Holy shit I can not believe I’ve just stumbled across a Chills performance on KEXP?!? The Chills are THE most important band from the entire Dunedin Sound movement, and produced some of the greatest underground hits of the 80s 😯 This is unreal
Felt the same way when i found this, some bands you really wouldnt expect to find a kexp performance of...
The show the next night was one of my favorites ever.
I totally expected The Chills to be on here. They rank similarly to The Fall in indie rock legend.
Me too-a year later!
agree, legends and true treasure of Dunedin's history.
Martin Phillipps is on par with songwriters like Lennon/ McCartney or Brian Wilson or Syd Barrett. He wrote some of the purest, shimmering pop songs ever, with always that beautiful New Zealand landscape sound (I have no idea how to explain it but if you know, you know). What a great great musician.
I Love “ Pink frost” . Greetings from Brasil.
Pink Frost intro simply amazing.
Brilliant to see Martin better and they're sounding great. I'm an Englishman who quite by accident saw The Straitjacket Fits in a pub in Dunedin in 1987 and was totally blown away....got into the Flying Nun/NZ scene - saw most of the bands later on in London. Hoping The Chills will come back to Melbourne soon.
One of the best Pop-Bands ever! Seriously!
Started following these guys play in Dunedin in the eighties, the line up has changed so many times, but still sound the same, listening to them now on KEXP they could still be playing Dunedin, the Crown Hotel, Sammys, the Captain Cook hotel , the Town Hall ,the Oriental ,and many more seems strange to see them on KEXP but good on you Martin Phillips the Chills still sound fantastic
Bruh!!! OU in the 90s!!! Been to all those bars!!!
RIP many of those venues/bars now, but what a time the 80's and 90's were here in Dunedin :)
I love Martin and the Chills so much. Been a fan since Brave Words. What he's been through, and the light now that he is in, thriving with the band and touring and making new music. Ah, it just warms my heart. Thank you KEXP for hosting these guys!
Fantastic- you want to fast forward past the interview but then you realize that the man is telling you about himself and his travels in life in a very humble down to earth way - for really a musical legend and you stay and hear it. Then you go on to the glorious music with maybe even more admiration and appreciation.
Such a heartfelt connection between the host and Martin - drawing him out gently - genuinely loving. Ahhh! So so so beautiful to see
Saw The Chills supported by the Bats on 14 May 2021 here in Auckland, nz. Umpteenth time to see them and it was just magnificent ..so proud of them being a Kiwi band. The new album, Scatterbrain , is a new classic. Still buzzing from the gig!
That would have been a great gig! Two iconic bands. I hope the Bats did Block of Wood, still love that song 😍
@@grayhalf1854 yes they played it and a total of 6 songs from Daddy's Highway ...amazing night
@@craigbridge1928 Nice! Wish I could have been there!!
Yes, what a raw, beautiful explanation about our island nation, lead by such an honest man.
I’m from The Netherlands, and i felt completely in love with this band somewhere 4 years ago. I got through a bad time (deep depression) and they kept me mostly through it. The Chills, far from the west, where kiwi’s grow, good wine, space & time. A peacefull place down under. ❤️ The Chills so much!
PS: I struggle with alcohol addiction, ..so it was weird/comforting seeing the docu.
I feel much symphaty for Martin.
He feels as a good friend.
The Chills....Heavenly music from NZ....When I'm down, and to get myself back on an even keel......I always go to " Oncoming day", wishing you all the best...
Im a New Zealanders and agree love their honesty
Wet Blanket. To me it's one of the most underrated songs out there.
Very lovely, the melody gave me goosebumps
So good to see the Chills on KEXP. One of my all time favourite bands.😃
I was at the Dunedin Town Hall for the final concert of Submarine Bells, they played their Guts out after a grueling European Tour....was spellbinding and heartbreaking bc it felt like the end....great to see them back!!!!
first song is magic. Still can't believe it was made in the eighties and took until now to find...
you missed so much. lol
You should seek out Night of Chill Blue. Another cracking Chills song - similar but not similar.
@@kieransmith1796 thanks, that's a cool one too.
The sound production here is just awesome. Shimmering. Often gave me the chills :)
This is so surreal ....love the Chills!
Bands that play in the KEXP studio always sound amazing.
Highly recommend The Chills DVD on the band and Martin Phillipps. Its impossible to forget Heavenly Pop Hit once you hear it.
It’s also heavenly good! 🤗
Haven’t given their new music a shot, I’m blown away. You look these 80s bands putting out new music, New Order, OMD, Depeche Mode and none of it is up to snuff. But The Chills, on a whole other wave length.
...and Straight jacket Fits, and 3Ds!!! Glorious times!!!
Don't forget the Verlaines... ❤️ And of course sneaky feelings!
Bandota desde Dunedin NZ!!!!
The chills are so so beautiful!
Nice one kexp!! Cant beat the Dunedin sound 😍 flying nun records!! Chaahooo!!
Nice post! Thank you so much Martin et al!!!
Thanks so much Martin and the chills and KEXP for hosting them Gratitude and blessings .
Soft Bomb was one of my favorite albums back in Highschool 😎
Submarine bells is my favorit album.
Watched them last night in Wellington. So good! The first single I ever bought was Rolling moon / Flamethrower back in the 80s.
Loved this KEXP, now I have bought a lot of new songs from this group!!
Precious content, thank you
Truly amazing and thank you Mr Phillips & Co! Saw you all back in the day at Chapel Hill’s Cat’s Cradle a couple times. Not a show to miss. You all are more magicians than musicians.
Helloooooo !
This is amazing. Thank you the Chills and the Kexp !!
Yeah, they're great! Good honest music! Thanks! ✌
Truly chilling specially enjoyed Underwater Wasteland "find a place beneath the waves where we have to hide our waste away dragging nets across the bay leaves the oceans dead"
I was listening to a 4 CD compilation I have from Rough Trade Records and it has Pink Frost on it... such an amazing tune and this live performance is delightful 😃. So wonderful to think that a label like Rough Trade not only had this band but The Smiths and Mazzy Star putting out music!
This music is etched into my soul
I lost track of The Chills around '89 and recently been playing my old vinyl issues. What a great show this is! I need to get some missing releases.... Really enjoyed this. Thanks.
Enjoy those old records. Im very jealous!
Very Good!🎶❤
i love everything
BRILLIANT! love the drummer's shirt!
Great thrill to see the Chills again....
I just recently stumbled upon the chills, now i see them on here.
KEXP never disappoints
Always amazing, warms my heart
Still sounding great and it's an instant hit even to some younger people who didn't grow up listening to them
gorgeous
Relentlessly touching,The Soul of The Chills !
BRILLIANT
Awesome sound
The Chills are just too cool for words!
House of love done superb cover of this 💝
Nice pleasure to hear and watch the chills :)
Makes me feel chilling
I loved my leather jacket the whole time I was at Otago... still do.
This made me stop everything I was doing, put on head phones and be transformed by the music. Still. So. Good.
Music unmatchable, nice interview by kxep chick, I love the fact that I reckon the chills are the greatest band in the world and no one recognises their mozartian brilliance, saw them in Palmy and Napier last year wow
Ethereal vibration of the Dunedin shores.
OMG, I've only now just seen this wow!! Great chats too. Went to dunners (Dunedin) a bit later in the early 90s but they were legendary then
Made me well up
Primo. Thanks for giving me the Chills.
Que calidad 👌
great
So good!! Next up Felt should re-unite and play on here
I think Lawrence is too far gone to reform Felt in any meaningful way now. I'd like to believe he could do those old songs justice but having seen Go-Kart Mozart a couple of times my hopes would not be high. Better to leave the legacy intact I reckon. (I did see Felt a few times back in the eighties and they were amazing then...)
Just been watching the Flying Nun doco on your tube and stumbled across the KEXP show. Nice one Martin.
❤
Chill & KEXP.
The great 1 kg! Don't stop doing what you do.
Amazing band. The House of Love made a wonderful cover of Pink Frost
Oh yes, I now vaguely remember that's the first time I heard this song! Thanks for the heads up. Used to love the House of Love. You have superb taste David, Prefab Sprout are next-level too.
@@benedictearlson9044 from La Manga , Spain, thanks !
@@davidcheca4646 Lovely, we were in Denia in March! Greetings from Southampton, UK.
New Zealand royalty
Their music speaks of coastal island sound..phew so good.
I love this band. Maybe live in the UK someday?
wow nice
Should I be terrified? Should I be crying? Should I try to run and hide where nobody can find me?
Sunburnt is an excellent album despite the silly passport issues that changed how it was recorded. Wish it would get a re-release.
Would you like to listen to The Chills? "Yiss".
fire whoever was in charge of the mix jfc
mm Marty's got a new Gretsch . . nice seeing my buddies from Dtown on here. Choice.
Tumeke The Chills!
N Z Royalty...
“ I wanna stop crime, I wanna stop crime” Don’t we all Martyn !
Garth on the drums was amazing
The Chills, still very cool! Dunedin Sound
Martin Phillips, very similar timeless ethereal vocal style to Al Stewart imo. I was lucky enough to have been at one of the too few Chills gigs at Warners in chch late 80s-where many great bands played- Renee Geyer, Bailterspace, The Pogues( well Shane and Darryl Hunt anyhow, late night after a pogue gig at the chch town hall)
Prefer his voice to Stewart's but good reference.
Chills Rule OK
I still love my leather jacket,
and I wear it all the time.
Fuckin cool
Super cool to see the guy who I sell booze to on KEXP
Нормально!
Барабанщик похож на моего соседа. Тот, кстати, сумасшедший. Не опасный, но выглядит так же.
Tons of dad rock bands these days
Father's Day coming up.
❤
