If you listen carefully at the end, you hear me tell Jeff, "UA-cam's gonna be pissed," meaning that I expected to get some comments about the lack of audience response. We've sort of grown used to it. Some nights we get more vocal crowds, but this wasn't one of them. Thanks for the comment!
@Scottinrichmond I'm capo'ed on the 4th fret, playing it in G (actually B). The studio version of the original is in C, so you'd capo the 5th fret to play it in C. But U2 never played it live in C, so I feel justified in lowering it a little, too. :) The chords I use are G, C, and F. Three chords and the truth.
I don't have a capo ,lazy of me for not getting one , and I can't reach the high notes at my age , so play it in A , one of my all time favorite songs , it feels like a sad goodbye , those Cellos are so deep , and the last phrase is like a warning for all of us humans , incredible !, you do a great job on vocals , thank you.
This is the song that almost every hard-core U2 fan that I know - including me - lists as one of their best pieces of work. That said, this is the best cover of OTH I’ve ever heard. Brilliant work, mate.
I have been a fan of U2 since I was 13 (am 38 now). I have never once liked a single U2 cover....until today. I stumbled upon this after watching a clip of One Tree Hill from my hometown Auckland. Unbelievable cover, you absolutely nailed it. Stunning.
Nicola Spencer Check out Mike's other U2 covers. Check out all of his covers. He is the best cover artist in the world imo. He actually impersonates the singer but at a muuuch higher level of voice quality. He sounds like a 22 year old Bono. The Radiohead covers are just ridiculous as are the Zeppelin covers.
To the Visigoths in the audience (especially Loud Lady)....kindly appreciate the gift of being able to hear artists at work and be respectful to those who have sense enough to listen!
I couldn't have said that any better myself except to add that these gentlemen are such a welcome breath of fresh air. Oh, and I would have to change the last sentence to read "Proud to call you Oregonians" :)
This song is great. When I was young I use to listen to this cassette every night to escape the bull s**t from my alcholic dad thanks for doing this song. It reminds me of who I am and where I came from.
Omg ... how can such a wonderful version of that be unappreciated? I wanna hunt down the woman gabbing over the start.. well done Mike masse.. that was pure class.. and this coming from a big u2 fan.👍🏽😉
From a massive u2 fan who is a professional musician fro Glasgow, Scotland that was brilliant. I was so dissapointed for you that the audience didn't seem to appreciate how good that was. If I ever find myself in Salt Lake City I'm coming to see you. Superb.
Mike Masse appears in my UA-cam feed periodically. This was the first time One Tree Hill rolled through. It is one of my favorite U2 songs and these guys did amazingly well. I hope people in the audience that night have discovered this video and realize what they were missing that night. This was simply awesome. If I'd lived in Salt Lake City at the time, I'd have been at the Pie Pizzeria every time Mike and Jeff were performing.
without a shadow of a doubt...you two are probably the most underrated musicians in youtube....one tree hill and all the other songs were done beautifully....plz make a band and do originals..i'm dying to listen to them
Everyone is so into their own conversations and drinking at this place they forget a band is playing. Put these guys on a stage in a unplugged setting and everyone would be astounded by their ability of awesome music !!! I would be so happy to pay and watch these guys all night !!!
Hadn't been by for a listen in a few months so thought I would stop by for what I believe is one of your best covers. As I listened to you, I realized how extremely hard this song must be to sing. Hard notes to hit and it has to strain your throat and voice. Of course this is my musically uneducated opinion, but this particular song has your vocal chords getting a major workout. And you nailed it. Lastly, I have to mention Jeff Hall. I love watching him play. Especially in this song. He starts rocking out, closes his eyes and his head gets to rocking out. From my perspective, he looks like he is genuinely loving that moment in time and he is a true joy to watch. Thank you for sharing your talent with us and please know we are grateful and have a great deal of respect for the talent of all the members involved in this band. Making music is your bit in life.
Gentlemen, that was outstanding. The pizza-scarfing public didn't give you the props you deserve. Thanks for posting. A great U2 song beautifully done!
WOW! This song brings tears to my eyes every time....memories of a lost friend. I can't believe the crowd in this place??? Were they deaf? Absolutely amazing cover!! If I was in some random pizza joint and the live entertainment came up with this I would go nuts with applaud. Wish I was there. Thanks for the memory.
Incredible version of my favourite song....Back in 1986 I heard this for the first time (by U2) and it became a personal anthem for me and you boys made it come alive again... x
Hey Mike, thanks for playing this for me last Sat at the Little Bear ( Evergreen, Colo). I never thought I'd ever see you play/sing live.....prayer answered.....
A truly extraordinary cover of a beautiful song I was blessed to see you perform In Liverpool recently Mike and when you play Dublin soon I urge you to play this classic…. The Irish ☘️ will love you and I hope they pack in the venue to enjoy your talent
Wow, this is just the best cover version of this song I have ever heard. I have played this about 10 times now. I can't believe the audience lack of appriciation. Nicely done Mike & Jeff!!
WWWHHHOOOAA!!!! What backwood juke joint did you find this crowd. Goodness! That was ON!!!! Do that crowd a favor and introduce them to CD's, mix in some classic modern music and while ur at it pass out toot brushes for them thar people. I'd pay for that AWESOME rendition of U2.
I for one do not know where you guys have been hiding all these years, but I wish I could come to Utah just to hear you guys live. Please, Please go on tour. You guys are really talented and you all need to believe that.
Seeing Mike in Montreal on Friday September 6th...can't wait! Mike can you please play this for my buddy Rod - he introduced me to you a few years ago and I'm forever in his debt :) I'm bringing him for a belated 50th BDay gift and he regularly tells me that this is a huge favourite! Cheers and see you Friday! :)
I used to live near One tree hill in NZ, oh well it was a hill with one pine tree on top of it til some protester cut it down so it's no tree hill now lol...but awesome cover.
Watched 100 of these videos (some 100 times) and just noticed the 5 string bass. Forgot all about this song at the end of the Joshua Tree. Great album that evokes a time of youthful hope that the world will change and a suspicious fear that it won't.
I don’t think people understand what they’re hearing here. This songs so deep. The dedication. If I was there and didn’t know this was coming it would have stopped me in my tracks.
Great songs and you do them all justice. Sad that talentless people make it on the X-factor and we have top guys like these getting scant applause for far superior musicianship. This guy from across the pond really appreciates you both, you're magic.
I was actually at one of the concerts it was played at. They have only performed it live 40 times. You guys are the only ones that I've heard that does this song justice. Bravo boys! Keep the U2 songs coming.
Another excellent one guys. That audience does not deserve you. If we had a duo flat out nail a U2 track like that at the Grille, the place would go nuts!
-We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill As the day begs the night for mercy... The whole song is a kind of poetic work, poetry springs from every verse, because of that I often say that Bono is a true poet, not only lead singer ...
Good job, guys. This is such a beautiful and moving song, a fitting funeral tribute for a man who must have been a beloved friend to the original artists. As many have said, the crowd's talkativeness and seeming indifference to this song is baffling and disappointing. So often this is the experience of gifted and talented people, to be casting their proverbial pearls before swine. Please don't lose heart for that, the world has always needed good music and art, whether we admit it or not. Kudos to that one applauder in the crowd lol
Each time I hear this song it reminds me of living on the intra-coastal waterway in Wilmington, NC where they filmed the series One Tree Hill. One evening they sat up a barge w/ light because they were using my n'bors house and pool to shoot a scene. Of course the lighting was so bright that I didn't have to use my lights in the cottage. All the actor had to say was "damnit Patton" and I think it took 50 takes! I truly love this song and hope that you play it in the U2 Stream you are planning. Wheeee
I am so with everyone else on the crowd reation at the end of the song. I have listened to this vid at least 20 times and every time I am blown away. At the end I want to go up to the people in the place and grab them and shake them and say what is wrong with you?... lol Mike you do such an AWESOME job on your covers. I really hope you back it to the big time, Your voice is fantastic. Please do some more classic U2. :) (Sunday Bloody Sunday, When Love Comes To town, Two Hearts Beat As One, Bad, etc...)
Whats wrong with the audience in these videos. They must be hearing what we hear. This is so bloody good if I am ever in the US again I will meake every efforty to go and hear you guys play. Congratulations !!!!!!!
Great cover Mike. You and your Buddy have done a great job covering One Tree Hill. I agree with other commentators on your audience applause. What a group of wignuts. I would have been ashamed to be there in that audience and not applauded to your tune. Thanks.
Regarding the lack of audience response in the place, it's understandable some of them don't know these songs and some of them don't care. The important thing is lots, lots more people do care and really do appreciate what you guys do, like me. U guys r awesome I just block out the crowd and listen to ur music.
Mike, the songs you choose to cover have a spiritual quality that touches the soul - even more so because the quality of your productions are so well implemented!
Always happy when one of your videos pops up. Especially when you’re doing an amazing cover of one of my favourites from my youth (I guess I’m old enough to say that now 😮).
I have this in my list of youtube favourites and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Firstly, to watch two masters at work do a great song justice and second how dumb the audience must be to be blind to true talent right in front of them.
This song was a tribute to the manager of U2 who died. He was from New Zealand, one tree hill is a location in Auckland, New Zealand, thanks for honouring the song writer and memory of their manager.
It was in memory of a roadie, Greg Carroll, who worked with U2 in NZ then became a permanent employee and Bono's personal assistant, he was killed in a motorcycle accident (on Bono's bike) in Dublin in 1986
I just wanted to say as a fellow performer; you guys really ROCK!! I love this cover!! I'm completely blown away by the fact that the crowd response was virtually non-existent! WTF!!??
Have watched several of your covers and loved them all, esp. Rocket Man. It's absolutely criminal when people don't applaud, you deserve so much better.
Seriously. I felt so sorry for you there. That is an absolutely fantastic performance of this song at that audience could not even be bothered to clap. About 3 people clapped?!? They need to stop filling themselves with pizza and talking about what's been on tv for a second and just take a moment to applaud you on that superb performance!!!
the acoustic version of this track really lends to how similar in style Joshua Tree and Rattle n Hum really are. you hear the influence of american blues, country, and pop elements come into play all in one song.

What a cover 👏
WTF???
The guys played wonderfully well and almost no one applauded.
This audience knows nothing. You are awesome, very good.
Congratulations !!!
There is a proverb in my country corresponding to this phenomenon:
"you throw pearls before swine"
These guys are awesome.
Awesome version 👏 from New Zealand 🇳🇿 🔥
This is the song that almost every hard-core U2 fan that I know - including me - lists as one of their best pieces of work. That said, this is the best cover of OTH I’ve ever heard. Brilliant work, mate.

Same here
I can't believe people are talking over this. It sent shivers down my spine and shut me up totally the second I heard the first lines.
Yeah I wish that loud bitch would STFU
It must have been deaf and dumb nite at that pizzeria
Absolutely breath taking cover
To the Visigoths in the audience (especially Loud Lady)....kindly appreciate the gift of being able to hear artists at work and be respectful to those who have sense enough to listen!
Congratulations from Ireland 🇮🇪 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
A true gift to be able to entertain like this.
One of the greatest songs in human history.
Outstanding cover!
I'm absolutely floored by Mike's voice... he really could be picked up by someone like blind melon or someone who can take him to the big stage
I couldn't have said that any better myself except to add that these gentlemen are such a welcome breath of fresh air. Oh, and I would have to change the last sentence to read "Proud to call you Oregonians" :)
The thunderous applause at the end appears to be muted due to the age of the video, I’m sure. I will provide one 14 years later. 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
This song is great. When I was young I use to listen to this cassette every night to escape the bull s**t from my alcholic dad thanks for doing this song. It reminds me of who I am and where I came from.

Eight years ago I was not where I should have been. And so I guess I'll just sit here and clap at my monitor. That was outstanding, man.
From a massive u2 fan who is a professional musician fro Glasgow, Scotland that was brilliant. I was so dissapointed for you that the audience didn't seem to appreciate how good that was. If I ever find myself in Salt Lake City I'm coming to see you. Superb.

Y’all killed this!!! Amazing!
Gentlemen, that was outstanding. The pizza-scarfing public didn't give you the props you deserve. Thanks for posting. A great U2 song beautifully done!
I loveU2. And you play and sing so well the song of this band. Continue
That was outstanding! If I was at the bar you would have heard my applause!

Those ignorant people just don't realise they've just heard one of the best covers of the one of the best records ever. You guys are f***kin awesome!!
Hey Mike, thanks for playing this for me last Sat at the Little Bear ( Evergreen, Colo). I never thought I'd ever see you play/sing live.....prayer answered.....

I’ll be taking requests. 👍
Now THAT is awesome🤘
Hey CW, I’m back in Montreal this Saturday, Sept 7th. I hope you can make it! latribu-latulipe.tuxedobillet.com/La20Tulipe/mike-masse
U2 would be proud of the magic that occurred there.
I used to live near One tree hill in NZ, oh well it was a hill with one pine tree on top of it til some protester cut it down so it's no tree hill now lol...but awesome cover.
Can't compliment y'all enough....just great!
Can't believe barely anyone applauded. That was almost better than the original!
I am a U2 nut and this is one of my favourite songs. You guys did an amazing job with it. Well done.
Fantastic version 👌🏻
Bono and the boys would be proud 😊
Watched 100 of these videos (some 100 times) and just noticed the 5 string bass.
Forgot all about this song at the end of the Joshua Tree. Great album that evokes a time of youthful hope that the world will change and a suspicious fear that it won't.
Sadly not , that last verse sounds like a sentence to human kind.
I just can't believe how good this cover is! I can't stop listening!
I don’t think people understand what they’re hearing here. This songs so deep. The dedication. If I was there and didn’t know this was coming it would have stopped me in my tracks.

you guys perfectly captured the emotion of the song.
I want to move to Salt Lake city just to listen to this guy sing every night :)
Unbelievable cover.

very emotional performance of one of the best piece of U2. Congrats

The whole song is a kind of poetic work, poetry springs from every verse, because of that I often say that Bono is a true poet, not only lead singer ...
Well said, indeed he truly is.
lol. You actually got the meaning of that statement at the end. :)
Wow, wow, wow! Been a U2 fan for 30 years. Your covers are tremendous. Thank you...
Good job, guys. This is such a beautiful and moving song, a fitting funeral tribute for a man who must have been a beloved friend to the original artists.

Jeff Hall RULES!
Best song on "TJT". Thanks for covering it!

Just stumbled on this and so glad I did! Spectacular!
Capo 4 with GCF shapes?
Mike, the songs you choose to cover have a spiritual quality that touches the soul - even more so because the quality of your productions are so well implemented!
excellent, from 35 yrs long U2 die hard fan!
Amazing Mike - you hit those high notes to perfection right at the end there. Has to be one of the most emotional endings to a song. Nice one.......
I am sure I have commented on this before but if not, TOTAL RESPECT !!!!
This is amazing.. Best cover of one tree hill ( my fav song of U2) ever heard...
Always happy when one of your videos pops up. Especially when you’re doing an amazing cover of one of my favourites from my youth (I guess I’m old enough to say that now 😮).
Wow tough crowd. That was absolutely beautiful.
This may quite simply be the best cover of any song I have ever heard.
I have this in my list of youtube favourites and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Firstly, to watch two masters at work do a great song justice and second how dumb the audience must be to be blind to true talent right in front of them.
That was so incredibly beautiful done and only 1 person barely claps in the bar. They must be numb or take this local talent for granted.
That is what I am thinking right. This guy has a talent! He should go to one of those talent shows!
Delphine Gemmet He's too damn good for those shows. ^^
yeah you are right...

Have watched several of your covers and loved them all, esp. Rocket Man. It's absolutely criminal when people don't applaud, you deserve so much better.
How in the world did that only garner one person applauding??
This is one of my favorite songs they cover. Pure beauty.
Bravo gentlemen.....Bravo!
could be the best cover on the tube... wait it is. TALENT!
the acoustic version of this track really lends to how similar in style Joshua Tree and Rattle n Hum really are. you hear the influence of american blues, country, and pop elements come into play all in one song.
You guys are SO FREAKIN AWESOME!!!! I listen and watch these vids all night on the weekends when I can't sleep. I have to come see you if I ever get to Utah. Let me know if you ever come to Fort Worth. If you do, I have several places that would love to have you play.
👊👊👊 super performence
You`re brilliant... just brilliant....thank you.
I hope to get a chance to see you live at the pie in july :-)
greetings from switzerland
amazing, singing 1 of the best songs in history like that
Bravi. Ottimo lavoro. 👍
I can only agree to what's been said here. One of my favourite U2 toons, and played so damn great, you really do justice to it... and yeh.. nice applause :-s
I haven't heard a better U2 cover than the ones you guys have done
two guys, two big talents, awesome song = pure pleasure to watch
Love it, love it, love it.
Great.
Dammit guys!! I've just commented on 'Fake plastic trees' telling you that I needed to go to bed, then I came across this video! I was in college when the Joshua Tree was released, and saw U2 twice on that tour (at Wembley and Cardiff). This song brings back so many memories for me, and you absolutely nail it ...btw why do women ALWAYS have to talk when musicians are playing? And as for the response of the crowd, come to my local pizzeria... I'm buying!
AWSOME....Bono would be giddy hearing this
Brilliant cover of a hugely under-used U2 song. subscribed!
ye guys are amazing, serious playlist of covers and ye do all of them justice.
I want to give 6 stars to this performance.
