    To me it is clear. The upper opening is for easily dropping your pick inside so that you don't have to do it inconveniently from the front opening.

    Think of the body as a speaker box. A port can help bass response. It could also direct sound up to your ears...like a monitor of sorts. I'm interested in your thoughts.

    Gibson makes a rubber plug for the hole BTW. You order it from your music store. I have the G-45 I use it live, love it. The player port comes in handy when the monitoring sucks and you really need to hear your guitar.

    I’m a huge fan of the shorter scale length after having a Taylor A10 as my campfire guitar. Can play those Dave Matthews chords without moving to a smaller body size. I’ll have to check these out.
    Overall, I prefer the classic design and I think the Yamaha TA technology is the biggest gamechanger on the market as a songwriter.

    I was enamored with them at first. I felt I was hearing what others did when I played or what I had recorded. It didn’t take long for them to annoy me as it was just too in my face. I have one ported guitar but I had it placed under the neck so it wasn’t aiming right at me.

    Sound doesn't come out of the holes.

    • @roberthastings708
      @roberthastings708 Рік тому

      In an accoustic guitar the sound does come from the box. Like a speaker enclosure. Holes in the boxes are referred to as vents. The box can be tuned by adjusting the vent to the box size and characteristics.

    • @roberthastings708
      @roberthastings708 Рік тому

      I thought a little more clarification was in order. In accoustic guitars....
      The strings move air which resonates the wood top, sides, and back. That resonance is projected through the sound hole. So sound does come out of the holes. But the sound waves are produced by the strings and wood.

    • @leegollin4417
      @leegollin4417 Рік тому

      @@roberthastings708 that's what I said. The sound doen't come out of the holes. I use the top to do tremolo with my palm. The sound comes mostly from the top resonating like a drum head. The holes really just to allow the air inside to move more freely. I could see a side port adding volume but it doesn't direct sound to the player's ear like the marketing suggests.

    Sounds like you were playing Kate Bush Army Dreamers. Great acoustic sound. In the late 90's had a late 1980's Fender entry level dreadnaught acoustic that for the fun of it I put a subwoofer port bezel in the same spot as Gibson placed their sound port. I honestly don't remember being taken by it's personal tone improvement. I never liked acoustic piezo saddle pickups. I was spoiled with the DeArmond D240 sound hole pickup in the early 1980's and never liked anything else. It's wire wound and piezo together. (maybe 230's has piezo in it too?). My D240 through a Fender Princeton Reverb with light tremolo is a dream!

    I could hear the g hole, when you unplugged it, could hear it . . . but I think it looses projection, cuz air moves out of the two holes instead of the mainly through the one pointed at the audience . . . and the player doesn't need to hear cuz they are holding the bloomin' thing, so to me, the g hole isn't necessary. wHEN they make two hole jets, they always put a second engine cuz one engine with twin nozzles looks cool but loses some energy (4 acoustic guitars sound) splitting the diff than just one hole. This is coming from a metal reso player where resonators have grills installed and many artistic design holes on the soundboard (but the noize comes from the cones inside).

  • @picksalot1
    @picksalot1 Рік тому +4

    Sound Ports have been around for a while. I added them to two of my guitars many years ago, and in both cases, they increased loudness from the player's position by 10-20%, and there is more bass and a fuller sound. One thing worth considering is that adding a port will likely affect "standing waves" inside the guitar, and that may affect how the guitar sounds from the front and how it sounds when recorded. The ports that I added are about a third the size of the ones in the video.

    Yea the pickguard thing is lame.when you buy a brand new guitar,for Gibson money, you'd expect it to be pristine. Like buying a new car,you'd expect maybe 50 miles on it from text driving and moving it, but if you were paying brand new off the lot MSRP and it had a few thousand miles on it and some dings and scratches or chipped glass, you'd expect that if it was of concern to you, you wouldn't be told it's normal,it's no big deal,your overblowing it etc. A pickguard gets scratches.sure. but it's like Gibson seem to have a lot of issues of showing up brand new,with some kind of issue.and I've heard a lot of stories about the guitar outlet or whoever sold it as new, saying it's supposed to be like that,and washig their hands of it. Case in point the guitaristas bought a Gibson SG from peach guitars and it showed up all scratched. All over the place. And thy said it's supposed to be like that and it's black and it's normal. And we'll give ya a 50$ in store credit.on an 1800$+ guitar? Are ya kidding, nope.it happened. He had receipts. I'll take a scratched up pickguard for a new pedal to be thrown in.but that's just me

    You did a very fair job, and I'm not doubting that you like it. But, I'm sorry, my ears vehemently disagree with you. There's no accounting for taste. What I heard was a tinny, thin sounding acoustic, on par with what I'd expect to pay 500, or a maximum of 800 bucks for from a more realistic maker. If the bones of great sound aren't there, things like this port don't make a real difference one way or another. I'm sure they're trying this out on what they consider a "budget" guitar, to see what reaction it gets. As always, piezo sounds are just a sad joke.
