    I remembered the other band besides Morbid Angel and Hexenhaus that used the Blessed are the Sick artwork. It was the first demo from Swedish legends Gorement in 1991.

    Morbid Angel is the band that get me in Death Metal. I discovered them with the song "Abominations" on the french Death Metal compilation Masters of Brutality when I was 15.
    One remarkable thing about Morbid Angel is that the band was led by a charismatic frontman and a genius lead guitarist ; a pattern that had greatly contributed to the success of iconic Rock and Hard Rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Van Halen...

      Yeah that’s a good point. Although as I say in the video I loved their pre-David Vincent stuff too.

    In not even a huge Morbid Angel fan, but Where the Slime Live is one of the sickest, heaviest songs I've ever heard. You hear the influence of that song not just in death metal, but hardcore too these days

    • @themetalspotlight
      @themetalspotlight  6 місяців тому

      I get it, but as a big fan of their earlier albums I was less excited about that direction they went in on that song and the album. But I still thought it was good enough to include in the episode.

  • @cizmar1972

    Where the Slime Live, in retrospect is a killer track, one of the best off Domination for sure. And no it is not weaker or "pussified", it was just different for them. Alters though, is not only their best album, it is one of the greatest deathmetal albums ever written.

    • @themetalspotlight
      @themetalspotlight  6 місяців тому +1

      Yeah that’s why I said it’s divisive because I’ve seen equal amounts of love and hate for that song and for Domination as a whole. Personally I’m somewhat ambivalent to it. I don’t hate it but I definitely wouldn’t say it’s a favorite.

    Nice job!
    Trey is the most underrated guitarist AND songwriter in my opinion.
    I get that the oldschool kind guys like the Vincent era more, because that's the "original", but the songwriting went to next level when Tucker joined.
    Gateways is the golden standard album for me in every aspect! 🤘

    Just popping in here to give appreciation to the Steve Tucker era I know its a Hot Take. (Disclaimer)I love Altars and Covenant as much as we all do. Heretic and Formulas are God tier albums to me. Formulas is like Altars 2.0 in alot of ways, with Dave gone, I feel like Trey had full creative control over the sound and the theme (evident with all the Sumerian stuff) Heretic has a .....different style production I realize, but to me That album has the best song writing from the Steve era and Pete was in his ABSOLUTE PRIME!!

      You know, I appreciate you giving 'Formulas' some love. I hate 'Heretic' and can't say anything good about it. 'Formulas' though, I didn't like at first but it has grown on me over the years a lot. In my opinion, 'Formulas' was the last "good" level album they made. Some of Pedro's best drumming is on 'Formulas', agreed there as someone who has been playing drums since 2001. Cheers!

    Great vid! I personally regard Blessed Are the Sick as their magnus opus. While Alters is incredible, I like the controlled refinement in Blessed. Also I find the Alters cover art corny, while Blessed's cover is refined and hints towards an elegant experience with the occult.

    Funny how much the perception of a band can differ depending on the moment of discovering them. 'Domination' was the first Morbid Angel album I heard (I was just a bit too young for the earlier ones) and it was an absolute hurricane, an album that turned my world upside down. Everything about it is wonderful, from the sound, through the riffs, to Vincent's brilliant, amazing vocals :)

      Absolutely true. Perception is totally subjective and based on the point of entry. Even though it’s lower down my list I agree that it’s a great album. Its highlights are sky high top tier Morbid Angel.

    One thing i love from morbid angel is that all their albums sound different, they always evolved and each has a unique sound without losing the morbid angel sound, the trey azagthoth style. So besutiful. Unfortunately looks like morbid angel is close to its end, since trey is too old already and he has a drinking problem. But their music will alqays be here and enjoyable. I think altars if madness ir overrated, they evolved much more and got better and better musically, i prefer covenant, formulas fatal to the flesh and kingdoms disdained

  • @strongbad666
    @strongbad666 26 днів тому

    The first two Morbid Angel albums are flawless to me. Huge influence on me and my friends at the time. I love Mike Browning as a drummer but didn't like the demos (except for the '87 one) or the shelved first album 'Abominations'. 'Covenant' was good and certainly more polished than the previous two but wasn't as consistent. 'Domination' was okay; some bangers, some absolutely terrible songs. I think the addition of Erik Rutan on backup guitars from Ripping Corpse (another fantastic early 90's New Jersey thrash/death metal band) was a great addition and gives the album the polish it does. 'Formulas' was an album I didn't like that much at the time but wow, it has grown on me quite a bit and is IMHO, is the last good album they made. Everything after was mediocre or downright terrible in my opinion. Speaking of Terrorizer, an old Los Angeles area band before Pedro moved to Florida and Jesse moved to the UK, agreed that 'World Downfall' is an absolute classic. One of Scott Burns best recordings too. Good video!

    Disappointed to see the discussion stops at domination. Formulas, Gateways, and heretic are all great releases and they showcase Morbid angel under treys purist vision of the band. Some of the most forward pushing material and outward thinking stuff is on those records (not to dismiss the legendary first three albums ofc) and they get slept on too much, especially heretic due to its shitty production. IMO illud is the only truly bad morbid album. With all that being said, I recently saw I Am Morbid live with Dave Vincent and Pete Sandoval and they were great live.

    • @themetalspotlight
      @themetalspotlight  2 місяці тому +3

      I always just take the lyrics in metal as fantasy stuff anyway. Like watching a horror or fantasy movie. I don't take the lyrics seriously into my life and philosophy at all but just enjoy them as an aesthetic addition to enhance the fury of the music.

      @themetalspotlight Exactly, well said. I'm atheist so it super doesn't bother me. But also doesn't mean much to me, and in no way affects me. I'm a sweetheart, just love heavy, rough, nasty music 🤷 I've always considered death metal as the musical version of horror films or books.
