  • Can TSS Turkey hunting ammo kill a turkey at 100 yards? Will tungsten have enough pattern density and ballistics gel penetration to be effective for turkey hunting at this extreme long range? What is the best long-range TSS turkey ammo? For this experiment, I pattern tested Federal Premium TSS, BOSS Tom TSS, HEVI Shot HEVI-18 TSS, APEX Turkey TSS, Remington Premier TSS, Fiocchi Golden Turkey TSS, and Herter's Turkey TSS. Each TSS tungsten shell was 3" with one exception at 2.75". They had very close to the same velocity of about 1200 fps, and each was #9 TSS. I also did a ballistics gel test to see if there is enough terminal performance to do the job.

    I did this test with an average turkey choke, specifically the Carlson's Turkey choke at 0.670 constriction. I used my Mossberg 940 Pro Turkey with a Holosun 507K Red Dot at a certified shooting range. My goal is to see if the average turkey hunter has any change at shooting a turkey at 100 yards with this ammo. #turkeyhunting

    A couple of observations:
    1) Last year we took a 2 year old Tom that hung up off the decoy at 72 yards on a range finder’s 1 3/4 No9s. It was very efficient.
    2) w 100 yard patterns w the odd 2-5 pellets in the vitals is not sufficient. The next shit is just as likely to put no pellets in the vitals load to load learn a random couple of pellets hitting vitals once.

    While in the 50 yard test you using the semi-standard .670 turkey choke makes a lot of sense. Shows what patterns that a typical lead turkey load shooter would get if all they did was change over to a box of TSS. BUT those long range craze fellas would most likely run more specialized choke tubes and likely would add quite a few hits if they matched loads and chokes.
    I still think roughly 80 yards is a reliable max for even some pretty crazy setups.

      My logic is people who are obsessed with patterns, chokes, and ammo combos to get the best possible range, are hopefully too well educated to take 100 yard shots because they know the power isn't there no matter what the pattern could be. It's the average person who is more likely to misjudge distance to try something crazy like this. But you do have a point. Its worth doing a test with the best possible patterning choke and ammo combo to see what is possible at crazy range. I just don't feel like spending the money to do it right now lol.

    So, I have been struggling with what is the best ammo for my mossberg model 835 ulti magnum 12ga. I have a jebs head hunter .665 choke on it. What TSS ammo would you recommend for the longest effective range. I'm thinking of landing on Boss Tom. If for no other reason than the pellet count, price, and the results of your testing.
    The ulti mag is a bit of a weird-o in the fact it has basically a 10ga barrel slammed down at the end. Supposed to help with recoil and wad deformation, I guess? This limits the choke restriction options.
    I hunt in very open country, so I am doing my homework on getting max, but realistic range out of the ammo. 60 to 65 yard shots are not un common. Anything past that is a let him walk. By the way, I enjoyed your 100yd TSS test. It's not a doable range for any pellet load. But it was interesting to see your results.
    Please advise.

      So the BOSS puts 2.5oz of TSS in the air, that is pretty much the most I've ever seen. The APEX is right behind it with 2.25oz. I don't think you could go wrong with either load using that choke. Any tighter might be problematic, but that constriction is about optimal. With a 60-yard goal, you'd be golden either way.

    If nothing else it keeps you fit- but broke. I hope that you have now shown that they have to be as close as possible to take home the bacon (turkey). Looking forward to your next expedition.

    I wonder what the trajectory is on those loads to 100 yards. I'm guessing several feet of drop and terminal velocity of 300 fps?

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  6 місяців тому +1

      Honestly, looks like about 2 foot drop. You are probably about right on the velocity.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  6 місяців тому

      Somewhere between 9 and 7. Likely to have about 15-20% more penetration and the same less pattern. Not enough to make this shot viable.

    Great, honest, video! These idiots who are shooting at turkeys at 100 yds. #1 don't even know what 100 yds is---- most likely. These are the same buffoons who are shooting at elk/ deer at 1000 yds. My own testing with TSS #9's out of a 10" .410 barreled Thompson Center handgun, proved really disappointing in penetration, out to 20-25 yds. Lead #7-1/2's did better. I have heard other people say, they sure don't drop dead like in the sponsored TV shows.

    Would a longer barrel make any difference ??

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  4 місяці тому

      Unlikely with these loads. You might gain a little at 30 or 32 inches. But modern loads, especially turkey, optimize their powder burn for normal to shorter barrells. More barrell does help more to a point. But not enough to get the penetration numbers to double here.

    The measure of a truly competent hunter is how close he or she can be to the quarry before taking the shot. This way the chances of wounding are minimized. This long range hunting fad is totally unethical. I think it stems from video game and/or movie trained "Fuds" who think they are hunters.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide

      Accurately judging distance is one of the most underdeveloped skills for hunters as well.
