  • Dr. Gavin Chan MBBS, General Registration (MED0001175745) and Dr. Mobin Master discuss the longevity of temporary hyaluronic acid fillers. They challenge the common belief that these fillers last 6 to 18 months by using evidence from MRI scans of patients who have had filler.

They are not saying fillers don’t work, all they are saying is that ... consider dissolving it in time plus keep a good eye on how your look changes and do u really want to get another procedure of fillers . Great education . The main thing is that you can never stop aging by being TOO aggressive Using these methods . U can slow it down and be realistic about all this .

It has taken me more than 8 years to finally feel comfortable and confident to post a review about Gavin Chan. In 2015 I went to the Victorian Cosmetic Institute & was talked into having 4mls of filler injected into my cheeks & nasolabial folds by self appointed cosmetic medicine specialist Dr Somaiye Kadivar. I was told it would lift my cheeks & that the filler was temporary & would last between
12-18 months. Once the procedure was over I looked in the mirror & noticed one cheek was higher while the other cheek was lower & further out from my nose. My nasolabial folds were arched, crooked, unnatural & everytime I smiled my cheeks would pop out like golf balls. I hated the results because the filler added volume instead of a lift like I requested. I made a complaint to Gavin Chan who said it was easily & instantly reversible by injecting Hyaluronidase which is used off label to dissolve fillers. After several attempts over the coming days & weeks it was quite obvious that the filler was still present. On one occasion Gavin Chan dissolved my tear troughs via the cheeks yet I never had filler in my tear troughs to begin with. On another occasion while injecting Hyaluronidase he also started to inject filler into my temple without prior warning. When I asked him why he was injecting my temple he told me he was compensating me for my troubles yet never mentioned that the temple is a danger zone & a risky area to inject. In total I had 6mls of filler injected into my face within 19 days, yet on the Victorian Cosmetic Institute's website it states that 1ml of filler is enough for the entire face. On each occasion Gavin Chan never informed me of the risks, dangers & complications associated with Hyaluronidase & never gave me a consent form to read and sign. A few years later I had a consultation with Professor Mark Ashton who is an expert in filler complications & he told me that if the filler hadn't dissolved by now than it was permanent. He gave me a referral for an MRI of the head which can detect the exact amount of filler & the exact location of the filler. The MRI report stated that I still had upto 4mls of filler in my face even after all the dissolving sessions over the many years. Gavin Chan then decided to look into MRl's & the longevity of fillers after I informed him of my MRI result & capitalised on it by making a UA-cam video claiming he made this discovery. In the meantime I noticed that my facial structure had collapsed, I developed deep hollows under my eyes, my cheeks caved in, my marionette lines were deep, long & dragged down. The corners of my lips sunk into my mouth & my skin was extremely loose, saggy & stretchy all the way down to my neck. Hyaluronidase did not dissolve my fillers but instead permanently dissolved my connective tissue as it can't distinguish between the skin's own HA & the HA in dermal fillers. Hyaluronidase has aged my facial features by 10 years & only a full facelift & necklift can fix this. In 2019 & 2020 I took Gavin Chan to VCAT requesting a refund & a corrective advertising order because his website falsely advertised that the temporary fillers they use last anywhere between 12-18 months. Gavin Chan was granted lawyers on the grounds that his business reputation was at stake while I had to represent myself. I cross examined him with over 90 questions & I presented over 100 pages of supporting evidence & documentation while he only had photos & amended clinical notes. The hearing was held over 2 days & my claims were eventually dismissed by the judge. Gavin Chan got away with not providing me with a consent form for Hyaluronidase on each occasion. I hold Gavin Chan responsible for destroying my looks & my life. The self appointed cosmetic surgeon as he once claimed to be isn't even a GP, he is just a medical practitioner & in my opinion has a special interest in portraying himself as the master of cosmetic injectables in an unregulated industry.
Gavin Chan is an injectable junkie, obsessed with the syringe & makes no apologies for ruining my life. Gavin Chan pays a lot of money to have my Google review removed on more than one occasion and I’ve been threatened with legal action by his lawyers for coming forward. He doesn’t want anyone finding out the truth.

It took several sessions to dissolve (and still can’t get it all). I had doctors tell me that it was impossible for the filler to still be there. But a doctor finally agreed to try dissolving it and within hours of the dissolver, I looked 10 years younger. And the filler definitely migrated to places nearby that I never had injected. What a costly and stressful lesson! I feel vindicated to hear you talk about this.

it's very possible in face. I see this as a common error of practitioners - they inject just forward of the jowls in the 'pre-jowl sulcus' and end up accidentally injecting into the jowl, or having filler migrate back into the jowls. And as the videos hows, filler lasts for a very very long time. This is not common knowledge. This video pioneers this concept, and I think will cause a big shake-up of what practitioners believe.

Apparently he destroyed this lady's face with execive fillers back in 2015 when she wanted them removed he kept injecting hyluronidase but to her was clear the fillers were there after years. She went to another doctor who ordered an MRI and saw 4 ml of fillers still there even after all this time and hyluronidase. She took her findings back to him he only offered more hyluronidase and ended up stealing the finding of MRI to detect fillers and coining it as his.The ladys face is all deflated and aged now after all this. Lol so ya not so great of a guy afterall.

What a relief to see doctors actually taking time to research and question their applied practices publicly like this, so thank you for the transparency. Here in Bangkok we have a plethora of beauty clinics that offer just about everything from botox, lasers, thread lifting, fillers, to lipo. The issue here is the market is quite unregulated. With injectables it can be difficult to tell the validity of some of the products , as I have been told there are many fake/knock off products from china being distributed to clinics at a lower price. Not to mention the liscesing requirements needed to administer here. The scary thing is, what kind of substances are in these knock offs? I assume Australia doesn't t have this kind of issue.

We recently had a death from a dodgy woman coming from China and doing illegal plastic surgery. I think she was doing a boob job on some poor young woman (she owned the clinic!) and the “patient” went into cardiac arrest. I’m pretty sure this clinic would have also been injecting some Chinese fillers and muscle relaxants that are not up to code. A lot of young ladies are getting “qualified” to inject too, so I expect a lot more problems arising in the near future. So although we are regulated, dodgy things still happen. I went to Dr Chan because I would only trust a qualified Doctor to go near my face.

I am so grateful you posted this video. Just getting into Aesthetics after 20 years in medicine, I have been seeing people with extremely irregular facial contours in between their filler touch ups, as well as the "duck lips", which are not anatomic for the human race or aesthetically pleasing at all. I have seen "experts" who promote these fillers boast about having 16 syringes in their face, but all I see is horribly expanded mask like faces that look too big for their bodies. Since I have seen them in between filler injections, I had a feeling that the fillers degrade irregularly, creating loose sagging skin, and they really have no option except to inject even larger volume of fillers to prop everything up into place again. I was holding off on getting into fillers, and glad I did. So glad to see your MRI pictures finally explaining that they actually migrate away from their intended location, and validating what I had been worried about all along. Thank God for honest practitioners like you both who dared to post this video!

Having better guidelines and understanding in particular on the migration of lip filler is really important (I.e. if some pt's are more susceptible, which products are more likely for this to occur, if volume is related etc).

Also many people are mislead by the swollen appearance immediately after having injections. Especially with lip fillers. They think the filler has dissolved too quickly but actually the swelling has subsided. It is the effect you also discussed when talking about lip fillers: They dont remember anymore what they looked like before the injections, pre-swelling, and only have the image of the plump look from the swelling in mind and are disappointed. It is quite misleading, thats for sure, but I find many people also have unrealistic expectations what can be achieved in one session or with this or that amount of filler.

My congratulations Gavin on investigating the adverse consequences of filler injections and then, to have the integrity to alter your injection practice. based on the evidence you have obtained through your collaboration with radiologist colleague Mobin Masters. You can see the community significance of your reporting by the over 2000 people responding with their story and appreciation. This information needs to be reported in a scientific way. As a plastic surgeon who helps people who come to hate their 'filler face' after 5 to 10 years, it becomes apparent that fillers do not stop facial aging, they conceal it. All the time, aging has continued behind the 'mask' of the filler. The final time of revelation comes when the fillers are dissolved when rejuvenation surgery is undertaken to refreshen the appearance. Now the appearance can become natural again with freedom from the anxiety of being dependant on fillers. It takes a certain courage

You are so right about the fact that we forget what we used to look like before fillers. This weekend i filled My lips for the first time in almost a year and i Still had fillers left from a year ago. I didn't think there were anything left but when i looked at My nurses pictures from before i did any fillers i Saw that there were actually quite a lot left!

It is refreshing to see two doctors who are actively observing the effects of their medium and methods over the long term, that are inquisitive enough to dig deeper to get to the root of what’s happening instead of just brushing off patient observations in favor of what the manufacturer/big pharma is pushing, or what the industry has yet to acknowledge as a whole. It should be the way anyone approaches any practice (medical or otherwise), which is through continuous observation, learning and improvement in their practice. Well done!
Since this was posted a year ago, I am wondering if this filler migration phenomenon has picked up more recognition globally, especially in the states where I am from? Seems like using a dissolver in between (annual) filler replenishments might be a plausible solution for the time being...

At 35 I had juvederm just around my mouth and it lasted 11 years at 52 I’m having it done again today.. it’s only slightly noticeable so I would say it was very worth it!!

Having fillers is a choice you can make. It will really depend on the concerns/problems you have versus the potential risk in your situation. Everyone is different. Hope the video helped you work out what you want to do.

Or, you can use Ounce Of Nature's Hyaluronic Acid Facial Hydrator instead of getting fillers. @ounceofnature

I don’t think the phrase “age gracefully” is entirely helpful, there are a lot of people who choose to do cosmetic treatments - are they ageing disgracefully?

As someone who has bee getting fillers for the past 16 years i can very much agree on the long lasting part. Ive found myself needing less and less for touch ups

How long would you say they last? If you had them just once how long would the results be noticeable? I got 0.75ml in my chin 3 weeks ago and I’m regretting it so much.

@@MissUltimaThule most last years. New studies show they do infact last years and years. When someone says their lips or where ever didn't last more than 6m/1yr it's that it has migrated out of the position and spread so you don't notice as much
