      @@inchwormgardens I just got out of the hospital and was finally persuaded by my wife to get some help. I have over 100 ready to go outside (heirloom from seeds at all different stages - some flowering, others small seedlings.) I built a 10 x 10 x 10 cage and am growing tomatoes over the entire thing.
      Lots of pots since I had tomatoes until Christmas this year. Most of my annuals reseed but I sill plant a core of dill, basil, rosemary, tarragon, etc Best of luck for future growing!

      Hey there! Thank you so much! That is helpful feedback. I've felt a lack of inspiration for making new videos recently so this is a helpful suggestion. My wife is the chicken queen so maybe I'll get her on here for a full tour of the chicken set up. Thanks again!

    How is your garden going lately? I have a couple small tomatoes, a few baby cukes, a few beans. I have not seen even one bee even though there are some zinnias. The 2 tomatillos are not forming fruit so tried some flower to flower hand pollination today. Have a good weekend!!

    • @inchwormgardens
      @inchwormgardens  2 роки тому

      Hi Jeannie! I just saw a video of your garden. It looks so good! Once the word gets out the bees will be flocking to your garden!
      Mine is growing well too. The peas are starting to fade out but the summer crops are all coming up nicely. Some good looking tomatoes are setting fruit. I have one volunteer tomatillo growing by the chicken tunnel. I don't expect it to fruit since it doesn't have a companion to cross pollinate but I didn't have the heart to rip it out.
      I'll do another garden tour video for you soon!

    Can you please do a video on how to deal with the wind and insane rain!! They always seem to kill all my starts

    • @inchwormgardens
      @inchwormgardens  2 місяці тому

      This is a good idea! Thank you. I don't really have a great solution for this though.. Make sure the soil around the plant has some sort of mulch/covering so the heavy rain doesn't splash soil all over the plants. Staking any taller plants should help with the wind. A more permanent solution for wind would be to create some sort of wind break (like a fence or row of bushes)

    Love your tour. You have so many interesting things!! What do you do with comfrey? It is beautiful with the blue flowers. Did you say the chickens eat the ground cherries? I heard that the Prarie fire tomato is sweeter than the Sungold hybrid tomato. Did not get seeds this season. Can’t wait for your review. I have about 30 flower pots full of herbs. Is the black eyed Susan vine a perennial? I hope Wesley’s watermelon does well. I grey strawberry and Ali baba last year and had so much trouble picking out a ripe watermelon, even though I followed directions. I think some watermelons maybe have to be picked when the vine is really dying. What did you do with the barley last year? Love your chickens!! I bet they are like family. Also looking forward to the reviews of those other tomatoes. The strawberry I think🚒

    • @inchwormgardens
      @inchwormgardens  2 роки тому +1

      Hey! Thanks so much! This one was just for you 😉
      The comfrey was growing all around the property when we moved in. The previous owner didn't know what it was so I think maybe the original homeowner must have planted it. It's very established and we love having it. We haven't really used it to it's full potential yet. I know it's very useful and you can make a great fertilizer "tea" out of it. The flowers taste like cucumber but I've read they're mildly toxic so we don't eat many.
      The chickens love eating the ground cherries but we don't like sharing them because they're so good, haha. So I grew a few extra plants for them to peck at.
      I didn't know that about the Prairie Fire! That's awesome. Can't wait to try it. I'll definitely do a Variety Spotlight on all those new tomato varieties.
      30 pots of herbs! Wow! Those are the best to have around. You can always find a use for herbs.
      the Black Eyed Susan vine is perennial in zones 10 and 11 so it won't survive our winter here. I'm hoping it gets big enough to cover that whole trellis before winter. Looking forward to a lot more flowers!
      I hope Wesley's watermelon does well too! I have not had any luck growing it before either but I had to give it another shot :)
      The barley was nice to have last year. It looks cool when it goes to seed and then dries out. We didn't really use it for anything last year. I just saved a bunch of seeds and gave some to the chickens. This year maybe we'll soak them and make some "oatmeal" or something.
      Thanks again for your continued interest in our garden!

      @inchwormgardens  Рік тому

      The bucket potatoes didn't turn out very good but it was 100% user error! haha. I didn't add the extra soil soon enough so they only grew in the very bottom couple inches. I did have a fair amount of tiny potatoes though! I will be trying again this year. Thanks for watching!

      Hi there! That plant is called Salad Burnet. It grew really well! I eventually had to move it because it got bigger than I thought. The plant is edible but I didn't really like the flavor of it honestly. The very young leaves were okay but otherwise it was pretty bitter. The flowers were really pretty though. I think it's worth growing just for fun. Enjoy!

      Hey Jeannie! Thanks for checking in. I know it's been way too long since I've posted! We're all doing great here. We've had a crazy heat wave for the past month or so. It's been so dry too, so we've had some extra challenges in the garden this year. Luckily we got some good hard rains the past few days and the garden is happy once again. I'll be getting out there more and shooting some more videos. Thanks again! Hope all is well with you.

      Hey there! You can check the average last frost date for your zip code here: www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates/TN/Franklin
      Typically, I start my summer veggies around the middle of February. That gives me about 8 weeks until my average last frost date. I usually plant them out in the garden around mid April but we seem to always have one late frost where I have to scramble to cover my plants! So I might wait a little bit later this year. Good luck out there!

    What do you use to control pests? It’s pretty buggy there.

    • @inchwormgardens
      @inchwormgardens  Рік тому

      Hello! You're right, it is pretty buggy here! Honestly, I don't have any great pest control methods worked out yet. I hand pick the cabbage worms off the kale and feed them to the chickens but that gets old pretty quick. I used a trap crop method once for flea beetles. They flocked to my eggplants (which I'm not a big fan of anyway) and that kept them off the other plants. I've used beer traps for slugs before which worked well but I kept drinking the beer before the slugs could get to them, JK ;) Still working on this one!

    New to area, are rodents a problem?

    • @inchwormgardens
      @inchwormgardens  3 місяці тому

      Hey there! We do have voles that dig around the garden. They ate some of my peas but otherwise they don't seem to cause too much damage. We also have rats, but I think they were lured here by our chickens (feed) and my open compost pile. So they might not be a problem everywhere. We also have moles that dig around the front yard but not too damaging, just annoying.
