I haven't heard about the emotional durability. But I must admit I have such pieces in my wardrobe. The one that I can think of immediately is my denim jacket. I bought it in H&M in 2014 and I take it out every single spring/summer. It has faded a lot but that gives it even more character. I am honestly convinced that if we wear and love a piece it simply becomes our second skin for many years to come ❤️ Great video as always, Signe ✌️

My husband's entire wardrobe is a perfect example of the concept. Any time I buy him someting new, he never wears the new piece but clings on to the clothes he loves that he's had for years.

i have a pair of jeans i bought at a consignment shop in 2022 this is the first pair of jeans that embodies that for me. after a year of almost daily wear, the crotch wore out and i was so sad! after a few months, i finally was like i can't give up on them. so i went to go ask a local tailor and she was like, "yea i can fix that no problem" YAY! i was so happy and months after that when i got a hole in the corner of my back pocket, i took the jeans back to her. and i just know in my heart, that i will patch up these jeans until they fall apart.

Great advice! I think where boots are concerned that you own and wear all the time it is better to buy new. Even though they are more expensive. A shoe maker explained that different people put different wear on boots and shoes so by the time you own them they do not imprint to your feet, wear wise as people walk differently, maybe heavier etc
I think it’s a good thing to bare in mind. Also cost per wear justifies the investment.🌷
Thank you for introducing this concept. I will read the article. I have a mock turtleneck that I’ve had for 25 years! It still looks beautiful and I wear it a lot during the colder months. It is definitely a safe garment for me.

I love a pair of worn brown boots. They give off an explorer/adventurer vibe that is just so cool. Sort of Indiana Jones I’d say. Also I loved the cable knit sweater you were trying on in the vintage shop. Beautiful-and you looked great in it.
Emotional durability is only something you can have with quality pieces and in my wardrobe if I love the piece enough to pay the price AND love to wear it, it is worth the effort to take extra care to preserve it’s quality. So for me it is most of my wardrobe!
I have an example. I have pair of brown chukka boots that are like my "security blanket" boots. They look great with slim or skinny jeans, a big cozy sweater, a comfy button-down shirt, or even a dress and tights. I've had the same pair for at least 5 years and will replace them with something as close as possible when they are too worn to go on. Also, I LOVE your gray sweater/jumper. I have been looking for one similar for myself!

Hi Signe, since I follow you and some other amazing fellows of yours like Christina and Alyssa for 5 yeears now, I have built a wardrobe I truly love! But there are some items I’m really emotionally attached to like my pair of zara leather ankle boots which I have for more than 6 years and they’re one of my most worn items! They are the most comfortable high heeled boots with the softest buttery leather! I love them so much I recently thrifted another pair on Vinted as a back up in case they ripp😅And my Burberry trench coat I’ve got on vestaire and each time I wear it I feel like a billion dollars 💸 not in an economical way but emotionally! I feel so me and so good wearing it each time! There are some more items I could waffle on and on but I hope everyone gets the point! Thx for all the amazing content ❤🙏

I never understand people that say if you wore a style the first time around then you shouldn't wear it the 2nd time around. But if you love it, it suits you, your body shape and your lifestyle then why not.
I've been through a lot of weight changes so my oldest items are only about 6 years old ( although I have shoes and boots that are 20plus years old - big feet so never part with them, but that's another story!)
I currently have a brown tweed blazer that is very similar to one that I had in the late 80s. I used to wear it with jeans and brown loafers then too. But that's actually one of the things that I love about it. It reminds me of my past self and it's a thread of continuity linking the past to the present.

I love the term emotional durability. I spent a good chunk of my weekend in my closet with my clothes. For the first time ever I think that i successfully created my spring capsule wardrobe. This video is so timely and an eye opener.
The “emotional durability” term is something I’ve never heard before but it’s so important. Right now I’m contemplating this black coat I bought about 3 years ago and is probably the longest item I’ve had in my possession (nothing ever lasts in my closet). But this coat has withstood literal storms, gives me a very regal quality, and is so versatile with the seasons. I can’t believe I’ve even contemplated getting rid of it.

I was always looking for the right word for keeping my father's belt although it is over 40 years old, worn to the thread but stil looking good en wearing it stil feels amazing. The same counts for my grandmother's ring. emotional durability to a t and i will never give them op without a serieus ammount of effort to keep them clean and repaird.
I have been watching your videos since 2016 and can resonate so much with having lost parts of my style by trying to be more minimalist. I love seeing you re-introduce some color into your wardrobe as I am doing the same thing and also embracing more feminine silhouettes that I had previously abandoned for a more "minimal style" that just wasn't me. I definitely have wardrobe items with “emotional durability”. Especially my decades-old super-quality ones like my Dior long wool coat. I bought it new 40 years ago and wore it every cold day of my entire career, it still looks brand-new and it still makes me feel like a princess in it (and toasty warm). I never even considered it for my wardrobe culling. I still very much regret donating a very fine cognac-brown wool blazer with chocolate-brown (genuine) suede trim and covered buttons, I can’t find anything near that quality nowadays. Everything nowadays is at least lined with polyester, which I can’t wear. I was “trying to be practical”, when I retired, a huge mistake! I could have worn it hundreds of times since I parted with it.
Yes I absolutely have items I keep reaching for. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that there are a lot of duplicates in my wardrobe. I started a Pinterest board and noticed how it made me feel saving images of these items. Black polo neck jumpers, grey wool jumpers, long black skirts ( satin, wool, crepe) jeans, white shirts, black boots, long black coats, trench, white shirts, white t shirts….i now know it’s unproductive for me to go ‘off-piste’ with something new. Summer is harder for me but I think it’s ling navy dresses and long black dresses…for me it’s a mixture of emotional comfort but also financial restraint. I can buy a wool polo neck, jeans and a grey wool jumper second hand and in amazing quality to one piece from a fashionable shop that’s a trend piece. I may feel content with my new trend item for a month or two but I now that I will continually reach for the other items for years to come.

I’m getting to a point where I have quite a few things in my wardrobe that I’ve had for a decade or longer that I still love to wear. It does help that I’ve never been overly interested in trends. Your video made me remember one particular pair of jeans I had through my teens. They were a non-trendy pair of straight leg, mid rise jeans in a time when everyone was wearing low rise skinny jeans. I loved those jeans to death. They had a few holes, all with memories attached. I had them repaired a few times, but eventually they started to fall apart. Definitely high emotional durability.
I haven't heard about emotional durability but I can think of some items in my closet that fit this description. One that comes to mind is my black one-piece swimsuit that I've had for about 16 years!

Hei! Such a great topic Signe😀I never heard about this specific term, but I guess we all have our favourites that we cling on to? When I buy replacements I will try to remember what made this piece my favourite, the colour, the texture or maybe it was the overall comfort. And then try to find a new or preloved piece that holds one of these qualities. I do not always get it right, because it demands a bit of thought, you can not just buy something in a rush, at least it does not work for me. So a good wishlist is helpful!

I only wish I could wear jeans! In 50 years of trying, I never found a pair that fits my skinny hips and legs reasonably well. 501s, men’s, are closest, but they still look a bit comical on me, poufy around my narrow hips and skinny thighs.

I remember giving you the hint to recolor a pair of black denim jeans you were going to declutter because the intense black faded. It was quite some years ago. At the time apparently you didnt know about the existance of washing machine dye to recolor an item at home. I see you made good profit of this advice, i am glad 😊

Yes know your colors. For me, army / khaki green and emerald green are better for my particular blonde / super fair coloring. But my neutrals are: ivory, army green, camel and pecan. No black, bright white or gray anywhere in my closet

I totally agree with you regarding a good pair of jeans! However, I made the experience to find a perfect style for me (from Armedangels) and I bought the identic style in three (!) more colours, which, for me was a real mistake! I still love the first one very much, but I didn't enjoy the other colours in the same way, it felt a bit boring having the same style of jeans in 4 different colours, so I ended up selling them. So I learned for me, it's better to have different styles and not buying the same item just in different colours!

I'm pretty tall (1,84 cm) and I never really find jeans that are either long enough or fit. I would love to wear the Armedangels jeans but they don't really fit (they are kind of too stiff for me - I have the feeling that I always need a bit of stretch). do you or any guys of the community have recommendations for me? if you have the same struggle? 🥰
Hi Signe, I love your content and your style! I found this video especially interesting and already read thin supreme article. I realize that ‘emotional durability’ is absolutely what I am looking for and what I always try to find while shopping..and it definitely helped me shopping much less and more mindfully. My problem is that the items I really really love don’t fit me..I love jeans so much but I don’t find one that fits me, that ist comfortable and looks good (tall and rather skinny woman..). Instead, everyone tells me that dresses look great on me but I don’t like dresses! For any advise you can give on this topic I’d be very thankful ;-)

You look so beautiful that sage green coat, and all your Soft colors. I think muted, natural-looking greens like this do work as neutrals, at least I use them that way. This sage is one of my favorites, I’m a dominantly Soft coloring type, too, or Soft Summer by the seasonal method. I often use my GSA rock color chart (Munsell-based), to find nature’s best muted colors for me (plus, I’m a geologist, so I always have one on hand).
Hi, it’s so strange, we follow so many of the same ppl on UA-cam. I love reading the comments and I always see yours and I usually agree with most of your comments. I love fashion too. I feel so happy watching these video and I consider fashion one of my hobbies. I always put effort into dressing and I love the idea of sustainability. I have a collection of items I love, many are very old. Before I retired I knew my style, now it’s taken years to build my style for this chapter of life. Thanks for sharing. ML
Signe, I love how your sweaters drape. Do you size up when purchasing them or are most of them just a looser fit?
Perhaps this is just one of those concepts that doesn't come naturally to me... it's like putting Marie Kondo's method of seeing what "sparks joy" into practice, so if there's anyone out there like me who's more prone to becoming unattached to material things, I'd say take your time when building up this muscle. The things we find joy in may deserve a spot in our self-care routines, but they don't have to make up our entire identity.
I was surprised when you mentioned 'recolouring' your jeans when they fade.
I consider the fading to be part of their charm, only improving as they age.
The only jeans I would even remotely consider redying are my black Levi's.

I have a blouse that’s 34 years old, it’s still beautiful. Can’t believe how long quality lasts.
I own a pair of golden DocMartens sandals I bought about 8 or 9 years ago. I can only wear them on days when I know I don´t have to walk a lot because their straps always give me blisters and they are heavy. Even with that precaution, I can only wear them once every other month during summer (that is how long it takes for the blisters to heal). But I love them - I just can´t let them go. How mad is that?
Wow but I kind of relate! I don’t like compromising too much with comfort but you know, sometimes you do anyway! Wearing heels to a party for example, sneakers will always be more comfy but where’s the fun in that right? 👀❤️ so I think it’s about making small compromises - opting for a lower heel in this case for example. But you must really love those sandals! ❤️

I think “worn” boots and leather jackets make a statement of their own. They are loved, and they were worth it! And I will wear them forever!
