  • I recently learned from a master of alla prima oil painting, Daniel Keys, and wanted to understand what helped him to become a master painter. If you want to become a master yourself or simply want to level up your work, I'm talking about my key takeaways and how you can apply them to your painting practice.

    How do you like this filming format? Do you enjoy seeing my palette at the same time as the painting? :D

    • @daviller74
      @daviller74 4 роки тому +3

      This is nice, I do like seeing your palette and I spend a considerable amount of time watching what is happening on the palette when i'm watching artists paint. I will say that the arrangement placed too much focus on the palette, and the painting is secondary. I really do appreciate and enjoy your commentary, and it had helped reinforce some of my own beliefs about painting and the learning process. Please keep doing this!

      Thank you David! I agree, I think next time I either am going to put the painting on the left or film from the right so that the painting is nearer to the camera. :) I'm so glad you enjoyed it though, and that it helped reinforce your own thoughts on the painting process! That makes me so happy.

      I love seeing your process Chelsea. I also enjoy listening to you. Your voice is very calming. I have been painting as a muralist for 20 years and have been hoping to do more fine art canvases. I have a website but have been super challenged by marketing. You are so inspiring. Thank you for putting yourself out there! ❤️

      It is an excellent presentation. Can only be made better if the subject was shown , as well, probably best with superimposed image in lower right, which you could fade in and out if you don't want it taking up any 16:9 space.
      You are absolutely correct re fundamentals.
      I am on a very similar journey and very happy I found you. Thank you.

    Chelsea I have to say that as much as I am enjoying your painting demos, your narratives and what you are saying is hitting home with me so bang on that you almost have me in tears. You are addressing all of my personal issues and confirming that all that I am experiencing is normal. The fear, procrastination, perfectionism, all of it. I feel like you are speaking directly to me. Thank you helping me realize that this is all a legitamate part of the process.

    This video is just what I needed Chelsea! Thank you for it! I definitely need to get my fundamentals right. 'Just when you want to speed up - slow down' is a sentence I should have tattooed, haha.

    • @ChelseaLang
      @ChelseaLang  4 роки тому +1

      Haha, I can relate! I would tattoo that, and maybe 'step back' too, to make sure I back up from my easel often. 😂Maybe I can just put sticky notes all over my easel as a middleground?

    You are a very good teacher in the way you speak, breakdown your process and deliver your artistic perspective. Fascinating to watch you paint. ❤️ My grandfather was a master painter- Marc A. Barrosse, Sr. He could paint anything. Brush and or palette knife. He lived to paint and for over 50 years, until he was 86 years old, sat daily with his art at his place on the fence in Jackson Square across from St. Louis Cathedral (New Orleans). Tourist came from all over the world and bought his art. As a small child, I sat at his feet just once and watched him paint. Now, at 72, I wish I would have picked his brain and watched him paint more. Both my father and mother painted. She was a commercial artist and painted daily all her life. She too lived to paint. I have painted through the years and can paint anything but mostly enjoy people though, then still life- preferring oil then pastel. I haven’t painted in quite a few years. I am a psychotherapist and author. I must make the time to do so again. 💐🎨 thank you for the inspiration 🎨🎉🖌🖍🖊🖋✏️📝

    I've been painting about 10 years, and you philosophy is just wonderful. It's a great philosophy about most things in life. This attitude of not just trying to complete the painting but being in the present and the work as we're doing it. You had many other great points. Thanks!!!

    Excellent video - and the key points are straight on. I could relate to all you said regarding mindset - that is exactly what I have been working on adjusting this past week. I've been becoming frustrated, fatigued and doubtful. Now I'm feeling more confident because I'm willing to try new things and fail. It's funny I discovered if I didn't think about how long it was taking I became so much more relaxed too. Thanks!

    Great video! I like seeing how you bend the pools of paint in color and value while keeping the color clean. Daniel Keyes is one of my favorites! Schmid being at the very top all time. I did get the chance to take a workshop from Daniel Gerhartz, which was incredible. He seems in line with someone you would probably like. Of course they all know each other. That level of talent finds each other. You are making incredible paintings and great videos. Please keep it up!

    Another very helpful video Chelsea. You are right. Daniel Keys is a master painter. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona and take many classes and workshops at Scotttdale Artists' School and while I have yet to study with Daniel I have taken Kathy Anderson's workshop. When Daniel, Kathy and others are here most Januarys love seeing them and getting together at the end of the day for drinks or a gallery opening. Symi Jackson of Rosemary Paints is also a good friend and we are in touch often. I can honestly say that I find painting flowers harder than any subject but I do adore florals and you have given me some inspiration to buckle down. People and animals are my favorite things to paint. I love landscapes but at this point in my life I am unable to travel with a lot of equipment and the Arizona heat is very limiting for me so I remain a studio painter. I would love to meet you if you are ever in Scottsdale to take a workshop or better yet, teach one.

    Hello! This color is a real refreshment because the colors are much more vivid, happy and natural, unlike the vintage style that you normally use in your paintings.
    Maybe you prefer vintage coloring to make pictures, and especially portraits look like they are a hundred years old. Sometimes things need to change ...
