I've linked the correct exam guide in the description. imgur.com/gallery/xIOcIRP
The guide I promised is about 2 weeks away. I', just checking some of the sections over and making sure the links are leading to the right places. Stay tuned.
Sure, waiting.
Looking forward to the guide!
Guide?
Still waiting..
looking forward to the published guide
Great review! It really helped me understand the scope of the exam. I wasn't sure the best approach to studying but searching each topic on the exam guide sounds like a great idea. Cheers!
The most useful Video out there for appearing Tableau Desktop Specialist exam.. Thanks Tim!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Tim , after watching the video i took all your notes in the consideration and i passed the exam
Great job! huge congratulations.
Hey Tim! I passed my exam yesterday with an 861. Thanks so much for your videos and help. Funny thing: I got 2 questions about visual grouping, which I rehearsed because you mentioned it in the video😂👍🏻
Excellent! stuff!
Woo hoo! I successfully passed the Tableau Desktop Specialist exam on 11/08.
Congrats !
@@TableauTim Thanks for your videos that provide great tips on various Tableau functionality.
@sideem hey hi... can you please guide me on how you got trained for this exam?
Thanks so much for this video , I’m planning to take the exam soon this video will help me to be ready, thanks again
is everything ok with you?
have you passed the exam?
So first of all thank you! Today i pass my exam with 889 Points. Thank your for the guide ;)
Nice work! Congrats on your efforts!
Hi Christoph- Congrats! Can you confirm that there are still no hands-on questions on the Exam? My class and I just wanted to make sure they hadn't made any format changes since Tim posted this video.
@@eddiesteenstra4617 Hi thanks! They are still multiplechoise or multipleresponse questions. Often they ask how something works, where exactly you have to click to get something. Where to change a data type, what geocoding is available or what you need for a certain chart type. Partly it was not so easy because you had to think where exactly you find something, but overall it was quite fair I think.
Great video ! 😄
Hey Tim, I have a question
Suppose there are multiple options to choose like say there will be be 3 correct options for the answer
and you only select 2 and will not be knowing the other one
Does those 2 correct answers will be concluded in Scaled Scoring ?
I will be eagerly waiting for your reply Tim :)
Good video to watch before the exam.
Thanks, Tim. This is a comprehensive guide for the Tableau exam and it is helpful for me to prepare for the exam!
Question: Is it required to install an external camera if I have a laptop (single monitor) with an internal webcam installed on it?
No You just need to explain your laptop is the webcam and you will need to be able to carry your laptop to show them the room and take photos if asked
@@TableauTim Liked the video! Hope I can pass the exam in March
Can I use this for fundamentals
unfortunately, skills measured not included in the latest version of Exam Prep Guide
Tim, can you please help with which official prep course from tableau covers the exam pattern
its in the description and the pinned comment on this post. It was updated a couple of weeks ago. The Tableau website is always the best place for this. They just had the wrong guide public when i recorded this video.
Hi Tim. Apart from the topics mentioned in the exam guide, which extra topics do you suggest to study?
I have also covered the LOD expression, uncommon chart type (e.g. Packed Bubble, Pareto).
I passed the Tableau desktop specialist exam on 14/3. Thanks for the guide, Tim.
Great Video. Thanks. I really need help on my exam. I have this exam scheduled on 24th of this month which was scheduled long back in June. The confirmation mail is from Loyalists Exam services . Will the exam be on the new format or old? Can i use internet during the exam ? Thanking you in anticipation
You’ve got time to send certifications@tableau an email as per the instructions if you have questions. If you booked back in June it might be the old system but worth checking with tableau directly.
Hi Tom, thank you for sharing the material.
I want to take the test in online certification using my laptop.
The question is: are you allowed to open your Tableau software?
I have a student license.
It is not allowed to open Tableau according to the latest exam guide.
How long would it take to prepare as the amount of information on the help page is overwhelming. Is all of it needed for the exam?
Tableau recommends that you use Tableau for 3 months at the least but it depends on the individual. I've known people to pass it within 2 weeks from zero start and some have taken many moths so it depends son the time you have to spare and how much experience you have in analytics.
This is what they say on the PDF:
"During the exam, you will have access to
public, online resources aside from private websites that require a login or websites & applications allowing
for communication with others."
So I guess looking up stuff online would be possible.
Youre looking at the old guide. Theres a new guide.
Thanks Tim, did you see all the 45 qns were objectives and no hands on question?
All 45 questions were either multiple choice or question with multiple selection. No hands on.
@@TableauTim I am confused, will the questions be like "what is the % of increase/decrease in sales in 2020" where we get a dataset and pull in dimensions and measure to calculate the answer?
@@scdefk7218 I do cover this in the video. My exam guid was out of date but my exams was up to date. All the questions were multiple choice check the section of the video where I highlight the question style. Also check the updated exam guide in the description of this video it has the pdf which at the end shows you an example of the exam style questions as well so you can be 100% certain what the questions will be like. There is no hands on section or need to use Tableau in the exam
Did Tim ever do that video going over the exam guide?
I did make this guide and I did make the video. For a couple of complex reasons I can't make it public. I will revisit this video and all certification videos soon. Its just not been that simple and straightforward as I thought it would be.
We are at 100+ likes, it would be great if you could make linked resources for "Skills Tested" in the Desktop Specialist exam, so every exam candidates have somewhere to go to prepare for their exam
It only just happened. On the case in between work, being a new dad and life. Will do a video on it very very soon.
@@TableauTim Thank you so much for the video, Tim! Are there any updates on linked resources for the Desktop Specialist Exam?
One more week and the guide will be live. :D
I believe you went through older guide as in new system total no of ques are 45 ( all mcq, no hands on questions) and 750 out of 1000 is passing. Please correct me if I am wrong.
This is the only guide on the tableau website. I do mention that the guide and the exam have different outcomes at 9:30 , please watch the whole video. I'm using the guide form this page www.tableau.com/en-gb/learn/certification/desktop-specialist which as of today when I made th video is the only guide I'm aware of. If a newer guide exists let me know.
Hi Yogesh. That was my understanding as well as far as number of questions. I'm hoping though that even though the proctor has changed, the general type of questions will mostly be the same (aside from the ones where you created the chart first).
They updated the guide today (10/18).

Tim, do you teach any courses?
Not yet ;)
@@TableauTim Wheres the updated guide? "The guide I promised is about 2 weeks away. I', just checking some of the sections over and making sure the links are leading to the right places. Stay tuned."
Hey Tim! Thank you for your video, I just passed the Dekstop Specialist yesterday. Thanks to your advice!
But I need to fit the certification into my LinkedIn Account, do you have any suggestion how to put that? (I really don't have any Idea to put that certification into my LinkedIn, you know credential, confidential information etc.)
Thankyou!
Yeah this is abit weird. I'm also trying to understand how to do this. Tableau just changed the identity system and its not looking like its been linked to credly but once i figure it out will make a video or update your comment. on my to do list for next week. Remind me If i dont reply by just replying to this message.
What resources have u used?
An updated exam guide has now been released: mkt.tableau.com/files/TableauDesktopSpecialist_ExamGuide.pdf
Thats correct! I am now watching this video on Oct 27, 2021 and the tableau site now shows a total of 45 questions with 40 questions scored and 5 unscored!!

Where's Tim's guide?
Very close to getting it done. you can take a sneak peek here. I started doing it on my website and realised that wouldn't work so transferring the content across. timngwena.notion.site/Tableau-Specialist-Exam-Free-learning-resources-by-domain-f87f75a834bd43999d5d722aeaca715d
What is your score?
I got 917 its at the end of the video. I show my score sheet.
Passing score is 750
70% wass the old passing score ont he old exam guide I had when I recorded this video. Please see the pinned comment for th updated exam guide.
@@TableauTim Sorry. Thank you.
@@tarasnavakhatska61 no worries at all. Reading back that sounded flat of me 😅
Is it already $100 per exam xD
Hi Tim! Big thank you for sharing your experience after this exam. Very useful content.
Question - how long have you waited for a certificate? Was the presented document the only "paper" you received or did you get anything more "official and pretty"? I have just sit it myself this evening.
Your video has convinced me to do 2 things: firstly sit this exam and secondly to indiscriminately not prepare for longer than an hour. I have started to regret this approach after reading first question though. They've been surprisingly detailed. Not having Tableau at hand tested rather my photo-memory than actual tool handling. I've scored 889 though (happy with it) :-)
the score is instant if you head to Pearson Vue you should see the score certificate available reasonably fast within and hour or two of sitting the exam but it might be that the xmas holiday and new year is causing delays.
I keep thinking im going crazy but there are actually 2 guides depending don't he web page you get sent to by google. Ive linked the correct exam guide in the description. imgur.com/gallery/xIOcIRP
