      @@Straight_White_Fatherly_Figure Use Ditra (orange thing) as an underlayment for concrete or wood subflooring. It prevents the tile from cracking allowing for movement. It's super expensive but worth the cost to do it right. Use a very thin even layer of thinset when applying Ditra to avoid an uneven base due to clumping or air pockets. The black tabs are wedges and spacers which can be bought in different sizes depending on your grout size preference. It also gives you a visual when laying the tiles evenly. Buy enough spacers to make sure you're not having to reuse any from previously set tiles...

    Tile guy here, I’m late to the party but, keeping the tile backs wet with at least a sponge will do wonders for your bonding-especially when laying over plywood, hardybacker, or dura-rock. Helps stop thinset from drying out fast and flashing off. Shouldn’t really need to back butter 👍

    What I recommend: 1. A 100lb flooring roller to set the ditra into the mortar; skim the ditra with mortar and let set up - semi-filling the recesses - which creates a relatively smooth and visually calmer substrate. This also eliminates the need to back-butter most tiles.

    Great explanation of why it's important to think before starting & lay your first tile courses as evenly as possible. Otherwise that bizarre mathematics thing happens 🤔? where being just a fraction off leads to a noticeable wedge area of floor to tile on the far side of the room. Lots of people make this mistake though, rushing to finish. Then blame the awfulness on crooked walls, lol. 😁👉 //

    Just a tip I figured out... instead of back buttering, you can also just take a bucket of cold water, and use a sponge to dampen the back of the tile...all you need is the tile to be damp so it creates adhesion to the floor...you'll use less mortar as well

  • @MichaelJohnson-jt5cu

    I usually find the center of the room and make several measurements and draw several straight intersecting lines on the floor and adjust in each direction as needed for doors and other rooms. Most cut tile edges will end up against the walls where trim will cover over the raw cut edge. A cupped tile is your main concern which can leave an air pocket under a tile making it easy to crack.

  • @verlicht
    @verlicht 4 роки тому +3

    You need to push down the ridges that you build up with your comb. You set the tile 2 inches away from the place it needs to go and push it into place, this collapses the ridges of thinset and gives you a 95%+ coverage on the tiles. This is a lot more important than backbuttering the tiles themselves. Just fyi.

    • @droolbunnyxo9565
      @droolbunnyxo9565 4 роки тому +2

      This makes a lot of sense. I'm probably confused, but I thought the purpose of the ridges is to keep the tile lifted level? If you smoosh the tiles down then you have to take an extra step & use a level to make sure the tiles are set evenly flat. (The first time I installed wall tile, I did it the way you suggest & ended up with a wavy layout. When light reflection hit the wall you could really see how poorly done I did the work. Not my proudest moment :(

The three tile rows that extend under the stove are offset from the ENTIRE rest of the kitchen!! I rarely use those wedge spacers, or schluter for that matter. Only typically use the wedges for marble or very specific jobs. They’re expensive af. Usually just use regular spacers, I’ve gotten really good over the course of 8 years leveling it out by hand or pouring self leveler down. Usually use concrete board of some sort instead of schluter too. Very interesting to watch other tile guys lay tile. There’s only about 5% of us that actually do a good job 👍🏽

If the math adds up so you dont have a sliver piece roll with it. I just think it makes the math eaiser if you start at the door.

    I'll work into a corner as well if that's where I want my nasty cuts to go. I would never work from a wall back to the center line.

      You wouldn't believe how many negative comments I get for working into a corner on some of my tile videos. Thanks for the comment.

    Do you have to put thinset on the back of the tile before laying it? Isn't the thinset on the floor enough?

    I happen to use schluter products often. Follow the thinset recommendations. Luckily I learned from the mistakes of others and not my own but modified thinset just does not properly bond to their products.

      It will bond, it just takes about 2-3 weeks to fully cure. After that, you’re good to grout. 😂
