HD's pros: 1) updated Stakegun's reload animation - now stake doesn't appear from thin air before holding part is completely hidden; 2) Electrodriver's shuriken firing animation now synched with sound and fire rate; 3) now Bolt Gun's ammo doesn't appear from thin air during reload; HD's cons: 1) Grenade Launcher uses stake reload sound for some reason (did they try to replicate original's doubled reload sound after combo? O_o); 2) Chaingun's firing animation is too slow; 3) Rocket Launcher makes Chaingun's wind down sounds for some reason; 4) Electrodriver's lightning looks much less powerful compared to the original; 5) Flamethrower's flame looks weaker compared to much more hot looking original; 6) SMG/Flamethrower combo now completely silent - they didn't even reuse Electrodriver's combo sound, let alone create completely new; 7) Bolt Gun's firing animation was cut - all bolts disappear at the same time; 8) Painkiller's catch animation was completely ruined; 9) Heater's balls now don't glow red after first bounce. (bonus points for lacking water splashes)
Pros: Painkiller's primary fire wind down animation is fixed. Cons: Shotgun doesn't have the sounds of spent shells hitting the ground, and the balls from Heater don't have sounds for bouncing against the ground.
Original Painkiller is still my favorite for me, Even, they used almost same sounds. The original makes more punchy animation and feedback. Not to mention remaster cut some memorable enemies and levels from based game and sold as DLCs.
WTF you can extend the range of stake guns grenades by shooting them with the stakes?! Well, I suppose learning this after 16 years is better than never.
I loved the original. In fact, it was probably my favorite fps, along with Serious Sam, and there's many things I enjoyed with HD. However I feel that many improvements could be made. I may sound picky here but it's because I really like the story of the original and I want to see more of it and what new technology can bring to an fps like this now. This will be long I know, but I like to discuss 3D art and designs and animation, especially for movies and games I like. Weapons - Painkiller: I love the way it looks in HD. However, one particular animation I noticed is missing is when the blade retracts back to the gun, no catch animation happens. It basically just comes back and hooks there like it has no weight to it. The orange beam also looks a tad clunky and stiff (I'll talk about this in the particles and effects section). Shotgun: This is actually something I've been confused with since the beginning. In the original cinematics, Daniel is carrying it but it is longer and is much more of a tactical version. It has no stock, a pistol grip, and overall has more detail and looks way better. Now I know rendered cinematics usually have more detail than the game itself, but the model I think would still be better than the shorter version with the stock. Just My opinion there. Anyway, the animations are good except the freezer barrel on the right side does not go down on reload like the left one does and the top half is invisible for some reason. I also feel weird about the super glossy texture on it. Stake Gun: This one is pretty good all around with its detail and animations. I like it! Rocket Launcher: The only thing here with the animations is that the speed of rotation of the minigun when firing appears to be a little too slow for the fire rate its at. Otherwise detail is awesome looking. Electro Driver: Details and animations on this one are good too. The only thing Ill bring up here is the electricity in the particles and effects section. Rifle: Again, same as the Electro Driver. Bolt Gun: With this being my favorite weapon in the game as it's basically the stake gun on steroids, I noticed that the firing animation for the bolts shoots all at once rather than doing the 2 bottom ones first, then the next 2, then the top as the sound and recoil animation suggests. Also, you can't variable zoom with the scope like in the original. Soul Catcher: I love this new weapon. every mechanic and detail on it is great and fits well in the game. Additional Weapons: I love that they added new weapons to play with in the DLC levels, but that's the catch, DLC levels that you paid extra for on levels that were already in the full original. Particles & Effects - I feel the factor that needs most improvement on is the particles and effects. The fire and explosions just feel a bit weak and don't really express what an explosion looks and feels like. There should be more of an intimidating bang sound. The original's sounds did a better job of that. More fire and smoke would be present and also some heat waves would make the explosion look way more visually appealing and satisfying. And if you're close to it, not only would it deal damage to you, but also some camera shake would enhance that. Some muzzle flashes look good and some could use just a bit more smoke and sparks. Also, don't have them trail with the barrel! The fire and smoke launches away from the barrel. The shotgun has good fire and sparks, but a little more smoke out of the barrel would enhance that even more. I'd also really like to see more vapor trail off of the frozen projectiles fired from the shotgun. The only fire element I like really is the flamethrower on the rifle and even still, some smoke and heat waves plus more fire on the surface that it lands on would help drastically. I like the kind of electrical theme with the souls, checkpoints, and portals, but for electricity it looks a bit stiff, also like the painkiller's orange energy beam. So with a little more bloom or glow, and more quick and glitchy like movements would look much better for electricity. The electric beam from the Electro Driver does a bit better job of this, but still could use a bit more bloom as electricity is bright. And the water. I understand that water is a very difficult element to animate as it is a fluid and has infinite amounts of random movements. But the physics are a bit off. When you shoot physical objects other than bullets in it, they just stick on the surface as if it were the solid ground or wall. No splash or wave disturbance effect happens at all. It does when bullets hit but its more of a slow wave disturbance and no quick, high splash. Lastly is the lighting. Now the lighting in many parts of the game look very beautiful and is properly done. But the flashlight. It is way too bright and weird things happen while on. A lot of shadows of objects and enemies disappear and everything just gets blown out and looks off. Something like the original's flashlight is much better. Sounds - The sounds from the environments, such as ambience noises, are ok and fit with them. Enemy sounds are good too. However, I don't really like that some of the classic soundtracks are either rearranged or replaced. Some replacements I did kind of like, but the originals were the best. The weapon sounds and firepower are just weaker. Explosions don't sound powerful and intimidating. Plus some sounds don't even exist! The DINK sounds of bouncing Heater Bombs from the Bolt Gun are not present. Also, when you do the combo attack for the rifle/flamethrower, no launch sound occurs when it shoots the flaming tank and no explosion sound occurs at all when it blows up. Overall, the weapons just don't have the punch that they normally would or like they did in the original. Environments - I'd say the strongest factor of HD is the levels and environments as they have gotten huge upgrades and details since the original and look beautiful. In some areas you may still notice the simple polygonal shapes of certain model structures, but overall I didn't really dig into that because there's way more to look at and take in. I do agree though that they probably could have been a bit better as it is much newer and was made in UE3. But still, not that bad. I know People Can Fly don't really plan to return to this game as they don't have the IP anymore. Nordic games does and they and Farm 51 made this so I'd love to see them or whoever return to this series and make an awesome remaster or sequel or anything and consider these improvements. Only time will tell.
It's amazing how bad the remaster looks. And I'm pretty damn sure I'm not wearing my nostalgia glasses. The texture work is sometimes acceptable (stakegun) but sometimes terrible (the "wet" glossy shotgun). The muzzle flashes are not only cartooney but make the most basic mistake in the muzzle flashes book - they're glued to the barrel (this is not how muzzle flashes work!). They made the chaingun more fancy-looking, ruining its visual connection to the military levels: the levels are supposed to look like old dingy factories, and the old chaingun fit that look, while the new one totally misses the point. (_And_ it turns slow as hell now.) The new lightning on Electrodriver is a disgrace... I could go on. It's sad to see one of the best weapon sets in gaming history to receive this kind of treatment.
I only wish Painkiller's guns were as great as those of Will Rock. When saw PK back in the day, and played the demo - i was sure that all levels will be like graveyards and medieval towns, cathedrals, dungeons and other dark gothic stuff. Unfortunately...when i started to arrive in all the anti-medieval places...the disappointment set in quite heavily. I am yet to find a version of this game which would stick to a theme. Fortunately, the dream came true in the form of Necrovision and Necrovision: Lost Company. At least, for me it did.
I like how the remaster actually plays WORSE than the original because of remixed enemy spawns. In many instances in the remaster you're pitted against a slow trickle of enemies, while locked in a room and forced to wait for them, whereas in the original game they spawned in large waves all at once.
How on earth didn't I realise that you can shoot the granades with the stake gun further if you shoot into the granade after you lauch it? I played for like 300 hours with the original game. From 9 yeas old til 21 years old.
The original blows the new one out of the way easily, the only thing the newer one has going for it is the updated weapon textures. All the projectiles and some changed animations like the chaingun have been given a slow unrealistic animation.
I like 2004 more but I can't deny H&D did some improvements, most noticeable are Rocket Launcher projectiles do emit light while traveling and Painkiller primary animation was fixed. If you look at 2004's Painkiller primary animation is not looped correctly, 1 + or - frames are offset.
@@CrawBG : Plus a few of them are missing secondary sounds:- Bouncing Heater balls, grenades hitting the ground, shell casings hitting the ground! And the flamethrower and lightening effects are very weak, compared to the originals... :-)

I can't really described it but the weapons in Painkiller 2012 just has that Unreal 3 look to them. I really disliked how all games that used Unreal 3 kinda looked the same back then. Everything had a shiny / glossy look to it.
Hopefully someone will ignore this game's existance and make a real Painkiller 2 kicking off of where BooH ended, with new quality of life changes to the formula as well (better AI, more useful Tarot Cards, manual Demon Morph, etc.) while returning to the grounded atmosphere and tone of the original game instead of the later games' fantasy world.
I really hope so too. The original and BooH were really good for its time and still are to me. I'd love for it to continue on though as well. Instead of just a remaster, we'd have on going story and new things. Or even just all the stuff before the first as Daniel was in purgatory for a looong time before Samael shows up with the offer. Hell even Serious Sam is still going. The 4th is coming out literally next month
On my crt pc monitor my original runs fast and smooth.the game was not for flat screens so maybe slight pixel lag I see on flat screens compare to crt.
My personal remarks will be here. But 2004 Vanilla is better. That's what I noticed in Hell & Damnation: 1. Shotgun does not have the sound of falling shotgun shells 2. Stake gun has a worse trail when stake flying 3. The Stake gun grenade launcher has a bad reload sound. Why does it have a reload sound at all when it's the sound of a stake sticking into a grenade? 4. The explosion effect of the Stake gun grenade is kind of funny. He doesn't even let out smoke, not to mention the small size of the explosion 5. A bad trail from a grenade, as well as no banal splashing of water when falling 6. Chaingun has a poor promotion when shooting. And he does not justify his rate of fire with this. And I also don't hear the shells falling 7. Bad Rocket Launcher Trail. But the pleasant light from a flying rocket 8. The shurikens of Electrodriver does not have a trails or is it almost invisible 9. Electrodriver: There is no trail of a flying disc during a combo attack. And even electricity in it! This is absurd 10. SMG does not have the sound of falling shells. 11. Fuel cylinders do not have the sound of hitting the ground. Their size is small. They do not reach the ground and are slightly above it. The area of the explosion seems very small 12. Bolt gun in vanilla have the faster reloading of stakes. In 2012, it is obviously worse. Bolt trails are poorly visible. There is no sound of bombs hitting the surface. No red lights after hitting the ground. The range of the shot is degraded 13. The Painkiller weapon has no animation when the "beacon" returned back to the weapon Vanilla is clearly better here
So, in summary: SHOTGUN/FREEZER: only the sound of cocking changed slightly STAKEGUN/GL: Less detailed animation of the actual shooting moment. The cables don't whip anymore (can't say if better or worse). The sound of grenade bouncing is removed. Grenade explosions now look like an alien testicle exploding in a small burst of glowing cum. CHAINGUN/RL: barrels' RPM is reduced, now the shots don't even look synchronized with barrels spinning. Muzzle flash seems to just have a flat white texture and looks cartoonish overall. Rockets don't feel like they're actually propelled. ELECTRODRIVER: the new lightning was probably made by the laziest game dev. SMG/FLAMETHROWER: Same deal with the muzzle flash as mentioned before. The flame looks like combined textures of fireplace fires, not an actual flamethrower fire. BOLT GUN/HEATER: the sound of bouncing mini-bombs is removed. Lights on the mini-bombs are removed as well. PAINKILLER: not better nor worse. Now, what was the point of this whole remake with half of the levels as DLC, worse, inconsistent graphics, lighting, and AO? Also, they removed the ability to bunny-hop which was a great feature of the first game. You could get to certain secrets only with BH. I know there's multiplayer but would it be so hard to modify the first game for this purpose?
One thing I love about steam is every thing you need for mods are mostly in the store.some of steam versions are actually better.they might sneak little more small detail like postal on steam will have better bones with added skull that original did not have.some times they do not post about it till som9 finds it.
Most classics dos games or early cd games like painkillers sucked on steam.I always get original cd or some kind prepackaged like good old games do.a lot old school mods do not work in steam that work on original old games cd but theres some old games on steam that has added cool futurees on the game.
Yeah, because PeopleCanFly (the studio of the original PK game) have put hard work and their hearts into their game. The latter devs were rookies or cashgrabbers.

7) Bolt Gun's firing animation was cut - all bolts disappear at the same time;
8) Painkiller's catch animation was completely ruined;
9) Heater's balls now don't glow red after first bounce.

the right barrel on the freezer is inverted, and the hammer on the chaingun doesn't move when firing
With a top end headphone I can attest that the sound quality across every single gun is noticably worse in the "updated" version.
I gotta say H&D Chain gun Rocket launcher projectiles do emit light, that's a nice detail

12. Bolt gun in vanilla have the faster reloading of stakes. In 2012, it is obviously worse. Bolt trails are poorly visible. There is no sound of bombs hitting the surface. No red lights after hitting the ground. The range of the shot is degraded
13. The Painkiller weapon has no animation when the "beacon" returned back to the weapon
Vanilla is clearly better here
I'd like the classic Painkiller on Xbox One
So, in summary:
SHOTGUN/FREEZER: only the sound of cocking changed slightly
STAKEGUN/GL: Less detailed animation of the actual shooting moment.
Why everyone saying the original has better graphics to me I like the h&d a little more but I barley see a difference cause both games look the same
why does the 2004 graphics look better than 2012?
Almost every weapon looks worst in the 2012 version like wtf.

Does any one of you know how can i get Painkiller for free ?
Yea.i got all original free.
Torrents your friend lol
@@ghostbombl8034 nvm, i brought it on steam a couple weeks ago lol
One thing I love about steam is every thing you need for mods are mostly in the store.some of steam versions are actually better.they might sneak little more small detail like postal on steam will have better bones with added skull that original did not have.some times they do not post about it till som9 finds it.
@@ghostbombl8034 best part is that most of the times they are free
@@rigooandu
What game is that?
2004👍
Most classics dos games or early cd games like painkillers sucked on steam.I always get original cd or some kind prepackaged like good old games do.a lot old school mods do not work in steam that work on original old games cd but theres some old games on steam that has added cool futurees on the game.
The flamethrower in the remaster is really pathetic.
First, well second really.
well would be nice to actually play the damn game on the PS5 -_- not involving PS Now
They are bacikley
They are all bickley the same
@@zanebeneke9556 they arent lol
Old skybox and water is better lol
Yeah, because PeopleCanFly (the studio of the original PK game) have put hard work and their hearts into their game. The latter devs were rookies or cashgrabbers.
@@demjan96 Cashgrabbers, and simply lazy bastards, that's Farm51 for you
hardly any difference of value in there
