      I agree with you Antony. However, if the ninjato did exist, & I believe that it did, than I would imagine that the shinobi had specific kenjutsu techniques for that particular sword. I would also think, that shinobi used shuriken more often than samurai did. I know you've been skeptical about their shuriken use, but that weapon seems like a perfect fit for the type of jobs they were involved with. It's a great distraction when making an escape.

    • @ShinobiShaman

      Antony one thing I would think shinobi would focus on, is iron body training. Meaning, hitting various parts of the body against hard objects, in order to harden the body. Jujutsu doesn't seem to be as practical when trying to make an escape as say, one blow that can kill or crack bone. I'm not saying that they didn't train in jujutsu, but a quick devastating iron hand strike, seems a lot more efficient for their line of work. Iron body would also protect them against an improper fall, when jumping from, or falling from a height. I'd like to get your opinion on that, but I don't expect a response.

      @@honorthedead All aspects of Japanese warfare originated with China. The Art of War by Sun Tzu was one of the Samurai's biggest influences. & you're right about Shaolin monks training in iron body. I don't how long that practice has been around, but I suspect it's a really old training method. It's amazing to me, that martial artists of Asia trained their body that way. Everywhere else focused on strengthening muscles, but they strengthened bones too. There's many UA-cam videos of guys breaking bricks & other objects with their hands. If any normal person gets hit with a blow from an individual trained in iron hand, they could be killed instantly. I appreciated your comment.

    Hi Antony, thank you for the video. I would like to say that I believe that there are some skills and techniques that the Shinobi altered for their specific needs and situations that later on would pass on to their children. But the basis of the techniques would be the same as the samurai arts. But I do believe that they would have there own way of learning new techniques. Just like with their experiences with gunpowder and all the various uses they have with it. I don't know just a thought. I appreciate you really diving into history and finding answers about these subjects.

    Hi Antoni, I think this is one of the more positive video you've done. If we break the confines of style and look at the mechanism, and get over the pop culture separation between ninja and samurai. We can study this like most of us have done, and capture the essence of samurai and ninja martial arts. Train in striking and, grappling and swordsmanship, It may not necessarily be that of Japanese cultural landscape and mindset, but it's a start. And you understand the common principles. And you can either adapt of change to your liking. What brings us together is far more important than the things that separates us.

    I know you don't like to speculate, but a video on SPECIFIC ryu/school that were LIKELY used by _some sort of ninja_ during the _Sengoku Period_ would help our imaginations. Especially cool would be talking about any surviving schools from that time. And speak to the notion, if you agree, that techniques from that surviving school probably evolved. If so, then to what degree have they likely changed. Just your opinion and speculation.
    Until we invent time travel, you're our best hope at trying to paint-the-picture of what ninjas did. Thanks ahead.

    I understand what you're saying. Here is one suggestion I might have. Samurai usually wore armor or followed certain rules that as a shinobi no mono they wouldn't. So would it not be fair to say they adapted what they did as samurai to their shinobi work? Use the blade a bit differently? Employed unarmed tactics that had a more covert or underhanded nature to it?

    I agree with the available information that you have brought forward that there’s no “martial art” exclusively used by ninja. I think you, however, brought up a good point that complicates that a bit in that fighting systems at the time were much more localized. I think some of those localized differences might have been significant at least to a degree. I say this by looking at how the same punch is done in many arts today. Sure , they might all be a cross punch, but there are meaningful things to learn from different arts’ approaches to the said technique; at least, that’s been my experience.
    To further your point on the clan specific systems, I think it is important for us to remember how much harder it used to be to get information. Heck, even in my 42 years, it’s become way easier. As a bit of an aside and anecdote, Paul McCartney often tells a story of him and John traveling to a different town to learn the guitar chord B7 (a very easy to find chord today that’s in any chord book or a simple Google search) because they heard that there was one guy there that knew it. If it was that hard to get information that certainly wasn’t a life or death matter even not that long ago, I imagine it would have been even more difficult to get special fighting/killing techniques long ago because their secrecy was a survival necessity. That being said, I think all those techniques either are lost to our knowledge or were incorporated in existing arts and the secrecy removed. Anyone claiming to have secret fighting techniques is usually either delusional, looking to turn a buck, or both.
    Sorry for the long reply, but I found the topic very interesting. Last point: anyone else have a dad, uncle, grandpa, or family friend that taught you a few fighting tricks - maybe just for some school yard scraps- when you were growing up? I did! And this was done in, historically speaking, safe times and places. Imagine what the motivation would have been like to develop some tricks and pass on those techniques at that time within the family.
    So where do I come down on this debate: depending on how we define some of the terms, I’m a firm sort of. 😂

    I recently left a comment on your new Jesse Enkamp video asking "why wasn’t there a ninja martial art?" I was listening to you there and on this video, and it really got me thinking. I was saying Police officers/Law Enforcement use BJJ, but their BJJ is unique. What works for a BJJ competing on a mat while wearing a gi, won’t work for a police officer wrestling w/ a guy on the sidewalk trying to get his gun. So, even though the officer and the competitor are both using BJJ, it’s a very different style, right?
    A BJJ instructor, would have to change and adapt BJJ for the police officer’s job.
    And a BJJ instructor would have to change it again if instead he was training a Military Soldier, right? Because what a police officer has to deal w/ is different than what a soldier has to deal w/.
    Idk, so just more and more it’s getting to me that why wasn’t there any changes or adaptations to the Bujutsu of the Samurai that are specific to the Ninja?
    Or do you just NOT see that as it’s own martial art, then?

    • @AntonyCummins
      @AntonyCummins  Рік тому +1

      They do have small adaptions, and they are listed. But the point of a ninja is if you are caught in an enemy position the chances of survival are almost zero. No matter what you do. Everything they do is escape, no martial arts.

      @TheMindofRobert Рік тому

      @@AntonyCummins I’m wrapping my head around it. Lol But in this video you’re also making the point that "martial arts" isn’t a ancient Japanese way of thinking. So, there is no Samurai martial art either, right? It was all Bujutsu.
      So, really what I was talking about w/ adapting Samurai techniques for the ninja should really be referred to as "Shinobi Bujutsu", right?
      Wrong?

    I *think* someone suggested somewhere (sorry for being vague, I can't recall where I heard that from) that in some scrolls they used "shinobi scrolls" to communicate a technique / skill that was not known to other schools. A secret technique, so-to-speak.
    Something like that might be considered "under-handed" for the time, maybe? Depending upon how people in society viewed Shinobi?
    Something to give them an advantage over other warriors, as any advantage might make the difference to coming home from battle.

    That was super long-winded. And if there were such a thing as "Ninja Martial arts," which you clearly debunk step by step, then there is an element you're forgetting, "Criminal Martial arts." The Shinobi learned from criminals, such as burglars and thieves and thugs, tools and techniques of infiltration, misdirection, and the like. I would say there is a "Ninja Martial art *set* " simply because, there's a lot of overlap between different professions (Soldier, Spy, Tinker, Tailor, and *criminal* ), but then there's *goal-specific* skills that are neccesary. A shinobi probably doesn't doesn't need spear techniques as they are large weapons, unwieldy in tight corridors, and are conspicuous. Likewise, we have a lot of "Self-defense martial arts" classes, who's mindset is geared around "Well, you're just a civilian, and you're assaulted by someone, you need to defend yourself."
    So let me posit this; if you were to train criminals to mug people, or steal, what would that look like? It wouldn't look like a self-defense class, even though the techniques for unarmed combat, or knives, or pistols, would look similar, the *goals* are different; self-defense's goal is the preservation of life. Criminal martial arts is to extract a resource through force. *ninja* martial arts, as the commandos they are, would include land navigation, camouflage, and blending into their environment, depending on the period you're talking and the type of shinobi the mission called for.

    The more I think about it, it would be very unlikely that the Ninja had a Jujutsu that was 100% different than all the other styles of Jujutsu, the same when it comes to sword fighting. HOWEVER, we can see it being very reasonable to see the Ninja modifying standard weapons of the time to better fit their roles. Shorter sword for fighting close quarters, more compact versions of weapons that need to be hidden on the body while in disguise. We see this same logic with Western spies; and at the same time we see being found with too many specialized tools may mark you as a spy if caught, so everyone didn't walk around like James Bond.
