That suggestion about having different necklines in your tops is honestly such a great tip. I feel like when people think of a capsule wardrobe, they think of someone wearing the same exact crew neck tee but purchased 3x in different colors, and then all the outfits just end up accidentally looking the same. On the other hand, you could have 3 white tees but if one's a crew neck, one's a sweetheart neckline, and one's a mockneck/turtleneck, they're all going to have very different vibes and bring something unique to the table.

My goodness, thank you thank you! I've been trying to get the "formula" for this figured out and it seemed to evade me. I appreciated the details of your explanation: get one set, 1 patterned piece, make sure all tops and bottoms are compatible, etc. I took notes on every thing and it's spectacular. It's just enough information without taking up a lot of time. I'm going to go home and evaluate my stuff using your formula and get rid of the excess that is driving me crazy. I think you gave the perfect amount for reliable variety, time to do laundry/repair, and have a system that is very manageable. I can actually do this. I'm sharing it with my mom and daughters. More is not always better, it's exhausting.

I'm currently re-evaluating my closet since my career transition eliminated restrictions on what I can and cannot wear. I want to be intentional about what I keep, toss, donate, and buy to save my wallet. I’m so tired of capsules that are just the same shirt in beige, white and black along with the same jeans in different colours. I’m old so first learned of building a wardrobe by choosing a patterned dress or blouse and skirt, then choosing the other pieces from the colours in the pattern. During the lockdowns I strayed from a capsule I was happy with and am now stuck with a bunch of stuff from online boredom shopping 😜. You’ve inspired me to try to get back on track.

Hi! Yes, if the black + warmer neutrals are not meshing well with your skin tone, I would try the cool colors like navy, denim, shades of blue and gray with cooler toned off-whites and taupes for your lighter options. Hope that helps!!

My problem are locations that require 2 outfits + per day. Like, disneyworld! It’s hot. You’re sweaty. You likely won’t repeat the outfit especially the top. I feel like trips like that don’t work with capsules because you still need double the amount… like hikes, swim days, beach days that get all sandy, theme parks, etc
