstrifehayes's worst mmo series. Do you have previous experience with editing and sound mixing and all or did you learn everything for your videos?
I've taken inspiration from Josh Strife Hayes for his presentation style, ThatOneVideoGamer (The Completionist) for the challenge, and The Cynical Brit for the review format. But hopefully this series is unique enough to stand on its own feet. I had zero experience with editing and sound mixing before I started this series! 100% self taught, but learned a bit from tutorials and analyzing other content creators to see what works well
Horrid letter formatting like this is usually the hallmark of an incomplete fan translation patch, usually done with BepinEX and asset injection, or a certain automatic Google Translate plugin. Might be amusing to check the local files to see if it has BepinEX pre-installed (it'll be a pretty obviously labeled folder).
I did a little digging on vndb (The Visual Novel Database) and it turns out the original game does have the p0rn parts and the game is machine translated, sadly which happens a lot of these days.

I take offense to the jokes in this review. My best friend in highschool was named Male Student E. On a serious note, the real-world reason for the doki doki heart condition in this story is obvious, but the line about reading romance novels and watching romantic comedies made me think. Someone with a medical condition that forces them to watch morkish romantic comedies/romance stories that they feel somewhat self-conscious about enjoying, seems like a quirky and cute character trait for someone in a dating sim or even H game. Or maybe the idea of an H-game protagonist shamefully admitting to their love interest that they have a medical condition that requires them to watch The Notebook just made me laugh.
Caught up to your recent video after seeing the Arcane Raise video recommended to me, definitely following your channel. Reminds me a bit of Josh Strife Hayes Worse MMO series and Iron Pineapple's Steam Dumpster diving if those two were combined.

Something I'd really like with this series is some sort of list, probably at the end of each episode, of each of the games you've done, and whether you thought they were good or not. 'Cause while I'm Mostly here to see how much garbage there is, shown in some amount of thoroughness and detail, seeing a list of games that might be worth looking at further would be good.
Heya! I'm thinking of starting a spreadsheet to track all the games covered, as well as adding the steam store link in the description of the videos 👍 Hopefully that will help!
Hey Glaeldon, I know the series is currently about going through Steam in alphabetical order, but I feel like there's a lot of interesting games that you won't get to by this method. Have you considered on in order of one game of the alphabet, then looping back around to try and get more variety in? Basically, go one game with A, then B, then when you hit Z, loop back to A. If you don't wanna do this I completely understand. I just figured I'd propose an option.
I did consider that, but I'm not sure it would add much variety other than just which letter of the alphabet I'm doing. I think the advantage of the current method is that it's easier to follow, and even look ahead to see what games are coming up next. Plus Steam is incredibly hard to sort/navigate on that scale. You can't even reverse the alphabetical order in the store.
Goro was too much of a coward to hook up with Male Friend A. Just think, it would’ve solved the problem of missing his “appointment” AND the problem of having to marry his sister
If the "quality" of games you're subjecting yourself to keeps up this pace, you'll be fit for a guest appearance on an Ashens stream in the near future. 🤣
Hey, i discovered your channel a few days ago and have been watching the videos from the oldest to newest. As you can see, i'm now caught up ^^. I was thinking that it would be nice to have a list of which games you recommend, which are playable but not particularly interesting, which are to be avoided, and other such categories. I don't think many people will remember which games were good 6 months later, and going through each video again every time somebody is looking for games will become more and more of a chore as you review more games; and i haven't seen any link to such a list in your video or channel descriptions. I'm not sure how you would implement that, the easiest way to do it that i can think of would be by making different playlists. Maybe you can figure out something better? Anyway, thanks for the videos :)
Hey, thanks for the suggestion! I'm planning on doing a top 5/bottom 5 every 100 games to help highlight some of the ones worth looking at. I've also had another viewer recommend adding links to the steam store page so people can easily find the game. I may also look at creating a google spreadsheet to track the recommended and non-recommended games

As someone who plays a lot of VNs too, I'd be way too embarrassed to listen to a person say those lines in English!
I'm enjoying hearing some of the cultural context that I wasn't aware of - thank you for sharing!
What place is that, if you dont mind telling? Im just curious where people do those talks

I think the biggest risk is one of those reviews getting big and having a lot of people expect that
Dohna Dohna had plenty of H, it's an Alicesoft game so just also a lot of game in between.
With the presence of unnamed female characters now, I nominate that they all be called Lilly.

I can't believe the Harlem ending has the entire family become a world renowned basketball team
This could have been a much better game if the protag decided to get his excitement through horror content and his family decides to help him by constantly scaring the shit out of him! :P

So strange that the adult version is actually cheaper. You'd think it would be more expensive than the version with the content removed

wait, how the hell does the ending scene with the dad go if you pick Sawa/the step mom?

Yeah I mean, not being a morning person is probably one of the first things you'd find out about me too.
Horrid letter formatting like this is usually the hallmark of an incomplete fan translation patch, usually done with BepinEX and asset injection, or a certain automatic Google Translate plugin. Someone with a medical condition that forces them to watch morkish romantic comedies/romance stories that they feel somewhat self-conscious about enjoying, seems like a quirky and cute character trait for someone in a dating sim or even H game.
Heya! I'm thinking of starting a spreadsheet to track all the games covered, as well as adding the steam store link in the description of the videos 👍
Hopefully that will help!
This is my third video from this channel and i've just fallen in love. Hope to see more bad games (but also some good ones, hopefully)

I may also look at creating a google spreadsheet to track the recommended and non-recommended games
anddd now im caught up to the whole series! judging by the upcoming games in the series there seems to be even more visual novels to come
Welcome back to the top! You might be in for a bit of a surprise with the next episode...
@@Graeldon either way im exited to see your next videos :)
The fact the options menu is so crap is especially jarring, because I recognize something pretty similar. This looks like a Ren'py game-which has the same menu options, but a less horrible screen for choosing them, so they would have actively had to change the default to be worse.
In fairness, it looks less horrible in Japanese, which is the games default language. But to not take the time to get the letter spacing and wrapping correct is just lazy dev work.
