I think streaming did stop people from upgrading their DVDs to Blu-ray or 4K because they realized that resolution is not a major difference when it comes to the enjoyment of a film. Us who collect films we tend to buy the best resolution, but normal people just want to watch at the least price possible.
@@megamikethemovieman I think so, I am one of them. I got so tired of there being so many streaming services and the films I want to watch not being on the one I was subscribed to. It is super messy right now not to mention the price increases. So this year I cancelled all my streaming subscriptions and signed up to my library and I can stream movies for free and also downloaded Tubi TV, where I can stream movies for free. And I started to buy the films I love on bluray and DVD. It feels so freeing to just pop the case of a film you want to watch and just watch it whenever you want.

I think 4k is to expensive and doesn't have as many people with a 4k player and 4k TV to get as much content as DVDs and Blu-ray do but I think physical media as a whole will be around for a while. (I personally try and get most content on Blu-ray)
A lot of people don't even pay attention to the quality of what they were watching. The people that still buy DVDs are the people that don't use streaming services. A lot of them are usually old, live somewhere without good internet, or both. Those people usually don't care about getting the highest quality, and just buy whatever is the cheapest.
Short answer I can think of is because DVDs being cheaper enables them to survive with lower physical storage format sales that still turn a profit as opposed to blu-rays, which are more expensive and didn't have as much exposure before video streaming took off. Blu-Rays at best are an incremental upgrade over DVDs, whereas DVDs were a fundamental medium shift from the more expensive and fickle/fragile media format of VHS video cassettes and had seven/eight years of uninterrupted dominance in the home video market before blu-rays and video streaming arrived around the same time in 2006-2007. Blu-Ray/4K discs and players tend to be the most expensive video format option, which when combined with cheap high-definition video streaming cuts into the value Blu-Rays could provide over DVDs.
I'd approach this slightly differently and also introduce another angle which I included in one of my previous posts when we talked about this but got deleted by the YT algo at the time. Whilst your pie chart at 1:25 shows the relative "market shares" of physical media sales it doesn't highlight the most important factor which is the "total size of the pie" is a mere fraction of what it would have been if streaming had not been a thing. Before services like Netflix got going, everyone rented physical media from their local family run video store or big chain Blockbuster...it was part of the culture. In the beginning the physical media was video tape, there was a brief "war" between the Betamax and VHS formats when video stores stocked both but VHS quickly won that war and Betamax got phased out entirely. For years everyone had a VHS player and they rented (and bought) movies on VHS. When DVD came out, the picture quality, features and convenience were a huge leap and it swiftly started replacing VHS in both rentals and sales...DVD became the "standard". Everyone owned a DVD player, everyone knew what a DVD was and everyone rented and bought them. "Economies of scale" meant that DVDs became incredibly cheap to produce and lead to huge profits. This was massive for the movie industry because a movie that didn't do well at the box office would get a 2nd chance on the home rental market and in many cases this lead to an (initially) unprofitable movie becoming very profitable indeed. This had the knock on effect of allowing movie companies to take more risks with their movie productions because they weren't so reliant on the box office receipts. When streaming came in people gradually started renting/buying less and less. Video stores like Blockbusters went out of business, sales in shops went down and movie companies started to feel the pinch and the risk...if a movie didn't do well at the box office then it didn't really get the same "2nd chance" to make money that it did before because of the pricing structure/setup of streaming. It was terrible for the industry overall but the average consumer was oblivious and didn't really care...as long as they could put Netflix on and watch something. If streaming hadn't taken off then Blu-ray would have gradually started to replace DVD as the "standard" (to this day I still find people who don't even know what a Blu-ray is !). Blu-ray/renting/owning would have become part of the culture and the "economies of scale" that came with DVD would have come to Blu-ray. Everyone would still be renting/buying, Blockbusters would still be a thing, the physical sales "pie" would be vastly bigger than it is, the movie industry would be much healthier and able to take more risks with productions that might not do so well at the cinema. Streaming, whilst convenient and sufficient for the average consumer, totally robbed Blu-ray of it's potential (and deserved) glory as well as severely damaging the movie industry as a whole.
I think the main reason why Streaming killed Blu Rays is that streaming quality is pretty dang good and can stand up very easily with modern movies/Blu Rays of today. Aside from a tighter and slightly sharper image, Blu Rays just unfortunately don't give the incentive for people to pay for the format in general. Also another reason Blu Rays got killed is that DVD's can play on both Blu Ray and now 4K Blu Ray systems, which pretty much made getting the more expensive format rather pointless.
Almost every movie I care about has already been released on Blu-ray, so those will be available for as long as I live. Even when they are no longer in production, they will still be easy to find on e.g., eBay. No one makes movies anymore that I care about, and they haven't for a long time, so I'm not even remotely concerned about the prospect of not being able to get recent or future movies on Blu-ray.
@@megamikethemovieman Most of the movies I own are from the 1980s (which is the decade I grew up in); some from the 1990s, and a few from the 1970s and earlier. I probably own less than 10 from the 21st century. No particular genre, but most of them are action, sci-fi, and comedies, plus a handful of horrors and westerns.
@@MaximRecoil Those are some great decades (I love the 80s and 90s too). 70s is definitely a decade I need to dive more into. Any where you recommend to start with the 70s? I feel like I’ve only seen a handful of the big ones like The Godfather and Texas Chainsaw.
@@megamikethemovieman A few of my all-time favorite movies are from the 1970s, but overall I don't care about many pre-1980s movies. My favorites are Rocky (1976), Rocky II (1979), Star Wars (1977), Superman (1978), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Alien (1979), and Dirty Harry (1971). The Godfather (1972), The Exorcist (1973), and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) are good, but not among my all-time favorite movies, so I don't own a copy of any of them.
I reckon over time a lot of people will go back to disc. Last weekend I was with some mates who usely stream & they were complaining about not being able to find a film streaming anywhere when they want to watch it & not being able to find the whole of a franchise in one place.
I think more people will feel that way too. I’ve had way more issues with trying to stream something rather than just plugging in a disc. Are those friends going to start collecting again?
@@megamikethemovieman one of them does still have dvds which he plays through a PS4. I don't know if he will buy more because he would have to order them offline due to our area being no where near an HMV. There isn't anywhere near us that sells discs. As for the other friend, I haven't been to his new place that he got a while back so I'll judge that when I get to his & see the set up.
Also, in the case of movies filmed on nitrate film (e.g. films from the silent era until higher quality film stock became available) these require lots of digital remastering and due to the print issues, a lot of times, a DVD copy vs. Blu-ray copy may not be better quality for the average viewer but higher resolution transfers of these is recommended but as long as the DVDs of these are Criterion, Image Entertainment from the 1990s-2000s, Kino, Eureka in the UK, and other boutique transfers of these, or a major studio disc, these do display very well, even on an HDTV. I have seen the silent Phantom of the Opera on a bargain bin dollar DVD and the print is lousy, the Milestone/Image Entertainment or the Kino DVDs and Blu-rays are superior since these are professional restorations.
@@megamikethemovieman An example of a restoration that really makes a difference even to the average person that is not a silent film is the 1962 western epic How The West Was Won, which was made in Cinerama which is basically 3 panel panoramic film with curved screens (Check out Wikipedia for more details on this process). With the older DVD and LaserDisc, you can easily see the join lines of the 3 panels but with the restoration currently available, the join lines are barely visible. If you see it on TCM or have an early issue of the movie on Blu-Ray, you do get to watch a SmileVision version simulating the curve screens of Cinerama theaters while the standard Blu-Ray and DVD have a flat display. For Andy Griffith Show, only get the DVDs on Paramount as they came from the original sources, cheap episodes with episodes in the public domain mostly substitute the theme and other incidental music with generic sounding music for copyright reasons.
When it comes to gaming systems, they have historically been very influential in the development of technology, especially with the PS1 on forward in that the earlier versions of the consoles had higher quality audio chips for implementing in a hi-fi or top of the line home theater system. When PS1 was first made, the earliest models had one of the best audio chips at the time and have the RCA jacks soldered into the system so that one could use it in a stereo system. The PS3's fat models played SACDs in high resolution audio using a top quality audio chip while the skinnier models removed the high-end audiophile capabilities, etc. Just like Dolby Atmos is mostly used with upper tier equipment today, in the days when SACD/DVD-A were introduced, the best 5.1 implementation used 3 sets of RCA cables as coax and optical audio only can do uncompressed PCM audio or Dolby Digital and DTS compressed 5.1 and 7.1.
DVDs can be 480p if they are film-source (or digital cinema-source, which is also 24 frames per second) and you have a "progressive scan" DVD player (which also requires a TV/monitor that can sync to at least ~31 KHz; pretty much all modern ones can, and well beyond that too). If the source is, e.g., NTSC video, which is natively 29.97 frames per second, interlaced, then the DVD will be strictly 480i. Some sitcoms from the 1970s-1990s were shot on NTSC video rather than film for example, so if you get any of those on DVD they are strictly 480i. Also, if the DVD is film-source but you don't have a progressive scan DVD player or a TV that can sync to ~31 KHz (traditional CRT TVs can only sync to ~15 KHz), it will only display as 480i.
max native resolution of dvds is 480p, upscaling make it looks "acceptable" but it's much worse than native 1080p and way more noticeable with native 2160p (4K)

@@megamikethemovieman Native resolution is the actual resolution of the video file on the disc. For DVDs it is 720 x 480 pixels. For Blu-rays it is 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is 6 times the resolution of DVDs. People sometimes use the word "native" to distinguish it from a display resolution. For example, you can watch a DVD on a 1920 x 1080 monitor, and you will see 2,073,600 pixels, but the video file only has 345,600 pixels because its native resolution is only 720 x 480. So the extra pixels you're seeing are created by the TV based on the native pixels using an algorithm/filters, which is known as "upscaling." On the other hand, if you play a Blu-ray on that same TV, the 2,073,600 pixels you see are all part of the video file because its native resolution is 1920 x 1080; none of them are created by the TV. Native 1920 x 1080 looks a lot better than 720 x 480 upscaled to 1920 x 1080, all else being equal.
There has GOT to be more to this? I never bought another (480p) DVD once Blu-rays were available? Nobody I know of did, either? In my mind it's almost as bad as buying a VHS or music cassette tape - complete waste of money. Lots of blu-rays/4K will just include the DVD. Are those being counted separately as DVD sales? Finally, unless something's changed, only blu-ray or better include those "Ultraviolet" (or whatever it's called now) streaming codes, which is why I almost always buy the blu-ray/4K physical media - best of both worlds.

Dude, I far prefer DVD to both Blu-ray and 4K because on a good Blu-ray player that upscales DVD they're totally fine enough for me, good detail good sharpness good colors it's how I like movies to look.
Blu rays aren't that much more expensive than a DVD, 4Ks are a different matter but those will eventually go down as well once they're not new releases anymore.
A lot of TV shows are still only available on DVD (eg. Seinfeld). I also think studios have been hesitant to release some shows (eg. Star Trek Voyager) if the show is not available in HD. I would snap up a Blu ray of this show if it were available, even if it's just a 10 percent improvement in visual quality and didn't have some of the DVD compression artifacts.

Most shows from before the 90's, if they were shot on film would have been edited on film, in that case it's relatively easy to remaster, you just gotta scan the film and clean it up a bit, of course even that costs money though, and that's assuming the original film elements sill exist, and that it wasn't shot on video, some shows were shot on film and edited on video, in that case you would have to re edit yeh, the sci-fi shows were particularly difficult though because they have a lot of effects that are in SD that would have to be redone, that's something that becomes an issue in the 90's when digital effects started getting used, non sci-fi/fantasy shows obviously don't have this problem as much. And then there are shows that were shot on video, you can't do much with those, they don't tend to look any better on blu-ray compared on dvd.
At the time blu-ray was released, (like 2006) the format was very expensive, also the players, PS3 was one of the best players, but it was a very expensive console too. the Xbox 360 was cheaper, with more games, better performance and a more robust online service, overall it did better than PS3 at least the early years. By the time blu-ray was trying to become the standard format it was still expensive, streaming started with netflix and it was cheaper also available in HD (720p), imo blu-ray never stood a chance againts the rise of streaming/digital these days the vast majority of consumers already moved to streaming, i guess a small group of people with a force of habit keep buying dvds and collectors/enthusiasts will keep buying blu-rays and UHD blu-rays as long those are available
ANSWER 1 Mike. DVDs 📀 will play in laptops and tablets. (2) Remember, in a lot of cases, you get a free digital copy of a film when you buy the DVD 📀. (3) Mike, that would have been a disaster if they had stopped producing DVD. (4) It failed when BEST BUY stopped selling DVD. NO! BLU RAY will NOT overtake DVD. We NEED the convenience of being able to access our films on the go. 4 K was a doomed format from the start.
Do you think the Digital codes are a major selling point for most consumers! I like them myself, just to have a digital backup but I wonder if many collectors disregard them?
@@megamikethemovieman no the only computer I have with on-line connectivity is my phone. So I don't know how those digital downloads look. Anyway I give them to a young woman that streams everything. Heck even the one from The Walking Dead Complete Series Blu-ray that people are selling on-line for $50 I gave it to her.

Mostly physical media along with the occasional Pluto tv and the superbox when it comes to the movies it’s just physical media and more preferably 4ks I gave up streaming services like Disney plus an max for 4k collecting. I’m not saying that I don’t like streaming anymore it’s more like a former co worker got me more into 4ks

Here are some thoughts I had. Format vs Form Factor CD vs DVD vs BR vs 4KBR. These are different formats yes but the form factor has stayed the same. If we think about this from the view of a BR player manufacturer they have an incentive to have their player play all the formats. They know someone buying a player likely has all these formats and don't want to have multiple players nor upgrade their entire collections. Furthermore DVD is cheap. I find myself downloading Linux isos and buying DVDs at Walmart more and more. Upscaling on animated films is amazing. I have viewed some DVDs on a crop 1080p Vizio that have been stunning! Lots of things to consider. DVD is a lot like USB it is around to stay!.
Great thoughts! It is tougher to notice the quality change with animated titles, at least visually. What about sound though for you? Does DVD give you the same sound as the other formats?
@@megamikethemovieman I only have a quality sound system in the bedroom so it is hard for me to judge because I'd say we watch most DVD titles in the living room. However, I have noticed great results as long as a 5.1 mix is there.

Also another deal that attracts collectors is the fact that there are times when a movie is only on DVD in its original aspect ratio on DVDs from outside the US and the cheap bottom of the barrel line DVD players have secret menus that allow people to change regions easily to play DVDs that are region coded for overseas although there was a time when component DVD players could play all region PAL DVDs but combo decks couldn't play all region PAL discs but in the case of Blu-ray and 4K players sold in the US, you have to buy a modified player to play Blu-ray discs from outside the US. Most UHD 4K discs do not have region coding although there are a few that are region coded. US sold Blu-ray players can't play all region PAL DVDs unless they are modified. Examples of a movie you have to either get on old LaserDisc, Region 2 or 4 PAL DVD or Blu-ray are the 2 Grumpy Old Men movies, many children's movies such as the 1982 Annie musical, etc. There are US issued DVDs of the original American Tail movies that are 4:3 and others that use the widescreen prints and the Blu-ray issues are all widescreen.
I wouldn't be surprised if the cause is when the first wave of consumers would've began buying Bluray, the Great Recession hit, and so most held off. Then when things started recovering in the early 2010s, Digital Download & Streaming stated gaining steam. So most upgraded to that instead of Bluray. 4K UHD is a niche interest for hobbists, and DVD is fine for people who just want to watch something, have bad internet, can't afford subscriptions, or are just plain stubbon. So Bluray gets squeezed out.

good video. I thought Blu-ray came out before alot of people really started to get on Streaming. Didn't it? It really did surprise me that Blu-rays never became the main format. I could never (and still don't) understand why someone would go and spend money on a HD TV... but not get a Blu-ray player eventually. They wanted the better HD picture enough to buy a new TV.. but not a Blu-ray player. Eventually Blu-ray players became quite cheap. I dunno......
Not sure of the exact release date, but possibly Blu-ray could have come 1st. But I don’t think it was ever marketed well enough which never gained it popularity. Why don’t you think Blu-ray’s gained popularity? Why the HD TVs as you mentioned over the HD discs? Were people just so use to DVDs and didn’t want to switch at that point?

@@megamikethemovieman At one time, I thought streaming was a good idea. I started buying movies digitally because I found it convenient and saw it as a way to save space. However, I came to find out that I don’t actually have any rights when it comes to my digital purchases. Digital purchases can be taken away from you at any time, for any reason. That’s why I started buying DVDs again, and on occasion, I will buy a Blu-ray. I don’t really see any reason to invest in 4K at this point. DVD and standard Blu-ray are good enough for me. I believe that streaming will ultimately kill off the physical media market in the end. I think people still buy DVDs and Blu-ray because they either live in more rural areas without high-speed internet or they just want a physical copy of their favorite movie. Streaming services are also expensive, so some people might just want an inexpensive way to enjoy their favorite movies.

@@megamikethemovieman I haven’t personally seen anything being taken away, but I have heard reports of movies and TV shows either being changed or taken down. One incident that happened recently involved Sony allowing licensing agreements for Discovery content on the PlayStation Store to expire. I believe Sony reversed course on that decision and renewed their agreement. However, the potential for such occurrences still exists, and I would rather have a physical copy in my hand.

Interesting points loved reading the comments Been a avid movie collector since the beta max days to vhs to dvd to blu ray.Laser Disc was awesome but never took off anyhow I still buy movies now but don’t own a 4K player or 4K telly maybe one day never say never lol.I try to just buy blu ray but due to pricing and some of the bedonnker prices of some films you may be after on blu ray oh there out of print then I would have to settle for the dvd.I’m not talking about the blu ray being like $10 more or something I’m talking about being $100 or so more that you have to import and don’t get started on the postage errr.I’m not going to pay a couple of hundred for the blu ray when you can get the DVDs for like $40 .I’m not denying that the films would look awesome in the 4K and I understand you would want the best quality but I remember a lot of horror witch I loved I saw on vhs and a hell of a lot of bootlegs because that was all that was available so when dvd came along it was like where have you been all my life lol.Then I slowly started just to upgrade my favourite movies to blu ray because I was not upgrading all 5000+ DVDs i owed and definitely not to 4 k anyhow.I wish I still had all my vhs still owed a small store in my garage back in the day I was like a kid in a candy store😜.And considering the price those horror ones are going for eBay now dam!!!😂

DVD has been painfully outdated for more than 10 years. It makes no sense to put anything current on them, they can’t even match the quality of this video. Just shows how clueless people are if DVDs still outsell Blu-ray.

I buy nothing but Blu-ray now I got probably well over 160 Blu-rays I recently bought all the John Wick movies in Blu-ray :D best part of it is my TV upscales 1080p to 4k so to me that's a win win
dude i still buy blurays almost every week. streaming crap didn't kill bluray. streaming content; you cant have the movies or shows forever. they get deleted. thats what i think. on the other hand you can pop in your blurays anytime you want i don't know about ; dvd not being affected. i still see that big pile of dvds at Walmart that no one buys lol

@@megamikethemovieman not for awhile. Streaming has to add 3/4 more of data space. I think we’re years away from that. Plus companies would charge an arm and a leg for that service. 4K on Netflix is already 20 bucks. You would have to to charge 80 to 100 bucks for each streaming service.

@@megamikethemovieman There are inexpensive Blu-Ray players and most people buy these or upconverting to HDMI DVD players to avoid having to buy separate converters that convert composite or component video to HDMI.
@@megamikethemovieman Actually I never watched HD DVDs growing up, just regular DVD . Just wish HD DVD was the cheapest physical media option available as the higher resolution is better for modern large TVs . I would take Bluray over HD DVD .
I think blu-ray will overtake dvd's. I think the people who are buying dvd's are old, young people who buy physical media buy blu-ray's. As the older generation start dying off, the market for physical media targeted towards the casual consumer will die out with them and physical media will became a collectors/enthusiasts only market where blu-ray will dominate. Streaming will still be king but dvd will die out.
@@megamikethemovieman No. 1. The difference is far less noticeable compared to going from dvd to blu-ray and you really need top notch hardware to get the most out of it. 2. Right now you can't play 4K discs on PC, that is something that could change though, so maby in the far flung future when everyone can afford high quality 4K HDR displays/TV's and every PC can play any disk, but at that point streaming has probably cought up with disks anyway.
Bro the people who watch horror movies on streaming were never collectors they're average moviegoers who rarely bought any movie if any. A young woman I know that's a horror fan streams everything and owns nothing not even Blu-rays. I don't know what's your thing with HD it's like you're suffering because Blu-rays are not selling more lol!🤣 They stopped manufacturing VHS because it wasn't a disc and analog signal. A big part of DVDs takeover was the PS2 not only you got a gaming console but a DVD player as well and it's the most sold console in history. What about the PS3 being a Blu-ray player and PS4 being a 4K player, why didn’t those consoles help their formats take off more? And the person that stream everything, what did they use to do when streaming didn’t exist?
@@megamikethemovieman the PS3 didn't sell as well as the PS2. Don't get me wrong it sold well but not as good. I remember at the beginning of Blu-rays stores didn't have as many horror titles for sale. I bought a Sony Blu-ray player I think in 2011 and only a handful of movies because more were not available whereas DVD had a ton. The young woman I know watched cable tv in her home with her parents and they had a small VHS and DVD collection. But she's not interested on buying anything even though she knows when you stream you don't own anything.🤔

DVDS dominate because their the cheapest. They almost always have more dvds than Blu-ray and 4k in stores. Because they know dvds will sell more. I prefer bluray over dvd if the price is right. But they usually have some bluray a little bit of 4k and a lot of dvds in stores. Yeah, I'm surprised that they haven't stopped making dvds. I'm glad that they haven't, but I'm surprised. Long live physical media streaming won't last. Physical media was here first, and it's not going anywhere.

blu rays just fucking suck, i use my pc to watch movies and not a dedicated player so keep that in mind, with a dvd I can buy a 20 dollars external usb dvd player and just use it no issues, blu rays for an external usb player is usually around 100 dollars unless you get lucky and find a used one and then you need to deal with the pain in the ass that is the set up process just to do what a dvd does when you plug it in, im using a linux computer so figuring out how to do this simple thing was annoying and once i did figure it out i dont even get the proper experience because blu ray menus dont work on linux a lot of the time unlike dvd dvd had the benefit of being easy to crack so it had much better comparability, if they just let people do what they want with blu rays people will buy more blu rays otherwise there wouldn't be a reason to buy dvds anymore outside of price

Yes streaming did hurt the bluray format. Before Bluray could win the format war between DVDs & Blurays. And between streaming & the studios & small labels. Not backing the bluray format 100 % percent like they did with the DvD format. All I am saying is if the studios & small labels would have at least backed the bluray format at least 80% percent. Instead of the 45 to 55% percent that the studios & small labels are doing now. Bc bluray would have taken over the format by now. I am not saying DVDs would have been gone by now. But bluray would have been the Custer mere pick over DVDs by now. And also what hurt the bluray format too. Is that there is still not enough catalog titles available on the bluray format still after 15 year on the market.

Streaming is much easier and less painful than picking a disc to watch in a family environment, especially when your spouse has different tastes. Before streaming, Blu Ray became the preferred choice for enthusiasts, while dvds were relegated to low income families often in the jammy hands of toddlers. Dvds sell to a different market. I might purchase a 4K player if one of my Bluray players dies, but there's little incentive with streaming and UA-cam available for old shows and movies, and from what I've been reading there's a fall in the quality due to the process used.
But do you feel we’re missing something either having the family gathered around one movie to share that communal experience? Everyone is just watching their own thing on their phone now.
@megamikethemovieman well it's just me and my wife. As someone who recently reached retirement age and has opted for phased retirement, we can have quality time at the cinema when it's quiet. At home, we tend to binge watch kdramas or the latest hot thing on Netflix or Amazon, and there's enough there to keep us happy. The blurays tend to stay on the shelf, and most of those titles are on Disney, plus anyway. The only bluray that we've played recently was Elf when Amazon wanted to charge for it at Xmas. It's not easy finding something we both like and have to compromise, but talking the guys at work, i found out that we all have a backlog of things that the wife got bored with.

@megamikethemovieman Anything Woke gets automatically dismissed. I watched the last three Marvel movies on Disney plus on fast forward because they were so bad. The hit of the year so far was Godzilla minus one. It was so good h didn't bother with the Lionsgate version. My wife loves Tom Hardy and Jason Mamoa, so they're easy picks, but she wouldn't watch Dune2. We did see the last three DC movies, and we've just watched Planet of the Apes. It's doing a good job in carrying the story forward. I'm enough of a geek to know the background to most upcoming movies and rely on weekend reviews. I've got Deadpool, Minions, and War of the Rohirrin to look forward to, and that last one is a definite buy.

I think streaming did stop people from upgrading their DVDs to Blu-ray or 4K because they realized that resolution is not a major difference when it comes to the enjoyment of a film. Us who collect films we tend to buy the best resolution, but normal people just want to watch at the least price possible.
I wonder if that will change when streaming becomes more expensive. Do you think more people will go back to collecting?
@@megamikethemovieman I think so, I am one of them. I got so tired of there being so many streaming services and the films I want to watch not being on the one I was subscribed to. It is super messy right now not to mention the price increases. So this year I cancelled all my streaming subscriptions and signed up to my library and I can stream movies for free and also downloaded Tubi TV, where I can stream movies for free. And I started to buy the films I love on bluray and DVD. It feels so freeing to just pop the case of a film you want to watch and just watch it whenever you want.

I think 4k is to expensive and doesn't have as many people with a 4k player and 4k TV to get as much content as DVDs and Blu-ray do but I think physical media as a whole will be around for a while. A lot of people don't even pay attention to the quality of what they were watching. The people that still buy DVDs are the people that don't use streaming services. A lot of them are usually old, live somewhere without good internet, or both. Those people usually don't care about getting the highest quality, and just buy whatever is the cheapest.

Short answer I can think of is because DVDs being cheaper enables them to survive with lower physical storage format sales that still turn a profit as opposed to blu-rays, which are more expensive and didn't have as much exposure before video streaming took off.
Blu-Rays at best are an incremental upgrade over DVDs, whereas DVDs were a fundamental medium shift from the more expensive and fickle/fragile media format of VHS video cassettes and had seven/eight years of uninterrupted dominance in the home video market before blu-rays and video streaming arrived around the same time in 2006-2007.
Blu-Ray/4K discs and players tend to be the most expensive video format option, which when combined with cheap high-definition video streaming cuts into the value Blu-Rays could provide over DVDs.
So do you think if the medium changed to something besides a disc, it would have taken off? Or would streaming have doomed anything else too?
Don't forget LaserDisc, DVD took over as the better format then.
I'd approach this slightly differently and also introduce another angle which I included in one of my previous posts when we talked about this but got deleted by the YT algo at the time. Whilst your pie chart at 1:25 shows the relative "market shares" of physical media sales it doesn't highlight the most important factor which is the "total size of the pie" is a mere fraction of what it would have been if streaming had not been a thing.
Before services like Netflix got going, everyone rented physical media from their local family run video store or big chain Blockbuster...it was part of the culture. In the beginning the physical media was video tape, there was a brief "war" between the Betamax and VHS formats when video stores stocked both but VHS quickly won that war and Betamax got phased out entirely. For years everyone had a VHS player and they rented (and bought) movies on VHS. When DVD came out, the picture quality, features and convenience were a huge leap and it swiftly started replacing VHS in both rentals and sales...DVD became the "standard". Everyone owned a DVD player, everyone knew what a DVD was and everyone rented and bought them. "Economies of scale" meant that DVDs became incredibly cheap to produce and lead to huge profits. This was massive for the movie industry because a movie that didn't do well at the box office would get a 2nd chance on the home rental market and in many cases this lead to an (initially) unprofitable movie becoming very profitable indeed. This had the knock on effect of allowing movie companies to take more risks with their movie productions because they weren't so reliant on the box office receipts. When streaming came in people gradually started renting/buying less and less. Video stores like Blockbusters went out of business, sales in shops went down and movie companies started to feel the pinch and the risk...if a movie didn't do well at the box office then it didn't really get the same "2nd chance" to make money that it did before because of the pricing structure/setup of streaming. It was terrible for the industry overall but the average consumer was oblivious and didn't really care...as long as they could put Netflix on and watch something.
If streaming hadn't taken off then Blu-ray would have gradually started to replace DVD as the "standard" (to this day I still find people who don't even know what a Blu-ray is !). Blu-ray/renting/owning would have become part of the culture and the "economies of scale" that came with DVD would have come to Blu-ray. Everyone would still be renting/buying, Blockbusters would still be a thing, the physical sales "pie" would be vastly bigger than it is, the movie industry would be much healthier and able to take more risks with productions that might not do so well at the cinema.
Streaming, whilst convenient and sufficient for the average consumer, totally robbed Blu-ray of it's potential (and deserved) glory as well as severely damaging the movie industry as a whole.
I think the main reason why Streaming killed Blu Rays is that streaming quality is pretty dang good and can stand up very easily with modern movies/Blu Rays of today. Aside from a tighter and slightly sharper image, Blu Rays just unfortunately don't give the incentive for people to pay for the format in general. Also another reason Blu Rays got killed is that DVD's can play on both Blu Ray and now 4K Blu Ray systems, which pretty much made getting the more expensive format rather pointless.

Almost every movie I care about has already been released on Blu-ray, so those will be available for as long as I live. Even when they are no longer in production, they will still be easy to find on e.g., eBay. No one makes movies anymore that I care about, and they haven't for a long time, so I'm not even remotely concerned about the prospect of not being able to get recent or future movies on Blu-ray.
Makes sense. What decades and genres do you mostly collect for?
@@megamikethemovieman Most of the movies I own are from the 1980s (which is the decade I grew up in); some from the 1990s, and a few from the 1970s and earlier. I probably own less than 10 from the 21st century.
No particular genre, but most of them are action, sci-fi, and comedies, plus a handful of horrors and westerns.

@@megamikethemovieman A few of my all-time favorite movies are from the 1970s, but overall I don't care about many pre-1980s movies. My favorites are Rocky (1976), Rocky II (1979), Star Wars (1977), Superman (1978), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Alien (1979), and Dirty Harry (1971).
The Godfather (1972), The Exorcist (1973), and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) are good, but not among my all-time favorite movies, so I don't own a copy of any of them.
I reckon over time a lot of people will go back to disc. Last weekend I was with some mates who usely stream & they were complaining about not being able to find a film streaming anywhere when they want to watch it & not being able to find the whole of a franchise in one place.

@@megamikethemovieman one of them does still have dvds which he plays through a PS4. I don't know if he will buy more because he would have to order them offline due to our area being no where near an HMV. There isn't anywhere near us that sells discs. As for the other friend, I haven't been to his new place that he got a while back so I'll judge that when I get to his & see the set up.
Also, in the case of movies filmed on nitrate film (e.g. films from the silent era until higher quality film stock became available) these require lots of digital remastering and due to the print issues, a lot of times, a DVD copy vs. Blu-ray copy may not be better quality for the average viewer but higher resolution transfers of these is recommended but as long as the DVDs of these are Criterion, Image Entertainment from the 1990s-2000s, Kino, Eureka in the UK, and other boutique transfers of these, or a major studio disc, these do display very well, even on an HDTV. I have seen the silent Phantom of the Opera on a bargain bin dollar DVD and the print is lousy, the Milestone/Image Entertainment or the Kino DVDs and Blu-rays are superior since these are professional restorations.
Restoration quality is definitely a major draw to collectors but do the majority of consumers realize the difference?
@@megamikethemovieman An example of a restoration that really makes a difference even to the average person that is not a silent film is the 1962 western epic How The West Was Won, which was made in Cinerama which is basically 3 panel panoramic film with curved screens (Check out Wikipedia for more details on this process). With the older DVD and LaserDisc, you can easily see the join lines of the 3 panels but with the restoration currently available, the join lines are barely visible. If you see it on TCM or have an early issue of the movie on Blu-Ray, you do get to watch a SmileVision version simulating the curve screens of Cinerama theaters while the standard Blu-Ray and DVD have a flat display. For Andy Griffith Show, only get the DVDs on Paramount as they came from the original sources, cheap episodes with episodes in the public domain mostly substitute the theme and other incidental music with generic sounding music for copyright reasons.
Actually once people notice the cheap DVD of the public domain stuff vs. the restored version, people notice the difference.
Many people who are silent film collectors are quality oriented so they do seek out boutique label and major studio discs if possible.
When it comes to gaming systems, they have historically been very influential in the development of technology, especially with the PS1 on forward in that the earlier versions of the consoles had higher quality audio chips for implementing in a hi-fi or top of the line home theater system. When PS1 was first made, the earliest models had one of the best audio chips at the time and have the RCA jacks soldered into the system so that one could use it in a stereo system. The PS3's fat models played SACDs in high resolution audio using a top quality audio chip while the skinnier models removed the high-end audiophile capabilities, etc. Just like Dolby Atmos is mostly used with upper tier equipment today, in the days when SACD/DVD-A were introduced, the best 5.1 implementation used 3 sets of RCA cables as coax and optical audio only can do uncompressed PCM audio or Dolby Digital and DTS compressed 5.1 and 7.1.
Are DvD's 480P now or are they 480i . My Panasonic 820 makes my dvd's look good ?
Great question, not a 100% sure. For some reason I always thought I heard 480P. What’s the difference between 480P and 480i?
DVDs can be 480p if they are film-source (or digital cinema-source, which is also 24 frames per second) and you have a "progressive scan" DVD player (which also requires a TV/monitor that can sync to at least ~31 KHz; pretty much all modern ones can, and well beyond that too).
If the source is, e.g., NTSC video, which is natively 29.97 frames per second, interlaced, then the DVD will be strictly 480i. Some sitcoms from the 1970s-1990s were shot on NTSC video rather than film for example, so if you get any of those on DVD they are strictly 480i.
Also, if the DVD is film-source but you don't have a progressive scan DVD player or a TV that can sync to ~31 KHz (traditional CRT TVs can only sync to ~15 KHz), it will only display as 480i.
max native resolution of dvds is 480p, upscaling make it looks "acceptable" but it's much worse than native 1080p and way more noticeable with native 2160p (4K)

@@megamikethemovieman Native resolution is the actual resolution of the video file on the disc. For DVDs it is 720 x 480 pixels. For Blu-rays it is 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is 6 times the resolution of DVDs. People sometimes use the word "native" to distinguish it from a display resolution.
For example, you can watch a DVD on a 1920 x 1080 monitor, and you will see 2,073,600 pixels, but the video file only has 345,600 pixels because its native resolution is only 720 x 480. So the extra pixels you're seeing are created by the TV based on the native pixels using an algorithm/filters, which is known as "upscaling."
On the other hand, if you play a Blu-ray on that same TV, the 2,073,600 pixels you see are all part of the video file because its native resolution is 1920 x 1080; none of them are created by the TV. Native 1920 x 1080 looks a lot better than 720 x 480 upscaled to 1920 x 1080, all else being equal.
There has GOT to be more to this? I never bought another (480p) DVD once Blu-rays were available? Nobody I know of did, either? In my mind it's almost as bad as buying a VHS or music cassette tape - complete waste of money. Lots of blu-rays/4K will just include the DVD. Are those being counted separately as DVD sales? Finally, unless something's changed, only blu-ray or better include those "Ultraviolet" (or whatever it's called now) streaming codes, which is why I almost always buy the blu-ray/4K physical media - best of both worlds.

Dude, I far prefer DVD to both Blu-ray and 4K because on a good Blu-ray player that upscales DVD they're totally fine enough for me, good detail good sharpness good colors it's how I like movies to look.
Piracy is killing disc sales. All the movies released in HD can be found for free online.
How do they prevent people from doing that though? Would stopping releases from going straight to streaming quickly help with that?

Blu rays aren't that much more expensive than a DVD, 4Ks are a different matter but those will eventually go down as well once they're not new releases anymore.
A lot of TV shows are still only available on DVD (eg. Seinfeld). I also think studios have been hesitant to release some shows (eg. Star Trek Voyager) if the show is not available in HD. I would snap up a Blu ray of this show if it were available, even if it's just a 10 percent improvement in visual quality and didn't have some of the DVD compression artifacts.

Most shows from before the 90's, if they were shot on film would have been edited on film, in that case it's relatively easy to remaster, you just gotta scan the film and clean it up a bit, of course even that costs money though, and that's assuming the original film elements sill exist, and that it wasn't shot on video, some shows were shot on film and edited on video, in that case you would have to re edit yeh, the sci-fi shows were particularly difficult though because they have a lot of effects that are in SD that would have to be redone, that's something that becomes an issue in the 90's when digital effects started getting used, non sci-fi/fantasy shows obviously don't have this problem as much. And then there are shows that were shot on video, you can't do much with those, they don't tend to look any better on blu-ray compared on dvd.
At the time blu-ray was released, (like 2006) the format was very expensive, also the players, PS3 was one of the best players, but it was a very expensive console too.
the Xbox 360 was cheaper, with more games, better performance and a more robust online service, overall it did better than PS3 at least the early years.
By the time blu-ray was trying to become the standard format it was still expensive, streaming started with netflix and it was cheaper also available in HD (720p), imo blu-ray never stood a chance againts the rise of streaming/digital
these days the vast majority of consumers already moved to streaming, i guess a small group of people with a force of habit keep buying dvds
and collectors/enthusiasts will keep buying blu-rays and UHD blu-rays as long those are available

ANSWER 1 Mike. DVDs 📀 will play in laptops and tablets. (2) Remember, in a lot of cases, you get a free digital copy of a film when you buy the DVD 📀. (3) Mike, that would have been a disaster if they had stopped producing DVD. (4) It failed when BEST BUY stopped selling DVD. NO! BLU RAY will NOT overtake DVD. We NEED the convenience of being able to access our films on the go. 4 K was a doomed format from the start.

Here are some thoughts I had.
Format vs Form Factor
CD vs DVD vs BR vs 4KBR. These are different formats yes but the form factor has stayed the same. If we think about this from the view of a BR player manufacturer they have an incentive to have their player play all the formats. They know someone buying a player likely has all these formats and don't want to have multiple players nor upgrade their entire collections.
Furthermore DVD is cheap. I find myself downloading Linux isos and buying DVDs at Walmart more and more.
Upscaling on animated films is amazing. I have viewed some DVDs on a crop 1080p Vizio that have been stunning!
Lots of things to consider. DVD is a lot like USB it is around to stay!.
Great thoughts! It is tougher to notice the quality change with animated titles, at least visually. What about sound though for you? Does DVD give you the same sound as the other formats?
@@megamikethemovieman I only have a quality sound system in the bedroom so it is hard for me to judge because I'd say we watch most DVD titles in the living room. However, I have noticed great results as long as a 5.1 mix is there.

Also another deal that attracts collectors is the fact that there are times when a movie is only on DVD in its original aspect ratio on DVDs from outside the US and the cheap bottom of the barrel line DVD players have secret menus that allow people to change regions easily to play DVDs that are region coded for overseas although there was a time when component DVD players could play all region PAL DVDs but combo decks couldn't play all region PAL discs but in the case of Blu-ray and 4K players sold in the US, you have to buy a modified player to play Blu-ray discs from outside the US. Most UHD 4K discs do not have region coding although there are a few that are region coded. US sold Blu-ray players can't play all region PAL DVDs unless they are modified. Examples of a movie you have to either get on old LaserDisc, Region 2 or 4 PAL DVD or Blu-ray are the 2 Grumpy Old Men movies, many children's movies such as the 1982 Annie musical, etc. There are US issued DVDs of the original American Tail movies that are 4:3 and others that use the widescreen prints and the Blu-ray issues are all widescreen.
Blu-ray and 4K are always original aspect ratio.
I wouldn't be surprised if the cause is when the first wave of consumers would've began buying Bluray, the Great Recession hit, and so most held off. Then when things started recovering in the early 2010s, Digital Download & Streaming stated gaining steam. So most upgraded to that instead of Bluray. 4K UHD is a niche interest for hobbists, and DVD is fine for people who just want to watch something, have bad internet, can't afford subscriptions, or are just plain stubbon. So Bluray gets squeezed out.

good video. I thought Blu-ray came out before alot of people really started to get on Streaming. Didn't it? It really did surprise me that Blu-rays never became the main format. I could never (and still don't) understand why someone would go and spend money on a HD TV... but not get a Blu-ray player eventually. They wanted the better HD picture enough to buy a new TV.. but not a Blu-ray player. Eventually Blu-ray players became quite cheap. I dunno......
Not sure of the exact release date, but possibly Blu-ray could have come 1st. But I don’t think it was ever marketed well enough which never gained it popularity. Why don’t you think Blu-ray’s gained popularity? Why the HD TVs as you mentioned over the HD discs? Were people just so use to DVDs and didn’t want to switch at that point?

@@megamikethemovieman At one time, I thought streaming was a good idea. I started buying movies digitally because I found it convenient and saw it as a way to save space. However, I came to find out that I don’t actually have any rights when it comes to my digital purchases. Digital purchases can be taken away from you at any time, for any reason. That’s why I started buying DVDs again, and on occasion, I will buy a Blu-ray. I don’t really see any reason to invest in 4K at this point. DVD and standard Blu-ray are good enough for me. I believe that streaming will ultimately kill off the physical media market in the end. I think people still buy DVDs and Blu-ray because they either live in more rural areas without high-speed internet or they just want a physical copy of their favorite movie. Streaming services are also expensive, so some people might just want an inexpensive way to enjoy their favorite movies.

@@megamikethemovieman I haven’t personally seen anything being taken away, but I have heard reports of movies and TV shows either being changed or taken down. One incident that happened recently involved Sony allowing licensing agreements for Discovery content on the PlayStation Store to expire. I believe Sony reversed course on that decision and renewed their agreement. However, the potential for such occurrences still exists, and I would rather have a physical copy in my hand.

Been a avid movie collector since the beta max days to vhs to dvd to blu ray.Laser Disc was awesome but never took off anyhow I still buy movies now but don’t own a 4K player or 4K telly maybe one day never say never lol.I try to just buy blu ray but due to pricing and some of the bedonnker prices of some films you may be after on blu ray oh there out of print then I would have to settle for the dvd.I’m not talking about the blu ray being like $10 more or something I’m talking about being $100 or so more that you have to import and don’t get started on the postage errr.I’m not going to pay a couple of hundred for the blu ray when you can get the DVDs for like $40 .I’m not denying that the films would look awesome in the 4K and I understand you would want the best quality but I remember a lot of horror witch I loved I saw on vhs and a hell of a lot of bootlegs because that was all that was available so when dvd came along it was like where have you been all my life lol.Then I slowly started just to upgrade my favourite movies to blu ray because I was not upgrading all 5000+ DVDs i owed and definitely not to 4 k anyhow.I wish I still had all my vhs still owed a small store in my garage back in the day I was like a kid in a candy store😜.And considering the price those horror ones are going for eBay now dam!!!😂

DVD has been painfully outdated for more than 10 years. It makes no sense to put anything current on them, they can’t even match the quality of this video. Just shows how clueless people are if DVDs still outsell Blu-ray.
Why do you think the studios still decide to release mostly everything on DVD?

I buy nothing but Blu-ray now I got probably well over 160 Blu-rays I recently bought all the John Wick movies in Blu-ray :D best part of it is my TV upscales 1080p to 4k so to me that's a win win

Blue Rays are only 1080p. 4K is close to 4000. Streaming a picture just as good as Blue Ray. DVDs more titles and more available.

@@megamikethemovieman not for awhile. Streaming has to add 3/4 more of data space. I think we’re years away from that. Plus companies would charge an arm and a leg for that service. 4K on Netflix is already 20 bucks. You would have to to charge 80 to 100 bucks for each streaming service.

I think blu-ray will overtake dvd's. I think the people who are buying dvd's are old, young people who buy physical media buy blu-ray's. As the older generation start dying off, the market for physical media targeted towards the casual consumer will die out with them and physical media will became a collectors/enthusiasts only market where blu-ray will dominate. Streaming will still be king but dvd will die out.

No.
1. The difference is far less noticeable compared to going from dvd to blu-ray and you really need top notch hardware to get the most out of it.
2. Right now you can't play 4K discs on PC, that is something that could change though, so maby in the far flung future when everyone can afford high quality 4K HDR displays/TV's and every PC can play any disk, but at that point streaming has probably cought up with disks anyway.

Bro the people who watch horror movies on streaming were never collectors they're average moviegoers who rarely bought any movie if any. A young woman I know that's a horror fan streams everything and owns nothing not even Blu-rays. I don't know what's your thing with HD it's like you're suffering because Blu-rays are not selling more lol!🤣 They stopped manufacturing VHS because it wasn't a disc and analog signal. A big part of DVDs takeover was the PS2 not only you got a gaming console but a DVD player as well and it's the most sold console in history. What about the PS3 being a Blu-ray player and PS4 being a 4K player, why didn’t those consoles help their formats take off more? And the person that stream everything, what did they use to do when streaming didn’t exist?
@@megamikethemovieman the PS3 didn't sell as well as the PS2. Don't get me wrong it sold well but not as good. I remember at the beginning of Blu-rays stores didn't have as many horror titles for sale. I bought a Sony Blu-ray player I think in 2011 and only a handful of movies because more were not available whereas DVD had a ton. The young woman I know watched cable tv in her home with her parents and they had a small VHS and DVD collection. But she's not interested on buying anything even though she knows when you stream you don't own anything.🤔

PS5 supports 4K movies on discs, but it's kinda too little too late, even on games, digital dominates with a sales market ratio of 70% digital/30% physical on PlayStation (this was uploaded today on the latest financial report from sony)
videogame analysts say that xbox is even worse with a sales ratio of around 90% digital and 10% physical, but we don't have official numbers from xbox

DVDS dominate because their the cheapest. They almost always have more dvds than Blu-ray and 4k in stores. Because they know dvds will sell more. I prefer bluray over dvd if the price is right. But they usually have some bluray a little bit of 4k and a lot of dvds in stores. Yeah, I'm surprised that they haven't stopped making dvds. I'm glad that they haven't, but I'm surprised. Long live physical media streaming won't last. Physical media was here first, and it's not going anywhere.

blu rays just fucking suck, i use my pc to watch movies and not a dedicated player so keep that in mind, with a dvd I can buy a 20 dollars external usb dvd player and just use it no issues, blu rays for an external usb player is usually around 100 dollars unless you get lucky and find a used one and then you need to deal with the pain in the ass that is the set up process just to do what a dvd does when you plug it in, im using a linux computer so figuring out how to do this simple thing was annoying and once i did figure it out i dont even get the proper experience because blu ray menus dont work on linux a lot of the time unlike dvd
dvd had the benefit of being easy to crack so it had much better comparability, if they just let people do what they want with blu rays people will buy more blu rays otherwise there wouldn't be a reason to buy dvds anymore outside of price

Watching on PC is also the way i watch movies outside of theaters so having to watch a way I don't want to because they don't make a good enough product to meet my wants makes me think that piracy is the best option at that point
Yes streaming did hurt the bluray format. Before Bluray could win the format war between DVDs & Blurays. And between streaming & the studios & small labels. Not backing the bluray format 100 % percent like they did with the DvD format. All I am saying is if the studios & small labels would have at least backed the bluray format at least 80% percent. Instead of the 45 to 55% percent that the studios & small labels are doing now. Bc bluray would have taken over the format by now. I am not saying DVDs would have been gone by now. But bluray would have been the Custer mere pick over DVDs by now. And also what hurt the bluray format too. Is that there is still not enough catalog titles available on the bluray format still after 15 year on the market.

@@megamikethemovieman the reason why what I read is back in 2009. I read an article that all the studios did not have the patience for the lower sales in the bluray market. Bc unlike DVD 📀 format that just took over physical media market & blow up in only 3 to 4 years after being launched. Bc bluray format was a slower to get people on board to buy the bluray format

Does that also play into why they won’t even wait that long before they release something to streaming and physical? Streaming is much easier and less painful than picking a disc to watch in a family environment, especially when your spouse has different tastes.
Before streaming, Blu Ray became the preferred choice for enthusiasts, while dvds were relegated to low income families often in the jammy hands of toddlers. Dvds sell to a different market.
I might purchase a 4K player if one of my Bluray players dies, but there's little incentive with streaming and UA-cam available for old shows and movies, and from what I've been reading there's a fall in the quality due to the process used.
But do you feel we’re missing something either having the family gathered around one movie to share that communal experience? Everyone is just watching their own thing on their phone now.
@megamikethemovieman well it's just me and my wife. As someone who recently reached retirement age and has opted for phased retirement, we can have quality time at the cinema when it's quiet.
At home, we tend to binge watch kdramas or the latest hot thing on Netflix or Amazon, and there's enough there to keep us happy. The blurays tend to stay on the shelf, and most of those titles are on Disney, plus anyway. The only bluray that we've played recently was Elf when Amazon wanted to charge for it at Xmas.
It's not easy finding something we both like and have to compromise, but talking the guys at work, i found out that we all have a backlog of things that the wife got bored with.

The hit of the year so far was Godzilla minus one. It was so good h didn't bother with the Lionsgate version. My wife loves Tom Hardy and Jason Mamoa, so they're easy picks, but she wouldn't watch Dune2. We did see the last three DC movies, and we've just watched Planet of the Apes. It's doing a good job in carrying the story forward.
I'm enough of a geek to know the background to most upcoming movies and rely on weekend reviews. I've got Deadpool, Minions, and War of the Rohirrin to look forward to, and that last one is a definite buy.
