LOVE y’all’s list. Many great recs here and the hot dog bit has finally convinced me to watch may December. However you did commit the great sin of not mentioning MY favorite movie: bottoms
Some other movies in my top 10 that weren’t mentioned: They Cloned Tyrone - Sci Fi Comedy Mystery Blaxploitation film (I know that’s a lot) starring John Boyega, Teyonah Paris and Jamie Foxx where they find out about a government cloning conspiracy with Kiefer Sutherland as the main villain - a lot of humor, costume design is fantastic, its great. The Holdovers - comforting 70s Christmas time dramedy with Paul Giamatti at his absolute best. I’d be shocked if Avaryl and Andrew didn’t like it Scrapper - basically an A24 film that isn’t an A24 film, has the same feel of The Florida Project where an absentee father (played by Harris Dickinson) comes back to take care of his daughter that recently lost her mom and it’s great and sad and comforting all at the same time Talk To Me - horror film (through line with the ‘made by UA-camrs but actually great’ convo from this vid) about a hand statue that can basically possess you and how peer pressure effects the younger generation etc, it’s amazing and has great performances John Wick 4 - I’m not sure if they like action films but there are some batshit insane scenes that I know for a fact that will make them laugh like Keanu Reeves constantly getting run over by cars in a roundabout or when he falls down like 1,000 flights of stairs
avaryl, have you seen Los Angeles Plays Itself Yet? it's a fantastic (and long) film essay about the depiction of city Los Angeles in movies, and the use of the geography of Los angeles as locations for movies (though often not accurately depicted) and there is a long section about the use of the ennis house as a location in various movies and a couple of times it definitely reminded me of your rant in your Until We Meet Again review about the driving route she takes
I always love hearing your opinions on films even when I really disagree. A few I was interested in hearing your reactions about: M3Gan, Thanksgiving, The Zone of Interest, Talk To Me. Also in a far less positive light, Eo, SIlent Night, Godland. Last year I saw the most movies in the cinema than I ever have, and yet still every time I saw something that Avaryl hasn't I feel surprised. Entertaining as always, and I now have another dozen movies on my list.
Thanks for the thoughtful discussion at the end about how if we CAN'T talk about something, that is a problem! Life is full of nuance - we have to make mistakes and be forgiven if we expect to learn and grow.
Aww, I'm glad you both like Quiz Lazy. It was such a feel good movie that I quite enjoyed as well. Love Sandra Oh. I'll follow her into any movie, good or bad, to be honest.
My top movies of the year were: 1) TMNT: Mutant Mayhem (genuinely a fun time at the theater! Also nostalgic bias bc I saw it with my brother and we grew up watching TMNT 🥰) 2) Puss in Boots Last Wish (2022) Funny and well written. Dreamworks has been killing it! 3) Guardians of the Galaxy 3…just LEAPS & BOUNDS more impactful and intriguing than other recent Marvel movies 4) Matilda the Musical (2022) such a great stage to screen adaptation! I cry every time I watch “When I Grow Up” 5) Across the Spider Verse Beautifully animated. It’s low bc I’m just mad that I have to wait for part 2 😂
May December was also one my favorites to, if not my favorite. Honestly totally agree about it being the in the realm of Tar. Both fabulous movies that manage to broach taboos in interesting ways.
i never do a worst of but i have no problem going "yes i agree with you" or "oooh girl, you actually liked that?". as for turning things off: i just fast forward to the end so basically watch it in silence just so i can satisfy my curiosity and know how it ends.
OMG I just saw the trailer for Dogman that came out last year 2023 and I am obsessed with it. I need to watch it now and I’m wondering if you two have seen it already because it looks so good… The trailer looks so fucked an entertaining
Tops films of the year. Top 5 of 2023 (from the UK) Puss in Boots The Last Wish Marcel The Shell with Shoes On Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem Dungeons and Dragons honour Among Thieves The Portal Door Top 5 “watched in 2023” Dark City (1998) Swiss Army Man (2016) The First Wives Club (1996) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1982) the filmed version with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury. Batman : Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
a wonderful showing of movies this year, and Andrew is so right about the widening divide between "art" and movies like Super Mario, it's truly concerning. But hey, at least for now, the art is still around
❤ your discussions! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I saw that Avaryl did something a little different with her look today! Both makeup and hair. A different kind of beautiful in this one. The eyes popped and I love the hair.
NEWS ALERT: The director of Shadow in the Cloud, Roseanne Liang, is in pre-production for her new movie, Maude vs Maude, starring Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry!
Avaryls face when Andrew said he was quitting Kenneth Branagh 😂 We all know Avaryl can't get enough of him, even if he makes aweful movies and poor choices in roles.
I only watched 3 movies that actually came out in 2023 last year: The Mario movie, The Onyx movie and The Boy and the Heron. Avaryl likes weird movies, I would recommend The Boy and the Heron. It was surreal mix of Alice in Wonderland, Return to Oz and.. Thumbelina? But in a much more mature package. I don’t know how much Ghibli you know but this was the weirdest one. Haha
Re; Cobweb, speaking of things that take a hard right turn, we were enjoying Lessons in Chemistry until I think the 3rd episode... And out of nowhere, with no hint that it would be coming, it turns into a talking dog show.
The scene in Haunting of Venice that made me want to turn it off was the uncomfortably up-close underwater take of Kenneth Branagh bobbing for apples 👅
You guys definitely liked SHOTGUN WEDDING better than I did. Of over 300 movies I saw from last year that was easily the worst for me. I could not even finish it. Also I apparently hated 24 movies more than I hated COCAINE BEAR: 24. Sanctuary 23. Fast X 22. Haunted Mansion 21. Scream VI 20. Five Nights at Freddy's 19. How to Blow Up a Pipeline 18. Renfield 17. Book Club 2 16. Operation Fortune 15. 80 for Brady 14. 65 13. Champions 12. Transformers whatever 11. Sharper 10. The Tutor 9. Knock at the Cabin 8. Cat Person 7. Rebel Moon 6. Artifice Girl 5. You People 4. Flamin' Hot 3. Chevalier 2. Magic Mike XXL 1. Shotgun Wedding
I think the "weird for weird sake" about Poor Things, to me, only applies to Mark Ruffalo's performance. Every other actor commits to the surreal, whimsical feel of the film whereas Mark Ruffalo feels like he's doing everything with a wink to the camera. Like he's in the SNL skit version of the movie rather than part of the movie itself. Supporting Actor at the Oscars was such a disappointment this year. Charles Melton, Willem Dafoe and the kid from Anatomy of a Fall all should've been in over Ruffalo, Gosling and De Niro imo.
I love you two! I want to recommend some anime for you two as I do know campy ones you two would enjoy. Shin Cutey Honey (1994) This one is CAMP, it's about a half-naked robot woman fighting against naked monster people, the dialogue is camp and the story is nonsensical and horny, it has many transformations and nip slips. It is basically a porn without the porn part, this anime is like if John Waters made a superhero/magical girl anime. Angel Cop (1989) Angel Cop is unintentional camp, it's an action anime from the 80s with a lot of gore and violence but some of the most ridiculous voice acting and dialogue, it's about a special police/military task force that fights against terrorism, there are also psychics involved with a very queer female antagonist, if you like terrible 80s action films you will love this. There is also a 2004 adaptation of Cutie Honey that is live-action and that movie is also camp and fabulous, it is peak 2000s Japan.
Me and my wife rage quit The Killer too! Omg it's so bad. Self described "sigmas" will beat off to that movie for the next 20 years. Cast a Deadly Spell and Nightbreed are some of my favs. Totally shocked you just saw them this year. Glad you enjoyed them.
sorry to bust your bubble andrew but migration actually did very well. its still in the top ten even though its been streaming for several weeks if not a month by now. AND on a 70mil budget it made almost 300mil as well top the charts on several streaming/vod sites. it was no mario (a billion at the box office) but still a success.

im very surpised bottoms wasn't talked about at all?? did i miss them talking about not liking it or something? it seems like it would have been right up their alley?!
‘A Haunting In Venice’ was so bad I turned it off 30 minutes in, I fear that Keneth will take my favourite Poirot movie ‘Evil Under The Sun’ and rub his muted coloured misery schlock all over it next.
my top ten of the year with a few honorables: 1. They Cloned Tyrone 2. The Archies 3. The Holdovers 4. Leo 5. Barbie 6. Praise This 7. The Burial 8. world's Best 9. Super Mario Bros. 10. The Flash honorables: jazzman's blues, theatre camp, dicks: the musical, saltburn, quiz lady, the crime is mine (french whodunnit that you might like averyl. has a very famous actress you would know in a surprise guest role) anyone but you (which will be on my 2024 list since i just watched it but it came out at the end of december)
I understand Andrew hating the Mario movie because it has almost literally no plot and it's just a bunch of game references, but it's not like Mario has a plot to begin with and it honestly was less of a kid's movie and more of a 80s love letter, the soundtrack literally contains I Need a Hero and Take on Me, its for 30-40 year olds who grew up with Mario and just want fan service and they got that, but I see how boring it is for a general audience.
Loved Quiz Lady... And Andrew I didn't hate Mario Bros. I just fell asleep while watching it. So I can't say I hated it but have not been interested in rewatching it.
Love this kind of recaps! You guys are the best! My favourite movie this year was Love and Revolution directed by Alejandro Marin about the first gay pride parade organized in Spain with an all queer cast and crew! The distribution was kind of local so not a lot people know about it but I really really recomend it to everyone ❤
Thank you for summarizing my feelings on cancel culture towards the end talking about May December. I have been championing that movie since it has come out (people said it was boring - HOW?!) and am so sad it was snubbed at the Academy Awards - especially Charles Melton!
Honestly I just came here to be outraged if they hated any of the movies I loved but the closest thing is Barbie and I'm not really that obsessed with Barbie. I guess the opposite is true though where they really liked a lot of movies that I don't care for which somehow isn't as fun. Glad to see Anatomy of a Fall and outraged not to see All of Us Strangers.
I’m so sad you two didn’t enjoy Cocaine Bear like I did. Is it a good movie? NO. Did I have an absolute blast? HARD YES. Might have had something to do with me seeing it in a theatre full of Romanian teens who were loudly reactive but I thought the tone was spot on and it was hilarious and entertaining. The bear railed a line off of a dismembered leg!! What’s not to love!!
humble brag...I may have worked on the kings daughter - it was made in melbourne...and I'm sorry
LOVE y’all’s list. Many great recs here and the hot dog bit has finally convinced me to watch may December. However you did commit the great sin of not mentioning MY favorite movie: bottoms
I NEED an "anatomy of a fall" review, divas.
Speaking of Wes Anderson doing Wonka, he did a bunch of short film Roald Dhal adaptations this year
Anatomy of A Fall was by far my favorite movie of the year and was so happy it got it’s flowers in screenplay
Some other movies in my top 10 that weren’t mentioned:
They Cloned Tyrone - Sci Fi Comedy Mystery Blaxploitation film (I know that’s a lot) starring John Boyega, Teyonah Paris and Jamie Foxx where they find out about a government cloning conspiracy with Kiefer Sutherland as the main villain - a lot of humor, costume design is fantastic, its great.
The Holdovers - comforting 70s Christmas time dramedy with Paul Giamatti at his absolute best. I’d be shocked if Avaryl and Andrew didn’t like it
Scrapper - basically an A24 film that isn’t an A24 film, has the same feel of The Florida Project where an absentee father (played by Harris Dickinson) comes back to take care of his daughter that recently lost her mom and it’s great and sad and comforting all at the same time
Talk To Me - horror film (through line with the ‘made by UA-camrs but actually great’ convo from this vid) about a hand statue that can basically possess you and how peer pressure effects the younger generation etc, it’s amazing and has great performances
John Wick 4 - I’m not sure if they like action films but there are some batshit insane scenes that I know for a fact that will make them laugh like Keanu Reeves constantly getting run over by cars in a roundabout or when he falls down like 1,000 flights of stairs
i was sort of hoping either Andrew or Avaryl would have mentioned the Holdovers it was so good!
Apart from Talk to me I need to watch all of these
An Hour plus video, oh my! 🤗Thank you for all the content y’all!
I relate so much to Movies I Turned Off as someone who's seen a lot of films and just entering their 40s
praying for a full poor things review!!!
When I worked at a video store in the 80s, we had a FrankenHooker VHS whose cover had a button that, when you pressed it, said, "WANNA DATE?!?!"
You introduced me to Fred Ward in your Tremors review, and now you've given me Cast a Deadly Spell. IT'S SO GOOD THANK YOU SO MUCH!
we need a "Madame Web" video, it feels perfect for you guys😭
i could watch avaryl talk about movies FOREVER.
I loved Bottoms. It was so weird, and unexpected. Check it out! Cheers!
avaryl's persistent hatred for the barbie movie fills me with glee
I dislike that movie too, while people: ''This is the best movie of all time!''
Her hatred of "La La Land" is also impressive and enjoyable.
As every1 should
@@lifegood1712 haha almost fell asleep, during La La land, I don't know why I watched it all along
Avaryl is consistent in her correctness.
Omg
It’s been so long since I watched an episode ! Your hair is so freaking cute ❤❤❤
avaryl, have you seen Los Angeles Plays Itself Yet? it's a fantastic (and long) film essay about the depiction of city Los Angeles in movies, and the use of the geography of Los angeles as locations for movies (though often not accurately depicted)
and there is a long section about the use of the ennis house as a location in various movies
and a couple of times it definitely reminded me of your rant in your Until We Meet Again review about the driving route she takes
Yes! My professor in collage actually made that!! It’s so good.
Avaryl hated barbie - pretends to be shocked - joke aside... I agree 100%. Great gowns
Not Nintendo just announcing a sequel for the Super Mario Bros Movie for 2026! 😭
what movie is the "i award you no points" clip from pls?
Billy Madison, it’s an Adam Sandler movie
25:00 poor things is a crazy movie. Not for everyone, but thats the whole point. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ For me
I always love hearing your opinions on films even when I really disagree. A few I was interested in hearing your reactions about: M3Gan, Thanksgiving, The Zone of Interest, Talk To Me. Entertaining as always, and I now have another dozen movies on my list.
Love the hair!!
Just spent five minutes trying to figure out how to phonetically type out Hüller for Avaryl but I don't think it's doable
Thanks for the thoughtful discussion at the end about how if we CAN'T talk about something, that is a problem! Life is full of nuance - we have to make mistakes and be forgiven if we expect to learn and grow.
This is a great video idea! Have you done one for past years too?
Nvm you guys answered my question almost immediatly
Aww, I'm glad you both like Quiz Lazy. It was such a feel good movie that I quite enjoyed as well. Love Sandra Oh. I'll follow her into any movie, good or bad, to be honest.
I like sandra but not that other girl
8:00 this scene is CRAZY. Whats the movie?
It’s from Billy Madison!
I hope there's going to be a review of "All of us strangers" :)
My top movies of the year were:
1) TMNT: Mutant Mayhem (genuinely a fun time at the theater! Also nostalgic bias bc I saw it with my brother and we grew up watching TMNT 🥰)
2) Puss in Boots Last Wish (2022)
Funny and well written. Dreamworks has been killing it!
3) Guardians of the Galaxy 3…just LEAPS & BOUNDS more impactful and intriguing than other recent Marvel movies
4) Matilda the Musical (2022)
such a great stage to screen adaptation! I cry every time I watch “When I Grow Up”
5) Across the Spider Verse
Beautifully animated. It’s low bc I’m just mad that I have to wait for part 2 😂
May December was also one my favorites to, if not my favorite. Honestly totally agree about it being the in the realm of Tar. Both fabulous movies that manage to broach taboos in interesting ways.
I dont think we have enough categories
31:30 lmao whats this movie?
I need to know what you both think of Arthurs Whisky.
I turned off/walked out of the following: The Little Mermaid, It Lives Inside, Knock at the Cabin, and No Hard Feelings.... No regrets!
i never do a worst of but i have no problem going "yes i agree with you" or "oooh girl, you actually liked that?". as for turning things off: i just fast forward to the end so basically watch it in silence just so i can satisfy my curiosity and know how it ends.

Tops films of the year.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem
Dungeons and Dragons honour Among Thieves
The Portal Door
Top 5 “watched in 2023”

Amen to the popes exorcist!!! May we pray for eventually a whole Halloween series but just of popes exorcist movies and their sequels and spin offs!
We knew Barbie on Avryl’s worst list was coming :p great video!
Omg it’s here!! Thank you !
your edits are the best😂
Did you end up getting to the part where the sloth drives a car in Slotherhouse? Peak cinema right there
You didn’t mention theatre camp
a wonderful showing of movies this year, and Andrew is so right about the widening divide between "art" and movies like Super Mario, it's truly concerning. But hey, at least for now, the art is still around
Beautiful Disaster ABSOLUTELY DESERVED ITS OWN REVIEW AND GODDAMN BEAUTIFUL WEDDING BETTER GET IT
Loving your reviews as always. I know you liked part one. Will you watch and maybe review Dune Part Two? 🤗
My short review is up on Letterboxd!
Did you all watch No Hard Feelings with Jennifer Lawrence also a great comedy entry from last year
Avaryls face when Andrew said he was quitting Kenneth Branagh 😂 We all know Avaryl can't get enough of him, even if he makes aweful movies and poor choices in roles.
2:12 I think I also might have to swear off biopics…they just keep disappointing me..
I turned off many of the same here. Not even by choice! It just happened that I missed them because they were so under my radar. Really weird year!
I watched Skakes the Clown too! (think you'd referenced it somewhere before) and also really enjoyed how weird it was
I only watched 3 movies that actually came out in 2023 last year: The Mario movie, The Onyx movie and The Boy and the Heron.
Avaryl likes weird movies, I would recommend The Boy and the Heron. It was surreal mix of Alice in Wonderland, Return to Oz and.. Thumbelina? But in a much more mature package. I don’t know how much Ghibli you know but this was the weirdest one. Haha
wait virginia garderner from FALL is in beautiful disaster???
Ok I don’t know if Avaryl did something different with her hair or her makeup, but she looks BEAUTIFUL in this video
Also I apparently hated 24 movies more than I hated COCAINE BEAR:
24. Sanctuary
23. Fast X
22. Haunted Mansion
21. Scream VI
20. Five Nights at Freddy's
19. How to Blow Up a Pipeline
18. Renfield
17. Book Club 2
16. Operation Fortune
15. 80 for Brady
14. 65
13. Champions
12. Transformers whatever
11. Sharper
10. The Tutor
9. Knock at the Cabin
8. Cat Person
7. Rebel Moon
6. Artifice Girl
5. You People
4. Flamin' Hot
3. Chevalier
2. Magic Mike XXL
1. Shotgun Wedding
For me Cocaine Bear was definitely the worst.
Did you see The boy and the heron?
12:26: "It's Not That Hard" would be a great title for a somewhat raunchy Rom-Com.
Avaryl really speaking to me with “and it was directed by a woman ✨”. It’s just nice to see there be so many options!
You two took out the trash on this one, enjoined it.
I love you two!
I want to recommend some anime for you two as I do know campy ones you two would enjoy.
Shin Cutey Honey (1994)
This one is CAMP, it's about a half-naked robot woman fighting against naked monster people, the dialogue is camp and the story is nonsensical and horny, it has many transformations and nip slips. It is basically a porn without the porn part, this anime is like if John Waters made a superhero/magical girl anime.
Angel Cop (1989)
Angel Cop is unintentional camp, it's an action anime from the 80s with a lot of gore and violence but some of the most ridiculous voice acting and dialogue, it's about a special police/military task force that fights against terrorism, there are also psychics involved with a very queer female antagonist, if you like terrible 80s action films you will love this.
There is also a 2004 adaptation of Cutie Honey that is live-action and that movie is also camp and fabulous, it is peak 2000s Japan.
The musical sting when Julianne Moore opens that refregirator makes me laugh until I'm wheezing EVERY GODDAMN TIME
Me and my wife rage quit The Killer too! Omg it's so bad. Self described "sigmas" will beat off to that movie for the next 20 years.
Cast a Deadly Spell and Nightbreed are some of my favs. Totally shocked you just saw them this year. Glad you enjoyed them.
I exactly feel the same way as Andrew with May December. After I finished it I didn't like it, but after a while I said: ''wait this is actually good"
I am 11 minutes into this mega review!
This might be my favourite video you’ve both done *ever*
I turned off a lot of movies as well. Hopefully there’s more hits than misses this year ❤ Cheerth! 🎉
I love this!
sorry to bust your bubble andrew but migration actually did very well. its still in the top ten even though its been streaming for several weeks if not a month by now. AND on a 70mil budget it made almost 300mil as well top the charts on several streaming/vod sites. it was no mario (a billion at the box office) but still a success.
not me clicking like a rabbid dog because i just read bottoms and thought it was a review of the Rachel seanott, Ayo edebiri movie Bottoms (2023)
still hoping for a bottoms mention in there lets see
My top movies of the year were Bottoms, Saltburn, May December and The Color Purple
You guys should watch Polite Society and Eileen if you haven’t already!
Eileen is terrible...it's so bad, I can't even describe it. They have a review about Polite society
im very surpised bottoms wasn't talked about at all?? did i miss them talking about not liking it or something? it seems like it would have been right up their alley?!
‘A Haunting In Venice’ was so bad I turned it off 30 minutes in, I fear that Keneth will take my favourite Poirot movie ‘Evil Under The Sun’ and rub his muted coloured misery schlock all over it next.
It would be a disaster, I hope after this one no one give him funding to make a Poirot movie.
Interesting that I love Avaryl and Andrew and yet our movie takes/preferences are VERY opposite
I confess I enjoyed the hell out of "Cocaine Bear." I think I was in the right frame of mind and had a beer beforehand.
the "also, also" killed me, so avaryl
my top ten of the year with a few honorables:
1. They Cloned Tyrone
2. The Archies
3. The Holdovers
4. Leo
5. Barbie
6. Praise This
7. The Burial
8. world's Best
9. Super Mario Bros.
10. The Flash
honorables: jazzman's blues, theatre camp, dicks: the musical, saltburn, quiz lady, the crime is mine (french whodunnit that you might like averyl. has a very famous actress you would know in a surprise guest role) anyone but you (which will be on my 2024 list since i just watched it but it came out at the end of december)
I turned off Asteroid City, couldn’t do it.
should have walked out of rogue one, marvel movies and lalaland but i just slept instead
'God's Own Country' is a gay romance. It's rural, beautiful landscape and positiv
It’s funny cous Hero wasn’t originally meant to be in the movie at all
And yet they felt like squeezing that extra piece of 80s fanservice in lol
Hearing Avaryl say "Awkwafina is a good actress" made me question her taste like Nina Garcia lolol
Loved Quiz Lady... And Andrew I didn't hate Mario Bros. I just fell asleep while watching it. So I can't say I hated it but have not been interested in rewatching it.
Let's go and enjoy the Theahtrahr!
I love Argyle and operation fortune. Wonka was good I never really like Timothy C but he was great in it.
I found out about Nathan Lane as a character actor in The Good Wife and he literally broke the screen 😂
I gave Haunted Mansion a solid B. It’s Better than the Eddie Murphy version.
Aww, I thought Cocaine Bear was stupid fun.
1st woohoo - Hey Guys.....wow - you two still have the same glasses / I have not been to a movie but heard of many - Godzilla looks cool ....
please review mea culpa, the new tyler perry movie with kelly rowland, you will laugh.
Thank you for summarizing my feelings on cancel culture towards the end talking about May December. I have been championing that movie since it has come out (people said it was boring - HOW?!) and am so sad it was snubbed at the Academy Awards - especially Charles Melton!

Glad to see Anatomy of a Fall and outraged not to see All of Us Strangers.
NIGHTBREED!!!!! YASSS MAMA
