    • @brandonb.5304
      @brandonb.5304 5 років тому +9

      life sucks it usually only jerks you forward when you don’t know how much gas to give it. My first Subaru CVT was like that, but after a few days I learned how much to give it and now it’s smooth as butter. The CVT transmission also learns your tendencies and adjusts over time. So Scotty, never having driven the car before, experiencing a jerky CVT transmission is completely normal since he didn’t know how much gas to give it and the car not knowing his driving tendencies. Means absolutely nothing about the transmission’s quality or reliability.

But that being said, I would happily drive a manual subaru, manual honda's not so much, have had issues with their clutches. The only car I would never try again are Mitsubishi's (unless I'm on a serious budget) their v6 engine was just burning too much oil, even when I tried to trade it in, most dealers didn't want it, they claimed there only two kinds of mitsubishis , one that smoked and one that's about to smoke.

    Love the show Scotty but I'll have to disagree with you on this one. Coming from a Subaru mechanic we have way more issues from people blowing second gear out of the manual transmissions then we ever have with the cvts… In fact that's what I put my wife in and we've had hers for 6 years now with no issues. Where people run into issues is if they don't service them (just drain and fill is fine) or if there's a leak and it doesn't get addressed. Honda automatic transmissions are getting a bad reputation for a reason now and I love Hondas

    I always find it funny when scotty points out bad aspects(i.e. Subaru auto/CVT trans) people always comment along the lines of my friend's sister's cousin's ex boyfriend had one with 300k miles and no issues! Or how people bash a Toyota they had that had issues. This advice he gives is a general rule of thumb, and there are exceptions to that rule. What he is saying is that you have a higher chance of having an issue with the Subaru trans than with a Toyota trans.

      @@rickrobinson3171 Agree. Most American cars are junk sadly. But, I can pretty much guarantee that there are a few GMs(i.e. a chevy truck at my work with 300k) and Chryslers(🤮) that have alot of miles on them. BUT, that is a very rare exception to that. Just like Subarus and there notorious head gasket problem. Does every Subaru blow there head gaskets at 100k? No, but a higher than normal amount do compared to other brands, thus Subaru gets labeled as blowing head gaskets often. My grandmother had a 2000 Subaru forester that had over 200k before that happened, an exception to the reputation of them blowing head gaskets. Like that old saying goes, the only guarantees in life are death and taxes. Just like somewhere out there, there is a Chrysler with 300k on the original engine/trans.

    He's not fully wrong, recommending Toyota is Scotty's go-to because he's a cheap dude and he's not into the bells and whistles in cars these days. He understands that most of his audience are younger adults or teenagers and shouldn't be wasting their limited money on cars because they're the second most expensive thing you can buy in life that's a "need", second to buying a house. Nissan is my favorite brand of vehicles. They look awesome and the middle tier and up ones drive great, too. But scotty's not wrong in stating that their quality went down with Renault. He's not wrong in saying that CVTs aren't the best transmissions. They simply aren't strong transmissions and that's why Nissan gets a lot of flack for putting one in the Maxima for example, the "4 door sports car." I've only owned Nissans since I've been old enough to drive and I wish I could say I've never had problems with them but they are problems that I, a grown adult with good income, can pay for if I want to. And I will continue to buy Nissan just like people continue to buy BMW despite their reputation. It's all preference when you're older, but for scotty's audience I have no problem with what information he passes on. He's a careful dude who knows what he's talking about. Don't take that credit away from 'em just because you've been lucky with your Nissan if you've got one.

      Personally I don't care for his claim of Toyota being the best out there, while i get we all can't own luxury cars i have found in my life people with more issues owning used and even new toyotas than any other car. Now sure I'm dyed in the wool GM or nothing with family having worked for them and both parents owning Chevy same as their parents, but still I have found a better reliability from chevy vehicles no matter the age pound for pound compared to all other brands, yes they are not 1000 dollar cars and trucks, but why buy a car you're going to scrap in a few years. 2700 for a 2007 4x4 chevy trailblazer brand new interior, just needed speakers. Sure it was more than I wanted to pay but as a first car I can own it without being embarrassed or disgusted until basically I want to ditch it. You cant argue with that. And on a side note, armchair mechanics my father is a mechanic, he has been his whole life of 50 years and he's worked on it all from aircraft to automotive to even aquatic, I'm perfectly happy with the car I have and do not need to be lectured about GM's safety issues, etc. But in the end my point is this, he only reccomends Toyota and seems to love the vehicles to death, that's fine but with this type of material wouldnt a more impartial stance work better rather than just saying Toyota is best? Sure they may be reliable but what's their life span, when do they need to be replaced, what if I want a US made car (toyotas are not US made they're built here the parts are from China and japan), what's the fix for these issues? I guess I'd just like to see a little more diversity in his "best car brand" suggestions

    Hi Scotty I need a 3 row SUV reliable and good gas mileage. Which one should I get? My wife is a big fan of Subaru and we are considering the Subaru Ascent Touring 2019. We love Panasonic sun roof for the trips we go out to and all the new safety features like lane keep assist, rare traffic alert, etc. We drove the 2018 Toyota Highlander and I feel it has a lot of body roll. Which one would you get if you drive a lot, go out to trips, off-road occasionally and need good space at the 3rd row. We considered minivan and loved the Chrysler Pacifica plug in hybrid but it does not have good ground clearance or reliability of the Subaru. I watch so many of your videos and have learned a lot from you. Hope you will answer my question.

    Okay the main problem with Subaru isn't the transmissions. They will cost a fortune to repair yes, but for reliability they are great as long as they are maintained. Transmission oil needs changed at least every 50K miles as with any automatic transmission. Subaru makes it nice and easy to change it also. They incorporated the use of an external transmission oil filter, the same as an engine oil filter on almost every car. They also have a transmission drain plug. There aren't any reasons to make excuses on why anyone doesn't change the transmission oil. I have 24 years experience as an auto mechanic and have seen a lot of problems with transmissions failing because of poor maintenance. If you keep the tires at close to even tread you will be okay. Oh and CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE! It is probably the most important maintenance on any vehicle not only for safety but for the differentials on all wheel drive vehicles. The main problem with Subaru is the head gaskets on the 4 cylinder engines. I recommend if any one were to buy a Subaru to buy the 6 cylinder engines. The 6 cylinder engines are really great engines. There aren't any worries with timing belts because it utilizes a chain. There are a few issues of timing belt tensioners going bad however CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL every 3000 miles for conventional oil or 6000 miles on synthetic oil and you should be okay. Many manufacturers s are recommending higher intervals but if you want maximum protection stick with 3k conventional and 6k synthetic and a good filter. Yes indeed there is a good bit of proper maintenance involved in a Subaru or any all wheel drive vehicle but that is the price if anyone wants a good running vehicle that will go anywhere on any road (even off-road) at any time.

      Never believe the "never change" BS. I had my CVT fluid changed at 120k after several arguments with a dealership. I called Subaru and they confirmed it needs to be regularly checked and changed at set millage. after giving up on getting serviced at subaru I went to a local shop that did it and the fluid that came out was black as night and smelled like death. from now on I'm sticking to the 60k change times. the oil will last the life of the tranny, because it will kill it.

  • @PepsiGal16
    @PepsiGal16 6 років тому +6

    The main problem with Subarus isn't the transmission, as a lot of others have pointed out. Its that the head gaskets go out and depending on the year- you also have to worry about a timing belt. It is interesting because in 2011 I believe they replaced all Subaru Forester timing belts with a timing chain, but because of this they also changed the oil weight requirements- which is why models 2011 and up have issues with consuming high amounts of that thin oil. My Subaru has 160,000 miles on it and my head gaskets, and timing belt and transmission never gave me issues. Yet I know someone who's impreza blew its gaskets at just 30,000. I think it depends on where the Subaru was manufactured and how well you care for it. They are pretty decent in the snow and have some of the best safety ratings. I just wish they got better gas mileage.

    CVT transmissions don't shift, yes you can shift into park, reverse or drive but the transmission doesn't "shift" some auto makers fudge things and make it seem like the transmission is shifting since most American consumers are so used to a automatic transmission going through the gears.
    But a CVT transmission does not do this it's like a motor scooter you twist the throttle and the vehicle accelerates to its maximum speed. But a CVT transmission does not shift.

    • @ulogy
      @ulogy 6 років тому +4
