Thank you for this very clear & helpful video. I am a 67 year old female retiree & was able to repair my 98 year old mother's serging mower myself!!! Thank you, thank you! Lighthouse Lady
Hi. A big thank you. I was about to scrap my old mower but thought it worth £2 to try a new gasket and diaphragm. When I followed your excellent instructions I found the diaphragm was perforated. Now my old mower runs perfectly and you have saved me a lot of money. Thank you for bothering to share your expertise.
Did the trick! My mower had a new carb fitted last year by the "service agent" - about 3 weeks and 4 cuts ago it stopped working properly. They'd made a mess of the gasket and diaphragm when fitting - followed your clear instructions, mower immediately sprang into life sounding healthy again. Thanks!
Great video! I bought a new carburetor for my Briggs and Stratton, had trouble with it running for about 2 minutes and then stalling out. After watching this video I checked the gasket and diaphragm, I had installed them backwards, reinstalled them and problem solved! Thank you!
Just did all this....didn`t have new parts but I cleaned everything, used a little silicone, blew everything out with air, and everything worked fine...just needed one more cut before winter....now I know how to fix, I will replace with new parts in the spring...thanks great vid M8.
Yup! and I had water in the Carburetor just like you said in another video clip. I got my lawnmower up and running again. thank you. as a woman that is not ordinarily involved in mechanical projects ~ you saved the day for me. Your videos are very easy to entreat. I am most grateful. I recommended you to others on my facebook profile. Thanks.
Thank you very much for this video! After ten years my mower gave difficulties (problems with starting and priming, motor didn't run smoothly but very irregularly, consumed a lot of fuel and blowed an immense smell of fuel in my face whilst running behind the machine. I was thinking about buying a new one, until I've found this video. After a thorough cleaning from the fuel tank and the carburator, using a cheap product from Wibra (Dutch & Belgian) and replacing the diaphragm and gasket, which costed me only 4 euro (+ delivery cost) problems seemed to be solved! Thank you very much for this very clear and useful tutorial!
Well done!! I've watched several videos where I was told how to do the very same things, but the presentation was so poorly done I wasn't sure if it was correct. Your video makes everything "crystal clear" and instilled a high degree of confidence in doing this repair. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial!! It did the job for my mover and it now lives to trim the garden again without loosing it´s breath:-) Also changed the air filter and sparkplug and now I´ll just have to change the oil and we´ll be heading hard for another season of cutting grass. Thanks a lot for posting this video I know there are many B&S owners that can benefit from this.
perfect solution, thank you very much. I got the part, followed the vid step by step and it's purring like a kitten now. IT"S IMPORTANT that you clean out that well he mentions at 3:22. I thought that dark area was a shadow. I used Q tips to get all that gunk out and was surprised how much was there. That crap alone probably was half the problem.
Thank you so very much! I ordered the spares today. Now I have watched your video I am more confident, and actually looking forward to fixing the poorly mower. Thanks!!
Thank you for a great video. Saved me from having to buy a new mower. I knew that the diaphragm were the problem but I didn't remember how to remove the carburator. The Briggs Stratton site was no help at all.. thanks again
Very helpful, clear, concise and correct. Saved myself a good few quid, replaced the diaphragm and gasket and clean the engine. Mower now working perfectly. Thank you.
This video saved me today. All day i've been trying to get my mower working, i found this video and realised i had the gasket and diaphragm in the wrong order! I misinterpreted some online instructions though, so I'm not beating myself up too much, im not a complete numpty :D Cheers!
Good video. The reason some people install the air filter the other way around as mentioned at 07:00 is because on some Briggs & Stratton engine models there is very little clearance between the "V" shape on the filter case and the engine blower housing, making it somewhat of a pain to install it without first removing the blower housing itself, at least partially. But yes, the correct orientation is flat side to the front.
Top quality recording & video. Your great advice showed me how to change my gaskets without a trip to the mower man. Thanks again, I think you have a future in any kind of self-help mechanical show.
Much appreciated. This was a very informative video. It's videos like this that give us mildly handy guys the confidence to undertake needed maintenance without having to spend a fortune on mechanics fees. Thx!
Great job mate, that linkage was in a different position, a bit of clarity and inmportance.. But Its sorted and runs better than ever.. It was a 2nd hand gift....
Thank you for the video. I feel that 400,000+ people have had to do this which means there is an inherent flaw in the design. Briggs and Stratton should be held accountable in some fashion. My mower has less than 200 hours and eventually would not stay running. I have been in and out of the automotive repair industry over the years and have experience with many types of engines. After replacing the carb diaphragm and gasket, the mower ran great for about 20 minutes (about long enough to mow my front yard which is 20 yards x 20 yards. Notes: - Tank was emptied and filled with new gas - New Spark Plug - New filter - mower deck cleaned top and bottom of all debris - carb and mating surface on gas-tank cleaned spotless - new oil - verified compression - starts only when primed - primer bulb has small hole on the face
The problem is not in the design. The problem is in leaving the had setting in the mower. The ethanol which is alcohol breaks down the gasket and makes out lose suction from tank. If you let your mower or other gas tools run till they are out off gas it will eliminate the issue and will be ready the next spring to start right up after adding gas
Great video self explanatory, air filter was a bit oily but just went for the gasket kit first. £2.50ish and started first time and to be fair with the clutch in it nearly pulled me off ma feet lol my Ford is now a Ferrarri...
Thanks for the video, I fitted new diaphragm and gasket to my B&S and it's now purring again, it's getting on for 20 years old and the deck rusted away and was rebuilt in wood! The throttle linkage managed to dislocate to the left side of the intake pipe on dismantling which had me confused at first but a re-check on the video showed me where it should be. I seem to be missing the secondary spring on the throttle butterfly - but hey ho it works. What is the mechanism that you can click into a different position to the right of the prime button? I lost the manual years ago.
What is that spring for under the diaphragm please? Mine kept falling off the carb and moving the gasket when I tried to put it back together! In the end I bought a new carb already assembled and fitted to a new tank I got off Amazon for £20.
Nice! I'd done this before while stripping down and cleaning my engine, so had it all to pieces - this was brilliant becasue it shows how to do it with the MINIMUM amount of disasssembly! Nice and clear too. Oh, engine started FIRST TIME after. Wife very pleased :)
the o ring from carby to inlet pipe is loose, over the pipe, and in behind the plastic clip holder, should it be fitting snug, there was no gasket too in my neighbour's mower, should the tank only be 3/4 filled each time
Hi I have replaced the gasket and diaphragm but there's a slight drip of petrol coming out on the opposite site to the primer bulb. Any idea why? Also the engine is racing too quick now after changing the governor springs.
Thanks. Same thing - some water in the well where the screen sits. Whatever that's for. I had an O-ring and bushing fall out of the port behind the butterfly valve port where it mates with the engine when I removed the assembly. O-ring goes in first. Mine is the same engine but it's used on a pressure washer.
Nice video. Do you have a link to a service/operator manual for this model lawnmower? I inherited this mower when we moved into our house and I can’t find the manual online?
Thank you for your excellent clip. I followed your instructions and it worked a treat my old banger is cutting grass once more. Yipeeee. Oh yeah I had put the air filter on the wrong way Doh...
Very good video but you forgot to install the spring? I watched your video to get the installation order of the diaphragm and gasket. My power washer that uses the exact same carb never ran right from the day I purchased it new. The gasket and diaphragm had been reversed during factory assembly.
I installed a new carb and it ran great for a couple months then today went to mow the grass and it wouldn't prime. I found behind the primer bulb some parts. A tiny spring a steel ball and a plug like thing. I got it back in the hole it fell out of now it primes and runs again. I doubt it will stay in place and will fall apart again. The plug think is rubber and used a toothpick to put the parts back in the hole, hard to see so small.
I replaced the Diaphragm and Gasket an my MTD BM87-35 lawn mover, but it is not tight. The speed of motor changes very fast and sometimes the motor goes off. And some petrol is running out of the gasket.... What can I do now?
At 1:07 If you’re looking straight at the carburetor with the gas filler cap on your left, when I press the primer bulb gas will come out of a little hole to the left of the bulb (in front of the screw). Is this normal? No return line should be connected to it going to the tank?
Hey GardenMechanic. I have done all the steps outlined in this tutorial correctly, and tightened them down in a star pattern, but upon starting up my mower, I can see some seepage of gas coming out. Is this normal?
mogbaba I Did the same with my Briggs engine. When the primer does not suck gasoline in to the carb. that is the problem that diaphragm is faulty, or it has torn, or been wet or a tiny hole might be the reason.. I hope that gave you a picture why he replaced the parts..
Thanks for the video I needed exactly that, but when I reassembled the throttle linkage doesn't seem to work. I only removed the one point like in your video. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
have replaced the gasket and diaphragm today following your video. put it back together but the engine will now not run for more than 2 mins. when it cuts out you cannot get it started again. removed the spark plug and it was very sooty so cleaned it and put it back and it run again for 2 mins and cut out again. cleaned the plug again and it run again until I had to stop it to empty the box. wouldn't start again. I put it back in the shed at this point. any idea what the problem is please. the engine before the new parts was running very uneven and guzzling fuel. when it runs it runs lovely now.
yes same problem on mine..did you fix it? There is not much left to do: 1. clean or new air filter 2. new spark plug 3. new springs for the governor 4. New Carburator which is not cheap :-(
You should pry out the Main jet and Emulsion tube and clean the holes. There is a tiny flat spot on top of the Jet that you can carefully pry the plastic part secured by a tiny O ring. Reinstall Flush. It snaps in. There are 3 small holes in the tube barrel.
Thanks for creating this great video. Sadly though, after carefully installing the new diaphragm and gasket, I'm leaking fuel from what looks like the very seal I've replaced; I've removed the carb, checked and reinstalled and it's still leaking? I'm wondering if removing a old (20yrs!) carburetor could have resulted in it losing shape and hence the leak?

On reviews placed on amazon for same/similar diaphragm issuessome took and reused old gasket + new gasket (as replacement was not thick enough) I have not done mine yet - but is a aftermarket one ( so either will use 'make a gasket' in a tube - along with gasket .....or both gaskets (tho worry about that causing issues)
Excellent video, your just like me when it comes to this stuff, I'm a firm believer in clean clean clean, i cringe when i see "parts changers" put parts back on on filthy grimy surfaces, i have to walk away, lol.

There are a lot of videos re: the B&S carb diaphragm. Yours is definitely the best one! Nice work. Thanks for uploading.

Thanks, my mower was running roughly so I got a new gasket and diaphragm, changed it in 30 mins using your video and now mower running great.
Thank you very much for this video! Cheers mate this helped a lot. New gaskets on the carb and the old workhorse is running like a dream.
Thank you! I was looking for a simple tear down on these integrated tank/carb setups. Very insightful!
Followed this video exactly + cleaned related components meticulously. Repair was 100% successful. Thank you very much for your clear explanation.
This gasket fixed my engine surging issues. Thank you!
was about to go purchase a new lawn mower today tried this and it worked on the first pool thank you
Excellent tutorial!! It did the job for my mover and it now lives to trim the garden again without loosing it´s breath:-)

Very helpful, clear, concise and correct. Saved myself a good few quid, replaced the diaphragm and gasket and clean the engine. Mower now working perfectly. Thank you.
So helpful, thank you. All changed and mower running fabulously. Didn't have to find a man!!
This video saved me today. All day i've been trying to get my mower working, i found this video and realised i had the gasket and diaphragm in the wrong order!

Great video, thanks. I would have suspected the springs but this solved the problem!
I just saved myself a 4 week waiting period. just to do something simple..... thanking you heaps
Excellent tutorial ole chap.
Your video is the clearest on UA-cam! Good video and good job mate!
Top quality voice & video. Clear advice, thanks.
Thank you, this video was a huge help doing this job on my mower and completely fixed the running issues!
Very well made video. Clear and simple to understand. This made my fix far more simple than it would have been. Heck, it was actually fun! Thanks!
Thanx from Italy. I have the same machine, now i can fix the carburator diaphragma. good video! Sorry for my bad english
Awesome helped me and was easier than imagined.
thanks much. helped me fix a lawnmower that my neighbor put on the curb. runs good now.
Made me think. Our salvage yard is full of $25 mowers, probably a few with this same issue.
Great video, thanks! Greetings from Indianapolis, Indiana. USA!
Thanks. Big help. Only took 15 minutes from start to finish.
You helped me out a lot with this - it got my mower working again. A big thank you!!
Really helpful step by step guide.... And.... My mower started first time and continued to run

Great close up of the work!
Thanks, worked like a charm. Took about 8 minutes. Great video.
Well done. Used this video today to refresh my memory and everything went great, Appreciate the effort.
Excellent video, very professionally done, what a UTube video should look like.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Just what my mower needed It's running like a champ again.

Thank you, thank you! Because of your video, I was able to get my old pressure washer working again for less than $10, including a new spark plug!
Thanks for the help! Worked like a charm. Great video.
Thanks! I was desperate when I didn't know where the little spring went, which was totally apparent from your video. Many thanks!
Very clearly and pleasantly presented mate. Well done indeed, thanks.
Great quality clear video, thanks - my mower lives, all for under a fiver!!
Excellent clip. We followed these instructions and it solved our problem perfectly. Thanks very much!
Nice to find this. I did my fix and it helped. Thank you for that good video.

Thanks so helpful, I'm going to give this a try. Mine is a 450 series 148. Would these parts fit?
Very useful and clear video. Greetings from Argentina.
the o ring from carby to inlet pipe is loose, over the pipe, and in behind the plastic clip holder, should it be fitting snug, there was no gasket too in my neighbour's mower, should the tank only be 3/4 filled each time
Followed advice, found loads of dirt.
Top video

do these have a mixture screw? mine starts and runs good...but every few seconds i get a "putt" ...not sure if the diaphram is at fault
Concise, informative and extremely helpful. Thank you 👍
Thank you for your excellent clip. I followed your instructions and it worked a treat my old banger is cutting grass once more. Yipeeee. Oh yeah I had put the air filter on the wrong way Doh...
Glad it helped you! :)
Alex Askaroff
what about the spring??? Goes between the diaphram and carb how did you start it without the spring?
Very good video but you forgot to install the spring? I watched your video to get the installation order of the diaphragm and gasket. My power washer that uses the exact same carb never ran right from the day I purchased it new. The gasket and diaphragm had been reversed during factory assembly.
When i took mine apart, i lost the spring. Any idea what it is there for?
From Buffalo, New York. Thank you for the information.
Great detailed video....I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!

Hi,, I’ve a hayter hawk 375 which starts ok but after about 5 mins of running a lot of smoke is produced,,,, any thoughts please.
Brilliant and easy to follow
Greetings from US, pretty good job you have done .....
Fantastic video mate
Thank you. You could may be say a little bit about the cause which made you change those parts! Great video.
mogbaba I Did the same with my Briggs engine. When the primer does not suck gasoline in to the carb. that is the problem that diaphragm is faulty, or it has torn, or been wet or a tiny hole might be the reason.. I hope that gave you a picture why he replaced the parts..
Thank you, Yes it did.
Thanks for the video I needed exactly that, but when I reassembled the throttle linkage doesn't seem to work. I only removed the one point like in your video. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
Where did the diaphragm spring go when you replaced the diaphragm and gasket. You show it when you remove it, but it appears you did not reinstall it?
A child could do it. Thanks for putting this up. Purred like a cat.
Can you tell me what socket size you used to remove the Carb/Petrol tank? Is it a different size to the Spark Plug?
have replaced the gasket and diaphragm today following your video. put it back together but the engine will now not run for more than 2 mins. when it cuts out you cannot get it started again. removed the spark plug and it was very sooty so cleaned it and put it back and it run again for 2 mins and cut out again. cleaned the plug again and it run again until I had to stop it to empty the box. wouldn't start again. yes same problem on mine..did you fix it?
There is not much left to do:
1. clean or new air filter
2. new spark plug
3. new springs for the governor
4. New Carburator which is not cheap :-(
+Moes no I didn't mate. The plug is quite wet when you remove it and it guzzles fuel. I think it's going to be a new carb. they about £25 here in uk.
You should pry out the Main jet and Emulsion tube and clean the holes. There is a tiny flat spot on top of the Jet that you can carefully pry the plastic part secured by a tiny O ring. Reinstall Flush. It snaps in. There are 3 small holes in the tube barrel.
No mention of the diaphragm spring inside the Carb?
Thanks for creating this great video. Sadly though, after carefully installing the new diaphragm and gasket, I'm leaking fuel from what looks like the very seal I've replaced; I've removed the carb, checked and reinstalled and it's still leaking? Thanks! When I prime the engine it'll turn over, but only for a second. I'm hoping a new gasket fixes that.
Great video and a great help. Thanks for that.
brilliant video like others i saved a lot of money simple fix thanks m8
Hello .
Q pasa cuando el diafragma ya no vale como se manifiesta en la maquina
Brilliant video! Thanks.
Thanks. Helped me out massively.
What did you use to clean the carburetor? washing up liquid, petrol etc. Thank you
carb cleaner works best and evaporates quickly.
excellent tutorial
Excellent video, your just like me when it comes to this stuff, I'm a firm believer in clean clean clean, i cringe when i see "parts changers" put parts back on on filthy grimy surfaces, i have to walk away, lol.
I want to thank you for this. Helped me out a lot.
