    I have a G45 standard which I think was from the previous series of G45s. It doesn’t have the sound hole, it does have a binding, the front pin is in a slightly different position and it plays absolutely great. In fact it was a bit of a struggle finding other guitars that played as well even in the 2-3x price range of the G45.

    Once again good and fair video. Two unrelated things. First I’m always amazed at how well your channel records guitars. I suspect and I could be wrong that how you record does slightly more justice to a guitar than I would feel about them if I played them in person. Second and unrelated, perhaps you’ve done this but I’d like to here your take should I buy used or new. For example I think you could buy a vintage Guild for similar price that would beat that guitar in sound and quality but it might be a little banged up. Keep producing interesting content, thanks!

    Theyre hand made in Montana. Watch the factory tour. I'd buy that guitar before I'd buy most imports and cookie cutter guitars. And a hard case is ALWAYS better but you could get one for 200 bucks later. Where you say there they're selling the name I would say I'm buying the craftsmanship of a relatively small group of craftsman in Bozeman, Montana. Then there's that name. My two.

    I’ll try to make a thoughtful comment. I watched the Driftwood video when it came out and it revealed workmanship flaws most novices or budget seekers would not seek out or consider. Taylor and Martin ( and Fender electric) have perfected the laundry soap- snack chip approach of creating more and more models to steal all the shelf space they can. Taylor particularly , though, has an excellent quality control system and a good balance of prices and materials. Playability is never an issue with Taylor and the sounds are good and consistent , if not exceptional. Gibson comes in with this model, which appears to lack basic quality control ( perhaps they are assigning construction to their newer workers?) and so -so sound. They , I think, would be better off staying as a higher end manufacturer and keeping quality control higher and improving than try to crowd into an already too crowded market with people who do it better. Their new management promised this, but then we get the G45.

    • @keestoft250
      @keestoft250 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah I watched the same video, it's pretty revealing. Brands like Furch, Dowina and Eastman are laying waste to the quality mid price market and I'm not sure the big names have any answers?

    • @rzh3443
      @rzh3443 2 роки тому +3

      Perhaps I should have added that, if you are going to enter a crowded market segment, you had better have a product that is at least as good, preferably better , than what’s already out there. A misfire at the beginning dooms your success chances.

    That is a nice fair review Jeremy. One of the numerous things those "Driftwood" boys pointed out that I agree with is the fact that Gibson finished (polished) the guitar after assembling the neck to the body. If you ever ever a need a neck reset, you will also need a finish fix since the finish will be damaged. Additionally, the test they (Driftwood) did for scratches was revealing in the damage it caused because the finish is so thin. It is disconcerting that Gibson has cut some very important corners just to keep the guitar American made, all solid and under a grand. I give Sweetwater some credit too for having the guts to allow for some objective unbiased reviews like yours. Good point you made as well about the binding (lack thereof) not being a cosmetic issue as opposed to a damage control issue. For the user group this guitar is intended for, they left out protections and features to help those folks out. That said, walnut is awesome and the guitar sounds very nice and hopefully Gibson will refine this guitar. I think the previous one (G-45) a few years ago was a lot more robust. Great review!

    If you have a problem hearing, you can hear it. Well maybe not everybody but I have lost some, not all, hearing in my right ear so I was interested in these. I tried out the L-00 earlier this week. It wasn't the prettiest sounding guitar I've played. In fact they have a Martin 00V on the wall which I've played and the little Gibson is in the little league compared but I can hear it better if that makes sense. I wasn't aware that the G-45 will slimmer. I have a DX Martin my shoulder can't play any longer. Now I'm thinking about going back and trying the G-45 it might solve two problems at the same time. I have to wonder what would happen if you oiled the walnut with something really light like linseed oil. Aesthetically it would look gorgeous but what would it do to the sound? If it matters they are very very light.

    Jeremy,
    I bought the “pre-generation” series G45 Studio this past April.
    It’s my first Gibson. Years ago I wanted a ‘94-98 Gospel. The G45 is a bit upscale from that guitar. But the vibe is similar.
    I agree that it’s a stepping stone to a J35 or J45. It may even drive one to look at the Eastman Slope shoulders. The E10SS is very Gibson-y but without the “growl”.
    Love the channel! Keep doing what you do.

      I like mine. I absolutely do not love the Sonitone pickup. I forget that until I plug in. It emphasizes the bass and drops the high end. I actually prefer my Takamine P3DC plugged in. Unplugged it’s a toss up. The Gibson’s short scale does make it a pure joy to play. The pickup is likely to go, or I’m just not gonna plug it in anymore.

    I have played a few of these now and my impression is this: Yes this is Gibson trying to say “not all of our guitars cost $3k!” And they are trying to make a guitar that does come in affordably… However I still feel like for what Taylor can offer you in the American Dream series and what brands like Seagull can make in Canada for half the money of the Gibson it’s a really hard sell. Personally I have a couple of Eastman guitars that get most of my stage time and they have been solid performers. But I can understand not wanting to buy a Chinese guitar… For the money I just don’t feel like Gibson is measuring up with a guitar that will last, be worthy of its price tag and if anything they will end up with people looking elsewhere when they upgrade. Gibson really came out strong in 2019 on the electrics they relaunched with but the acoustic line has really taken a back seat, and it’s disappointing. I’ve seen some alarming QC issues on their high end guitars and frankly… I don’t see an end on site. Gibson has a backlog of orders like everybody else but they are trying to crank out numbers like it’s 2021, yet make guitars like it’s still 1952. I wish them well.

    My guess is this guitar will have a difficult time competing with budget friendly brands like Blueridge, Recording King, and Eastman. I know most of their guitars are made overseas, but for half or 2/3 the price of this Gibson you can get an outstanding guitar, rather than an ok Gibson model. So I guess if you have to have a US Gibson, this guitar is ok, but there are so many options below this price point that would likely blow this guitar away.

Our dealership has no new ones and only one used. They say new Martins are a year out at least. So there are no new Martins to compare your G series Gibson to. I'm told that this is a local thing and also related to how large the dealership is. So a Martin you can't buy compared to a Gibson you can walk out with or receive in a couple of days from Sweetwater may be the better bet. It's just a thought.

    My greatest mistake I made with guitars was buying cheap guitars that I eventually sold at a loss until I could buy one I genuinely wanted. I would much rather spend a little more to get a new Larrivee, a 15 series Martin, an Eastman or even a US Guild.

    To me the pain of playing a dreadnought is the trade off for getting a full spectrum of sound, if it doesn't have a full-bodied base end I might as well play a smaller guitar. Obviously an oversimplification of acoustic tone but I think the argument works (at least in my mind)

    Thank you for the video. Well done and well explained. I purchased LAST YEARS version on a G45 before they added the sound port. I am older, with shoulder and neck issues therefore the thinner body appealed to me. I previously owned a J15 and loved the sound. The G45 is very easy to play easy to hold, is very light and the neck feels great to my hands.
    BUT- the sound was lifeless to me, no spirit, no soul, nothing to make me want to keep playing it. It also feels very cheaply made. I am still beating myself up for selling the J15. That’s a much better guitar, in my opinion, if you want the walnut sound. You can find those used for around the same price point.
    I think the top sound port is a gimmick to make the guitar sound better to the player. I sold the G45
    I truly like Gibson, but think they have better options, you just need to save a bit more or look for that really sweet used one. I found a L00 Studio Rosewood that a really enjoy playing. (I know, some say it’s not a true L00 Gibson but this one really shines for me).
    Thank you again

    That chord progression you played at the very end of the video is that a mayday parade song?
    So before I comment on the guitar I thought I should throw it out there that I only play/own Gibson Acoustics.. so obviously I love the company and the brand but I'll still be 100% honest and not biased. Lol I've never played one so I don't know about the feel and how it plays.. but I think the sound overall sounds pretty good not great not terrible. I agree with you I think it could be perfect for the younger player or even a more experienced player that's on a budget I think it'd be a great guitar for that situation.
    I don't think it would be great for the player that's use to playing more of a "Professional" grade or "Higher End" guitar.. about 3 months ago I got a 2012 Gibson Advance Jumbo, It's seriously Unbelievable and now I don't want to play anything else.. lol.. For the price of $1,200 if it was me I would rather find a J-15 which you can find for that price or even cheaper, much better of a guitar. the quality and sound is all the way around so much better. I'd probably even look for a J-45 Studio over the. G45.. But if it fit My price range and a j-15 or j45 Studio wasn't an option, I would take this and I would be happy with it and I'd play the heck out of it!!

    I’ve heard a big issue is also the volume. People say it’s not usable for noisy scenarios or gigs without plugging it into an amp. It would have been helpful to hear this model against the volume and tone of a J-45 or any other comparable guitar without that sound hole. There are other brands that have these ports, but I’ve never heard anyone complain about the bass response and volume from those.
    I just feel like people can do better with a mid to high end Epiphone for less money than this particular model. It’s made in the US, but unless they can up the ante, sometimes it makes sense to buy guitars from other countries if they’re producing guitars with better specs and quality control - and there’s nothing wrong with that! It’s nice to buy American made, but it doesn’t always make sense. Like if you’re saying this is a starter guitar for a teen, how many parents are buying 1100-1200 guitars for their kids? It’s not realistic.

    I fell for the first offering of the G-45 last year and was disappointed. I may be interested in this guitar if it were full body depth and didn’t have the sound port. Same with the jumbo and songwriter version they came out with. I really think Gibson is overthinking things. Jeremy, you need to try the Epiphone inspired by Gibson J-45; it blows this guitar away. The tone of the epiphone is considerably different than a Gibson j-45 but it’s great in its own right.

  • @nickspitzley8539
    @nickspitzley8539 2 роки тому

    I really like the tone. But hey. I'd play the heck out it. I've always wanted to have a Gibson. A 00 one but I like that this isn't too bassy. The two main guitars I have now are "high end" Chinese guitars. So for a couple hundred less they have more features but there are ethical questions about those that you don't have to worry about with this Gibson. I mean my D'angelico (OM) Tammany is second to nothing almost in terms of tone and quality. And those are now $999 new. So it's pretty crazy now that Chinese guitars are coming with premium deluxe appointments. I mean this has to compete with the high end Epiphone acoustics. Yikes.

      @@briwood6328 BS. The projection, low bass is due to the thin finish. The G45 is more than adequate for 89% of players... it's your guitar skills that would sweeten the pot... not big bucks $$$ thrown at an instrument. The fact that 98% of guitar players lack the guitar skills to make it sing isn't the guitar's fault.

  • @scke3717

    Wouldnt put this in the high school student category with Taylor 100 or Academy as the G-45 is more than 50% pricier and no pickup. I have the G-00 which is a keeper not only for the soundport but because its even more compact than the Taylor shape. Also have the G-45 on order but will be more discerning about the sound from a bigger body. With a thin nitro finish+ all solid woods, one can hope these open up over time and loose their "stiffness"....BTW, this guitar gets positive comments from folks who actually own it for a good amount of time, so what does that say?

  • @67Zink
    @67Zink 2 роки тому +1

    The guitar is all wood and will sweeten with time when it opens up... this is a fact that seems lost to most reviewers ===esp ones that tend to lean towards the guitar snob camp. I have other brands too , including two value guitars (Eastman E40D and E10D). In my opinion, the sound I hear from this G-45 doesn't touch them. I have an OM mahogany Guild that sounds similar. Or you could buy an Eastman for half the price and end up with a much better sounding and far better built instrument. But you can't buy an Eastman from Sweetwater, and because most channel owners in the UA-cam guitarverse seem to actually be unofficial Sweetwater employees (sans retirement and healthcare benefits) we don't get Eastman reviews. I bought the G-Writer after 3h testing against Taylor, Lakewood, Eastman, Ibanez, Furch, Maton. I played a lot in the 1000 - 3000$ priceange. I like snappy, transparent, shimmery sounds. The classical Martin sound is not my cup of tea. And what can I say, this guitar is incredible easy to play, super nice note seperation, good sustain and especially fingerpicking has a very present sound. There are not much lows, but as said, not what I am looking for. The low end is punchy (you can play powerchords which sounds horrible on a lot of other acoustics) and fit into the transparent overall sound. I never owned an acoustic nor electric Gibson. So definitely not a fanboy of this brand. Its not perfect, but I found a lot of worse stuff even in 3000$ guitars. If you are looking for a mordern sound with super easy playability just test it unbiased. I respect the opinion of the professionals and can´t say anything about durability at this moment, but as a amateur, mostly bedroom player, its just fun to play.

    • @67Zink

      I agree with you. Being a player with 25 yrs, I also know about "snobs" that wont play anything that is under a certain price point, OR lacks a name on the head stock. The way I see it is that these guitars are ALL WOOD and will open up with time (player hours) and they will 99.9% sweeten in tone. I also believe that a player with skills can make a 300$ guitar sound like a 1500-2000$ guitar... Unfortunately, I suspect that 80% of guitar snobs lack the skills and thus put too much emphasis on cosmetic and 'artificial" parameters like $$$ and Brand Name into the mix. In this case it's a Brand Name that isn't living up to it's high dollar cousins, hence it needs to be knocked down. I have played a G00 and a G45 and the tones are unique and defined and in now way "DUD" or unworthy. (Looks and resale value to me is secondary to tone and playability.-- but that's just me).

    I think the soundport is a smart move by Gibson. This guitar is not designed for professional musicians but for beginners who will never play it on a stage. If there is no audience it makes sense to me to direct the sound towards the player rather than towards the wall of a room. Whatever sound quality it lacks may be mitigated by the fact that the player will probably perceive it as louder and more present. BTW, how does it sound if you install a feedback buster into the regular soundhole?
